Pressing Pear Cider

  • I recently picked up a better cider press as I was very underwhelmed by my crappy chinese made amazon press. This is an antique Hocking Valley press that has been modified to run off of an electric drill. Hocking Valley Manufacturing existed from 1869-1950 and was based in Ohio. My guess is that this press is more than 100 years old based on the types of screws used in its construction. I'm sure it has quite a story to tell. The Previous owners had it in the family for 50 years!
I am using pears as I received a several thousand pounds of them for free. Apples are preferable or apples mixed with pears but this cider still turned out great. After pressing pears a few times I have learned that the key is to process them while they are still very firm. If allowed to soften, once they've gone through the chipper they turn to mush and cannot be pressed effectively.
My son and I drink a lot of juice and this cider press has allowed me to stop buying juice at the store. With the ridiculous grocery prices and this lovely record inflation, I am more motivated than ever to wean myself off of the grocery store as much as possible.

Enjoying your videos, adding pups at the end is a great touch!
