Thank you so much for your channel and advice, Ross. I've landed my 2nd freelance client beyond my fulltime job, and this one has plenty of connections with clients of his own that might need video. Can't thank you enough for the inspiration and for letting all of us know that it is achievable!

I've learned the hard way that, as mentioned, you need to ask AND write it into a contract AND have the client sign that. I did a video for a client who refused to put anything into writing (red flag!!) and told me he wanted his product demo to be bright, detailed and different from the one he already had. Day of shooting he wrote some notes on a piece of torn cardboard. Shot and delivered. Client blew up because...I'm not joking here...he could see my hands as I assembled the product. It was a product assembly video. Then he also complained that it was different from the one he already had which was the point of hiring me LOL. Had to cut my losses and fire the client. I imagine that if I'd contracted it, payment would have been enforceable. I looked the company up later and the video they went with had the videographer's arms in the shots...shocking!

I feel your pain! I've been lucky to have only had 3 nightmare clients. Needless to say, I learned a lot from those encounters, and that knowledge has benefited my business significantly! We all live and learn! I hope all is well in your world.

I love your videos. Great insight. As constructive feedback I find it a little jarring with the two angles that are so similar and has the same focal length. Why not vary the two angles more?

Agreed! In fact I'm not a fan of the side angle at all in this format because with the A-cam it feels like Ross is talking directly to me (looking down the lens) and then in the B-cam it's like I'm watching him talk to someone else so it doesn't make sense...
Save the data and keep the 1 angle and just punch in / punch out haha!

@@adamhannis Agreed, I've never really been a fan of the side angle in any talking head capacity really even if they're not talking at the camera. It's like being in a crowd and seeing someone talk in person but teleporting between vantage points while trying to concentrate on what they're saying.
It's great for movies when there is meaning to angle switches, but for this not so much.

I’ve had multiple meetings with clients and they like what I offer and seem like my prices may be much when I share my reels with them. And, the prices depend upon on what they actually want or need for their brand. They ask how much do I charge right away like slow down let’s talk and discuss things and your budget for a commercial reel.

Can you provide us with a script or template? Would really love to nail down what to ask and how to ask on discovery calls

This happens more often than most people think. Many people don’t actually know these questions, and that’s okay. Honestly most people don’t expect a video guy to be asking these questions, they would normally find these questions come from more of a marketing firm. I found is just move on and try another question is the best way to go.
