I got the asus tuf motherboard with the 7800x3d 2 weeks ago I was clueless that the 9800x3d was gonna come out literally 1 week later cause I always use to get intel and never cared about amd CPU's so I'm basically exchanging the 7800x3d for the 9800x3d today already took the cpu out from the socket my issue is I've been seeing videos about how maybe I had to update the bios before I took it off do you think it was necessary since i literally updated 2 weeks ago
It's probably not necessary. The last version was from 11-1, & 9800x3d support was already there. I linked it below to check yours against. I typically recommend doing it if you're behind, though. Only takes a few minutes & most people forget to ever go back & check after building. www.asus.com/us/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-x870-plus-wifi/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=TUF-GAMING-X870-PLUS-WIFI
@KingLos88 no. You should be fine. It's still a good idea to update if a new bios has dropped. Linked to the latest below. www.asus.com/us/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-x870-plus-wifi/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=TUF-GAMING-X870-PLUS-WIFI
Regarding the Second M.2_2 slot "sharing lanes" with the PCI-E 5.0 GPU. Even it doing so has basically zero effect on any current or even next gen GPU for a while. See an RTX 4090 only "saturates" a PCI-E 3.0x16. So a PCI-E 5.0 x8 (half the lanes if M.2_2 slot being used) is still the same as a PCI-E 4.0 x 16. So there is a LOT of headroom there. Also, to fully saturate the PCI-E 5.0 x 4 for the M.2 slot it needs to have an NVME that runs above 16,000MB/s. Fastest right now is 14,000MB/s or so. And using those will just conk out from overheating anyway. So like you said. A PCI-E gen 5 SSD is not needed. Especially not for gaming if that is what most would do.
This is directly from ASUS Support page "** The PCIEX16(G5) shares bandwidth with M.2_2. The PCIEX16(G5) will run to x8 mode when M.2_2 runs." Link for reference www.asus.com/us/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-x870-plus-wifi/techspec/
I just ordered an asus X870E crosshair hero mb and 9800X3d. Will this mb work out the box with the cpu or does it need a bios update? Thanks for the information.
it's always a good idea to check & update. The unit you got may have been sitting on a shelf in inventory somewhere since before the 9800x3d launched. It's really easy to use Asus's bios flashback to update without the cpu installed
I came here to understand the PCIe lane sharing better. I did not want to cut bandwidth in half as I'm building the ultimate flight sim rig. 9800x3d, T-700 ssd and rtx4090. You confirmed what I wondered. What slot to populate with a 2nd m.2. Thank you! Video liked and subscribed.
Thanks for watching! That's an insane build you're putting together. I'm A little jealous 😒. Good luck with it! Make sure you check out some of the 9800x3d tuning vids out there. You can get some crazy good improvements over an already fantastic baseline with a little tuning. I'll have one as well, but not for a few weeks.
@FPP_Tech Well, it's been a work in progress for a while now. I've had the 4090 since mid last year. I started collecting parts towards the end of 2023 for an Arrowlake build. The day it dropped the embargo was lifted.... I filled out the return request for the cpu and mobo before delivery and ordered the TUF X870. I was at my PC at midnight the 7th to secure the 9800X3d but newegg stated release would be 6 am pst. Back at my pc at 8:45 am est and it WAS available. I'm not usually very lucky but the stars aligned and I have a tracking number for a Monday delivery for a completed new build just waiting for the cpu! Very excited! Dodged a bullet with that "Core Ultra 7 265k " lol.
You can populate all the M.2 slots. Both the PCI-E 5.0 ones and run the RTX 4090 with a breeze. The 4090 only saturates a PCI-E 3.0 slot anyway. And a PCI-E 5.0 x 8 (half the lanes of the 16X) is still the same as a PCI-E Gen 4.0 x 16 lanes. So as you can see, there is no bandwidth limitation whatsoever. And it won't be with 5000 series GPUs either. Also even if you populate the second 5.0 M2 slot, it won't use all the lanes unless you have an NVME that can do 16GB/S. So putting a Gen 4 NVME in there it's not going to use up the "bandwidth" anymore anyway.
I’m kicking around moving from my 5600x up to a 98003dx. Mostly I’m wondering how much this will help my FPS (running last year 3090 hybrid) vs my current set up. Good video answering some of the questions I have. Thank you.
Thanks for watching. You'd see a decent jump at 1080p & in games that aren't overly gpu intensive. At 1440p & 4k the gains over a 5600 would still be noticeable, albeit smaller since you're going to get gpu bound as well. Honestly, if you're JUST gaming & don't need the uplift n other areas, switching to a 5800x3d would probably get you 95% of the way there and save you tons of money.
If recommend making sure you have the most current BIOS release. The support page has all the details for cpu & memory support as well as bios version info. www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-x870-p/helpdesk_knowledge?model2Name=PRIME-X870-P
Great question. Amd mandated the inclusion of usb4 on the x870/x870e chipset. It uses an ASM4242 controller running directly to the cpu. Check out the article below. For a different board, but has the block diagram about half way down for a good visual reference. www.techpowerup.com/review/msi--mpg-x870e-carbon-wi-fi/4.html
That information was huge. I was trying to figure out which M.2 slot shares a lane. Almost skipped the first one becuase he said it gets hot. But he said put your boot drive their. I'll do that. Thanks @fpp_tech
My general rule is don't overspend on motherboard. For the most part, You aren't going to see a performance difference. The 9800x3d will run just as well on a B650e, x670, or x870 board. If you're using multiple m.2 drives, pay attention to lane sharing. That's about it. That said, usb4 on the new boards is also pretty nice to have. It comes down to budget priority. It's a great board, but if spending $310 on this means you have to cut back on your cpu, gpu, or storage, it isn't worth it. Just my humble & often wrong opinion.
@FPP_Tech at first thanks for your reply! Appreciate it. But doesn't a lower ( b550) motherboard have lower bus speeds? Or lower m.2 speeds? Also, I'm waiting for rtx 5000 cards, should I also wait for the (rumored) new amd GPU to compare?
I'm liking the asrock x870e phantom nova more than the TUF. its only about 30 bucks more and seems to have the best price to performance of all the boards. No lane sharing with pcie1 16 slot for gpu.
Can't argue with that. Asrock usually packs in the most features per dollar. Their quality has gone up a lot in the last few years as well. I'm not a huge fan of their UEFI layout, but that's a personal preference thing, not an issue. Good luck with your build!
Intel was having issues with pumping too much power into the CPU and motherboard manufacturers were blaming Intel and Intel was blaming them now they have a baseline profile in the bios lol. I’m going with the ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero and Ryzen 7 9800X3D and my ALF III 360 Black with G Skill ultra low latency cl28 6000MHz 2x16gb and my Asus RTX 4080 Super and Samsung 990 EVO PRO 2TB M.2 and Corsair rm1000x 80 gold fully modular strictly for gaming purposes.
Neighborhoods gonna dim when you boot that thing up! I just ordered my 9800X3D. Finally back to AMd since bulldozer my fx 8350days. I’m excited and although switching from a i5 12600k I’m curious to see the gains in the specific games I play.
32GB is more than enough for 99% of people. There's 0 benefit in having more than you need. Even working with 4k video, I rarely run into issues on my editing rig running 32GB.
Yea, I genuinely liked this board. No over the top frills, just functional & damn sexy. Still a bit spendy at $310, but that's modern pricing across the board.
@HellyKachhadiya The e-E is higher in the product stack & does have a bit better specs & features. It also comes in quite a bit more expensive (linked below for current pricing). 99% of people would be more than OK with the TUF board. Heck, even this is overkill for 95% of people out there. amzn.to/4flaUe9
If you're new to AM5 & have the extra budget, it's definitely worth the $40-$50 price difference. I wouldn't upgrade if I already have an x670, but for sure, if you're new to the platform, there's value in it. Plus, if you're comparing the TUF 670 to tuf 870, there are some really nice improvements. Good luck with your build!
The stuff I'm hearing sounds good, but haven't had a chance yet. the next board we take a look at will be a gigabyte. I can tell you the 9800x3d seems to be really receptive to OC'ing, so no boost numbers seem that unrealistic.
@ I'll be checking out your upcoming review then, I'll be buying a pc around the end of the month and at first I was planning on getting the b650 tomahawk. If the x3d boost is worth it I might change the motherboard
The problem is that apparently, Asus TUF has been having issues. It’s challenging for someone building a PC to choose a motherboard with so much criticism against ASUS. You have the Gigabyte X870 Gaming X WiFi 7, which does the same thing and is much cheaper.
My bad on the late reply. It's 100% fair to be concerned with ASUS after sale support right now. They've made a lot of changes to hopefully improve, but I don't blame ya for wanting to see results 1st. Haven't had a chance to play with any Gigabyte x870's but I loved several of their 600 series boards & they're often a fan favorite. Don't sleep on Asrock either. They seem to be the go to for OC'ing right now.
