    One thing I never hear mentioned about F-Zero X is how well implemented the rumble support is. The intensity ramps up subtly as you start to lose traction and you can tell when you're going to lose control just from the vibration level. It's one of the only games where I've found rumble makes a tangible improvement to the gameplay.

    • @MerkhVision
      @MerkhVision 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh I know exactly the type of thing u mean, that feeling is crucial for immersion in racing games. Forza Motorsport 4 on Xbox 360 did an excellent job with that as well. You could actually tell how much traction u had based on how the tires reacted to the different driving surfaces. That’s how Forza won me over when I used to be a big Gran Turismo fan instead

    I miss this series. It is very distinct from other racing games, and even other anti-gravity racing games. The absence of items or weapons puts the focus entirely on the driving skills of the player, and even the attacks have to be well executed. I'm not that good at it, but racing in this game (and F-Zero GX) is very satisfying. It's such a shame Nintendo is content with graverobbing F-Zero's features to add them in Mario Kart.
    Also, it might be a small aspect of the game, but I love the characters in F-Zero X. Each one cooler/"badass-er"/sillier than the other, it's like a fighting game's roster!

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Try out Fast RMX for Switch. In the absence of an actual F-Zero game, this is one that is brilliant and has the gameplay of f-zero and the gravity bending of racing around a tube track and all that, and the sense of speed is unmatched I think. It's the closest thing to a modern version of the n64 and Gamecube F-Zero games and I don't know how they manage to make it so good looking and so fast at the same time, on a handheld device, but there you go, there it is. It's just a lot of fun

    • @philcoast1031
      @philcoast1031 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@duffman18 Oh, I tried that one, in fact it was one of three games I got when I bought my Switch.
      I liked it, and it's closer to F-zero than most game I've seen (in particular the Hero mode), but... its not quite the same. The ship's design and lack of pilots reminds me more of Wipeout, and the color-switching didn't work that well IMO. Still, kudos to Shin'en Multimedia, their games are very impressive.

    I wanted this game so bad imported it from Japan and played it all summer before the US received in the fall. - Worth noting at the time many hated the lack of detail despite it being necessary for the speed and FPS. - I’ll never forget one Cup X course I played that created a downward 90 degree turn that would kill all CPU cars. Hilarious!

      Nothing to do with the X Cup, but in novice difficulty everyone just dies in Red Canyon 1 (The one with various jumps). They die so hard, that I remember winning that race because all the computers died. Do you actually win when all other racers die or it's just my memory doing weird shit?

    • @JetWolfEX
      @JetWolfEX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I disagree, It's much easier to get rid of other racers in GX, the side attack is really easy to use and powerful, you have to actually race well to win in X so it's harder trying to get rid of rivals slows you down too much and is more risky.
      However the GX story mode is the more difficult than anything else in the series...

    • @crazyjay6331
      @crazyjay6331 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      exactly, X is far better. The vehicles actually have momentum behind them, drifting and DTD's add a whole level of fun. GX is a completely different game based on the same characters, the way the machines handle isn't even comparable.

      Yeah, one of the reasons the game wasn't such a hit is that these were the days when gaming magazines were at their peak. Most people saw still shots of the game and decided the graphics looked bare and simplistic. You had to see it in motion to realize that they'd traded graphical detail for speed and a rock solid framerate. And it was a good trade.

    It also acted as a entry point for me to discover heavy metal. Really great memories.
    Also, gonna be pedantic and point out that F-Zero X is not the only N64 game to run at 60fps. There were definitely more of them like Yoshi's Story and Mischief Makers.

    I am one of a privileged few to own the 64DD and the F-Zero X Expansion Kit which propels this game to new heights, in my opinion even higher than GX. It's a crime against humanity that Nintendo hasn't re-released that in some form.

    My favorite game on the N64 but a decent margin, haha I was borderline offended by such a question, esp when M Kart bores me to tears yet that's all anyone talks about.
    GX is my favorite arcade racer oat and outright game oat, and X is not far behind in least bit, phenomenal series. I love how Xs gameplay (physics/handling model/aerial control etc) is different from GX while still being uniquely great. Rest in Peace incredible F-Zero Series.

    Okay, weird story.
    I first saw this as a preview in Gamefan. It was a small blurb, and after, I saw absolutely nothing. I figured it was cancelled, and that was my own headcannon for a long, long time.
    So imagine my shock when I saw this at a Collectible/Game shop years and years later.

    This was a damn good game. My favorite track was one of the simplest, with the O shape. The sense of speed with the music (i think it was Dream Chaser) was so good. Sometimes I would go to such a high speed that the car would jump off the race track on its own. Good times

    _Yoshi's Story_ ran at 60 FPS if I'm not mistaken, as did _Super Mario 64_ judging from how swiftly Mario moves in it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
    That said, Nintendo's choice to pare down on graphical advancements for a higher framerate in this game was a good one. It still looks good, and the fact that it experiences no slowdown with 30 cars on screen is amazing.

      I was going to chime in on that too. Dragon Quarter is really interesting and enjoyable if you accept it for what it is. It probably shouldn't have been a Breath of Fire game, but it isn't a bad game. On the other hand, there's nothing interesting or enjoyable about Mega Man X7, it's just a poorly executed Mega Man game. They shouldn't be lumped together.

    • @SamWeltzin
      @SamWeltzin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple not-so-good things about BoF5, but overall it's still a really good game. But as James said, it probably should've been marketed as a spinoff, not a sequel. Very easily could have been since it didn't have 5 in the title, but everyone assumed it was a sequel because there hadn't been another BoF for years prior.

    Great video, glad you're back! Man, I would not agree it went to better things with the GC version. That was a SEGA game and you could really feel it. It was good alright but had that same superficial feeling many SEGA racers have. F-Zero X is a true Nintendo game. In the genre, it's a climax (and on that pun, I shall leave:) Great to watch you again, fella!

      @retrosoul8770 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicolasdoucet32 superficial? Is this one of the worst takes I've seen or what... Try harder Nintendo fan. I absolutely love X, favorite 64 game by far, it's brilliant but in it's own way. The handling model, physics, air control etc are different from GX but to sit here on a high horse and condescend towards Sega just because you prefer X over GX is petty. Just like X, mastering GX on Master difficulty or completing the story on hard takes practice, memorization and skill, there's nothing superficial about its gameplay in fact it's quite the opposite. Terrible comment.

    • @nicolasdoucet32
      @nicolasdoucet32 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retrosoul8770 alright, maybe superficial was a bad choice of word, it's true the game was probably the richest in volume anyway. But it just didn't feel right to me in many ways. There was something truly thrilling about this N64 version (Big hand for instance) that seemed to vanish after. I felt it became more like Wipeout (the soundtrack is testimony of that). To be honest, I felt similarly about the GBA versions, apart from the last one. They didn't recapture the thrill for me.
      I'm really not a Nintendo fan you know, I love and collect all systems and I have an Astro City, that's how much I want Sega in my home. We don't need to get tense. I guess we're both sorry the series has stopped, right? Here is to something we have in common:)

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicolasdoucet32 Yeah F-Zero fans will always have that in common. But yes there are some tracks I would have loved to see in GX (red canyon for ex), including the randomizer. The kickass story missions make some of that up for me though. And yeah I agree on the metal ost too, though I still like both osts despite GX's being perhaps inferior. One thing I like more about X are the aerial physics, tilting upwards dramatically increases the sense of air speed. Whereas GX feels flat by comparison in the air.
      The Wipeout series (which I love too) control/play more like boat racing where GX feels more like an F1 game, the grip was increased from X to make it more accessible, but also for tighter/faster handling around corners than what's possible in X which I think is an improvement over X's much looser, less stable style of handling. However in X you can do "blast turns" as Maximum Velocity refers to it, tapping the A button to maintain grip around corners at high speed, which is cool technique.
      GX is easier for newcomers to play but still very hard to master just like X. With a better sense of ground speed perhaps due to newer hardware.
      GX is my favorite game oat with X right there too but both games are masterpieces as far as I'm concerned so I don't judge anyone who prefers one over other, it was just how you said it hah, but yeah cheers to another game man.

    I've been on an F-Zero kick lately, playing both the SNES and N64 games. My only gripe is I wish there were more tracks, but I still haven't unlocked the X-Cup, so maybe I'm in for a surprise - I see a rendition og Rainbow Road there in your video. Gotta say, I'm really loving both games.
    I'm skipping F-Zero GX for now, because I've heard the developers went way overboard with the difficulty, and that just doesn't appeal to me. I love difficult games, but not when it happens to racing games. There a whole slew of mechanics behind getting first place on an Expert course - speed, turning, drifting, etc. - that I just can't be bothered to learn right now. Maybe some day, though.

    I'd say this title is more accessible than GX, which is awesome, but with a steeper learning curve, I think. Also, it amazes me how "minimalistic" F-Zero X visually is compared to Xtreme-G or other futuristic racers, however, its gameplay seems much more solid. Easy to start, hard to master, but with a fluid progression. Love this game!
