My budget was $20! I bought 2 HG kits from Amazon that were on sale for $10 each. Instead of buying supplies I'm using household items: Mustache scissors instead of nippers, pocket knife instead of exacto knife, nail file instead of sanding paper and copic markers for painting (yeah, those aren't in every house but I had them).
I've never done gunpla before and been watching your videos for about a week now and seen about 50 of your videos. Can't wait til I get some money for a full setup and this video just made it a whole lot easier for me! I was introduced to gunpla from a friend who's also an amateur so I've been watching you and some other builders and by far you're the best one I've watched. Very professional, great quality and your knowledge is so useful. Keep up the great work and thank you for these awesome videos!
Andrew Mah Well thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I'm certainly not the best on TH-cam when it come to Gunpla skills, though! I would encourage you to check out some other channels as well, other guys who have more technical knowledge and experience than I do!
+ZakuAurelius I have a few questions. first will acrylic paint need thinner? second will a file work in place of sand paper and also if I'm doing a black custom can I just use black primer or do I also need too paint it black? and finally what color primer should I use for purple paint?
Alex Dalton Acrylic paint usually just uses water as a thinner. A file will work, but it will usually leave filing marks on the plastic, it's too harsh, you should use sandpaper as well. You could I suppose only use black primer, but I'd highly recommend using black paint as well, it will be nicer and the color more rich. Under purple paint~ white for bright purple, grey for neutral, black for dark purple.
ZakuAurelius okay that's good I was planning to go with a dark purple. I'll go with primer and paint for the black and I found some 80 grit sandpaper. I have one more question though do I have to do the spray cans outside?
Im always watching your video, Im your fan. Thank you for feeding my eyes because i cant afford gunpla im only watching you. Thank you. Hope someday lord give me a chance to build my own gunpla.
OK I live in the UK so the kit I got got most of my tool from a £1 store ($1store equivalent) Cutters I use side nail cutters with a spring Managed to get 2 hobby knives Nail files to replace the sandpaper and files Glue ( recommended teast on a runner just to see if thare is a reaction) Pro marker for Pannal lines And if you are going to paint it I recommend you use nail varnish is good just thin it out
Thank you for this tutorials. I love mechas and gunpla is very fun, but I have no idea of how apply primer or how properly paint my plastic models. Your tutorials are helping me a lot!
Really looking forward to this series Zack. I'll have to check Justin's channel as well to see what he comes up with. this was a great idea between you too especially with the price difference you to have due to your location. Even if some of us have been doing this hobby for awhile, you can always learn something new, like the cardboard rig you did. that is a great idea instead of buying that florist foam to do the same thing.
THIS IS AMAZING, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am in college, and so do not have a lot of money, especially after buying the model kits themselves. on the other hand. I looked for the top coat on amazon here in the US, and it is over $30 O.o. Also, When i try and find those enamel paints, those numbers you have all come up as Acryllic.
William B for topcoats you can go to Walmart and such stores or even autoshop stores like pepboys and such and get spray cans by Krylon. they're about 4.00 of course being in the military overseas I don't pay taxes but it's still cheaper than buying "modeling paints" for a lot more and getting less. Just make sure the paints are compatible. enamels with enamels. or use enamels and then use acrylics. If you use it in reverse, the enamels might eat right thru the acrylics and ruin your paint job.
very nice video after your series is complete you should upload part 1-4 as a full video. your videos are very helpful and I enjoy following you thanks
Very cool! It's not often you see Converge in a real world context; you either love them or have never heard of them. Keep up the great videos! I've only recently discovered Gunpla (saw it on Reddit a few days ago) but I'm already keen to give a model a try myself.
Oh thank God!You can do this way cheaper as a first year high schooler in the Philippines (pretty early high school) and I just realized I bought a really expensive kit for a HG P1099 but some were just around P800 I heard. :(
That's a great kit! ^^ There are some great groups and people there in the Philippines. Feel free to send me a message on my Facebook page if you have any more questions or need any help!
you can use the hobby blades for over 30 kits even more just get a wet and dry stone thats 1 stone you can buy at a hobby shop and just sharpen the blade every once in a while just sharpen it when it doesnt feel as sharp as you want it to
Budi kurniawan if you want really cheap stuff for panel lining. get one of those black charcoal pencils they use in art class. then use a knife and scrape so you have charcoal dust, add water to it and a really small drop of washing up liquid. then youll have a really good panel wash that will not stain plastic and will wipe away when dry.
i got a similar marker for 1$ or less and hobby knife for 7-10$ :D the problem for me is the primer and paint it's hard to find here and if there is one it's already sold :(
Hey, that's neat that you are a modeler living in Korea. I'm an American modeler living in Japan. I imagine that you can easily get most modeling supplies that I can. Do you have Gaia Notes paints in Korea?
I'm looking up the tamiya modeler's knife and noticed that there is a black one and a green one. Is there a difference? 74040 for the black and 89980 for the green I believe.
Like this concept, I might have to try it. $100 dollars can go a long way, or not very far depending on what you buy. I like the forward thinking, investing a bit more in the tools that can be used later. One question: Did you start with a kit in mind, or did you buy what was cheap? I ask, because you came in ten dollars under. I think it would be awesome if other members of the community posted similar videos, just to show, how much the hobby cost around the world. BTW, I need a titans test team shirt, any info?
fuzzyhawk down Justin and I talked about the idea before I went to Japan, so while I was there I picked up a few kits that I might fit the project. One of them was the HGUC Jagd Doga, but I ended up using that for the first set of 'tutorials' that i did. The TTT shirts aren't for sale, but you can get lots of other cool shirts here: childofmecha.storenvy.com/
You're lucky, I'm from Turkey. I'm paying double (Price of model + Shipping "as much as model price 1/4 of model price!"). If I want to buy more 500$ kits, I'm going to Japan by plane, shooping in Osaka, than going back to my country. :)
Cool series concept, but most countries paints etc in spraycan form are more expensive than an investment for an Airbrush and some paint.. also where to buy that aoz shirt!!!!
Question: I was wondering, I have a type of pen that (kinda) acts like a mini marker, I mean pressing down on paper hard makes a whole lot more ink come out, and its got a lot less ink over time. Can I use that pen for panel lining?
I know this is a old post but I would avoid ink for panel lining since ink is permanent and hard to fix mistakes unless you're painting. The lead of a pencil works great and if you can pick up a cheap set of pastel chalks are even better. Rub them on sand paper or a file to create dust then use that to get down into those crevasse areas. The pastels work great for weathering also. You just need to watch for fingerprints but you can dab them out with cloth and cotton swabs. After I'm happy with the look I'd raid my girlfriends/wives hairspray to lock the pastels in place.
any hobby shop in japan, even here, hobby lobby has a lot of fair priced Tamiya brand tools, amazon, and places like NYC 'image anime has everything, LA has some good places in the asian district but for suppplies Hobby lobby had me impressed. and what you can find there its online for sure "If you can, go Tamiya." -thingsnexttome
@@ZakuAurelius lol, yea I saw later where someone else asked and you answered. Either way great videos I really have learned a lot and enjoy them. Thanks for the response and keep on inspiring! (P.S. converge is so freaking good.)
Prices aren't that much more expensive here in the U.S. Most of the tools run about the same. Paints are slightly more expensive... I pay about $2.50 each for Tamiya pots at my LHS. The kit itself is a bit more expensive... the Kyrios FG runs about $12.50 (or so) via Amazon, but that does include shipping. Some items like the putty can be gotten cheaper for a better product... I myself prefer Bondo Spot and Glazing putty over any of the model putties, and for about $3 or so get a huge tube that should last a lifetime! LOL! At any rate should be able to get all of the items mentioned within the $100 budget here as well :-)
I go back and forth between Lego and Gunpla. Lego is more expensive by far. But you don't need the tools or paint or glue. And you can build Lego while watching TV.
Damn it :D I regret not buying alot of gunpla kits and supplies while i was living in Tokyo for 1,6 years. It's a pain in the ass to get the supplies i want to Sweden :P The Gunpla usually cost double the usual amount since they need to ship it from Japan xD So i'ts a much cheaper hobby when living in Japan.
can we also talk about the protections you need from gunpla building? one of my friends got Leukemia due to lack of protection from aerosol (tho not from gunpla biulding only)
This is a really great concept! But I think Justin is going to beat you ;-) You could have saved money on the enamel wash from Tamiya, since you already bought enamels. There is also the Tamiya enamel thinner, lighter fluid or white spirit ,to name a few options for thinning enamels, are much cheaper. Then there is the sand paper.... Why expensive, again, Tamiya? Don't you guys in Korea got a hardware store? This is also a good place to buy spray cans, instead of expensive Mr Hobby and uhmmm..... Tamiya. IMHO those little cans won't last one long. The problem is that when a product is designated as a "hobby" product, it's always expensive. Therefor one should search a bit for more or less the same product, but not in a "hobby store", alas :-( Nevertheless, great idea! Looking forward on how your kit and the next episodes turn out and what Justin comes up with
Tim Lemmens Sadly we don't really have the same kind of hardware stores you're thinking of. We do, but they don't usually carry to much in the way of DIY small-job anything. They are mostly for like actual construction workers. So for example, the only sand paper they would have would be replacement pieces for power sanders, etc. You're right about the can spray and enamel thinner though I suppose. Anyway, I still came out $10 under budget. But I'll talk about what you said in a future part of the series, thanks dude!
Oh, didn't know that... On the bright side, you do have some good access to "cheaper" hobby products since you're not that far away from Japan. You don't want to know what a spray can of Mr. Super Clear costs here :-( But you did a great job on staying under budget and got all the things one needs! In any case, you're welcome and thank you for taking your time to respond back to me. Good luck with your great concept!
look on e bay for a really cheap high grade kit, you wont feel bad if you wreck it, and the result can be great once you get some experience. For basics all you need are a few varying grades of sandpaper, some side cutters and a craft knife, don't worry about paints or top coats or anything like that. the kits are snap fit, so just carefully snip the parts from the runner following the instructions, and it'll come to you in no time
Mettaton If you really feel like you're not good, start with a no grade, an sd or a first grade that are usually way cheaper and easier. If you get the hang of it, buy a hg, even if it's a simple one. For starters, I recommend the Gyan, Guntank, GM, Hi Mock, Grimgerde or even the RX 78-2 for you to have a more versatile reference to expand your collection and skills. In your first few kits, you really don't need tools that much untill you get into customizaton such as painting and gradually go into making your own gunpla from scratch or making diorama. If you practice a lot and dedicate, as well as having great ideas, gunpla can be a really fun (and expensive) hobby. Hope I helped ^-^
Do you buy them in. Real store or a web shop if a webshop could you put a link up here because I live in holland and shipping from the uk is way cheaper then shipping from Japan or those Amazon guys who charge way to much for something
can i join your community? i build tons of Gundam model kits both custom and factory built and untouched. now that im back on the east coast i dont know anyone who builds them or even knows what gunpla or gundam is. i have all the techniques, weathering, panel lining many sanding stages, i mostly go with Tamiya, priiming, finishing, changing color schemes or just taking an origional color kit and detailing and weathering, enamels, hand painting and some air brushing for bigger pieces. anyway i bulit these things everyday and love the hell out of gunpla, my problem is i dont have friends who take part in this hobby or any kind of community to discuss accomplishments, techniques and just showing as well as seeing someone elses bad ass kits that we put a ton of work in and just want feed back and comments and the other way around. for some reason i cant subscribe to you guys or even add these videos to favorites with any of your gret videos. i always love learning new techniques or just talking Gundpla with other fans. if you guys cant maybe you or someone who sees this can point me in the direction of some sort of Gunpla enthused community. i know when i was in NYC or LA i could find these things and even hobby shops that carried gundam model kits but here in providence its all amazon based and i don't have any one who loves this stuf like i do to talk about the Gunpla world with. let me know if you can help please! i want to share info see other peoples work and show them my kits and really just discuss this spectacular hobby. "If you can, go Tamiya." -thingsnexttome
hey! I'm not sure, but I know there's people and a couple shops up around NYC and New Jersey. Not sure where exactly you're at or how far you are from there. I live in South Korea so I can't be much help~ sorry!
You have noticeably better word choices in these face cam videos, when compared to your reviews. Check it out, in your reviews your go to phrase is 'I think (insert rest)', whereas here your speech is much more dynamic. Wonder why.
I kinda find the gundam scene to be amature... Pieces already come coloured.. it would be really cool if they came without any kind of painture and we could paint them like ww2 airplanes and other modelism hobby stuff
Leonardo Serra regular hobby stuff like tamiya kits that you have to glue and paint are way different from gunpla. Gundam has a really unique building process including a lot of small parts and if you have experience with ww2 plane and tank kits, you can always do something crazy with gundam as well.
This is a pretty bad guide in my opinion. As a warhammer model maker and gundam enthusiast there are plenty cheaper alternatives to just about everything you named. for 100 bucks i could have tripled the amount of supplies.
Thanks for the input. That's why we did this as a collaboration with Justin, Simon, and I to show different perspectives. This is just one way. I never claimed that this is the absolute best way. But compared to other countries, here in Korea I can get Tamiya and Mr.Color stuff cheap so that's usually what I buy. I'm no expert in painting, just sharing my experiences.
Yea for example 2$ 91% alcohol works just as well as X20 and you can find it anywhere, you could also use a cheap exacto knife instead of the tamiya blade and glue and putty are completely unnecessary unless you break something
Lol , seems you have no idea what you doing. Low budget? Right. Do you have an idea what is a living a dream with no funds to make it true? You started to ,,storm'' adding a various supplies , correct me if i'm wrong , but that's not a low budget topic at all . I'm not going to summ all total you spent on tools and you get a better choice to get a desired kit with less work on him. I know what i'm saying , and back then i had no ,,hobby knife'' just scalpel , no fancy sprays , since they aren't available in my place (yes , i'm living under rock) nothing like hobby store , then again peoples with no work can't allow themself anything like that . But , it doesn't means you can't build decent looking kit . Something you can back and improve later in better times. Sorry for ,,rush'' , but Justin was much more closer to ,,low budget'' description , sadly no one understands stuggling of poor until taste same ,,cure''. I hope no one will.
Ok dude! Just my take on the topic. The point of Justin and I both doing the series was to provide two different strategies under the same budget. I have the luxury of cheap name-brand hobby supplies where I live. Don't blame me for that. You're more than welcome to move to Korea, too if you're really salty about the cost of supplies where you live. Obviously you can do a lot with very little (much less than what I demonstrated here). I'm well aware of the philosophy in the art world that the more restrictions you have on yourself the more creative you have to become. If you aren't interested in the series then don't watch it.
And why so personally? Sure i am bit pissed off , but i do this only because i am experienced lot of hell during my lifetime and lot to come , truth is - i did misjudjing here , not all regions are so shity in economical side of reality and this is just my personal opinion , not sure if world filled with low-proffiles like me , but it's sad , sad to the personal point of view . My apollogies , was too hyped. And i will continue to watching , since i consider your works as high level performance . I have a lot to learn and ,,age'' to catch up levels of yours and Justin's. Please keep up with good work,
My budget was $20!
I used to use just a nail clipper to build my gunpla :)
Mitchell Lim nail clippers work really well with gundam. expecially the ones that have a little sandstick that you can use as well ^-^
did you not need glue? i wouldn't know because i'm just starting out.
mystic arcanine nah man, they fit together, but have some super/model glue handy though because some parts are finicky
thanks jon

I use the same tools I used for 40k and warmahordes.
I also like vallejo paints and galeforce 9 tools as well as army painter brushes.
Damn, where did you get that awesome shirt?
TurboKlopper That shirt isn't for sale but you can get similar ones here: childofmecha.storenvy.com/
testors or tamya?
I got 2 MG for 50 bucks. Did I do good?
yeah, probably!
where's the part 2? still waiting
Alfi Stanley Lol, it's been less than a week bro, chill! Saturday it will be up~
Can I use a super glue
I go back and forth between Lego and Gunpla. Lego is more expensive by far. But you don't need the tools or paint or glue. And you can build Lego while watching TV.
Damn it :D I regret not buying alot of gunpla kits and supplies while i was living in Tokyo for 1,6 years. It's a pain in the ass to get the supplies i want to Sweden :P
The Gunpla usually cost double the usual amount since they need to ship it from Japan xD So i'ts a much cheaper hobby when living in Japan.
+MeldinX2 Yes living in Japan is heaven for a Gunpla modeler.
Whoa! Stuff there is really inexpensive, unlike here in the U.S.!
I use nail art "tools". hehe
can we also talk about the protections you need from gunpla building? one of my friends got Leukemia due to lack of protection from aerosol (tho not from gunpla biulding only)
Kyrios is my favorite gundam
Just thought I'd let you know
Djjon3 Well, thanks for letting me know!
This is a really great concept!
But I think Justin is going to beat you ;-)
You could have saved money on the enamel wash from Tamiya, since you already bought enamels.
Therefor one should search a bit for more or less the same product, but not in a "hobby store", alas :-(
Nevertheless, great idea!
Super Clear costs here :-(
But you did a great job on staying under budget and got all the things one needs!
In any case, you're welcome and thank you for taking your time to respond back to me.
Good luck with your great concept!
hay i want to start making gunpla but it looks so difficult and im not the best at hands on things anybody has any advice its appreciated
look on e bay for a really cheap high grade kit, you wont feel bad if you wreck it, and the result can be great once you get some experience.
Hope I helped ^-^
please don't do like me and start with an MG (my first kit was the sinanju :/)
ThatGuitarBand thanks so much Ill be look on the look out for said kits while I'm on amazon or go to my comic shop
Hey Dude Can Bootleg Or It Means Knock Off Gundam Can It Be Good To Buy Bootleg
*Reads Title* the budget is gonna be $100. * chokes*
Converge flag is dope. ;)
High grade kits are cheap as hell in the UK, they barely ever go over £10
Do you buy them in. Real store or a web shop if a webshop could you put a link up here because I live in holland and shipping from the uk is way cheaper then shipping from Japan or those Amazon guys who charge way to much for something
Lol where you been buying your kits. I think it's expensive in uk
TOYHUT
Get em on amazon, theyre 6-15 pounds each with free shipping, HG speaking
I don't like using sand paper I prefer nail files
ok.
delty sent me here
Why do you keep looking away from the camera? Whats over there?
Hawaiian pizza
So does your wife build Gunpla or other model kits?
Nope, not at all!
ZakuAurelius So what does she use the nippers for?
+ZylethX i think his wife help him.
+Mitsuru Matsuoka She doesn't.
+ZylethX You can't see it very clearly, but those aren't nippers, they are for cutting fingernail cuticles.
Won is Korean money, U live in Korea?
Yeah
skip the first 5 mins if youre in a rush
can i join your community? i build tons of Gundam model kits both custom and factory built and untouched. now that im back on the east coast i dont know anyone who builds them or even knows what gunpla or gundam is. i have all the techniques, weathering, panel lining many sanding stages, i mostly go with Tamiya, priiming, finishing, changing color schemes or just taking an origional color kit and detailing and weathering, enamels, hand painting and some air brushing for bigger pieces.
anyway i bulit these things everyday and love the hell out of gunpla, my problem is i dont have friends who take part in this hobby or any kind of community to discuss accomplishments, techniques and just showing as well as seeing someone elses bad ass kits that we put a ton of work in and just want feed back and comments and the other way around. for some reason i cant subscribe to you guys or even add these videos to favorites with any of your gret videos. i always love learning new techniques or just talking Gundpla with other fans.
if you guys cant maybe you or someone who sees this can point me in the direction of some sort of Gunpla enthused community. i know when i was in NYC or LA i could find these things and even hobby shops that carried gundam model kits but here in providence its all amazon based and i don't have any one who loves this stuf like i do to talk about the Gunpla world with. let me know if you can help please! i want to share info see other peoples work and show them my kits and really just discuss this spectacular hobby.
"If you can, go Tamiya."
-thingsnexttome
hey! I'm not sure, but I know there's people and a couple shops up around NYC and New Jersey. Not sure where exactly you're at or how far you are from there. I live in South Korea so I can't be much help~ sorry!
i build my first gunpla with my bare hand no tool and then i realised how fast and clean my build with a tool
You have noticeably better word choices in these face cam videos, when compared to your reviews. Check it out, in your reviews your go to phrase is 'I think (insert rest)', whereas here your speech is much more dynamic. Wonder why.
Is that Jane Doe behind him?
LOL that's the same nippers I use XD
kristian lam Baby Nippers! ;)
oh god I felt pain when he dropped those enamels so casually
wurt he lives in korea
i love you
haha yen lol sorry zaku if you are mad at me .
+Mitsuru Matsuoka I don't know what you're even talking about...
This video is mainly for English Hobbyist, in his case the US.
Doing gunpla is expensive here in malaysia. 10$ is like .. 40 here habhahahaha
I kinda find the gundam scene to be amature... Pieces already come coloured.. it would be really cool if they came without any kind of painture and we could paint them like ww2 airplanes and other modelism hobby stuff
Leonardo Serra You absolutely can do that if you want, and many people do.
You could also colored it with the colors you like and thus turn it into a custom gundam...kinda
Yea for example 2$ 91% alcohol works just as well as X20 and you can find it anywhere, you could also use a cheap exacto knife instead of the tamiya blade and glue and putty are completely unnecessary unless you break something
rubbing alc. does work but can wear down the plastic, your best bet is lighter fluid.
thingsnexttome
so far alcohol and water works great and it doesn't hurt my health like those Lighter FLuids and Mineral Spirits do. I use Acrylics
So..... is your wife Korean?
Well..... yes.
Lmao tamiya product = cheap?
I live in Korea = context
Bonus like for the Converge flag.
skip the bla bla shiiittt .... 5:05 you are welcome :)
Please keep up with good work,
dude, chill, get a job lol, learn to save money
