Born on the Breadline (Poverty Documentary) | Real Stories

  • It is a frightening fact that in today’s affluent Britain almost one in three children live in poverty. Their childhood has been stolen: they are denied a childhood free of adult cares and worries. Poverty and lack of social support forces them to make adult decisions and bear adult responsibilities long before they should.
Children born into poverty, many into unemployed and broken families, are instantly disadvantaged. Living in run-down areas they quickly become socially excluded, and a high percentage will be excluded from school, too. Uneducated, bored and often miserable it is not uncommon for them to turn to crime. It’s often for kicks, but for many it becomes a way of life.

My partner was brought up in poverty but with loving parents and taught to go to school, work hard and do the right things in life. She had nothing; never had a bike, never had meat for food, etc. She and her brother are both decent, educated people. This documentary isn't about poverty, it's about neglect. Not certain I would have grown up like this but documentaries like these make me think what could have been. 31 years later I met my birth mum and she and her husband (not my father) both work, own their own home and have children but I don't think life would have been how it is now for both of us had she kept me.

They are unkempt, have a lot of bruises, look unwell with really pale skin and dark circles under their eyes among other thngs. I lived in East Germany, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, for four years when I was born. We lived in extreme poverty, I remember when my father came home after his payday with a loaf of bread and he said that was all we could afford for food for the week after bills. The apartment in winter was absolutely freezing, I remember when me and my twin would get our duvets and crawl under the bunk beds, snuggling together when the cold had reached our insides. Now we live in Schleswig-Hostein, where our life is much better and I would like to thank Mr and Mrs Neumann from Hessen, who gave us support and sponsered us during our time in poverty. We couldn't have been where we are today without you, and I send a message of hope to all children across the world living in these circumstances.

THAT is poverty. This is just laziness and neglect. They've got big council houses, treat them like crap, the parents are out all day but don't work(?), everything is filthy and they've got the law chasing them for hushed up reasons that aren't fully explained. You lived through miserable poverty, but you were a family. These kids have got food, shelter and clothing, but no families. It's just terribly sad, and the parents are outright neglectful and lazy.

my family and i grew up poor but damn, my mom kept it clean. even when we were in a small one room apartment, she made sure we had food, clothes, went to school, and stayed out of trouble. these patents let their kids do whatever they want at all hours of the day. you don't have to be dirty just because you're poor, the patents need to clean up their homes and kids.

Hello Julia, Yes I thought the same about the twins and the other young sister. I felt love for those beautiful children, I would just love to clean them in a lovely hot bath, bubbles as well....and the young baby boy with his mucky face....I would love for them to have beautiful pretty dresses... and dress them from head to foot...They had real old heads on them..I had to smile when the twins are in the kitchin and their Mother was there, and the twins kept mentioning about the drugs and her dad, or step dad....and the mother kept telling her to shush....You see they are taking in all thats around them and making an understanding off how an what they see. Anyway This documentary was brilliantly made and had me glued to the screen from start to finish.......bye from Mary in Ireland.

Mary Sybil One of the girls had dental issues. Poor kids are less likely to get proper dental care, education on teeth care and if they need tooth extractions or fluoride varnish. My 8 year old has 'shark teeth' top and bottom. She had one tooth extraction once and these poor girls wouldn't know that sugar is bad for teeth.

People are saying they don't feel bad for the adults, that they should know better and so on, but the adults were exactly those children years ago and grew up and had these children. just like most of the children in this documentary will grow up and have children and be terrible parents years from now. it never stops. just an ongoing circle of devastated children growing up to be awful parents. it's so sad. we look at these kids like "omg you poor thing!" and then later when they're drug addicted and living in a disgusting house with five h hi hi kids and a deadbeat boyfriend, we go "oh god how could they?! what terrible, trashy people." I just don't get how sad people feel for the children, and then just because someone is an adult, we assume they should have solved all the problems they were going through growing up and it's they're fault they're the worst at parenting. oh and how is it not a bigger deal that the kids aren't going to school?? like they can just show up or not?

    • @ASMRyouVEGANyet

Patty C I was hoping someone in the comment section would point this out. I keep reading "it's the parents fault" or "stop having children. use contraceptives"
like you said it's a terrible cycle. and also, all these people think that such and such types of people shouldn't have children, well, why not adopt these children in foster homes, etc.... I think more people would be willing to give up their children if they knew there was a better chance at them being adopted....

I don't think it's so much about poverty as it is child neglect. The government can't fix bad parenting. When my kids were growing up we didn't have alot of money at all. But, my kids were always fed, clothed kept clean and well looked after. And, if we didn't have alot of money we found free things to do. Even if it meant walking to the museum, or walking to the park. We made up quiz games at home where we only needed pen and paper. It's about love and attention. yes, money helps, but it's not everything. If the parents didn't smoke and drink there would be money for food.

Suey, oh wow musea, quizzes. You grew up in a different culture with probably parents who were a lot smarter/grew up learning those things. Mostly these kids have parents who grew up the same, and their parents before that. Everyone lacks education and musea seem like bullshit for them. Same as hygiene. I even see small differences between my lower educated parents and high educated(rich) parents from friends. For example: politics, art, musea, ballet, classical music are not important. And i grew up not interested in those things. And i probably won't teach my kids about politics either or discuss the wall street journal with them. Last week a girl at my school was annoyed about my table matters (eating with my fork at my right hand), i grew up with that not being important. That's the way we grow and differ from each other. If i were to marry a guy with different background it would change. But mostly you stay where you are used too, like these people.
And yes the hygiene/bullying and everything is sad in those children. 😐😩 but so difficult to change. The best would be to change the whole neighborhood so poor lives together with less poor and mix more to change everything in years.

I don't think this is true, my mother grew up poor...her parents didn't even have enough money for her to finish school, and both of them were alcoholics, but my mother always told us that she vowed that she will never put her kids through what she had to go through...and that is what she did...we never grew up rich but she always made sure that her kids had what they needed. So I don't agree that its a never ending cycle....it can end some where...it just takes one person to make a change...like that great saying goes 'BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD" and everything is not always about money.

    • @smootzi
      @smootzi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Shannon January Its anthropology, behavioral studies show. I never said its never ending. But it is difficult to change. I bet your mom had a difficult time getting out of that environment and meeting people who could help her get the life she wanted and cope with her background. It is just known that a lot of times people will grow up thinking that is the life and they will stay in it or have really no ability to get out if it (like having no money to go to school). I've heard a rich guy(whom i bet never had to work as a youngster) once said on TV before all the problems could go away if the poor people just went to work. That shows there is so much misunderstanding how to change.
I stand by what i said, if there needs to be change in helping the poor we shouldn't leave it up to them but change the neighborhood and environment.

The sympathy for whom, no matter how children turns out to be, they are born into a violent world, often by violent parents, they are the ones to blame, not the poor children. No matter how bad the adults situation are, they have children, why do they make children, if they dont want to give them a proper life with care and love, if they like to party or drink or take drugs, dont get children, for crying out loud....

Right, England is such a poor underdeveloped third world country isn't it? These people are not in Africa or the Middle East they are in Western Europe the only reason why Whites are poor here and by Whites I mean English is because their parents come from a long line of working class stupidity, not because they are actually unfortunate like they are in Modolva where 80 percent of people earn less than minimum wage this is a developed Western European country with billions of pounds. Yes, it is a capitalist country therefore the wealth isn't spread around evenly I agree with you about that but the only reason why they are poor is because they are Chavs or the descendants of Romani Gypsies. Someone who pays to live away from them gets pissed off when they move near you throw stones at your windows and brings around 30 of their friends per night to have parties and get their 14 year old dog faced girlfriends knocked up.

This seems more like children raising themselves. where are the parents? They have food, a place to live but bad parenting. Sadly the cycle of poverty will have repeated itself. The boys will be addict burglars in prison, the girls will be heroin addicts too, but earning their money through prostitution. The majority of these children should have been removed to a place of physical, psychological and emotional safety.

Social Work is probably severely underfunded in these areas, and there's probably a lot of social workers who either switch careers early on (because who would want to do this for 40 - 50 years?) or move to a better area. I dont blame them at all. You know who to actually blame for that - the government.

I was only 12 years old but I had adeep compassion for them. My family then emigrated to Australia. Kids are so Knowledgeable. They know much more than given credit for.
