I disagree entirely. I enjoyed Devoe and his wife's flashbacks but Barry was so stupid. We know that Barry is right, but he has no logical reason to think that. He goes about investigating so stupidly. The episode treats him like the bad guy even though we know he is right and then at the end everyone apologizes to Barry even though he hasn't earned it.

This episode was great, best episode of the season by far. I like how fast the writers are moving with DeVoe, last year it took us 21 episodes to know anything about Savitar, now it's only taken 7 episodes to know basically everything about him, except why he's obsessed with Barry. DeVoe and his wife did a great job pretending at being innocent, I like that the assistant turned out to be his wife, knowing that she is more than just Clifford’s assistant helps give DeVoe more depth. Seeing them as a happily married couple was great and further develops DeVoe well.I loved the flashback with DeVoe and his wife talking to Harrison Wells. And I'm liking how they're already showcasing one of the ways DeVoe's intelligence can challenge Barry's speed, he outsmarted Barry, almost ruined his careers, and he formed a rift between Barry and his friends. The only problem I had was that this episode felt like it took a darker tone (there were still a few bits of comedy tho) like in Season 3, and the problem is that it worked, it was unlike he goofy, funny previous 6 episodes, why does it have to be funny or dark? Why can't it balance both? Anyways still loved the episode, DeVoe is starting be become a great villain.
It did not take 21 episodes to know Savitar. We didn't even know Savitar was involved until episode 6 or 7. His appearances as just an arm don't count.

I used to be one of those people who watched every single trailer/promo for everything, read interviews and behind the scenes stuff, etc. But over the past year or two, for no specific reason, I just haven't had the time or interest for that anymore, and I have to say my enjoyment of television has skyrocketed. Going into an episode and not being like "can't wait until that shot from the promo comes up" is so much better. (That happened to me when Zoom killed Henry, Barry screaming NO was in the promo so when the episode had like 5 minutes left and still hadn't shown that, I kinda guessed what was coming. Then not to mention LoT S02 trailer, which I'm glad I didn't get a chance to see.) I've been doing my best to avoid crossover spoilers but it can be difficult especially when certain individuals on Twitter have to be tweeting like "OMG SO EXCITED FOR ____ IN CROSSOVER!!!!1!!1!1!1." I'm lucky that I know very little beyond the premise, but have heard a few minor things that I wish I didn't know. TL;DR Blindwave method is best method (in my opinion) 😉
cody blaske It's a difference of opinion. Everyone is welcome to watch in whatever way they prefer, but for me personally having done it both ways I vastly prefer not knowing anything at all. As Aaron said, trailers and promos are all there to hype up an episode, but I'm already hyped enough that I'm going to be watching anyways. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this issue.

it's not his healing that he wants necessarily. it's the energy from the speedforce which barry has more of compared to wally. his brain is basically rerouting energy from the rest of his body to be more powerful. so if he has the energy from the speed force instead of the chair or what little energy is in his body, he could become the most powerful person ever.
The best episode of the season for me. I really like the husband and wife angle. I don't really see too many villainous couples in recent history that genuinely love each other. On the Barry theory thing they could have just watched him from a afar, but Barry went overboard and acted like a dog with a bone rather than thinking things out and went after him in a super obvious way.
I got a 325 ticket yesterday while trying to get my new plate and insurance! Car has been broke but just got it fixed. So I think the way that the Thinker gets his information is the same way Sherlock Holmes get's his information. Sherlock Holmes uses Holmesian or Abductive reasoning. A happens because of B. For example, The Flash returns the same time Barry Allen comes back from his sabbatical therefore Barry Allen is the Flash. It's not always an effective form of reasoning because it doesn't take into account that it could just be a coincidence or potentially other variables that could account for both character's existence but it's still relatively effective if he's able to confirm his deduction through other facts. Imagine a single deduction as a tree. That one deduction could have several different branches and even more branches can stem from those single branches with each stem representing a different outcome from believing the deduction and proceeding in a different way. Let's say we made a thought tree where we know The Flash is Barry Allen. A branch could be for what happens if we expose him, another branch could be for if we don't, and another could be for if we join him with each of those branches going out further and further as we make a selection. While a normal human can conceive maybe 1 or 2 entire thought trees (we're talking average like combining Einstein's Mind with Mine for example) the Thinker can conceive an entire thought forest. He can maintain deductions and every single possibility for nearly anything that he decides to think about. But as he gains information (more then likely by hacking security feeds and planting cameras around town) it starts narrowing down this forest into a little thought garden where certain events have narrowed what's possible. Things like the Speed Force and what not can be grasped if he's really intelligent (Professor Stein was able to figure it out so the Thinker probably already knew). From there he can then decide how he wants to proceed by cutting different possibilities out. It's possible the only reason he's decided to reveal himself now is because he's pruned the thought forest just enough to where he knows what all the outcomes are.

I think the way it works with Devoe is he's connected to the speed force in some way. Because he was struck by lightning and he considers himself the fastest mind. That way he can have all that info, like with Jack the Ripper. It's because he's pulling it from the speed force and it's knowledge.
Yes, yes, I am about 2,5 months late. But as a person with a (reasonably) extensive background in Computer Science, I can't help but respond to some things you said regardless. I know a thing or two about what's called "Data Mining". It's a broad term for anything which involves the deep analysis of data, and has intersections with nearly every subfield of Computer Science. When combining Data Mining with Big Data -- which is obviously Data Processing where the amount of data available is positively huge -- you'll find that some truly powerful and even positively scary shit can start happening. You see, one of the main activities in Data Mining is to extract *patterns* from data. For a portion of those patterns, you can then extract *new data* due to those patterns. If the amount of data is large enough, you'll get enough patterns with data extracted from them that you can then *find patterns between the patterns* . Once the amount of data reaches a certain threshold -- which is pretty much impossible to pin down exactly but we can say which systems / databases / knowledge bases are definitely above it and which ones are definitely below it so there is a usefulness in that regard -- a Data Mining pattern-finding algorithm can keep on finding more and more patterns indefinitely until literally *all* gaps in the knowledge regarding the Domain of Knowledge the data set is covering have been filled in. Of course, you need *a LOT of Computing Power* ; *VERY strong Algorithms* and a *SHIT-TON of data* to pull that off, but it has been empirically proven to be possible. My point being: if Clifford DeVoe's mind has the data capacity, computing power and computing tactics equivalent to a Supercomputer or even beyond that, then in actual fact the question of who Jack the Ripper is would be a *much* easier question than who someone's great grandmother is. Actually, the "great grandmother" question might be one of the hardest for a computer -- or someone like The Thinker -- who doesn't already have the required knowledge to find out, because it requires connecting a very specific person in the present to a very specific person in the past. With the identity of Jack the Ripper, by contrast, you only need information of the time at which the murders took place to potentially deduce who it was. By the way; a good example of a Company that has definitely crossed the threshold mentioned earlier -- specifically in the Domain of Knowledge about People and their Behaviour -- is Facebook. Provided you have a Facebook account, that is. You may think you haven't put your most intimate secrets on Facebook and that those secrets are therefore safe from Facebook's prying eyes, but you would be wrong. To give just an example of where some of the problems lie: did you know that if you have a FB Account, and you visit *any* web-page with one or both of those little Facebook "share" and "like" icons / buttons on them, that the IP-address of that web page is sent directly to Facebook? To be fair in regards to the Jack The Ripper thing: He's a Professor in History; who hasn't heard of Jack? As a historian, he would of studied him in some sort of way (even just personal interest), but his meta powers allow him to think at such an advanced level and gather the evidence he's read to conclude in like 5 seconds.
I think that the 8% chance that the thinker was not Clifford got a bit higher when the team realized that he was in a wheel chair and then of course they knew how triggered Barry would be at having a nemesis on a wheelchair again. Barry was acting impulsive (haha! Impulse)... and when people do that they don't think things thru which could roughly explain why he just rushed to the house. I'd go with the idea of Devoe trying to extract speedforce energy from Barry by experimenting on him. Hope the midseason finale brings us closer to Devoe's intentions.
Barry's a CSI, has been told before by Oliver to case his surroundings, has a secret identity yet doesn't wear a mask when already accessed of harassing a guy. This show is so poorly written sometimes.

I hated episode 2 with the whole Iris shit but she was perfectly fine and reasonable here but of course people have already decided to permanently hate on her loved the episode and though the 'we are the flash' line is cringy as always its what a fiance would say realistically my only issue is they had a great opportunity to have ralph help barry when no one believed him they set that up perfectly then removed him from the episode completely
Last time with zoom, everyone managed to push barry to stop being suspicious, this time Barry's basically saying screw you guys, this time i'm gonna prove it you idiots lol
This episode made me believe that the team actually did turn their back on Savitar in a timeline. They were super close to turning on him here and he's not Savitar so yeah!
Barry nearly lost his marbles in this episode. That is why no one believed him. Had he kept his cool and didn't let his insecure/nutty past self make an appearance, he might have acquired more traction with the team. Had the audience not received the reveal of the Thinker as of yet, Barry would have looked just as crazy to us as he did to team flash; as he had NO evidence. His hunch is not a strong case to support his claim. He should have got it together, calmed down, and gone about proving his case *without* breaking the law.

The way I see it, since he thinks of 'everything' he could be seeing 2ith his minds eye, all the alternate paths that one might take, thus the infinite multiverse. So as for the jack the ripper problem, maybe he knows it by thinking on an alternate reality where he is definitively caught.

But it would work with his telling his wife That "your husband" is dead (if I am remembering that quiet line right), since he's linked to an infinite number of himself. It would also be the next logical leap of a villain. Had our speedsters, one of whom was from multiple places in time and was basically the hero himself. So A hive mind of every version of this guy, at least living ones, would work out.
It's really absolutety disgusting how the Flash fanbase is acting.... Not understanding metaphors, not accepting true things that were established since season 1 because they are clouded by their hatred, finding every single reason to hate on a character even when it's completely stupid, And even forgeting that words have multiple meanings depending of the context and taking words litteraly like they have no brains....... To be fair you have to have a very high iq to understand the Flash. The writing is extremely subtle and without a solid grasp of dc comics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewers head.
When you guys were talking about Lyft that happened to me two times in a row at the airport. They accepted my request and then cancelled. The Lyft driver who did pick me up said it is because my request is a short route so less money so they took other people with longer routes. The worst was the second driver, he called me to confirm, saw it was a short drive said screw it, literally, and then hung up and two seconds later cancelled the request. The bitch of it was he was in the parking structure when he cancelled and drove right past me to pick someone else up
First of all, is it just me or is Captain Singh one of the most consistently well-written characters on The Flash? He may not be a hugely important part of the show, but he just does his damn job. Barry & Joe were - from his and a general law enforcement perspective - totally in the wrong here, so he called them on it. Secondly, what is this bullshit with the team treating Barry like a crazy person? It isn't as if they haven't dealt with foes that have been wheelchair-bound (whether legit or not) before, or from the future, or who are not whom they seem. They were fine with him & Joe confronting DeVoe with essentially no information other than his full name, but were aghast at the idea of pressing the investigation further? They wouldn't be acting like that if this was last season, and they'd seen a vision of Iris' death or something. Finally, as much as I was glad to see Wally again, it doesn't really feel like he's been gone long enough for a reunion, y'know? Maybe he should have left an episode or two earlier, or waited until the crossover episodes to actually start before returning. Clearly he would need to be at his sister's wedding (it's actually a pet peeve of mine when a character that is still alive in continuity doesn't turn up to a relative's wedding or funeral, and that happens in SO MANY shows). Just as an aside, I did like this bit of insight into how easily Barry could have used his powers to slip into a life of crime.

I always felt like Barry didn't use his speed inside of the house because of the light from lightning and the noise. It would've been harder to hide. But I definitely get the whole well couldn't he do it in 2 seconds thing.

The flash can heal fast. So maybe you are right. Devoe may want Barry's body. He'll be the fastest man and have the fastest brain.

Hate to be the bearer of an obvious pun, but it appears the writers put a lot of ...... thought .... behind this particular villain.
So I think the way that the Thinker gets his information is the same way Sherlock Holmes get's his information. Sherlock Holmes uses Holmesian or Abductive reasoning. A happens because of B. For example, The Flash returns the same time Barry Allen comes back from his sabbatical therefore Barry Allen is the Flash. It's not always an effective form of reasoning because it doesn't take into account that it could just be a coincidence or potentially other variables that could account for both character's existence but it's still relatively effective if he's able to confirm his deduction through other facts.
Imagine a single deduction as a tree. That one deduction could have several different branches and even more branches can stem from those single branches with each stem representing a different outcome from believing the deduction and proceeding in a different way. Let's say we made a thought tree where we know The Flash is Barry Allen. A branch could be for what happens if we expose him, another branch could be for if we don't, and another could be for if we join him with each of those branches going out further and further as we make a selection. While a normal human can conceive maybe 1 or 2 entire thought trees (we're talking average like combining Einstein's Mind with Mine for example) the Thinker can conceive an entire thought forest. He can maintain deductions and every single possibility for nearly anything that he decides to think about.
But as he gains information (more then likely by hacking security feeds and planting cameras around town) it starts narrowing down this forest into a little thought garden where certain events have narrowed what's possible. Things like the Speed Force and what not can be grasped if he's really intelligent (Professor Stein was able to figure it out so the Thinker probably already knew). From there he can then decide how he wants to proceed by cutting different possibilities out. It's possible the only reason he's decided to reveal himself now is because he's pruned the thought forest just enough to where he knows what all the outcomes are.

I think the way it works with Devoe is he's connected to the speed force in some way. Because he was struck by lightning and he considers himself the fastest mind. That way he can have all that info, like with Jack the Ripper. It's because he's pulling it from the speed force and it's knowledge.

This was a very suspenseful episode, I generally felt upset at how far ahead the Thinker was on team flash, and that’s a good thing.
Yes, yes, I am about 2,5 months late. But as a person with a (reasonably) extensive background in Computer Science, I can't help but respond to some things you said regardless.
I know a thing or two about what's called "Data Mining". It's a broad term for anything which involves the deep analysis of data, and has intersections with nearly every subfield of Computer Science. When combining Data Mining with Big Data -- which is obviously Data Processing where the amount of data available is positively huge -- you'll find that some truly powerful and even positively scary shit can start happening.
You see, one of the main activities in Data Mining is to extract *patterns* from data. For a portion of those patterns, you can then extract *new data* due to those patterns. If the amount of data is large enough, you'll get enough patterns with data extracted from them that you can then *find patterns between the patterns* . Once the amount of data reaches a certain threshold -- which is pretty much impossible to pin down exactly but we can say which systems / databases / knowledge bases are definitely above it and which ones are definitely below it so there is a usefulness in that regard -- a Data Mining pattern-finding algorithm can keep on finding more and more patterns indefinitely until literally *all* gaps in the knowledge regarding the Domain of Knowledge the data set is covering have been filled in.
Of course, you need *a LOT of Computing Power* ; *VERY strong Algorithms* and a *SHIT-TON of data* to pull that off, but it has been empirically proven to be possible. My point being: if Clifford DeVoe's mind has the data capacity, computing power and computing tactics equivalent to a Supercomputer or even beyond that, then in actual fact the question of who Jack the Ripper is would be a *much* easier question than who someone's great grandmother is. Actually, the "great grandmother" question might be one of the hardest for a computer -- or someone like The Thinker -- who doesn't already have the required knowledge to find out, because it requires connecting a very specific person in the present to a very specific person in the past. With the identity of Jack the Ripper, by contrast, you only need information of the time at which the murders took place to potentially deduce who it was.
By the way; a good example of a Company that has definitely crossed the threshold mentioned earlier -- specifically in the Domain of Knowledge about People and their Behaviour -- is Facebook. Provided you have a Facebook account, that is. You may think you haven't put your most intimate secrets on Facebook and that those secrets are therefore safe from Facebook's prying eyes, but you would be wrong. To give just an example of where some of the problems lie: did you know that if you have a FB Account, and you visit *any* web-page with one or both of those little Facebook "share" and "like" icons / buttons on them, that the IP-address of that web page is sent directly to Facebook? Oh, and by the way.... this is *regardless* of whether you're currently even logged in to your Facebook at the time. That's *A LOT* of data Facebook has about you. Basically all your habits, interests, dislikes, and also things like political affiliation and stuff like that can be gleaned from that data alone. Add in friend data, location data, the bits and pieces of personal information you have given them directly, and I can guarantee you that Facebook's Data Mining algorithms know *E V E R Y T H I N G* about you. Literally!! Scary, huh?

To be fair in regards to the Jack The Ripper thing: He's a Professor in History; who hasn't heard of Jack?
As a historian, he would of studied him in some sort of way (even just personal interest), but his meta powers allow him to think at such an advanced level and gather the evidence he's read to conclude in like 5 seconds.

I think that the 8% chance that the thinker was not Clifford got a bit higher when the team realized that he was in a wheel chair and then of course they knew how triggered Barry would be at having a nemesis on a wheelchair again. Barry was acting impulsive (haha! Impulse)... and when people do that they don't think things thru which could roughly explain why he just rushed to the house. I'd go with the idea of Devoe trying to extract speedforce energy from Barry by experimenting on him. Hope the midseason finale brings us closer to Devoe's intentions.
Barry's a CSI, has been told before by Oliver to case his surroundings, has a secret identity yet doesn't wear a mask when already accessed of harassing a guy. This show is so poorly written sometimes.
FailoReachForge he is not like Oliver he doesn't do spy stuff he only come and save. He isn't a vilain or a vigilante....So yeah that plus the pressure offres Devoe lead him to that. There's something called emotions that cab affect the jugement you Know, nothing like bad writting

Barry was acting impulsively. You know doing stuff without thinking? He wanted to desperately prove that Devoe is The thinker that he ended up paranoid.

loved the episode and though the 'we are the flash' line is cringy as always its what a fiance would say realistically
my only issue is they had a great opportunity to have ralph help barry when no one believed him they set that up perfectly then removed him from the episode completely

Barry nearly lost his marbles in this episode. That is why no one believed him. Had he kept his cool and didn't let his insecure/nutty past self make an appearance, he might have acquired more traction with the team. Had the audience not received the reveal of the Thinker as of yet, Barry would have looked just as crazy to us as he did to team flash; as he had NO evidence. His hunch is not a strong case to support his claim. He should have got it together, calmed down, and gone about proving his case *without* breaking the law.

The way I see it, since he thinks of 'everything' he could be seeing 2ith his minds eye, all the alternate paths that one might take, thus the infinite multiverse. So as for the jack the ripper problem, maybe he knows it by thinking on an alternate reality where he is definitively caught.

dave b I hadn't thought of it quite like that. But it would work with his telling his wife That "your husband" is dead (if I am remembering that quiet line right), since he's linked to an infinite number of himself.
It would also be the next logical leap of a villain. Had our speedsters, one of whom was from multiple places in time and was basically the hero himself. So A hive mind of every version of this guy, at least living ones, would work out.
It's really absolutety disgusting how the Flash fanbase is acting.... Not understanding metaphors, not accepting true things that were established since season 1 because they are clouded by their hatred, finding every single reason to hate on a character even when it's completely stupid, And even forgeting that words have multiple meanings depending of the context and taking words litteraly like they have no brains.......

When you guys were talking about Lyft that happened to me two times in a row at the airport. They accepted my request and then cancelled. The Lyft driver who did pick me up said it is because my request is a short route so less money so they took other people with longer routes. The worst was the second driver, he called me to confirm, saw it was a short drive said screw it, literally, and then hung up and two seconds later cancelled the request. The bitch of it was he was in the parking structure when he cancelled and drove right past me to pick someone else up

First of all, is it just me or is Captain Singh one of the most consistently well-written characters on The Flash? He may not be a hugely important part of the show, but he just does his damn job. Barry & Joe were - from his and a general law enforcement perspective - totally in the wrong here, so he called them on it.
Secondly, what is this bullshit with the team treating Barry like a crazy person? It isn't as if they haven't dealt with foes that have been wheelchair-bound (whether legit or not) before, or from the future, or who are not whom they seem. They were fine with him & Joe confronting DeVoe with essentially no information other than his full name, but were aghast at the idea of pressing the investigation further? They wouldn't be acting like that if this was last season, and they'd seen a vision of Iris' death or something.
Finally, as much as I was glad to see Wally again, it doesn't really feel like he's been gone long enough for a reunion, y'know? Maybe he should have left an episode or two earlier, or waited until the crossover episodes to actually start before returning. Clearly he would need to be at his sister's wedding (it's actually a pet peeve of mine when a character that is still alive in continuity doesn't turn up to a relative's wedding or funeral, and that happens in SO MANY shows). Just as an aside, I did like this bit of insight into how easily Barry could have used his powers to slip into a life of crime.

I always felt like Barry didn't use his speed inside of the house because of the light from lightning and the noise. It would've been harder to hide. But I definitely get the whole well couldn't he do it in 2 seconds thing.
