  • The real story behind Native American art. We learn about art in various native communities before 1492. We see their hand paintings and paintings of animals. We see the baskets that were woven and the pottery designs. We are shown the masks that were made and how they played a part in ceremonies.

I did NOT expect to learn something about my Finnish heritage while watching a documentary on Native Americans! I've really been enjoying this series. I hope there's more!

The Finns are from the linguistic and ethnocultural group - Finn- Ugur. Along with Hungarians/ Magyars and Estonians. This is a subgroup of the Ural- Altai and can trace their ancestry to the taiga region of west Siberia. If the Beringia theory is true, then the Native Americans also migrated from an area near Siberia. DNA, linguistics, similar legends/ belief systems/ ( shamanism) all point toward this. Despite my last name, through my marriage to a Mexican, both of my parents were Hungarian refugees. Anthropology and history fascinates me. Although the Magyars were Europeanized and intermixed heavily with mostly Slavic and Germanic people, it is interesting to note how the ancient Magyars were expert horsemen, warriors, adept with the bow and arrow, lived in tents, had shamans, and pottery and embroidery that resembles somewhat, that of Latin America.

@@garethcaldwell3871 I am not sure, since I last visited Hungary as a young child... I imagine traces of it does, in belief systems, superstitions, and festivals like the bucsu... I know that modernised versions ( supposedly based on the oeiginal) like Yotengrit are practiced. Magyar shamanism was a form of Tengriism - which is still practiced in Mongolia and some parts of Central Asia. Parts of rural Romania still has some very old pre- Christian practices- though Gypsy, ( Roma) beliefs may be intermingled with these.

Let's start with the assumption that the people who lived there produced what's there, and then we can change the interpretation as your no doubt earthshattering evidence to the contrary comes in.

    • @deborahfarr2201

Because history would have you believe that we fought with each other and most tribes were independent of other tribes. That's wrong. We had elaborate trade systems. So if we were great at this or that, that's what they did. Then traded with others for what they did best or had in there area.

@@davidmrodriguez8067 Namibia, formerly South Africa. Horrible place the latter. Have lived in the US, beautiful place, so diverse, or at least at the time. That was 13 years ago. Terrible to see what is happening over there. I fear if it keeps up like that, people will become almost as generic as those in South Africa.
