    Watching old Columbo episodes again what strikes me is how hard Columbo is constantly working to make sure peopel don't work out too early how intelligent he is. He knows that he is obviously smarter than most people he comes into contact with but besides being naturally humble and good natured he is also accutely aware that the moment people realise it, his whole stategy is ruined. It takes real effort and skill to keep up his act and only a few criminals ever work it out in time.

    • @JohnJohansen2
      @JohnJohansen2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not sure that's his strategy.
      And, I'm not even sure he finds himself that intelligent. He "just" work his way about, finding the most obvious.

      @@JohnJohansen2 i’d say it’s most definitely his strategy, because you can tell in the end of the day when the criminals are befuddled that he outsmarted them. He’s very calm about it. It’s not like he was insulted that the criminal underestimated his intelligence. It was all part of his plan from the beginning.

    I love the episodes with Patrick McGoohan. The look Columbo gave him as he drove away said it all. He was already onto him. I think there's such a thing as being too accurate in your assumptions. You might expect that of a criminal defense lawyer, but when someone opens up to a policeman with such a thorough demonstration of his expertise, you can only conclude that here is someone who knows how to cover his bases. Columbo knew from the start that he had his man.

    I think he did two of the later Columbo episodes, this one and the one where he plays a funeral director. In both of them he looks very like a character called Mr Steinmetz he assumed in an earlier 70's episode where he plays a CIA spy, along with Leslie Nielsen before he became a comedy actor. Before that I knew McGoohan as "Dangerman" and "The Prisoner", both British TV shows.
