Not gonna lie. I don't think I've ever washed my parts before paint app. I did it for the first time on my mg Barbados and I genuinely can't tell the difference
Ricardo Bermudez if you are gonna paint a Bandai kit then it's pretty unnecessary. However, if you are painting Garage Kits or other mecha models like FA from kotobukiya then you should wash it.
Tip for the japanese text located within the instructions: You can use Google Translate on your mobile phone along with the camera mode which allows you to translate directions on the fly. It works pretty well!
Jon Doe ost of the reallly old ones are kind of boring like the original gumpla (gundam) series but the new ones ( at least the ones i watch) like gundam unicorm, and gundam blood orphans.
Best Gunpla beginner's guide I've seen so far. With your great depth of Gunpla information, good tips, detailed explanations, and japanese manual translations this has made my first step into Gunpla MUCH less intimidating. Keep up the good work!
Just bought my first gunpla today not knowing much besides it's Char's Zaku II. Ended up getting a Master Grade 1/100 and all my gunpla/gundam friends on twitter were screaming "WHY DID YOU GET A MASTER GRADE FOR YOUR FIRST KIT" and I was like what did I get myself into.
Slepy Isa i got a Perfect grade for my first, i didnt touch it for 3 months. Only when i had 2 dozens of gundams and bought all the useful tools while starting out did i make the PG.
Slepy Isa My first(and only so far) was MG Sandrock EW. Just had to take my time. Maybe doing countless car models before that helped too. How’d yours come out?
My first kit was a HG Gundam Gusion Rebake, which was a gift from a friend, despite me not really knowing what Gundam was. Then i watched Mobile Suit Gundam, and started buying some HG and MG kits for 0079
My first gunpla was the RG ZGMF-X10A Freedom from SEED, my dad worked part time at a hobby shop and got it for me. It then sparked the raging inferno that can never be quenched. I have only made 3 RG, 1 HG, 1 SD, and 3 MG kits so far. I'm currently about to start my first MG Ver. Ka. The RX-93 V Gundam. I love all the Gundam stories. It got me to watch Seed then Seed Destiny. And before I knew it, I've watched almost all of the anime series. Just keep on keeping on.
Me and my son just finished building Master Grade epyon that I bought from Japan in 2015. It was a great bonding experience but we did make a lot of mistakes. So glad for these tutorials. We will be building strike freedom next with the help of these tutorials
If planning on painting, I would not wash the parts only until the last minute prior to applying the first layer of primer. If you wash your parts first, they'll end up dirty again with dust from sanding, fingerprints, etc. Good series btw ;)
Thanks bro! And thanks for that tip. Makes sense. Like I said, I honestly don't do it very often, but it's a good habit to get in to. So how do you wash all the parts then? Totally disassemble everything? Or wash them in built sections? You wash even the tiny little pieces as well?
How I do it, I assemble, then take everything apart and dump it in ultrasonic cleaner to wash in water and dish soap (or use a toothbrush, but this is more work), then rinse in clean water, then dump in strainer and wait a day or two so everything is dry. Now that the parts are free of dust, debris and oils, they go on clips and ready for paint. For tiny parts, I place them inside a cheap tea leaf infuser ball first so I don't loose them.
I have worked in thermoplastics before and to manufacture the kits they have to spray mold release on the mold to keep it from sticking to the mold. Some companies have used coatings in to achieve this but most do not because it is VERY expensive and you still need to spray them down, just less often. I doubt Bandai is using a coating on their molds because it increases the time it takes to get a mold running, costs a ton, and it needs to be reapplied often resulting in work stoppages. all of this means huge amounts of revenue lost. If they were making heart valves (Last Place I saw it used) I would understand but I doubt they would go through the trouble. Be happy though, at least they are using Water based releases, i have seen petrol and Paraffin based stuff that takes chemicals to take off used on Toddler toys in Eastern Europe and China. Give that to your kid after it had to soak for an hour in 1-1-1 Trichlorethane, that stuff is banned from importation in most countries but in China they clean Fabrics and Toy parts with before shipping them. Causes cancer in 100% of lab mice btw.
Yeah, I thought about that, but I didn't have any on hand and I figured they are essentially the same idea as sticks ^^ I'll be using something closer to blocks in a future video later I think, so I'll show them at that time.
Just bought several NG suits. Can’t wait to get started. Your videos are AWEOSME! Thank you for breaking everything down so well and showing us what you do and what to look for.
Really useful stuff! Thank you so much for sharing! I just bought my very first Gundam kit.....a HG XXX-G00W0 Wing Gundam Zero. Looking forward to my first trip to Japan next March (2021). I imagine I will become an addict and what better way to satisfy my future hunger for more Gunpla than a trip to Tokyo! Many thanks and once again, thank you for taking time to explain this process for us beginners!
Thanks! I love animes and mechas, but i really bad at building things. Your videos helped me to get in touch with gunpla and so i bought my first three kit yesterday. I cant even wait to get my FG, HG, RG Kits...
I’ve build 2 gunplas, one tamiya mini 4wd and some cheap third party kits . But the thing I like about these is the building process and that feeling when you snap a part out from the runners and that feeling of accomplishment. My first proper tools were wire cutters, box cutters and some super glue as well as cotton buds.
Glad I came across this video. I was trying to figure out what all the differences were. I kinda figured the basic information about them but didn't know all the little extra things. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to make excellent vids! I'm binge watching them and look forward to watching the rest. Recently picked up this hobby and built two kits without consulting the internet- mistakes were made! Oh well, still had fun... Looking forward to my next kits now that I'm armed with more knowledge.
Great Video! Honestly, as far as ''How to'' videos are concerned, this is probably the best I've seen being gunpla or your typical car or Military modeling how to videos. I'm exited to see what else you have in store in this series!
Thanks for this video! I am getting ready to build my first kit after many years of staring at kits online and wishing I could do it. I am diving in! I bought a BB Senshi to warm up on and then a HG IBO Barbatos to build after that. This was really helpful, and I feel pretty confident in starting after watching this. I'll definitely be watching the rest of your tutorial videos.
So happy I've stumbled upon this, Gonna start building Gunpla as a side hobby and my first two are gonna be a No Grade Launcher Strike and a HG Gusion Rebake, I plan on building the Rebake after the Launcher Strike cause I figured the NG would be good practice.
This is the most useful tutorial i ever watched. Overall I think you have the best gunpla channel on youtube and I really hope you would keep uploading videos. Will have to watch the painting tutorial over and over...I really need to improve on my painting skills lol.
Yeah, I know this is a "pretty basic" video, but the thing is I'm just bought my first gunpla and this has been really really helpful. Can't wait to build it in a few days, thanks for all the knowledge! You got a new subscriber here :)
Hi Zaku, thank you for this video. It's very in-depth for a newbie like me. I restarted this Hobby after 18 years and I never knew there was so much to learn in it. Your video is 5 years old but it's still useful!
Already built some kits but haven't tried some customization on them. So I'm really looking forwards to finish this series and try out some of your techniques. Good share!
Some advice if you want to get the general idea of what you're in for, try the Star Wars Bandai Kits. Much simpler but you get the practice of cutting and cleaning up the parts & getting a feel of snapping parts together instead of using glue.
I do minor painting to my models. Probably not necessary to wash my runners, but I do anyways. Trying to get back into Gunpla after many years. When I was younger I bought my first kit which was HG Gundam Double X. I was only about 13 at the time and just removed the pieces without nippers. I bought a few others when I was around the same age and did the same. I was pretty foolish with them when i was younger and broke a few which I regret. After over a decade, I still have some of those older kits which I am trying to clean up a bit. I recently bought quite a few supplies and Gundams. Ranging from about 6 high grades, 3 real grades, and 5 master grades. Haven't built them all yet. I am trying to take my time and to be very careful. I plan on buying some more after these are built. Watching your videos has really helped and showed me the error of my ways from when I was younger. Also I have noticed how the quality of Gunpla has gotten a lot better over the years. Thanks a lot bro for these videos.
One of the best tutorials I've seen for beginner gunpla builders and detailed and informed, also I think you forgotten Super Deformed Grade of Gunpla, SD.
One note on the Bandai logo - You may see some kits with a light blue Bandai logo. These are not bootlegs! Since early last year, Bandai started using the blue logo for their Spirits division, which is in charge of items aimed at the adult or collector market, such as model kits. I believe this includes reissues of older kits, as I recall seeing some old-looking kits with the blue logo. In general, if you see a kit with a blue Bandai logo, you know it was made in 2018 or later.
Side note: If you prefer using Builder Parts or IBO MS Option Parts to customize your suits, go for HG because the peg are only usable onto recent HG kits (e.g. HG Revive UC, 00, Builder, IBO, etc.) and if you want to stabilize the foil stickers, use your fingernail to push it onto the surface, or use modeling glues. Should they wear off, use Gundam Marker or Mr Color / Tamiya ink to add back the color.
I had no idea you were suppose to wash the runners. Very informative series Zach and looking forward to more . As a novice I'm sure this will help me improve my oob builds immensely. Thanks!
Check out Jim's comments below (Gunpla Fixation), as he informed me that washing just out of the box is not really necessary as the parts will get dirty again in the building process, so it's better to wash just before painting! I'll amend that in a future video. But hope you'll be able to pick up some helpful tips throughout the series!
Good on you for doing this mate, it maybe time consuming but sharing knowledge is a cool and generous thing to do. I never wash kits or miniatures when I paint them, yeah bad habit I know. Oh and, get a plug for that sink man! lol
I'm glad that I took the time to watch your reviews on the mobile suit models. I have been wanting to get into this for a while now, And I hope to get one of my very own soon. Hopefully unicorn or banshee.
Its really not that hard. If you want to give it a try there are now some Star Wars models that use the same principle and are very cheap. I recently built a star destroyer and millennium falcon for my first builds like this. Granted they are much smaller but it will give a good idea what to expect. They are also really cheap (I got both for about $15) so if you find its not for you it doesn't feel like you wasted a lot of money.
When I started building plastic model kits, I use the best tool that god gave me, my HANDO. It was challenging but eventually it’s fun if the kits is not some bad ones.
An idea for you when you're washing your runners. I use a strainer for the very small runners. Then I don't have to worry about them falling down in the drain.
Hi ZakuAurelius, looking forward to these sets of videos having just started the hobby myself, I had built a few gundam model kits and ran into issues with my model basically disintegrating. turns out massive problem I had while painting was the poly caps, my advice would be to leave these well away from the model till after you have painted it. Also get loads of crocodile clips and barbecue skewers. That was some advice I got from someone at a model show. I tend to use acrylic paint when airbrushing but I would like to know what other people use if they read this or other tips :)
Well I think there's a good mix of people using different types of paint, but I believe lacquer would be the most popular. I won't be covering any airbrushing at this time, but there should be some more helpful stuff for you along the way!
Although i am not into GUNPLA, i do find this video very informative especially the portion where you had explained the various symbols or icons found in the beginning of the instruction booklet. I actually just ordered a BANDAI MACROSS VF-1S. Haven't receive it yet but i'm sure the symbols or icons on the instruction booklet is similar to the ones you explained in this video since it's another BANDAI product. Thanks!
this technique may be pretty obvious, but I like to add a patina to the paint on the older grunt suits. I do this by using paint that's a couple shades darker than the original, and using sandpaper to remove paint until it looks like a machine that's been sitting for decades. I did this with a master grade zaku 2, and i think it came out pretty well.
Bunsen just ordered my first kit this video was very helpful as an absolute beginner to this! I went with a cheap HG Build Strike Gundam to get started ill let you know how it goes
I'm just about to start my first one and I have literally 0 idea but I want to take a punt because... Well I've always wanted to! This video was SUPER helpful.
I’ve done hard tube water cooling PC builds-I hope it takes the same amount of patience hahaha About to start my first ever kit: PG astray red frame kai let’s do this 🔥 🔥🔥
@@tonymk-ii2614 i broke the v fin, forgot to put in an extra layer on the chest unit and i screwed up most of the decals... IT WAS AWESOME! working MG barbatos, going to paint it and errthang
I like your style for this basic building tutorial which I recommend to my friends here, and I like the jazz music you used while washing the runners. :)
I can't tell you how important this is to a noob like me. I feel much less intimidated & more confident about this hobby. This is a great, great service you have provided for us. Bravo, my good man!
Yay the series has arrived! Definitely looking forward to more videos of this series. Is there a specific timeline you plan on releasing these videos or is it just going to be a ASAP type thing? Thanks!
I will probably stick to a schedule of putting out one or two videos between each tutorial video. So that means one or two tutorial videos per week til we're done with the series!
ZakuAurelius I was also wondering if you plan on talking about how to keep your tools clean and free from rust. Mainly the side-cutters and modelling knives. Cheers.
This is awesome tutorial for beginners like me :) all though I build gunpla before not in a proper way that's why the first one will be on repair mode :D I learn a lot on this Channel Thank you so much ZakuAurelius God bless
**EDIT**
Disregard the part about washing runners, it’s not necessary. However, you should wash parts before painting! 👍
So it's not really mandatory if you are not going to paint right?
Not gonna lie. I don't think I've ever washed my parts before paint app. I did it for the first time on my mg Barbados and I genuinely can't tell the difference
Ricardo Bermudez if you are gonna paint a Bandai kit then it's pretty unnecessary. However, if you are painting Garage Kits or other mecha models like FA from kotobukiya then you should wash it.
I actually liked that part of the vid hahah it was fun when you said you lost the sink plug, cute part #noHomo
Any advice for a person that wants to build a PG kit for the 1st time?
Tip for the japanese text located within the instructions: You can use Google Translate on your mobile phone along with the camera mode which allows you to translate directions on the fly. It works pretty well!
yep I do the same thing
I used to build models as a small child, and this is making me want to do this kind of stuff again.
I haven't even watched the Gundam anime series and am not even that interested in that but I think the Gundam models look really cool.
Jon Doe ost of the reallly old ones are kind of boring like the original gumpla (gundam) series but the new ones ( at least the ones i watch) like gundam unicorm, and gundam blood orphans.
Same here man I just think these are cool
Start with Gundam: Origin
I just play the games
Just think of the anime as backstory for the models. You can learn as little or as much about it as you want, whenever you want.

You don’t need to clean plastic before priming, though.
I built my first Zaku without tools or reading! Got immediately hooked, now I bought some tools and another kit and am slowly building a ZEONIC FRONT.
In addition to sanding paper/sticks, I also use sanding blocks which cover a lot of surface area and is helpful when sanding flat surfaces
Yeah, I thought about that, but I didn't have any on hand and I figured they are essentially the same idea as sticks ^^ I'll be using something closer to blocks in a future video later I think, so I'll show them at that time.

I think these are some of the best tutorials I have seen. Wish I had them back last year when I started.
i just ordered my first kit yesterday and I'm soooo excited. Thanks for your video it's making me more exciting and I think it will be a great help!
I just started building gunpla and this series, especially this video, has been helping me a lot. Thank you very much and I love your channel man!

Glad I came across this video. I was trying to figure out what all the differences were. I kinda figured the basic information about them but didn't know all the little extra things. Thanks!
A very well rounded and great intro to the hobby :)
Thanks much Simon! If I left anything out or you have some good ideas for me, let me know!
It's crazy that this was from before you ever airbrushed
Now you're a beast
This is a very good introduction to the very basic of Gundam model kit building.
Awesome! Thanks!

I’m back again lol. Built one and then stopped for a couple years, time to get into it. Thanks for the great information Zaku
Welcome back!
The cleaning of the runners was probably my favorite part of this video. :-)
+David Guevara It's really only necessary to wash before painting, but it's still good practice.
Awesome tutorial! Very in depth and loved how you broke things down like the symbols and your methods of placing the runners.
Thanks dude!
I'm just starting with a kit a bought well over 10 years ago but never put together. Looking forward to getting started with your help!
Thanks for making this video series...

You’re welcome!
A very good informational video. I just bought a RG unicorn (my first) today and this video really help me understand on how to build a gunpla

new to gunpla, your vids are very helpful. cheers
Same. Just getting into it myself. Super helpful video.
Basic, but still fun to watch. Looking forward to the next part!

Well I think there's a good mix of people using different types of paint, but I believe lacquer would be the most popular. I won't be covering any airbrushing at this time, but there should be some more helpful stuff for you along the way!
Very informative, and very helpful.
Thanks!
You're welcome!
+ZakuAurelius do you know how to use tamiya putty basic type i dont understand how to use it.
Even though I'm a (somewhat) experienced builder, it's still good to learn different techniques
Thanks for the tips! I'm starting my first Gunpla Build. It's the RG Gundam Astray.
this technique may be pretty obvious, but I like to add a patina to the paint on the older grunt suits. I do this by using paint that's a couple shades darker than the original, and using sandpaper to remove paint until it looks like a machine that's been sitting for decades. I did this with a master grade zaku 2, and i think it came out pretty well.
Great Video. Well paced and to the point.
One of my favorite videos!
You helped inspire me and many others I'm sure.

Alright, looking forward to them.
ZakuAurelius I was also wondering if you plan on talking about how to keep your tools clean and free from rust. Mainly the side-cutters and modelling knives. Cheers.
