They started in 1983/84 as soundgarden. Chris Cornell played drums and sang at the time. Had a few demos and ep albums on SubPop Records in Seattle, WA. In 1987 the got signed to a bigger label and released Louder Than Love in 1988. They were considered the band that got the Seattle subpop scene on radar. And the band that many bands from Seattle looked up to, along with a few other great leaders of the subpop aka " grunge" scene.
Great reaction!! Outshined was such a rocker (like Rusty Cage, but Jesus just blows them away IMHO)...and Chris' voice on all! Wow! RIP Mr. Cornell. HIGHLY recommend Searching With My Good Eye Closed (my favourite) also from that same album! (Badmotorfinger - what an amazing release!). Superunknown was indeed 'super' - banger after banger, and yes, the sound production was incredible! Didn't matter over headphones or good speakers - you were rocking! Fell On is one of the calmer tracks...others are 4th Of July and Like Suicide, both which you MUST hear! Blow Up is my favourite track on that album, but in general it's my least favourite album. Cheers!
While 'Superunknown' was the album, that REALLY made Soundgarden a household name in the mainstream, I personally still feel 'Badmotorfinger' is their best album; in fact it might just be my favorite grunge album all together.. 🤔
Badmotorfinger is my favourite album, but if I'm being honest, from a songwriting, vocal, atmosphere and production standpoint, Superunknown is untoppable, its a masterpiece of an album. I'd still rather listen to BMF though :)
My essential Soundgarden recommendations: Beyond the Wheel, Hands All Over, Rusty Cage, Outshined, Room a Thousand Years Wide, My Wave, Fell on Black Days, Limo Wreck, The Day I Tried to Live, Fresh Tendrils, 4th of Juli, Zero Chance, Ty Cobb, Blow Up the Outside World, Never the Machine Forever, A Thousand Days Before, Rowing, ...
Kira, you're my favorite reactor to Grunge here on TH-cam. You know why? You're always banging your head and moving around in your chair. You feel the music and it's always awesome to see. Kind of remind me of Joe Cocker in that regard. Not in the looks department of course, but there was a man who swayed to every note because the music flowed through him.
I first heard Soundgarden with Louder Than Love, and then Jesus Christ Pose came along and blew my mind (I first heard it along with the official video). I was all in, this was THE song that set them apart from the pack.
To be fair, your patrons DID select the "softest" tracks off of Superunknown and Down On The Upside. I think there's alot off Superunknown you'll love and Down On The Upside has quite a few gems(and it probably has the most tracks of any of their albums; it really goes all over ghe place).
So many more great songs. Slaves and Bulldozers, Spoonman, My Wave, Superunknown, Pretty Noose, Burden in My Hand and Black Hole Sun. Their sound is so varied over the years. My Fav songs are Outshined, Spoonman, and Burden in My Hand. Superunknown is their most varied album. It is less heavy that Badmotorfinger. Spoonman and My Wave are great heavier songs on Superunknown. The last 2 choices would not have been my first picks for these 2 albums, but they are great songs. Fell on Black Days was a big hit single but softer. Black Hole Sun is one of the biggest rock songs of the 90s but not one of my favs. It was so popular that a lot of people couldn't even name another Soundgarden song. It is a shame as they have lots of great songs. Badmotorfinger is too heavy for the casual grunge fan. It is more hard rock.
Kira said the her reaction to Gun is up on Patreon, so looks like she's dipping into it! I'd love to hear her reaction to Ugly Truth, one of my favorites ever (tho more fun to listen to in live versions, imo)
Chris Cornell's lyrics don't get overshadowed by his amazing voice. He's one of the best overall songwriters of the 80s and 90s. Given Chris's demise these songs hit me right in the feels even 30 yrs later.
Hey Kira, come to think of it, when I first heard Jesus Christ pose, I honestly felt a bit frightened. But, something kept drawing me back. It ended up being my favorite song. But, I know what you mean!
First time viewer here, and immediately impressed by how much you’re both feeling the music but still keenly LISTENING and appreciating the shifts and changes 😊
There's a really great accoustic version of Blow Up The Outside World that was put on TH-cam on the Garden Of Sound channel in 2013. Highly recommend it.
4th of July is very sludgy/doom so you'll probably love that song off of Superunknown. For Down On The Upside i'd say check out Pretty Noose & Burden In My Hand. For pre Badmotorfinger check out Beyond The Wheel. Also have you not listened to Black Hole Sun yet? It's thier most famous song.
So wild to see you call em that, when I went to see em open for GnR( my first concert) my friends were going for GnR but i was going for SoundGarden. They asked me what they were like and I said they are Seattle’s Black Sabbath. They blew GnR off the stage.
@loud621 Interesting! Yeah, it was kind of an "in joke" between myself and a friend of mine. We were both old-school Sabbath fans (and since: Seventh Star [which was slated to be an Iommi solo album (but the label wouldn't permit him to release it as one!! 😡🙄🤦)], we had not considered "Black Sabbath" to, actually, be in existence.) and while some Sabbath had a "sludgy" feel, Soundgarden had taken that to a new level!! We got turned-on to them via: Louder Than Love [I saw that tour: Voi Vod (headlining) with Soundgarden and Faith No More opening! 3-5 times!! - I only stayed for Voi Vod once! 😂😋😛. It was a GREAT show!!!] and when Badmotorfinger appeared, we, definitely, felt that: the riffing and types of grooves Soundgarden were using on that were something approaching "a modernized version of early-mid. '70s Sabbath." ...We loved it! I never saw them open for G 'n' R, but: I can imagine that they tore a FEW rooves off of that joint! - They were leaner, meaner, darker, more powerful, ...than anything the stadium antics of Guns 'n' Poseurs could ever reach, at that stage!!! 🤘🤘 I saw Soundgarden on the Lollapalooza tour that summer (that was Perry Farrell's second effort at doing it and after that, it became an annual event, in the '90s.) and, also, at a club show (although I forget who they played with.). They were tearing shi+ up by that point! (and this is before "the world fell in love with them" after: Superunknown was released!). I bet that was a GREAT night! Glad you got to see them at that stage!! They were killers, on stage. in those days! Superb! 🤘🤘
@ Yea it was a great show. And they were big influences on me, along with the Melvins. I’m from the panhandle of FL and Sludge is the thing in this area. My band was around from 95-96 until 2013 and I have been very lucky to have shared the stage with many of my favorite bands such as Crowbar, GoatWhore, High on Fire, Deicide, Obituary, Nile, Municipal Waste, Cephalic Carnage, Cavalera Conspiracy, Soilent Green…and others. But the 2 bands I really wish I could have been able to open for are Acid Bath and Soundgarden. I know our music would not have been very popular at a SG show but would have been a great nite even if they booed us off the stage. Was really optimistic about Acid Bath reunion and chances of seeing them again, but Alex (bass) has dropped out of the project and Sammy is in Europe with GoatWhore so not good timing at all. But I did go ahead and text Ben(singer of GW) and asked him to throw my name in the hat to take over on bass(as that’s what I played). Ben did some guest vocals on our album we released many years ago and I’ve kept in touch, so I thought it can’t hurt to have him mention it to Sammy. I haven’t played at that level or toured in a decade, but it’s like riding a bike…I hope?
Soundgarden's debut album is entitled: Ultramega O.K. [released in: 1988]; Their sophomore release was: Louder Than Love [1989] (Saw them 4 times on different legs of this tour) Badmotorfinger was their 3rd album [released in 1991]. ....
I still like the early stuff from Soundgarden the most (though they stayed great up until the end), "Loud Love" is my alltime favourite record. But Jesus Christ Pose is my favourite single song from them nontheless. That driving and busy tom-groove together with the spiralling hypnotic main riff is just outstanding.
Hey Kira! If you are going to dwelve into death metal, here are my humble options: - Flesh and the Power it Holds, by Death - Heartwork, by Carcass - Hammer Smashed Face, by Cannibal Corpse Cheers!! :)
'Superunknown' '94 by Soundgarden is my favorite album from seattle grunge! If you want to hear glamorous combination of '90-s grungie alt' rock with trip-hop - listen to PJ Harvey masterpiece 'Is This Desire?' '98 album.
"Ultramega OK" was Soundgarden's first proper LP, but they released two EPs prior one is "Screaming Life" and the other is "Fopp." They combined the two to make one big EP. It's been said by Chris Cornell that "Badmotorfinger" is the apex of the older iteration of Soundgarden. "Superuknown" and "Down on the Upside" explores other aspects of their songwriting and talent. "Down on the Upside" is my favorite album from them because it's like a musical journey.
29:09 - if you want the energy then the big tracks from their later albums are MY WAVE (a huge hit), SUPERUNKNOWN (the title track of the album) and PRETTY NOOSE from the other album. But yeah Soundgarden mellowed out a fair bit and got a lot more experimental as they went along compared to their earlier stuff.
Pretty Noose, Holy Water, Burden in my hand, Just like suicide, The day i tried to live, 4th of July, New Damage, My Wave, Mind Riot, Hands all over, Black Rain. The Badmotorfinger album was more genuine grunge, whereas the Superunknown album was a lot more commercial but still good.
My favourites of Soundgarden are from Superunknown. Interestingly these songs are some of the least listened to songs on Spotify. 6. Head Down. 9. Limo Wreck. 13. 4th Of July.
After BMTF the other albums take a little getting used to but they are quite intricate and artful in their own ways, Soundgardens later work I think is the most experimental a big grunge band got in that period. But all are great in their own way and for different moods.
It's always nice seeing younger generations listening to the music from my youth lol. I was 16 when this song came out. Awesome job doing your analysis 👍👍
Glad youre reviewing these tracks! Now i have to go listen to my other lesser-known favorites off Badmotorfinger, Searching With My Good Eye Closed and Room a Thousand Years Wide.
Lived through the grunge era. Soundgarden was always my favorite. Especially Louder Than Love. We were listening to that before the whole scene took off. Just brings back good memories.
Its a great song but if I were to pick one song for someone who had never heard of Soundgarden, it would NOT be Fell on Black Days. While its a great song, I think a lot of people mistake it for defining the sound of the band.
I would definitely go back and hit Flower, Loud Love, Hands All Over, and Slaves and Bulldozers- a little more raw & grungy, and Cornell’s scream was at its peak. Also definitely should hit Temple of the Dog- Hunger Strike for some Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder goodness!
Always nice to see Soundgarden getting some appreciation from a young'un. :) Yes, JesusChristPose does tend to give the listener anxiety! LOL BlowUpTheOutsideWorld swings between being a Beatles-being-introspective thing & the lads smashing out a thumping rock track. The whole "Down on the upside" album is easier to appreciate with more years on you - try it again a decade or two from now. ;) If you're preferring the energy of the "Badmotorfinger" tracks, I should probabaly suggest you listen thru the "Louder Than Love" album from '89, & the full "Badmotorfinger" album. Even "Superunknown" from '94 is quite "grown -up" compared to LTL & Badmo.... altho it's widely accepted as their best work. Hope this helps. :)

Badmotorfinger is a 11/10 classic album, maybe their best album!
@@jetblackstonecold I'm kinda sus, I love superunknown, Soundgarden is that type of band that doesn't have bad albums.

The entire Badmotorfinger album is a must ❤
Slaves & Bulldozers is a fan favorite. You will love it if you listen to it at some point.
Slaves and Bulldozers though
Just missed out
Honestly among the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard.
Definitely missed out.
Tighter & Tighter
the vocals in slaves and bulldozers are next level
This is not fair. Each Soundgarden album deserves it own full reaction.
starting with the debut🎉

Chris was a phenom. Even if you like death metal hip hop rap country rock this man was above and beyond. One of the greatest vocalists imo.
RIP to the legend, Chris Cornell. Taken far too soon.

Badmotorfinger is good but Superunknown is where they peaked IMO. Chris's vocals got richer, lyrics more mature, HQ engineering.
I've listened to most of Superunknown and BMF, Badmotorfinger is more interesting to me
Soundgarden>Nirvana. I will die on that hill.
I'm right there with you on that
@@brenttuttle7268 My favorite song is 4th of July. Behind the Wheel is up there though.
Soundgarden and Alice in Chain's 🤘 and I really dig Gruntruck
Dude, easily.
No one really debates that. Chris and Layne were far superior to Kurt, and I'm a Nirvana fan.
Screaming Trees and their album "Sweet Oblivion" are an underrated part of the grunge pantheon.
My branch is the Posies. But I feel you.
Totally man, and GRUNTRUCK

Yep

The best Soundgarden song that nobody talks about? Tighter & Tighter off Down on the Upside!
Overfloater is great
Tighter and tighter is an absolute underrated banger
Yes! Tighter and Tighter has one of the best build-ups of any song, ever, until it explodes similar to Mailman
Ty Cobb
"Badmotorfinger" was their magnum opus for me. Every track is a banger. Top 5 grunge albums.
Matt Cameron your new favorite drummer, welcome!
Max Roach, John Bonham, Ian Paice, Dave Lombardo, Matt Cameron. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Room a Thousand Years Wide! ❤
Tomorrow begat tomorrow… Tomorrow begat tomorrow..
Burden In My Hand, Pretty Noose, and The Day I Tried To Live. Bringing back memories of my youth sitting in my room playing video games.

Jesus Christ Pose... that bass tone! So compressed and tight!
That’s a great way to explain it
Ben has a way of accenting the songs just enough. Most of the time you can’t hear him but when he comes in you definitely notice!
@ralphdougherty1844 SG's rythm section is an incredible foundation with Ben and Matt Cameron, underrated drum player imho.
I really like the chord progressions in Blow Up The Outside World

"Classic Grunge" I wasn't ready to hear those two words together. Damn.

Slaves & Bulldozers is one of Cornell's greatest vocal performances ever committed to tape.
Their "Ultra Mega OK" E.P. preceded Louder Than Love
Black hole sun is a Soundgarden song highly applicable for today
Its a great song but if I were to pick one song for someone who had never heard of Soundgarden, it would NOT be Fell on Black Days. While its a great song, I think a lot of people mistake it for defining the sound of the band.
The first Audioslave album was damn near perfect. I think you'll like any of the songs off that when you get to that part of Chris' catalog.
I love your photo lol
Badmotorfinger is an amazing album by an amazing group. Every song is awesome 😍
Temple Of The Dog - Hunger Strike
Always nice to see Soundgarden getting some appreciation from a young'un. :)
Yes, JesusChristPose does tend to give the listener anxiety! LOL
BlowUpTheOutsideWorld swings between being a Beatles-being-introspective thing & the lads smashing out a thumping rock track. The whole "Down on the upside" album is easier to appreciate with more years on you - try it again a decade or two from now. ;)
If you're preferring the energy of the "Badmotorfinger" tracks, I should probabaly suggest you listen thru the "Louder Than Love" album from '89, & the full "Badmotorfinger" album. Even "Superunknown" from '94 is quite "grown -up" compared to LTL & Badmo.... altho it's widely accepted as their best work. Hope this helps. :)
