United States Marines Reveal How The Feel About The Corps

This is a portion of a one hour television documentary I made in 1986 embedded with the Marines during military exercises in North Norway. Staying in that tent with them was mighty rough with the extremely low temperatures and the simple wood (and smokey) heater that they placed at the center of the tent each night. I had and have deep respect for these young men and the jobs they did and how beautifully they treated one another and me and my crew. It gave me great respect for the Marine Corps and for them as individual Americans. #marines #military #basictraining

The 1st time I was called "Marine." When Platoon 304 graduated from PI, our DIs didn't call us Marines; in fact, they told us we had a long way to go before we became Marines. However, they did stop calling us maggots & shitbirds. We were taken on buses to the Camp LeJeune rifle range, where we pulled targets for the Eastern Division Rifle Matches for a week. We were allowed to roll up the sleeves of our utility jackets while we worked.
When we were relieved & marched to chow in the afternoon, no one told us to roll our sleeves back down, & it was a warm day, so I left mine up. Our detail was dismissed so that we could straggle to the mess hall. I was half-way to it when I heard someone yelling, "Hey, Marine!" a number of times. I wondered who the person was, and whose attention he was trying to get, so I stopped, turned, and saw a sergeant looking at me, & he was angry. "Yes, you! I'm talking to you! Roll those goddamned sleeves down!"
So OK, now I'm a Marine.

I was in Platoon 376 at PI. Same here with our DI's not calling us Marines even after we graduated. Today after the Crucible they get their Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and are congratulated on becoming United States Marines. I had more pride going to boot camp that after boot camp ended.

Marines are highly trained and motivated warriors who are usually the first line in a conflict. They are our best and are part of the Department of the Navy, as are the SEALs. @@NotShowingOff I joined the Marine Corps when I was 17 years old and had six more months left in high school. I showed up at Parris Island on 2Jul1962, two weeks after I graduated high school. At that time we had a obligatory military service, any male on his 18th birthday had to go to the post office and sign up for the
Selective Service. My father was what was known as a China Service Marine. I joined because I felt that the Marine Corps was where I needed to go, there was absolutely no future for me staying home, no possibility for a higher education, no training for any kind of decent job, no transportation even if I found a decent job. I joined with the intention to meet my military obligation in the manner I wished to meet it, not by my name coming up in a lottery. I fortunately aq

    • @macmcatee611
      @macmcatee611 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hit the wrong button, sorry. I fortunately acquired a few valuable skills, thanks to the Marine Corps. The day I signed up, about five days after my 17th birthday, it was my intention to go, do my service, and then get on with life. I had no desire to be a Marine Corps lifer. I didn't want the two year option because that limited what the Marine Corps would allow you to do. I joined for four years active duty, you automatically got 6 years military obligation, no matter what options you took. The other two years was called, inactive reserve. By joining 6 months before I graduated high school I had already satisfied 25% of the inactive obligation before I even went to boot camp. I was in the right place at the right time and had the right attitude. During boot camp I was selected for my first two years of active service to go to the Marine Barracks, Washington, DC to join the Ceremonial Guard Company. I spent one year there in a ceremonial platoon and the second year in what was at the time known as the Navy Yard Gate Guard. There is one gate to the Washington Navy Yard that has had Marines standing guard on it since the day the Yard was built, something like 1800 or so. It's the oldest Marine guard post that there is and I considered it quite an honor to be there. When my two years was up in Washington I was sent to the 10th Marine Artillery Battalion at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. When I reported in to the First Sargent he asked me if I would like to work for him in the administrative staff. I said sure, he signed me up for Marine Corps typing school. That has served me well for many, many years. I actually got jobs after I left the Marines just because I could type 80 WPM on a manual typewriter. After a year with the 10th Marines, the Company Captain, called me into his office and said that he had a request for an administrative clerk to be sent to the Marine Corps Recruit Training Regiment back at Parris Island, did I want to go. I said sure and got orders to report there. So I spent my last year on active duty there. I was fortunate enough to stay out of trouble and get promoted to Sargent E5 about six months before my time was up. This was at a time that the Marine Corps had many Corporals with 20 years service. I was lucky to have worked for some mighty fine Marines. During my service I participated in many military funerals, parades and special events in Washington. I was in President Kennedy's funeral. I was at Andrews Air Force Base when Kennedy's body came in from Dallas, saw the new President Johnson and Mrs. Kennedy coming down the gangway at the front of Air Force One and the Presidents casket coming out the back. I was part of the military 21 gun salute fired over the grave of General Douglas MacArthur. I participated in a military welcoming ceremony for Emperor Haile Selassie, he was known as the "Lion of the Desert", I can tell you when you looked into his eyes you were seeing a great man. I did from about 3 feet away from him. I was part of the security at Blair House in Washington, the Presidents Guest house. I spent many days and nights being the first line of security for guest of the President while they were sleeping. In certain situations I was a fully armed guard for the President and his family, one situation had me behind a loaded and locked M60 machine gun less than 200 yards from where the President and family slept. Too many events to continue here. I went on two deployments to the Caribbean and was part of a number of traditional full scale Marine beach landing assaults. I was part of the unit that went to the Dominican Republic when there was a civil war breaking out down there. We made that landing into an unknown hot situation with no ammunition for our weapons. Don't know what bone head made that decision to this day. I served my four years when and where the Commandant of the Marine Corps sent me. I was ready to take what skills I built in the Marines and get on with my life, and I did. I left active duty on 13Oct1966.

Still...military service itself is still a very valuable tool for maturing young people. Teaching them to work as a team, and be able to follow instructions. Sadly though, young people today have no way to know if a declared war is actually in defense of their country, or in defense of someone's pocketbook. LOL, I've been out of the military for a long, long time now, and I'm still learning--it's easier for us though, "hindsight is always 20/20".

    Mr. Hoffman:
    Sir,
Thank you so very much, for creating this documentary tribute, to our United States Marine Corps. I remember watching it, when it first came out on PBS. It truly inspired me, into wanting to enlist, into the Corps.
Over the years, I've often wondered, as to whatever happened, to each and every one of those Marines, as I was later informed, that sadly, many of them, may have been killed, during the surprise attack bombings, on the Marine Corps Barracks, in Beirut, Lebanon, back in 1983. I pray that I'm wrong about such news.
In closing, I hope that you will be able, to catch up on all of 1st platoon's stories, and videotape it, record it, for historical posterity.
    Thank you and GOD bless.
    Sincerely yours,
    Mr. John David McJunkin
P.S. May you always find enjoyment, in the passions of your life, and may your passion, make your life, more enjoyable, for you.

We went to Norway, Denmark, then to Germany, and to London for liberty. Semper Fi! Edit: I just read the description, and it was in 86! Wow!! Maybe you also convoyed with us? David Hoffman Thank you sir. Did you also ride on the USS Inchon? Those Marines didn’t look familiar, but I suppose they were an attachment from Camp Lejeune. I heard one of them say that he’d been gone for 8 months, but that operation lasted roughly 2-3 months. I know when we got back on ship in Kiel Germany, our berthing on the Inchon was not a place many could tolerate, as the smell of being in the field with no showers was quite a smell, lol. What was historically interesting about our crossing the Atlantic, we passed right over a Russian submarine that had a mission to launch a missile in the USA. There is a documentary on that, which shows the officers of that submarine talking about that mission. Well, enjoyed your sharing of this video sir, and thanks again! Semper Fidelis

I’m a Marine, served with 1/1 A Co. 1st Plt 2006-2010 and my dad, the real Master Chief as opposed to the Halo video game character, was a doc (Corpsman) and instructor in Cold Weather Medicine at the Mountain Warefare Training Center for awhile. I noticed a bit of cold weather medicine (Armpit Warming) the doc was performing in the video. If you have more footage of Corpsman, and/or Marines commenting on their docs, you outta share it with the world. I’d love to be able to share it with my dad and I’ve always felt as I’m sure most Marines do that “Devil Docs” get all of the same work but none of the glorification that we get as Marines and they really should be highlighted and known about by more Americans.
