    Would you please go more into detail about the perspective?
    Like what would an example of a character perspective be in this instance, and how does it differ from a creators perspective

    • @themagicengineer5314
      @themagicengineer5314  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure. Here's a quick example. If we were to examine the star magic system from one of the spiders, this chould change a number of things.
      For one, they might have less information than we do as a creator. They might not understand how the stars influence the magic and assume it is managed by the will of the gods or something, making it feel like a softer system.
      It's a little tricky with this system, because we built most of it with the assumption that the civilizations would know most, if not more, about the magic than we do as the creator.
      If you've read the Mistborn trilogy, you can use this as a thought experiment. What does the blueprint look like to the reader, what would it look like to a noble without allomancy, and what would it look like to a Skaa with zero context for the magic. Each person's perspective changes things in this case

      Google "Exolore Podcast" and it should get you where you need to be. No idea why that didn't work

  • @Andrewtr6

    This isn't really very relevant to the video but I have multiple wip stories that have a magic system. I haven't developed the system for each yet but my idea has always been just make alteration to the magic system I have developed for those stories. Mostly just changing it to be softer or harder to fit the story. I came up with this because I didn't want to make a magic system from scratch for each story. But this has me wondering, is it ok to reuse a magic system? And I'm talking about for stories not set in the same world.

    • @themagicengineer5314
      @themagicengineer5314  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely! You can reuse a magic system over and over, as long as you continue to make it interesting. That was the main problem I had with the Shannara series. I liked the magic, but after half a dozen books, I really wanted to see something besides the elf stones, the song, and the sword. Or at the very least, something new about them.
      As for tweaking the hardness and softness, it sounds like you'll want to focus in on the protagonist perspective. At some point, the magic will be harder and better defined for the reader than it is for the character, so focus in on the character experience to create the balance you're looking for.

  • @arcanefeline

    Good to see a soft magic system, for once. People are too obsessed with the hard/hard-rational magic systems these days. Emphasize on "systems", not "magic".

    • @themagicengineer5314
      @themagicengineer5314  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I think Brandon Sanderson is a big reason for that. You can still find a lot of soft systems in the horror genre. Or if you want to see soft-irraitonal magic done well, check out Black Company by Glenn Cook

    • @arcanefeline
      @arcanefeline ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@themagicengineer5314 yep, I've read Black Company. I'm alway on a lookout for more soft-rational or soft-irrational magic systems, though. Or even hard-irrational.
      Magic having a degree of unpredictability, even for the magic users themselves, is alway good for the sense of wonder invokes, I think.

    How are you distinguishing infinite vs renewable magic sources? You said that the flux was neutral because while the commonness was increasing that was causing there to be less magic for each individual, but you also said that it was infinite rather than renewable.

    • @themagicengineer5314
      @themagicengineer5314  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The total pool of magic is consistent and is being diluted as more magic-users are born. But as a magic user, your energy reserves never run dry. you can keep performing magic as long as you are alive without having to stop for it to refill, recharge, or otherwise renew itself

  • @orionar2461

    So a mage perspective would have it he hard, because they know the stars

    • @themagicengineer5314
      @themagicengineer5314  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would certainly be a harder system to them than to any reader of the story simply because they know more, but I think it would still be on the soft side of the spectrum
      There are simply too many stars for them and constellations for a single mage to know them all
