    Honestly, Jason's greatest feat is definitely not the Fleece, but rather the Argonaut itself. Being able to recruit all manner of heroes into a single crew, with the sole goal of having an adventure to chase after his dream, it speak well to his skill and charisma as a leader, as well as the focal point of the greatest part of the story itself.

    Honestly I like Jason’s NP way more than it being a Golden Fleece thing (ignoring the fact that the Fleece is an NP that Jason has that’s just treated as a skill in FGO, same as how Achilles’ NPs are treated as skills)
    Summoning his friends, and the more heroic he is the more friends are summoned, is actually pretty cool and also wholesome, especially if you know his story.

    it's so weird how Ozy is so many characters mesh together, you have Ramses the temple builder, Ozy the king of the long forgotten sands, Moses' brother from the bible, and the descendant of Ra making him "the sun". Honestly I'm just surprised that the buff to his NP was a skill cooldown reduction instead of a guts since the "I cant die while inside my pyramid" gimmick is present in his interludes, in Camelot and in prototype.

    • @foultarnished3134

      But those aren't different characters even historically. Ozymandius is the Greek name for Ramses II, and Ramses II is the Pharaoh most commonly regarded as the brother (through adoption) of Moses and often appears as such in retellings. As for the Ra bit, his name literally means "born of Ra".

      Moses' mother floated him down the Nile in a basket. The Pharaoh's daughter discovered him and took him in, raising him as her own. He later had a crisis of identity and fled into the wilderness. There he found God, returned to Egypt and demanded that the Pharaoh, his adopted brother, release his people alongside Aaron, his biological brother.

      @@SvafaBlackhand The problem is that the timeline put in the Bible makes Moses exist before Ramses was even born like over 200 years earlier. The only attributed to Ramses based on the land of Ramses mention in the Bible, which could be just people mentioning the modern name of place instead of the original name to be more specific for readers of the time. Also other Hebrew texts imply that Moses was an only child in pharaoh’s court. It must have been later that another heir was found and made king.

  • @GeorgeMonet

    Shuten's NP makes perfect sense because the poisoned wine is an important part of her story. The heroic spirits aren't the actual spirit of the dead hero but an embodiment of their legend. That poisoned wine is an important part of Shuten's legend.

  • @eonnexus
    @eonnexus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +71

    For Shuten, her essentially stealing the wine that was used to kill her and turning it against her enemies is utterly badass imo. XD And she's not the only servant that does this, Medusa Lily does too by using Harpe, so it seems there IS a precedent to be able to use what killed you as an NP.
    Ozy is a strange case of being several figures in one, someone else in the comments better explained it, but that likely what influenced his np being what it is.
    For the Argon Coin/Golden Fleece, Caster Medea actually CAN summon the dragon, Stay Night just doesn't have the materials necessary for the set up. If she had access to proper materials, she COULD summon it... but it comes with the chance of her not being able to CONTROL it. Our best bet would be a possible Rider (or Avenger?) Version of her,, or a new Animation Update that comes with an Interlude or chapter where it's actually touched on.
    As for Jason himself, I LOVE that his NP is the freinds he made along the way, and apparently they can each refuse his summons if they feel he isnt deserving of it, so the more heroic he is, the better his NP becomes, fitting for his legend, all things considered. XD
    And Moriarty's NP works best with Shinjuku in Mind, but it it IS supposedly based off of the book he wrote? I'm pretty sure that's just something Fate retconned(?) tho, so not sure how well that holds up.

    • @MajorLawliet
      @MajorLawliet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Medea doesn't care about materials, she outright just doesn't have the knowledge of how to summon it. The coin is all that's needed, but that's not her area of expertise.

    • @cheesepuffsthings
      @cheesepuffsthings 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      "The Dynamics of an Asteroid" is indeed a book Moriarty wrote, and I quote; "Is he not the celebrated author of The Dynamics of an Asteroid, a book which ascends to such rarefied heights of pure mathematics that it is said that there was no man in the scientific press capable of criticizing it?"
      Ostensibly (according to a story by Isaac Asimov) it's about calculating how one might go about destroying the Earth with a meteor.

  • @Brutalyte616
    @Brutalyte616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I always interpreted Shuten pouring her sake out onto the ground, it spreading, and then her drinking it after it's suddenly refilled implied that her Noble Phantasm establishes a territory that becomes her cup of sake. She also points out how harsh the sake is, saying it will melt the target down to the bones, which is probably a reference to several legends(specifically Journey To The West) where demons use incredibly strong magic alcohol to dissolve their victims and/or drink them.
    So if any of that holds true, then that implies Shuten's Noble Phantasm is based on the concept of devouring humans, which fits her characterization in FGO very well.

      It's like how a Heroic Spirit can qualify for multiple Servant Classes. Charlemagne, when summoned as a Saber for his deeds in the stories of the Matter of France, is called Charlemagne, but when summoned as a Ruler for his legacy of establishing the Carolingian and Holy Roman Empires, he's called Karl der Große. If I were to have Roland summoned as a Berserker, I would have him be called Orlando because he specifically qualifies as Berserker due to the events of Orlando Innamorato and _especially_ its very famous and influential continuation Orlando Furioso (the title itself means "Roland gone mad"); he's called Orlando in Italian rather than Roland like he is in French (the actual original name taken from history is Hrōþiland, who was a Frankish officer at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778, which is dramatized in The Song of Roland).
      TL;DR: They're the same Heroic Spirit, but different Servants.

    Fun Fact: Queen of Sheba’s NP is mistranslated!
    Well, partially, at least. In the JP version, according to the wiki, at least (I can’t read Japanese), the three Djinns appearing in the NP are named Achat, Shtayim and Shalosh. These just mean 1, 2 and 3. The NA subtitles change Achat to Ehad, which still means 1, but breaks the theming by being the masculine version of 1, whereas Achat, Shtayim and Shalosh are all feminine.

    Shuten sits in a similar vein as Medusa and a few others where their NP stems from the legend of how they were slain, repurposing it for themselves. I've always thought it kinda weird that Medusa rides the beast that erupted from her body after she was killed. They do have precedence for these sorts of NPs, even if they are a bit strange.

    I love you man and love these videos that focus more on lore and history. I would like to add a few observations on the things you said.
    With Benkei he was originally planned for Fate/Apocrypha. This original concept possessed three Noble Phantasms. One was the one we currently have and another was 'The Eighth Implement' which allowed Benkei to take the arms of an enemy and wield them temporarily as a nod to his legend of taking the 99 swords. I do however love the idea of the Hitachibo NP you came up with. I feel if we ever get Benkei as a major story character he should do something along those lines.
    Ozymandias while being a name linked heavily with the Ozymandias Poem is not actually from that poem. It is more likely that the author and their audience of the poem was more likely to know that name as opposed to Ramses II as Ozymandias is the greek for the name and the author was a westerner and thus used the more famous western name. Fate likely uses the name Ozymandias as the poem has(sadly) become more famous than Ramses II. Much in the same vane Avicebron is called as such because the pseudonym Avicebron is more famous than his actual name Solomon ibn Gabirol as that was the name he used when publishing the Font Vivae.
    I will however admit something along the lines of the Ozymandias poem being so famous that it causes Ramses to have a NP where he reduces all the victories and accomplishments of others to dust while also doing the same for him and sacrificing himself would be awesome.
    Imagine if Ozy's master got taken out during the story and they both formed a heavy bond and Ozy sacrfices himself to save them. Also imagine how Ozymandias would feel about such an ability. It would be like how Vlad III views Legend of Dracula, a man who was the greatest among the pharaohs, a man who accomplished great feats to marvel at, having his greatest myth be a sonnet on how his great accomplishments crumble to dust and are meaningless. It would make the act of using it to save another such a more significant event as its very existence insults just how great his works were.
    I think Mephistopholes is a severely under utilized and under respected character in Fate. The actual fundamental function of the Noble Phantasm Ticking Bomb is that of a curse being placed on a target. This curse pretends to place bombs upon the battlefield that cause others to become wary of them but this paranoia caused in others allows an opening for the curse to bury itself into the opponent's circuits and have the bombs detonate from within the target. Mephistopholes is a sick person who draws attention to the curse being activated to get a reaction of despair out of the target. It essentially turns paranoia and a fear of downfall into the opponents undoing as they ultimately lose due to their own attempts to come out on top. Unfortunately FGO doesn't show this nuance well or explains it so it doesn't appear as anything special.
    I really love Mephistopholes but he never feels like he is done justice. He is an interesting concept with the actual Mephistopholes being a perfect homunculus created by Faust and then turning on him and rampaging as a deal making beast to leave his mark on history as defiance to the fact that as a homunculus his life is unnaturally short. This results in him gaining a legend as a demon that offers you everything you ever wanted then having you despair at your inevitable failure. He has created such a significant legend and impact that he is forever altered in the throne of heros as a demon of contracts. Becoming the Mephistopholes of legend through the Innocent Monster skill. I like this concept but I never feel like he is portrayed very well or even given a chance to show how interesting his abilities could be. He has a power that is an ultimate curse that denies the hopes of all humanity and causes whatever anyone does to fail absolutely as if fortune has abandoned them. Yet you never see him discussed or used well during the story.
    At least he has a special place in the Goeatia fight so maybe his bad luck skill is being used well as it causes Goeatia to fail all his buffs and sink into despair.
    I just want to conclude by saying thank you Klidge for your videos. You bring a different kind of perspective and knowledge to the FGO community that I really appreciate. Thank you.

    Shuten’s NP being the wine that killed her makes sense simply because she’s in the assassin class. Shuten fighting back after being beheaded in the legend is represented through her having battle continuation. If Shuten was conceptualised in the Berserker class, then she would have been written with another NP.

    An interesting thing to note as well is that Chaldea literally can't handle the full power of some of these noble phantasms. Like Nero's NP in FGO is just a special attack she has in Extra. Our favorite kaiju is also stunted, unable to access her infinite growth ability except in a temporary reality marble that just lets her grow big for one single head pat. So some servants literally can't access their strongest NPs, like Heracles's God Hand not making him immune to the thing that killed him last.

    Honestly, I think it'd be cool if Moriarty got his Treatise on the Binomial Theorem as an NP. It's basically what got him recognized as a genius and how he earned his position as a math professor in the first place.

    A few notes:
    - Ozymandias isn't just the name of the poem, Ozymandias is the greek name for Ramesses II (think how Alexander the great is known as Iskandar in Fate). I'm pretty certain that they went all-in on the poem just because it's by far the most directly quotable thing you can find from or relating to Ramesses II. I'd argue that rather than focus the actual NP effects on the poem's plot, which was largely not tied to him in specific, they did better to just have him be Ramesses II.
    - Jason summoning what are effectively shadow servants for his NP is *extremely* similar to what Raikou can do, that being she summons her Four Heavenly Kings as something akin to shadow servants to fight with her (but they didn't want to design any except Kintoki prematurely so they just made them look like Raikou copies in FGO). So in that sense Jason actually gets a one-up on her and in my mind a pass based on precedent. The golden fleece, to me, makes more sense being a skill as-is anyway, given that it was more of a macguffin to the story than a feat in itself (as someone else pointed out).
    - Liangyu absolutely deserves more love. Although the thing about the infrastructure seems more akin to a skill than an NP, no?
    - The odd thing about Shuten in Fate is that, for some reason, they decided to swap her and Ibaraki's roles on each other. They made Ibaraki the leader of Mt. Ooe's oni and Shuten was just chilling out with her. I don't know why that is.
    - In lore terms, Mephy's NP is a little more relevant to the story; he can plant bombs inside of people without even touching them, which then count down and kaboom. The actual gameplay is a bit scuffed but to be fair he was released long before kit gimmicks became the norm.
    - Moriarty's NP is almost entirely fate nonsense, in my opinion, and I love it for that. Subarashi. Max der freischütz is rolling in his grave.
    - In my personal opinion I think Koyo's NP is fitting for a berserker (think Penth) and your suggestion would be more akin to, say, a Caster, as it seems to imply more situational awareness and reasoning than your average berserker should handle. That's just an opinion though.
    Great video overall though, you make good points especially about Benkei.

    Actually, Argon Coin can be used for more than just minor healing. Due to an anecdote of the Golden Fleece and the deagon that guarded it, the Argon Coin can be used to summon the Colchis Dragon. However, both Jason and Medea (as a Caster at least) lack the knowledge and skill to make use of the Argon Coin that way, so it gets downgraded to a mere Skill instead of a NP.

    As a big fan of Ozy, both irl and in Fate here are some thoughts:
    1. Ozymandias is just his Greek name, like Iskandar is Alexander's Eastern name.
    2. While they do invoke the poem, it seems that the interpretation of the famous line is different, which ties into my 3rd point.
    3. Ramesses II was a builder king. He is most famous for building any number of buildings, statues, temples, etc and making damn sure that you know who had them built. This is really well-communicated thematically in that, like Gilgamesh, his power comes through possessions, rather than the man himself, the key distinction being between a collector and a builder.
    4. In this sense, his quoting Shelley (in FGO specifically) isn't about "look how time ravages even the mightiest of monuments" and is more "No matter how powerful you are or how great your works, they pale in comparison to mine".
    5. I agree about the pyramid dropping thing. Not sure why they didn't use another visual depiction here.

    Argo Coin is a noble phantasm - its just that neither Medea nor Jason can use it properly in the classes they are summoned.
    Argo Coin was supposed to be able to summon a dragon. There was a whole plot line in original fate for that, where the dragon was supposed to be the final boss but Nasu decided on Gilgamesh instead.

His second and third skills are supposed to reflect his version of magecraft for being a shaman. And his NP is having alot going on. He summons the Apache Wolf that stole Tabacco from The Sun, which summons the The Sun by extention to pretty much scorch the landscape while the Wolf buffs everyone.
    We could talk about Semiramis and the fact that she didn't build the hanging gardens of Babylon and the she was an excellent tactician, but doesn't have any skills pertaining that. Its about her poison and her magecraft.
    We could talk about Beowulf and the fact he acts more Jojo than his actual story counterpart. He's a bad amalgamation of both his times during his greatest feats and he can't benefit from it.

    Bradamante's doesn't make any sense. She's a Lancer, and in lore she has a lance that is capable of unseating any rider. But in FGO, her primary weapon and NP is a wizard's shield. Why didn't they just give her the lance?

    • @BloodrealmX
      @BloodrealmX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That lance is Trap of Argalia, the same one Astolfo Rider has (it's literally the same object; he lent it to her), and it's weak enough that it's not even represented in FGO for him besides him being shown to attack using it.
      I do, however, agree with your assessment that giving her the magic blinding shield doesn't make sense considering she doesn't use it. Ruggiero is the one who uses the shield, not her. The problem is that I'm not sure what you _would_ give her as a Noble Phantasm besides Trap of Argalia. She's portrayed as a very competent knight, but no single object or deed stands out enough to me. The closest I can think of would be perhaps a conceptualization of the lineage of heroes and leaders that Melissa shows to her that she and Ruggiero will produce in the future.

    Basically a curse of lycanthropy but for Oni.
    It would show off how 'she is the leader of the oni' while also making her class more logical. She doesn't assassinate so much as her underlings doing the work.
    It doesn't make her weaker but it would make her more of the Yakuza leader type of character.

    Honestly I think the Golden Fleece is being treated much like the Hide of the Calydonyan Boar Atalante uses to Metamorph into her Berserker form. It's treated like a skill because FGO didn't always allow for completely different NP animations on a single Servant, but that's changing. But it's like GoB and AoB being used as mere attack animations for both Gil and Enki respectively.
    But you bring up a very valid point.
    I would like to see the Golden Fleece being used just as Atalante uses it in Apocrypha/FGO or Hypolita and Alcedes uses it in Strange Fake.
    But I bet, if asked, they'll say Medea and Jason aren't using the Golden Fleece at its full potential in their current Spirit Origins. Meaning we need them to be on a different Class that allows that legend to fully manifest. That said, for story reasons they could possibly be seen using the Golden Fleece for some random shiz in cutscenes or in anime...

    Actually the coffin gun is Moriaty's, not the Spirit of Der Freischütz. It's specifically listed in some extraneous materials as 'Super-Excessively Armed Multipurpose Coffin - Reichenbach'. What Moriarty got from Der Freischütz is actually the magic bullets that will never miss their mark. The coffin itself is apparently tied to Moriarty's original death at Reichenbach Falls, although why it manifests as a giant Swiss Army knife of guns and weaponry is debatable. My guess is that it's an exaggeration of Moriarty's original air rifle, coupled with various tools and gadgets Moriarty was familiar with in his life. Alternatively, I choose to believe Moriarty planned to have some kind of insurance policy stowed away in his coffin, like a stash of weapons and what-have-you, and that Reichenbach is somehow a crystalization of the plans he had regarding the inevitability of his own death, culminating with The Dynamics Of An Asteroid.

    Honestly Fate has a lot of weird shenanigans that help (sometimes) to explain some of their decisions when it comes to characters... But one thing that is never explained well enough is the whole matter of the many "sides of the world" like the reverse side of the world, wherever Avalon is, and everything else relating to that, so could you please clarify that to some of us who got no clue about it?

    • @SvafaBlackhand

      And when explaining the Textures, be sure to include at least some mention/explanation on the anchors (Rhongomyniad and Riyu Jingu Bang) and their role. I believe it has been mentioned that a few others exist, but none have been named. Although, it wouldn't surprise me if the Tower of Avalon was one of the anchors, and Merlin's staff was its shadow, similar to the lance Rhongomyniad.

    • @akiranara6404
      @akiranara6404 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Klidge is more of a history buff than a Fate lore buff, so I'll cover this.
      The "sides of the world" are the Textures. It's explained in Garden of Avalon that the Textures are like layers of fabric wrapping around the Earth, and that Rhongomyniad acts as a "pin" to hold our layer in place so it doesn't go flying off. By extension, the same is true for Romulus' nation-building spear, Sun Wukong's staff, and the Voyager One space probe, all of which are established to serve the same purpose as Rhongomyniad. So far, we know of two: the human Texture, which is what we live on; and the Reverse Side, which is where all the gods and creatures of myth went after the beginning of the Age of Man. Avalon is a specific subset of the Reverse Side with particular conditions for entry, not a full Texture in its own right.
      For the record, Nasu tends to be fairly vague in his writing, so if things aren't clearly explained, that's probably why. For him, the rules exist to enhance the story, by creating limitations. And as a minor clarification, the concept of Textures was invented for the Tsukihime remake, and retroactively applied to the Reverse Side, hence the contradictory terminology.

    • @SvafaBlackhand
      @SvafaBlackhand 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@akiranara6404 I forgot about Romulus' spear being confirmed/mentioned as one. I hadn't realized Voyager One was as well.
      If I remember right, the Atlantis Lost Belt's ocean is also a Texture, but it's specific to that Lost Belt and doesn't exist in proper human history.

    • @MajorLawliet
      @MajorLawliet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The simple explanation is "textures". Reality in the world of fate is malleable, malleable enough that different layers of it exist. In the far past where Gods reigned, the very earth was divided between the many pantheons that existed. On one side you could have the norse lands, with all it's 9 realms, while on the other you could have the greek, with both tartarus and mount olympus.
      The Reverse Side is simply that "other" layer where all the magical things went as Humans started to dominate, and the Human Order started giving shape to the laws of physics as we know it. As this new texture was more or less anathema to magical stuff because humans now advanced with knowledge, which is in opposition to Mystery, their time was essentially over and they kinda retreated away. Most of them at least, some were still left over here and there. Like all the wild shit Arthoria and her Knights killed around Britan.

    Characters like cu should have an extra Noble Phantasm like vlad from Dracula he should be able to warp spasm
    Edit: ozy np should be the lightbulb that was super powerful and took a triple command seal arash and excalibur to overcome like honestly ozy was the gil of his story where servants had to unite to beat him

      Warp Spasm would just be what happens to him in Berserker. Berserker isn't innately tied to Dracula's NP, is just the only class you could summon him in with that NP on and maybe not die, not to mention it fits him perfectly as the horrid monster he didn't want to be, completely different from the dignified and elegant ruler he much prefers being remembered as.

    If this video was brought to us by your sleep schedule, where does Raid Shadow Legends fit into the agenda?
    Joking aside, I think NPs got an overhaul to how they work purely to make gameplay choices.

    Klidge, I have a question.
    As a person relatively new to FGO, what events would you say are worth going back and reading if you’ve missed them while they were going? Like one of my faves is Kougetsukan Inn, (my first event) but if you weren’t into FGO back then you probably wouldn’t have read it, and there are people who upload entire events onto TH-cam.

    some of these are good ideas but feel kinda gamebreaking or simply out of the powerbalance for low rarity servants

    i am gonna be honest the servant np makes the least sense is hessian lobo and his np Frieren Scharfrichter mainly do to the lack of evidence it puts into the stories as the only link at all is the hessian beheading people i the tale of the sleepy hollow i would a least change the name to midnight hunt in the sleepy hollow ( also with 3 tales with ridiculous feats of avoiding capture or being part phantom why doesnt he have an evade skill)

    • @MajorLawliet
      @MajorLawliet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, he's a cobbled together phantom made of figures that were considered woefully incapable of becoming heroic spirits on their own. Things would be obviously twisted.

      @@MajorLawliet I mean your right but it just like to see the np show I mix of all three characters rather than just the hessian( especially since the logo is the best boi)

    why does scathach doesn't have gate of sky?

    • @MageOfLuck
      @MageOfLuck 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      She does it’s just that in FGO gameplay it isn’t possible for a servant to have 2 np’s. This is also an excuse to use it on another servant using her body, and retaining her skills which would be Scathach-Skadi. (In the fifth singularity they actually show that she can use both when she brings Li Shuwen to a place where no one can interfere with their fight). I’m pretty sure Fate/Extella might be the game that has Scathach playable with both np’s, however, it hasn’t really been translated yet…

      Oni are shapeshifters and can appear as either gender, though Shuten doesn't have any stories as a female to my knowledge. Ibaraki, on the other hand does; both shapeshifting into a beautiful woman when Watanabe cut off their arm, and sometimes as the lover of Shuten.

      Funny little detail beyond what Svafa mentioned, it is actually very common for some figures, Shuten among them, to be very often represented in plays and such using _female_ actors instead of males. The same happens at times with Sanzang, because of being attributed with otherworldly beauty and all that fun stuff.
