When i was a kid in the 80s my father had a dragon cassette deck by them. Someone broke in and stole his complete stereo system when we were away on a weekend. I remember how broken hearted he was over that. Years later he designed and built a home recording studio with the majority of the equipment being old tube technology with a digital converter at the end.
Great video, thank you for stirring up some of my forgotten memories. Im thinking of showing him your video. Today is his 106th day on hospice (at home).

@@cassettedeck-walkman-repair yep he was crushed over it. I remember him being so excited when he brought it home. I was 8-9 years old and now forever I'll remember that piece of gear. We're pretty sure it was his brother who stole it but he didn't pursue it. Then in the late 90s he had tax problems and had to sell the studio gear. The equipment was one of a kind. Like Siemens microphone preamps the Beatles owned (and had custom built), a Fairchild compressor and more.
I'm so glad I found this video. I can't wait to show him your video. I'm betting he'll binge watch your channel.

When removing the plastic washer, I hold a little blue tack on it while I pry it up. The washer sticks to the blue tack and you don't lose it. I'm sure you did this for the video, but you also don't need to take the mech out to replace the idler tire.

Great work. I'm definitely taking notes as I need to service a CR-1 that's been on my desk for a while.
Couple suggestions would be to show different camera angles - during playback testing (azimuth adjustment) a front on view of inserting the tapes, and then switch back to overhead when adjusting the pots. Also jump cut the tool searching instead of replacing the capstan motor.
Would be interested in seeing you service a 3-head deck and show the process of adjusting all of the pots as it seems the 2-head is a lot more work having to rec/play over and over.
    Cheers.

I am not sure what you mean with ‘replacing the capstan motor’ ? But i have 2 high end 3 head decks i will be working on next week and will take some extra time on the adjustment and video that more in depth
The CR1 is a good deck , possibly with orange caps that may benefit from replacing, good luck 🍀!

This was a very nice video. I really learned a lot. I own a Nakamichi 482, a three head cassette deck I bought new back in the early 80's. It seems like every time I took it in to Nakamichi for repair, it always cost $150.00 - $165.00. It sounded wonderful. Of course it needs an overhaul now. Maybe one day I'll get it done one more time.
If you plan to use the deck for years, then it really doesn't matter what the cost is. If you're trying to make a profit, that might be different. - Thomas
