Liszt Consolation no 3 on top of Swiss mountain

  • The Consolations, also referred to by the title Six Pensées poétiques, depict an atmosphere of sweetness and serenity. These miniatures portray a Franz Liszt bathed in light, indulging his pen in the ecstasy of contemplation. The source of this set of pieces may have been Lamartine’s poem Une larme, ou Consolation, which contrasts the “pitiless earth” that leaves the poet inconsolable (“Fall, silent tears, On an earth without pity”) with the tenderness of the divine word which can be his only comfort (“It is felt that thy tender word With others cannot mix, O Lord! and that it comforts Only those who could not be comforted”). While this suggests that Liszt finds his “consolation” in the divine word, these works are also arguably a tribute to Chopin, who had died in 1849, the year before the final version of the six pieces appeared in print. Liszt and Chopin, though rivals, were also friends, as Liszt’s Vie de Chopin (1850) attests.

Beatrice, I so deeply appreciate this incredible performance. Thank you for reminding me of Liszt's immortal message of hope, faith, and transcendence through art. Your honesty, deep passion, and relentless insistence on quality are evident in every phrase.
I hear such sincerity in your playing! It is the touchstone of all true art. Nothing is kept private in great performances, it all comes through and its this nakedness alone that brings value into a work. If we feel too naked, only then are we are doing something right and here your soul is bare. As the great Robert Schumann once stated (essentially exactly what Samuel Taylor Coleridge famously wrote): what comes from the heart goes to the heart.
Great artistic wisdom always has a cost, there are no free passes. In fact, I don't have to ask you a word, I know how much you must have suffered in your private life to musically speak with so much spiritual weight. I hear it a mile away and though creative success is such a hard-won battle with far too few moments of satisfaction, I can say with this song you absolutely earned your view from the top of the mountain, literally.
This video restores my faith in humanity. Thank you for being such a beautiful artist and role model for us all. I only just discovered you and wish you and this channel nothing but immense success. Sending so many hugs and high-fives from NY (avec ma profonde admiration et mes plus hautes salutations!)

my ignorance. had no idea Liszt wrote like this. i only know the flashy stuff...ach, i remember those Swiss wildflowers from 1972 on both sides of the rode coming up to the pass which on the other side was eventually Lugano, as i recall. hitchiking. 17. when the world was new. what i love about your playing is the way you manage to convey the earthy and celestial at the same time. i just listened to this new-for-me piece by you and then played by Alicia de Larrocha, a great pianist, and then yours again, which i have listened to a few times already.... Her version is wonderful, too, heavenly, but not earthly. and your tempo is wonderfully meditative so one can hear the different voicings. after all it is marked Lento Placido....but a bunch of famous people play it rather quickly, like Horowitz.... thank you again!

Beatrice, this is SO beautiful. It brought tears to my old eyes. Old Franz was a demented soul seemingly with three hands and 18 fingers. But he is unequaled imo. To me the music is deceptively simple, it is the emotion and grace of the performer that makes it so difficult and thus, so beautiful. The setting and videography was outstanding. Thanks to you and all involved. Really fine gift we have been given to balance our current state of affairs.
