Hi Janna, I love watching your videos. I've been a knitter for the past 60 years and you have taught me new methods of doing things. I also love your lifestyle, being a country girl myself. I wanted to let you know that I just finished the toe-up socks you showed on this video. I carried the same knitted configuration up the back of the sock as on the bottom of the heal, across ALL the back stitches (34 in my case). I really like the looks and the added comfort.
I needed to tell you that you are a wonderful teacher. I also agree with your views and technique concerning where the heel wear usually occurs in the sock. Thank you Jane, for your very clear instructional videos.
Hello from the east coast of Canada. I’m thankful that I found your videos and have just knitted my first sock. It has mistakes but I will keep on trying to create a pair. My plan is to knit socks for my children and grandsons for Christmas.
Always wanted to learn how to do heel flap and gusset for toe up socks. It never occurred to me to reinforce the heel, I'm going to do this on all of my socks, now. Thank you for all of the effort that you put into doing these videos. Truly grateful. And thank you for sharing your farm. Beautiful
We used to have a small 58acre farm. The Irish breed reminds me of the Reg . Milking short horns we had., less the short horns. Very pretty. I like you sharing your farm life experiences with your subscribers. 💗👍👍🙏👍
Besides the very helpful and time-consuming tutorial, I really love that the cat is just there!!! Lol. Having had 4 at one time, I totally get and appreciate just “going with” their varying personalities. 🤭😂😂✌🏻💛
Thanks for the great view you have a nice farm/ranch. Lol cat, mouser, to help inside and dog, wrangler, to help outside. I’m enjoying your channel very much. Thanks 💞😊
This is the first video (watched 10+ videos) that made me understand how heel flap and gusset is actually constructed. Lot of other videos are either good at explaining but not visualising or the other way around. Thank you for being good at both!
I am knew to your podcast, and I don't normally comment, but I feel so inspired by your teaching I felt I had to say something..you are the best, your voice is so relaxing and I find that I understand what you are saying, and the concept. I am totally new to sock knitting but the way you explain it, I now feel confident that I can do this. I could go on but I'll stop. Thank you so much.
Animals make life (intersting) and seeing your farm with the calves brings back memories when I was young (40 now) helping dad before school in the barn and around. (Before the farm specialized in potatoes and grain.) I really enjoy your videos of the farm and of course the tutorials. Thank you for all the time and energy you put in. Keep up the awesome work and take care.
I enjoy your live tutorials. Making the Scatterby Socks, second time making socks, for a friends birthday. Will be making my first pair of mittens with you next. Thank you very much, Jana.
This is the best toe up two at a time tutorial! Thank you for such a great walk thru of the heel flap. I have narrow heels, so understanding the construction is really helpful.
Jana, I really enjoy your channel! I love seeing your ranch and especially the little bull calf! I appreciate that you are so matter-of-fact and down to earth when explaining and showing knitting.
Thanks so much for your patience and wonderful video and knitting techniques. looking forward to starting the gusset...because I am totally lost there!!!
We had two blue healers ... Babe and Bo !!! Just loved them !!! I love your videos ... I am going to watch the 4th one now. I have had the opportunity to watch all of them at once. After Part 4, I am going to start my socks and go through the vids again. It's nice to see them all at once.
Thank you so much for your excellent detailed explanation of each step of the heel flap and turn. I am trying to do a toe up sock for the first time with a heel flap and this was invaluable. You have explained every problem I faced in figuring how to do a heel flap on a toe up. As an experiment, I have already knit one sock cuff down with the heel flap but am not sure whether the yarn I have left will suffice if I did the second sock cuff down - an incomplete foot would mean ripping out the first sock and starting all over again with my normal TAAT toe up socks! Hopefully, the second sock toe up won't be noticeably different. You're a great teacher, among your other talents!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been Knitting toe up socks using the Fleegle Heel but have wanted to also do a heel like yours. I just couldn't put it all together in my head. You did it! Thank you, thank you. Congratulations on the clf, he is beautiful. Loving your tours through the pasture.
It's not too common for me to laugh whilst watching a knitting video, but I have to say, your cats cracked me up :-) Thanks for keeping them around to "help" you. Lovely farm. Lovely work. Great tutorial.
I’ve been trying to figure out how you invert heel flap and gusset fore toe up, so glad that you showed all how to do it. This gives me much hope that I can get this done. Thanks Jana
I just recently learned how to knit sock the old fashion way, I'm assuming,. I'm really enjoying this new adventure! So far I've knitted 7 pairs so far and I can see where I failed when picking up the stitches after finishing the heel flap. I only picked up one and not the whole slip stitch!! Oh dear! It's pretty much self - learning on my part with a book. Now i Know!!
Thank you. Love these videos! I can’t believe I’m knitting socks!! I just finished this video, but I now see my pattern is reversed... my stocking stitch (of my heel turn) is on the inside of my socks...?? What should I do?
New to your channel, am loving it. Have you ever done gloves? I would love to see a video on knitting fingered gloves in sock yarn. I like small portable projects and things that I will use.
Just love your videos and your method of teaching. I am learning a lot and hope to put it to good use. I usually knit toe up with the Fleegle heel. I think the flap and gusset add an interesting perspective to the sock pattern. I do have some difficulty envisioning this heel on toe up socks. Is there a video showing the completion of this pattern? Thank you for sharing.
There will be next week Friday 5/18. In the meantime though, you can get an idea how the heel flap and gusset look by checking this earlier video. Its a simple ribbing pattern, but the heel construction is the same. th-cam.com/video/VwWYIrYql68/w-d-xo.html
Love, love your teaching. I finally got the courage to knit socks. My first one on the my needles, and loving every single moment of it. I am at the heel flap portion. Do you knit the last stitch through the back loop on the purl side of flap or just carry on with purling? Thank you for the wonderful videos.
Hi Jana, Thanks for this tutorial. I think I’ll be making all my sock heels this way from now on! 1 question if I might, when turning the heel, on that 1st row, you say I can knit a couple more (besides the 2 you mention) past the center sts to get a more rounded heel, do I need to adjust the # of sts I purl back to compensate? Would I purl back 7 instead of the 5 you mention here? Thanks & I Hope that makes sense!
Yes, if you knit past the center more stitches than the pattern indicates, you'd purl back a corresponding amount so that the stitches left on either side at the same number. Does that make sense?
Purl Together yes, thank you. I had to fiddle with the numbers a bit, but I got it worked out. I started with 32 sts, went 4 beyond the center, ended up with 9 sts left over on the needle unworked, then had the purl 9 sts in the middle to get the other end to have 9 sts left over, also. I never realized knitting had so much math involved, lol! 😜
making work socks and have done the toes in Red, the foot in Grey, and I'm almost to the 3" from the length of the foot. Where do I start to put the contrasting color for the start of the heel? Do I start when I'm 3" from the length of foot?
I like to use the contrasting color when I begin the heel flap. Then return to the main color after the heel turn, using the main color to pick up the stitches along the sides of the gusset.
@@PurlTogether I know I am late to the party on this. I am working on these socks and I did the heel in a contrast color and now I'm dead in the water. Tried picking up the gusset with the contrast color and everything is all mixed up. Wrong yarn color in wrong places. I am going to try this. Thank you. Thought I would have to take out my contrast heel but after reading this maybe not!!
May not be available but do you have a website where printed directions are as well? My weird way of learning. Make myself anxious if I don't know where im going.
@@PurlTogether ok thanks! I was just confused because the picture has different heels. I was trying to see how often I'd be going back and forth on the underside purling every other row.

Hello, I have knitted a bunch of toe up socks with the magic loop co, and then increasing every other row. I never liked the trapezoid toe shapes. I once came across a video that showed how to do a rounded toe. I can’t fid the video again. Was it one of yours? Do you have a pattern for a rounded toe?
The reason is that it adds reinforcement to the bottom of the heel. It creates a thicker fabric when we do the sl1, k1, pattern and wears better. I usually get holes in the bottom of my socks, not the back. You also have the option to continue the sl1, k1 pattern up the back of the heel if you wish.

I was wondering how hard or easy it would be to do the s1k1 all along the bottom of the sock
It's not difficult at all to knit the slip stitch pattern on the heel flap, which is located on the bottom of the sole. And it makes a squishy sole!

It is the most recent, but not the last. I hope to have part 4 uploaded this evening.
How to heel flap on sock
Still confused that the heel flap is on the bottom and not the back of the heel.
Yes... its on the bottom, the construction allows for the gusset to work in the same way as it does when the flap is at the back. Try it!
I’m glad I read the reply about the heel flap, I almost tore my sock out. What is the reason for the heel flap being on the bottom of the heel?
