    I grew up in the vinyl age and must say that it's very refreshing to see a young person such as yourself getting the most out of this hobby and most importantly knowing exactly what you're talking about. You are very well spoken and interesting to watch and listen to. I'm sure what you've done here will be of great value to many who are getting into the hobby. Very well done!!

      Yes I know but most of them don't have the knowledge that this young man does.

      maybe not teens as such, mostly hipsters that buy cheap turntables lol,

    • @atmoz_
      @atmoz_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I guess you don't know what a hipster is? The hipsters would be the once with the expensive and right stuff.
      Think the new vinyl fans are mostly doing it the right way (or do the research before how to do it right where this video is good for). The only place I see for the Crosley are the wannabee's or the parents who only mean well. Can't imagine somebody want to get into the hobby and think I'll spent good money for records but not for the record player where everybody complains about the cheap all in once.

    Some technical comments: the audio is not "etched" it is "pressed" from a metal master. Also wax went out in the 50s, all 33 1/3 rpm records are pressed in vinyl.

      Joshua Simmonds Vwestlife debunked the crosely tracking force record destroying myth. Although they are cheap. It's silly to buy new turntables when the technology has hardly advanced. You can just get turntables from previous decades that originally went for hundreds for like 70$

    I have been collecting records since 1958 when I was two years old. j have had several turntables over the years, ariston, Oracle Delphi, systemdek, maplenol, and currently a rega 3. speakers over the years included Polk audio 7, paradigm, celef, spica t 50, that I recall. it's been a blast collecting and listening to well over 6000 LPs over the years. nice video!! 😀

    • @RightWing1
      @RightWing1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremy Stillwell With a Crosley you are unlikely to hear the damage unless you put the record onto a decent system. If you get a brand new second copy of a record and compare them on a decent system, I wouldn't be surprised at the difference. I bet your listening enjoyment will be a 1000 times better o a system such as in the video

    As much as i enjoy my own vinyls, seeing kids who think you literally need to drop a grand or more just to listen to music is mind boggling. Its nothing more then a marketing and trendy right now that give or take in a few years most of these youtubers will regret spending all the amounts on vinyl players, speakers etc. Find what you like and use it, don't let some snob who threw a couple grand at theirs tell you how to enjoy your own.

  • @miltonruas5368
    @miltonruas5368 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Anti-static brush used in a wrong way... you are only cleaning the dust, but the anti-static continues there. In order to discharge the anti-static you need to touch it to the ground... in other words cleaning to the direction of the centre (and not outwords) and touch the metallic part of the brush to that little metallic thing where the record hole enters! And then you clean the brush to your hands.... yaic!!! what are you doing? Did you notice you can rotate the hand support 360º which will remove the dust of the fibers? About the stylus cleaning, I don't think it's a good idea to use any liquid at all. Just a small dry fiber brush is enough, and GENTLY beneath the stylus... When I see the tonearm going up, that does not look gentle. Everything about playing a record needs care and love. This is just an advice... please don't get me wrong. Regards.

      Milton Ruas all very good points, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I've had a few people telling me the things I was getting wrong and have adjusted the ways I use the setup as a result. Kind of amazed I didn't think about a few of them before making this video! Thanks for the advice though, rest assured the bad habits I demonstrate occasionally in this video are no longer a problem. Thanks again for the comment, have a great day! :)

      Not trying to be smart or witty, I came here because I"m interested in buying a record player and some vinyls, but after reading through the comments , I'm not so sure. Understandably, the experience of listening to an album can be heightened by listening on vinyl. That being said, it seems that you can do so many small things incorrectly that they can magnify and detract from the experience or worse yet, ruin your vinyl or player and make you look like an idiot. It's to the point where I feel paralyzed by fear of not spending at least $300 on a player, another $50-$100 on a stylus, cleaning supplies, and then finding out my novice entry level Energy speakers are complete shit and that I really need a $800 player to even begin to appreciate and listen the the correct way. Why bother, eh? Perhaps I just made my own point that it's "not for me" unless someone wants to talk me off the ledge. Cheers.

      Nathan McGlynn do it. get a decent table. n just do it. in listening to a few oldies on a crosley but am looking at getting an audio technical. I'm thinking like this. back in the 70 s ppl didn't take great care n sum of those records r still hanging n not completely trashed. I'm gonna play the same record everyday on the crosley and see if I really get any damage. but whatever cds can get scratched n still b fine. even if you finger the grooves it might mess it up but it'll still be ok. just do it up man

    I have a turntable from Vibe and it never damaged any vinyl. I had it since the Christmas of 2016 and it's still working well. The only problem I had was the singers voice not coming through. But with an adjustment of some wires, it's back to normal. I couldn't find proper wooden crates for my records so at had to make my own from metal wire crate sheets. It didn't ruin anything

    Careful with the stylus cleaning fluid on any ortofon 2m cartridge. If the fluid contains a solvent like isopropyl alcohol it will gradually dissolve the glue holding the stylus on to the cantilever. Ortofon advise against it.

    As a point of reference, I've never had an issue using original equipment like Dual turntables that have been cleaned like new. They were made at a time when vinyl was THE way to listen to music. Record stores are the best way to learn about the equipment you need and try it out before you buy!

    Hi Tom, my name's Howard and watching this video has given me a strong sense of deja vu - in many ways you are like myself, choosing a separates set up and avoiding those hideous Crossleys though in 'my day' - the late 70's - the bette noir were music centres. My Pioneer record deck and Wharfdale speakers lasted me about 35 years and were still going but I decided to upgrade/modernise a few years back with a Project Carbon and some Q Acoustic speakers. Seriously though, why do you young uns not just stream or download? Saves space!

    I wouldn't knock all budget tables, before I bought my AT LP120 I had a Pyle plttb1. it had a counter weight which was pretty accurate, anti skating, a removable headshell, strobe light, and pitch control. felt cheap but worked amazing with and upgraded headshell and cartridge. For $77 it was a great turntable to rediscover music and decide if I wanted to invest more into a better setup, and yes the AT LP 120 sounds better but not by a lot with the pyle I had a technics headshell with an Ortofon 2m red set at 2.1 grams. However that was the only cheap thing in my set up, the receiver and speakers weren't cheap.

    Nice budget setup but I would recommend pulling the speakers out at least 10 inches away from the wall for proper bass response and less feedback that placement is not doing you any favors, how are you enjoying the rpm 1.3? I would also recommend getting a decent quality phono pre amp and bypass the one from your receiver, Add a nice sub and you are off to a great start.

    Is an Audi Technica LP60 worth getting

      The build in phono preamp in the LP120 is is really bad sounding :-(. I guess the same goes for the LP60. I recommend starting with a Rega Planar 1 and a separate phono preamp. That also gives you an option to upgrade it later without changing the turntable. Long term investment ;-).

    I'm thinking of buying a pro-ject elemental or essential III, do you know if you need an amplifier with that or can you just get powered speakers and thats your setup ready?

    • @janoschamann3008
      @janoschamann3008 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it depends on if it has got a built-in preamp. The other solution is to buy a powered speaker with built-in phono stage/preamp.
      (Excuseme for my weak english knowledge...)

    All belt drives are manual selection only? What turntable do you know of, rather belt or direct, that can automatically detect the record size and speed?

    • @OldB0y50
      @OldB0y50 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were loads in the 80's from the likes of Sony, Pioneer, Aiwa, Panasonic B&O etc that could detect size, and some could even do track selection. Not sure about automatically detecting the correct speed though.

    • @gmm213
      @gmm213 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was more geared to the statement that all belt drives are manual selection only, inferring that direct drives use this magic to not have to. I have seen track selection ones. Since the size dictates the speed, in most cases (though if its an odd physical size then it would throw off the detecting ability), then either the automatic size detect ones could change speed accordingly or the ability to detect size has no effect what so ever. I didn't know they had auto detect ones though. Ill have to look into them.

      no, you can get belt driven turntables with electronic PSUs. No need to move the belt to adjust speed, just flick a switch on the PSU.

    I bought a Audio Lab 8000A Preamp and 8000P Power amp in 1997 it has never put a foot wrong, its never been to a repair shop in its whole life very reliable.

    I had a Audiolab 8000A back in the 90's....fantastic amp and built like a brick outhouse. I would argue that it's warm sounding....to me it's very good at detail...clean crisp sounding. It's not very forgiving on bad recordings. Having said that, I was using mine almost always for CD playback, so I would imagine the phono output would be of a very good quality. I ended up replacing mine with a Arcam 8R, which in theory is a lesser sounding amp....but was more forgiving of bad recordings and sounded warmer.
    Like the Project....I remember when their original Debut came out in about 1990!!!!....basically a Rega Planer copy.
    Amazing how things go full cycle.......
