    The entire Battle Network Series, as a whole, is criminally underrated.
    Every game of the Battle Network series and Star Force series deserve a review.
    Still, I'm glad that the Battle Network series is finally getting it's just recognition, and I hope this will intrigue newcomers to enjoy the dynamic storylines and ever-progressing gameplay, as I did.

    • @mmm1217

      I beg to differ. MMBN 4 deserves a lot of things, most of them unkind, but not a review. To my mind, it's the only main game that marred an otherwise terrific series.

      @@mmm1217 Really? Battle Network 4 Blue Moon was my first in the series and is one of my favorite GBA games. I had no idea it had a bad rap.

    • @mmm1217
      @mmm1217 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe it's just me, but I don't think I'm alone in this. Part of the problem is that the content is spread across three different games (the first run and two NG+) to get all the unique opponents in the tournaments. The enemies are stronger (and replace older, weaker ones along with the chips they drop), and things like the locked/blue data and shop inventory are updated. If you're like me, and rush through to get all six Double Soul transformations, you miss out on a lot of content. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think some of the upgrades in the locked/blue data are just lost forever if you don't get them on the appropriate run. And, y'know, being forced to complete the game close to three times to get something as basic as all the Double Souls is padding to an extreme degree.

    I can't believe he crapped on the game and didn't even strategize with the code system and kepted on using shitty chips like cannon 1 when he was already in the later parts of the game. The reason he found it so difficult was because he was using everything in different codes so he was only using one chip every time the gauge filled. If he built his chip deck with a bunch of matching codes he could use a ton of chips every turn and not just tickling the boss with his pea shooter 90% of the time. And if he added the chip "FstGauge" there would almost be no down time. He would have known about this if he just done read and remembered the tutorial instead of just skipped it by mindlessly pressing A.

    17:10 "This truly is random" *gets a busting level of 2*
    I realize you went into this game relatively blind but in your review you state things that are outright wrong all throughout. I know we've been fans along time and ofcourse we know the mechanics of the games but it seems you didn't even try to figure it out. Misinformation is a plague and you should do your best to avoid spreading the plague.
    I hope you try battle network 2. If you do, save yourself some agony. Jack into everything, collect HP memory. You need it I think. Change your folder and drop weak chips like cannon as you get useful chips throughout. Choose 1 or 2 chip codes and stick to only them and asterisks for your folder. You'll hit your opponent with atleast 3 chips. Then by the time you do that, you can recycle your 'hand.' Chips are certainly not random drops and are based around your busting levels. Which goes up with fast deletion, multi deletion, and goes down with using your buster (which you used as your primary weapon) and getting hit. Later series add new customization and styles. Later on you can use other navis (bosses) souls after you beat them, which combines with lackluster chips to create devastating effects.
    I must tip my hat to you for your dedicated patience. I can't imagine playing through the end game bosses with beginner level chips and the buster. Must've been agony.

      I played the game blindly and it does have issues. One, The Internet itself is a god damn maze I mean Battle Network 4 wasn't perfect but at least that one didn't have internet that looked the damn same and had uniqueness on the Internet overworld. Secondly, fuck the blackout stage and screw that one boss where he had those two damn ball throwing assholes on his side that makes it almost impossible to dodge the damn bombs when going into WWW. The story I do not get his argument at all it can get a little flat or cheesy but its much better than 4's by a longshot. Gameplay felt more of a grind from all the fighting. It's a great game but I know this sounds weird but I preferred Battle Network 4 overall because advance the story you need good gameplay and this one lacked that aspect. I remember being frustrated at BattleNetwork but this game would have shamed Battle Network 4 on difficulty.

      @@nah4467 you also have to remember that this was the very first entry into the series where they had no idea what they were doing. It had a lot of issues but they were never enough to outshine the good. I have always found MMBN1 to have the worst network map in the series but they at the very least realized it was an issue and worked on it for later releases. Some of the bosses were far from perfect (Looking at you, Colorman) but with 19 bosses in the game, there's going to be some bad ones. Even the later games couldn't avoid this but there were much better mechanics by that point, making these fights more forgiving

    1) Chips are not gotten by random. its base on how well you complete the battle. this is seen by the busting level at the end with rank S as the highest.
    2) Program advances are not very strong?! 2XHero says hi...
    3) this game is hard? thats because you are not playing the game to its fullest. I can S rank bosses by 1 shoting them using 2Xhero and other powerful program advances. i had no issues with any of the bosses and i was only 13 when i played it.
    All in all, making a review when you only have so little hours invested in a game isn't fair. Just because you got everything, doesn't mean you truly understand the game.

And the changes to the battle mechanics in 2 and 3 make the games vastly better than the first. The first BN game has HEAVY first game syndrome. 2 and onward fix most of your complaints. More post game. More/better chips. Better chip drop rate (3 introduces the collect program to guarantee a chip drop). More of a reason to fight enemies because of the style system. Better program advances (Body Guard is your best friend). And more of a reward for completion (like hard mode or a new final boss).

    A lot of the issues you have with Battle Network 1 are fixed in later games(such as escaping battle). Also the program advances are definitely worth considering due to the damage you get from them (Guts Shoot, Double Hero, etc...) While the chip folder is RNG, you do at least want to build one with a singular chip code theme to try to maintain consistency and move fights along quicker.
    If your chip folder is basically an "alphabet soup" in terms of chip codes, expect to die a lot.

    If you want to experience the true greatness of the Battle Network series, you need to look to Battle Network 2.
    A brief summary of the series, if you will:
    Battle Network: The first one. It established the series, but compared to the later games is "meh".
    Battle Network 2: The first FUN one. This is where the series really took off. Introduced Style Changes.
    Battle Network 3: Great story, the best post-game, introduced the Standard/Mega/Giga chip classifications. Originally intended to be the final Battle Network game.
    Battle Network 4: DO NOT PLAY! Replaced Style changes with Soul Unisons. Introduces Dark Chips.
    Battle Network 5: Home to the very hit-or-miss Liberation Mission mechanic. Kind of "meh" all around but for different reasons than the first game, but uses the things introduced in BN4 better than BN4 did.
    Battle Network 6: The final game in the series, the story is easily the best in the series because of it, fun mechanics, great music, a good send-off for a criminally underrated series. Soul Unisons are now called Crosses.

    • @27klickslegend
      @27klickslegend 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I agree with all of that, except battle network 5 being meh, It might be because I loved liberation missions? they added a much needed challenge to the series, and allowed you to play as different navi's for the first time, and had rewards based on how fast you completed them.

    • @RogueOmega
      @RogueOmega 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The reason I called it "meh" all around is because while yes, I will admit that I too enjoyed the Liberation Missions, the Liberation Mission mechanic was something that you either liked or you didn't. And while, imo, the Liberation Missions were fun, outside of that I didn't really feel 5 was anything special. Also, 5 wasn't as challenging as 3. 5 is made even LESS challenging if you're playing Team Colonel, since in that version, Shadow Chaos is a thing.

    • @hiroprotagonest
      @hiroprotagonest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I loved Liberation Missions, I know there are people who disagree but I found them more engaging than the puzzles, but BN5 also has plenty of backtracking, that "defeat 100 samurai" rhythm game that can be really annoying for some people (though it's not a huge deal), and that goddamned logistics puzzle in the Japanese castle that ground my progress to a halt on my replay (I don't know how I ever beat it before). The JudgeTree puzzle in BN6 is basically a better version of that castle puzzle.
      Oh and I don't like that since I bought Team Protoman, the story is non-canon in significant ways. Also Colonel has since become my favorite Navi, I just wanted to learn more about Protoman at the time. :v
      5 also gives you the most broke-ass abilities in a series known for giving you broke-ass abilities. So... eh?

    • @endymallorn
      @endymallorn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I understand where you're coming from about BN4, but I have to admit that it was a good competitive game, and in many ways it helped improve the battle system with the introduction of the Dark Chips & Soul Unisons. It's not a good RPG, but it can be a fun game if you consider that the story exists to get you from one battle to the next. BN5 is just a very different game and I wish they'd done more with the Liberation mechanic and the ability to play as different navis.
      And, you've ignored Battle Chip Challenge, which I honestly enjoy for the unique spin on the battle system..

      tbh, the biggest thing I disliked is the change of the internet look. I mean, I get it, but I really enjoyed having the narrow paths representing what I assume to be cables between computers with having obvious boss fights.
      Navigation seemingly sucked(because the thin roads were confusing), which is why they changed it, but it allowed for so many customized versions of the internet that werent just a different background and a different color palette. I mean, I know they did it in the future games too, but not at the level of difference that was in BN1.

      my complaint isn't even that he isn't "good enough" it's that he asserts that the battles and chips (both collecting and drawing) are "completely rng", and "you can be one-shotted by bosses" which is patently false. Also overlooking the fact that there are 6 whole secret bosses to find, learn and beat because the final chip can't be used on anyone is absurd to me.

    • @DynaLight
      @DynaLight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I feel like a lot of the complaints he has about this games difficulty is mostly because he wasn't trying. Just judging from the scenes he showed in the video
      -He missed a lot of his Battle chip attacks
      -He would stand in the path of fire without even trying to dodge (most of the time hes just standing still firing his blaster)
      -He also never once used a "program advance" (combing chips) or talked about it. (edited. he did talk about it. My mistake.)
      I'm sure hes trying his best to get out as many videos as possible to replace the ones he'll be taking down so I don't really blame him for not trying too hard, but I'm just disappointed that a lot of his complaints could of been solved if he just took his time and played a bit better.
      Also I hate the fact that he said that he"has to lose the battle" as if implying there was no other way to get around taking damage. 13:40 the scene he showed when he said this showed two enemies (who killed him) using an attack that slowly go across the whole board. For the viewer who never played this game before, this may seem like an impossible to dodge attack (which would justify the point hes trying to make) but he showed that the attack can be dodge at 13:16.

    The sequels hugely improve on the games core concepts, I hope you think about playing them.
    Great review though, I think you were a bit harsh in some areas, but I chalk those up to different strokes for different folks, cause a few of the complaints you listed were positives for me when i was playing it... The Card combos were great to discover, and always felt powerful to me, the combat even with the RNG was great, and fighting and defeating Bass really was a reward for me. I don't really recall having much trouble with the combat even when I played them on release back when I was like 10 or 11...
    Also, for the chip drawing each battle, you can Pass and add more cards to your selection, making Combo cards easier to build as well as giving you a wider selection. You didn't mention this and a few of comments you had on the battle system made it sound like you weren't aware of this function or its purpose, like when you mentioned drawing 5 cards at the beginning and coming back to those 5 when the timer came back up...
    Anyway, yah, the Sequels are much better, and while I played and enjoyed every game in the series alongside my brother, I believe it was 2~3, with the "Forms" and such that were my favorite. I loved stuff like Bug form, where if you glitched out your upgrade board you could acquire a form that had a bunch of RNG effects like granting you temporary invulnerability, or reversing your controls lol... Seriously... play the sequels.

    First, your buster is a totally secondary weapon, the main weapon are the chips that you can select yourself in your own "deck". That's a important part of the game; making a good strategy with your chips and don't use the buster as a primary weapon. Also, you should try the BN 5 for the DS, in that game, you don't need a chip to escape, and the graphics are better and the soundtrack is way better with the addition of voice actors.
    Also, STOP COMPARING THIS GAME WITH POKEMON.

    Jirard, I feel like there's a lot of things kinda off with this review mostly due to a pile of small misunderstandings.
    Battle Network as a series is really fun single player, sure. But those crazy end game chips are for multiplayer. These games have solid VS play! As a completionist playing solo, yeah, they're not a great reward if the journey itself was a slog to you.
    As for GETTING chips... well, a lot of the games do make it kinda hard. But as you go in the series there's more ways to get them. Quests, quizzes, chip trading machines, trading with friends... plus I don't think you were aware... your battle ranking affects what you get in battle as well as what you kill last. At least in some of the games- can't say for all of them. So say you want the new chip from the enemy that gives you hammers. Well, you make sure you kill that last after doing a good job in a battle... you're very likely to have it.
    As for the plot and some of the games less desirable traits... well, yeah, the first game in the series is weaker than later entries. I don't even remember if the first one lets you change modes. Didn't seem like it did. Most Battle Network games let you gain abilities based on bosses and so on. Like a flamethrower buster and more power with fire chips. Plus they expanded the chip libraries and chip selection methods and added equipment systems.
    But yeah, people probably weren't recommending the very first Battle Network to you specifically when they said Battle Network. All that aside, Megaman Starforce was a great successor to this series as well and PLEASE also play a ZX game. The ZX games are great, it's a shame there's only two of them.

    Getting chips from enemies is not random, it's based on your performance. If you always get rank 2 (like your video shows) then you will almost always get trash instead of the chips you want.
    You should try the 4th or 5th game in the series though. Those two (4 technically) are quite good, and address many of the issues you had with this first entry in the series.

      Ok, now that I've finished watching the video, I have a few things I'd like to say. 1) If the footage of gameplay in this video is from you, then you are really lacking in strategy and timing with your battles. 2) I could be mistaken, but I believe you can also get the Bass chip from beating Bass, but I didn't see/hear you mention that. 3) Please, please, PLEASE do check out the sequels. If your only experience with the Battle Network series was the first game, then you are missing out. They add so much to the story and improve the battle system so much in subsequent games. Battle Network 3 and 5 were my favorites out of the bunch, but you really need to play all of them to get the full story.

    I love the Megaman Battle Network series. But I'm also very nostalgia blind for it. So to me your review was super honest and great to watch. The first few games do have their flaws but overall are masterpieces for the certain type of fan. A lot of the early problems are addressed and fixed in the future installments with some new ones popping up in their stead. But overall I know you'll the series as I and many others do. =] I look forward to watching any future/remake Megaman review video you post up. Keep up the good work Jirard and crew!

    This video is kind of bizarre. The focus being so much on the reward not having much use beyond all else and some weird points:
    1) Battlechip drops are not random. The higher busting rank, the higher chance of getting the chip. Getting as S basically guarantees it.
    2) Battles are not pointless. Money serves as the EXP system and is spent to upgrade your base stats.
    3) Base being the reward for 100% is good. Hyper focusing on the chip and not the fight is weird. Bass being in the game also teases the next title which was cool at the time.
    4) The chips can be used in VS mode which was and always has been an element of the series
    Battle Network 1 isn't the best in the series by any means but this video is really odd to me in the direction it went.

    You should look up one of the included manuals for the game, as it would probably have helped a LOT.
    Busting Level is important, as well as code-matching your chips in your folder and upgrading it overall. Would have made ur battles much easier, as well as dodging rather than tanking.
    BN1 is pretty garbo, the others are better in pretty much every way except 4, which is also kinda bad.
    You gotta treat the game as something separate from the sidescrolling MegaMans, as it is. It's a deck building game made for versus battles with an EXPANSIVE postgame (Battle Network 2 onward, with BN3 and BN6 being the most noteworthy pre Star Force)
    PLEASE don't give up on this series. They get so much better.

      Oh wow, see this is what I mean! You're always listening even if we don't even know it. Thanks for the awesome content Jirard, and good luck on your next game!
      I just wanted to point some things out if you are considering completing the rest of the series. Maybe this can help you decide whether or not it would be worth doing. There are 6 games to get through if you choose to. The Battle Network series gets deeper the further you play. This even gets to the point where the stories of 4 and 5 are physically connected and 5 continues 4's story. The later games only expand on the previous titles. And they get rid of the Escape Chip and actually give you a flee from battles button starting from either 2 or 3, I don't remember exactly. I believe it is 2 however.
      If you plan to complete them all then good luck... The later games can get a little insane with chips and content. And there are versions starting from Battle Network 3, which usually would be a problem on GBA, because you would need to connect the versions together to complete the chip library, however the Wii U rereleases realised this and have workarounds in the forms of giving you the ability to get all the chips. I'd stick to them to make the process a LOT easier.
      That being said, Battle Network 5 is a bit of an outlier. The versions of Battle Network 3 and 4 are very similar. They may have different chips and maybe a different secret boss, but nothing extraordinary. Battle Network 5's entire story is different dependant on the game, and all the bosses you fight and the abilities you get, are dependant on the version of the game. There is somewhat of a solution for this however. They made an enhanced DS port of 5 that contains both versions and allows you to have a save file of each game if you want to experience both teams Protoman and Colonel. Or you could just play them separately. Battle Network 6 is the same, both stories vary, but unfortunately if you want the whole experience you'd need both versions because that was all that was released.
      Sorry if I bombarded you with information, and if you have no plans to continue the Battle Network Series then I apologise again for the unnecessary info. To be honest I wouldn't blame you, because I have tried in vain to complete just one of these games with the ridiculous aftergame content the later entries are well-known for, and they can be daunting. Then again, you ARE The Completionist, and I'm not.
      Thanks again for the solid content Jirard and the team! You guys work so hard on your videos and it's inspiring.

      How So

    • @JEL625
      @JEL625 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      No. I just played it on the bn legacy collection and the criticisms still hold true.
      There are a lot of puzzles that are tedious guess work to pad time rather than actually being puzzles. Most notable examples are the passwords with no hints and the battery puzzles which grind the game to a halt while you still have to fight random battles.
      Thankfully it was the legacy collection so I had access to the max buster which cut out a LOT of chip grinding. I have played 3,4,5, and 6 back on the game and emulators and bn 1 really shows its age in the series. It's enjoyable at times but there's a lot of tedium and lack of good conveyance to the point you have to look up a guide or click every square foot of the game to locate what you're supposed to do.
      If anything bn 1 was a proof of concept as there is so much that later games added to the battle system and mechanics. For example there are less than 10 unique program advances in the game. Most combos only either give you a stock count of the weapon you used or start a timer for you to spam. Later entries really go deep into asking unique pa that impact the battle

    I recall that one NPC tells you about the sword-based program advance skill, which clues the player in on the concept of combining matching chip-types together in order from weakest to strongest in order to get new program advances. Sure, there are a lot of cool and powerful program advances that I'll never discover since I refuse to use guides, but the game does give you enough of a hint to get some use out of the system.

      Ehhhhhhh. As someone who played this game for the first time when the legacy collection came out, but STARTED with battle network 3 and on as a kid and adored them (still do) I can say for certain this is the WEAKEST game in the series. People often say 4 is the worst for some reason, they're all wrong, it's this one. This is the ONLY game where I said "Fuck it" and left, completing THE ENTIRE REST OF THE SERIES before finally going back and finishing the first.
      Battle Network as a series is top tier Megaman, absolutely.
      But THAT game in particular? Mmmmmmmmh, have you played it recently? It's INFURIATING in a lot of instances.

    If you liked Battle Network, you can try the Starforce series, which story sets 100 years later after Battle Network. In fact, the second game of the Starforce series was my first (and only) Megaman game

      Joao Vitor, he was rebelling against Chrono, obviously.
      Jokes aside, starforce wasn't bad. I liked the first one, and the second was ok (from what I remember. Been a while.) But the MMBN series is superior in my mind. Specifically 6 (gregar), and 3 (blue).

    Hey Jirard! I think it’s time to look at the rest of this series, as 3-6 and the star force trilogy are FANTASTIC games. Mechanics get fixed and fun things are added. They are criminally underrated and deserve a fresh look

    YES! YES! The first BN game was pretty rough, from what I hear. I've only played 5 and 6 (and the current version of the fanmade Chrono X), but MMBN6 is one of my favorite games of all time.

    A couple minor corrections. 1: It’s P E T, not pet, 2: ACDC is just a suburb of Dentech city, and 3: Protoman’s NetOp it named Chaud. The Eugene thing is because of a translation mess up since the localization team didn’t take the fact that in Japan uses the family name first. So they changed his family name “Ijuine” to Eugene.

      Hub Pie I might have agreed had it not been for 2 things. My nostalgia with 4 and the post game. BN4 was my first,though 2 was my favourite. 5 had these liberation missions,which I didn't like that much,6 was really good as well and then there's 3....I didn't really like 3 for some reason. And going back to 1,there's not much TO it...unless you know Japanese and play Operation Shooting Star. Also nice to see you here,Hub Pie

    The reward for having that best chip was that you could do one on one multiplayer in the GBA version if you had a friend that had the game.
    The multiplayer was actually a pretty important part of that game.

    As with everyone else saying it, I agree. You should continue the series. MMBN has a high skill cap. Chip strategy and deck building is really big for your playstyle. In MMBN2 there is a "style change" where you actually do evolve a new form based off your gameplay. I'm glad you had fun though!
