    Example 2 seemed deeper, richer, warmer and I was sure that example 2 had to be the Bösendorfer. Wow! Impressed and pleasantly surprised with how wrong I was.

      Attempting to discern the difference of the two piano's tonal quality is made difficult in so many ways because of the mode of recording and play back. Stating the obvious. I got it wrong. The truth is that the art is in the artist. A great artist can make a good instrument sound amazing. You, Aimee, make both pianos sound awesome.

    Really neat video and great performance! In my opinion one of the major differences between the pianos is best heard in how the tone sustains/fades after a note is played. The Bosendorfer really carries each sound over a smooth slope down, with rich tones. That being said, there are beautiful things about the piano you own too! And of course, listening with headphones or proper speakers is crucial here. Thank you again for a cool video :)

    • @faziolifairmont8125
      @faziolifairmont8125 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that is also because of the environment, and the sound recorder is basically ' autofocusing' the sound, by leveling volume against noise. fading out the notes in a weird way. the mid and upper section of pianos are kinda the same. you shouldnt be able to hear a difference between a 6 and 9 foot grand. except for the texture of the bass notes. shorterpianos are warmer. sometimes its even prefered.

      Bösendorfers tend to be more mellow and not as powerful (think Steinway) as other pianos, this by design, they go more for tone color. I learned this from an official Bösendorfer technician.

    I have always loved the Bosendorfer sound. The best thing Yamaha did was sample the Bosendorfer for their keyboards. I am just re learning the piano as an adult and the Bosendorfer sampling sold me on the digital piano to get (along with weighted action). Having said all that your piano sounds amazing AND you have a RELATIONSHIP with it, that is where the magic occurs in music. Thanks for the video!

  • @johnzimmerman7543

    Love your channel and music! Bravo on beautiful playing and teaching.
    Had the opportunity to play around 50 pianos over a couple days at a gallery with the same idea in mind. Most were fairly high end: Steinway C/D, Yamaha Hand-built 7', Bösendorfer (several including an Oscar Peterson signature edition that was $230K ! ), and a few Schimmels.
    After lengthy time and discussion with the techs and my own tuner/tech, it all came down to voicing. A well voiced and well tuned piano will sound and feel amazing. That tuning and voicing will stay the way you want it longer with a quality construction instrument and your sound board will stand the test of time better.
    Honestly, after all the playing, the $24K Schimmel was 99 percent of everything the best (but not most expensive) Bösendorfer was for around 1/10th the cost.
    Out of curiosity about voicing and key action regulation, I took my $1,200 Baldwin upright that's almost 40 years old and had my favorite piano tech rework, re-voice and weight the keys. After several visits and around $500 I have a fantastic home practice instrument that rivals just about anything at the showroom.
    Now the problem of finding a good tech.......that takes a lot of playing a lot of pianos and searching to find out who maintains the ones you like.
    Thanks again for covering this very intriguing subject and doing it with such beautiful playing (and singing!).

    I got it right, because I was familiar with your piano sound , having listened to it before. I believe your piano sounds more "live" while the Bosendorfer was a bit more mellow. Not even a question, the Bosendorfer is absolutely brighter, but within the realm of the Big Boys (Steinway, Yamaha, etc), Bosendorfer is definitely softer than the others. I was actually kind of surprised that Amy's baby grand was softer than the Bosendorfer.

    As a recording engineer and music producer, I’d better be able to hear the difference!! Being frank, though, there’s no substitute for string length; you’re giving up 25 inches to the B! So, to be absolutely fair, this “contest” shall we say, was between apples and oranges, with your apples having to compete with the B’s oranges. Unfair comparison from the beginning.
    Having said that, I believe whole heartedly had we put a 7’4” version of your piano up against the B, very very very few people on the planet would have been able to discern between the two.
    Bottom line, bang for the buck? Your piano kicks the B’s butt, hands down!

    I love the Bosendorfer, and was glad I could tell the difference, but I think the main reason I could tell the difference is because I knew how your piano sounded like...from watching all your other videos..... I need to ask ..How about the feel of each.. Did you like the way one reacted, compared to another? I have a Kawai MP11, although I know it is an electric digital piano, I really love the feel of it, and that is important to me.. I love a piano that has an awesome response, and also a piano that makes me sound better than I am...lol I loved this video.. Thank you... Den

    I got it right, but I have a soft spot for the smaller 5'2" grands. I love the sound of yours. I was very lucky and was able to play the Bosendorfer 225 for a weekend when I accompanied a friend's lecture/recital at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. You call it a "beast" and I guess in size, it certainly is. The one I had the privilege to play behaved nothing like a beast. It remains the most responsive and intuitive instrument I have ever played. As soon as a thought crossed my mind, the piano "magically' turned that thought into exactly what I wanted. I will never forget that experience. My personal instrument is a Knabe that is around fifty years old. Thanks for your videos.

    Just bought my son a Hallet Davis 5'7", I don't play piano but have good ear for music and so is my 15 yr old son. We picked the Hallet Davis because the strings and hammers are German made just like the Steinway Grand, also the design of the sound board of the Hallet Davis was copied from the Steinway, they call it German face, the edge is also thicker to produce a deeper bass, this is the reason it was booming and does not sound like a small piano. The similarities of the Hallet to the Steinway sound was the nearest sound compared to other pianos like the Young Chang, Kawai, Yamaha etc. My son tried out a lot of pianos and we even recorded it, and the Hallet was the best sounding piano in the similar price range.

  • @AsherMandrake

    With the lightly-played upper and lower register, it was very difficult to decide which piano was which in your test. The last notes in test number two gave it away. If you could play the entire range of notes on each of the pianos, we would all be able to hear just how wonderful your Hallet & Davis is, as well as hearing the majesty of the Bösendorfer.

    Got it right because of the room sound. Your room. Plus a certain difference on the lower register, which was to be expected, but was surprisingly subtle. My favorite recorded piano sound is the fabled Bechstein grand on Queen and Elton John recordings. Holy grail stuff. I really enjoyed your treatment of "Light my Fire." Very nice! A few years ago I played a Bösendorfer at a piano store in SanDiego. They were so kind and let me play as long as I wanted. What an amazing instrument. Just improvising, its clear tones inspired me to play things I don't think I would have on another piano.

  • @GHRiz
    @GHRiz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I could definitely tell there was a difference, and I guessed them correctly, but I guessed. There isn't something that I can point to and say objectively "that made me know that it was one piano vs the other". Not going to lie though, subjectively to my ear, I actually like the sound of yours better, certainly enough to justify not spending 25x as much. :)

  • @uumlau
    @uumlau 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I could tell the difference because Example II was more out of tune, sounded more like an upright. All pianos have a little bit of chorusing of slightly out-of-tune strings, but the Bosendorfer (Example I) had much clearer tonality. I suspect that the size makes a difference, in that with longer strings, it is perhaps easier to get into tune and - importantly - stay in tune. That said, a $5300 grand piano is a steal and worth every penny. For a few years, I owned a $750 grand piano - not as nice as yours, kind of beat up - and it was a pleasure while it lasted.

  • @BenJogan
    @BenJogan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I got the example right! Yeah! Your piano of course is smaller and there's a noticeable difference in the sound "clarity" of the strings, especially the lower ones. You can hear the more "dissonant" overtones (compared to the bosendorfer) layering on each other especially while the damper pedal is pressed. That's pretty obvious and it's the reason why the bosendorfer sounds "cleaner", but also "colder", in fact some people might like the "warmer" and resonating character of your piano better - I do!
    And let's not forget: you piano beautifully held a hell of a comparison with that monster!! It really sounds great! Besides that, your performance of course is the most important thing ;) Many compliments

    Got it right (for a few reasons). The Bosendorfer, like all acoustics pianos, have a distinctive sound from their soundboard(s). I like the Bosendorfer soundboard because of the 'woody' sound and the snap to the hammer action. You also sound very comfortable and familiar on your own 'axe', naturally. Very nice recording and great topic - love sound comparisons. European Steinway is my absolute favorite - lots of punch and very powerful overtones. Great job Amy 👍

    I thought #2 sounded better. I know you used the same mic setup for both recordings, but it sounded like something was going on in recording #1 where the stereo field didn't have much in the middle. It sounded like right-hand notes were coming from both sides as if there was a reflection. So the Bosen sounded kind of hollow for that reason, to my ear. Either way, your piano at home sounds great and the way you're micing it is working!

    • @duncanmalashock
      @duncanmalashock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I heard something funny in the stereo field too, what sounded like a delay between the left and right channels. Is it possible they may have gotten slightly out of sync somehow?

    • @performingartist
      @performingartist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was going to comment the same thing. Definitely something strange going on with the stereo imaging in the first example. It would be a better comparison if the piano s were miced from further away.

    I nailed it! The Bosendorfer sounded more "sterile" to my ears. It was wonderfully tuned, and I think it would sound fantastic in a concert hall, but yours had a bit more character, I thought. I wonder how much of that is the acoustics of the room an/or my familiarity having heard you play that piano a hundred times. Or it was a good guess ;)
    On a different note, I noticed you changed the gender of the speaker in "Light My Fire". I've had this conversation a few times in the past with my musician friends and it always seems to boil down to two arguments. Either 1) the song tells the story the writer wanted to tell, and you shouldn't change the gender because (to some degree) it changes the meaning of the lyrics, or 2) the song is malleable and up to the performers (and listeners) interpretation, so you can change the gender to tell the story that you, the performer, want to tell. I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the matter. Great video as always!

      Sometimes I don’t change gender. That’s a more recent decision of mine. I’ve been singing this one for years so I changed it like ten years ago before I decided it doesn’t really matter. Now it’s just habit.

      I agree, especially in a tune like this. I don't think it really makes a difference. I think music., like literature, is up to the listener and performer and authorial intent is far less important. Nice rendition of that tune, by the way. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard you start singing. I certainly wasn't expecting the Doors :)

    Nailed the Bosendorfer right away but I know what they sound like. I thought your piano sounded great, if you had the Bosendorfer full time it would really sing - So you better start saving up! Bosendorfer - the very best materials, greate workmanship, incredible durability, it can take incredible punishment from players and still sound great. Most of us just need a great sound and consistent feel and so we can buy something much cheaper plus our families can eat. Great demo though now I have piano envy again.

    Miss Aimee, good morn. The sound is accentuated and made so emotionally caressing at 5:30 - 5:40. It feels like the connected notes are rolling. Just exquisite and lovely. I played back your soundtrack on a desktop PC into a Samsung QLED TV via HDMI. Then out the back side Optical-Digital Audio output through a powered Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) to a Klipsch 2.1 Promedia THX certified powered speaker system. The sound is just exquisite, powerful and precise. Not sure how accurate the reproduced sound is, but I don't care about that. Just know that the music is soooo enjoyable. Especially when you slow roll the notes. I don't know how to play the piano but my ears can tell when someone is playing well or not, and whether the piano itself sounds good or not. The Bosen just has the piano-ness sound that feels extended without sounding tinny or brassy or broken - pinpoint and exact. Like the difference between a cheap car and Jag/Mercedes. It also helps that you used a Rode condenser mike. Just for giggles I also listened to the same track on a separate 9.1 system powered by a Denon Receiver both in straight stereo and Atmos surround - it merely sounded more expanded and detailed. Would love to hear other pieces similarly played. Nice voice too. Thank you and bravo!

    Pity for me. I decided to be clever. Example one sounded to me too sterile...like a Yamaha....I like my upright Feurich better.... Example 2 sounded way more richer. So...an older less good tuned piano? After both examples I decided to stay with my Feurich. You see I was wrong too! Lucky for me, if I would have decided to buy example 2 it would not cost me a fortune. Thanks!

  • @richardbrandeis4879

    There was a distinct difference in the brightness of tone in the upper registers on the Bosendorfer as opposed to the Hallet. Yet, there was a very noticeable softness of the Hallet and almost smokey type of sound. Some may say a warmer sound. Personal preference for a musician depends on how he or she accepts the sound quality of the instrument, but at least in this test, both would probably be acceptable if not for the huge price difference. Had it been possible, I would have thrown a Steinway into the mix.

    Thanks, Aimee. That was fun. I guessed correctly. It was tough, though. The room sound was different in each recording, so that complicated the choosing. The bass notes were the giveaway. I have a Yamaha C7D that I shopped and shopped to find. I played a lot of C7's in the process until I found one that has bass notes that sound even better than a lot of 9' grands. I have played a lot of different pianos over the years.

    Amy, your piano is slightly out of tune, especially in middle registers. This was a dead giveaway. I bought a hybrid Yamaha piano (N2) because I could not stand having my piano being out of tune. With my hybrid I have a sound of the 100k piano with the benefit of it being always in tune since the sound is digital. The action is like on analog piano so it feels like playing regular grand.

      Two years after thinking the same... I would sell the AvantGrand and get myself a real piano. Many advantages (no tuning, less space, different voices, settings etc., silent when needed without changes in sound quality), but the sound just ain't there. JMHO.

    I guessed correctly but mainly (I think) because I recognized the sound of your piano from your videos and live streams. It’s not just familiarity though. Your piano has a particular tone, timbre and - when combined with your voice - creates a beautiful texture that I think I prefer. A certain voice with a certain instrument can sometimes create a third “voice” that’s more than the sum of its parts (in this case 1 + 1 = 3) and that’s the best way I can think to describe it. You’ve definitely got the right instrument there, as staggeringly beautiful as the Bösendorfer looks and sounds.

    Thanks Aimee for the video. I got it right too. I'm not an expert in piano but to my ears the very clear difference is when Aimee plays a combination of notes (chords, continuos arpeggios or a long run with pedal). The Bosendorfer just gives much more clarity than Aimee's Baby Grand.
