We raised IPP on our homestead this season and it is the best tasting pork I’ve ever had! We are actually getting a breeding pair next season because we liked them so much. Keep up the good work- good videos!

Nice! I ended up doing the same thing. Just picked my breeders up a few weeks back. The IPP breeding stock is crazy expensive though due to them being such a new breed. I did a double take when I saw how much people were asking for them.

@@alexherman1803 I hear ya! It seemed like everyone was buying up pigs and broiler chickens and anything else they could get their hands on a few months back. Hope you and your family had an amazing Christmas!

@@alexherman1803 How much did they weigh when you butchered them?

@@greenghost6416 Around #230. Not huge but I was happy with it given my feed bill was near zero.

While they are called pastured pigs that doesn’t mean they live off pasture alone any more than a human would! Cows, horses, sheep can live off pasture because that is their natural food although most are still supplemented with grains. But a pig is an omnivore, it’s digestive system is not the same as a grass eating animal. They didn’t grow when you didn’t give them grain because they weren’t getting sufficient nutrients. By 7 months old they should have been between 250-300 pounds.

You're right about everything except for the weight. This is not a large breed like commercial hogs. It is a mid size breed and they don't reach that size in seven months. Idaho Pasture Pigs are part Kunekune which is a very small breed.

    Isn't that growth very slow?

Yea its very slow compared to commercial breeds on high protein grain. These guys are only getting spent brewers' grain though (which is low protein) and grass. I didn't buy any feed for them, it all came free so growth rate wasn't a huge concern. What you give up in growth rate you get back in taste though. I just butchered these pigs a few weeks ago and the pork is amazing. Completely different from something store bought.
