Great video and I love the minis chosen. (And there are so many to choose from.) Those early 40k dreadnoughts were certainly impactful. While I adore the ork dread and the goblin pilot nailed into it, they are edged out by the eldar dreadnoughts. My first glimpse of those spindly alien lines and the blank carapaces looming in the breach of the castle wall in WD 100 and I was infatuated and adamant that these were the best things ever. Three decades and I still love them to bits.
Just wanna write a little something down here, super glad i stumbled upon this channel. I miss warhammer so much, from the US so aside from ordering theres not many stores left at least where I live. I remember getting my first box of 40k for a birthday when i was a kid, was tyranid gaunts. Walked by a games workshop in a mall near me and insisted that i collected every bit they had in that store. Suffice to say it didnt happen but it started something crazy, must've built 3 or 4 armies, even got warhammer units just to build and paint, was super young then so the employees at the store said warhammer mightve been too complicated to start with so they pushed me towards 40k. Anyways think my mom bought me the box about a month before my birthday actually was but i found the spot they were hid and no joke I sneaked a look at the box every single day leading up to my birthday lol. Sadly that store closed a year or 2 after that to my dismay, was hard pressed to find another spot that sold em at least to the same extent. I did managed to find another small hobby shop that had a select bit of some of the armies but they overpriced em even more. Then that placed moved and as the years went on they flexed out more and more of the warhammer for other more popular stuff. I still have a bunch buried away, this channel might be the inspiration i need to bust em out and pick it up again. And I'm sry lol, maybe i was a little late to the warhammer party but I always thought the older models looked hideous haha. Anyways just thought to leave a little note, found the channel last night, loving the vids I've spam watched and your painting skill is absolutely insane.
The "Assault on Black Reach" Set brought me into Warhammer Tabletop as well. The Deffcoptas in this Set are so well made and unique. Ive bought the set 4 times (3 times for less then 20€ in a random toy store)
The 2000's I'd say the best things that came out that I remember are the plastic Dread kit for space marines, and the plastic Land Raider. Both were a step up in detail and posability compared to anything else in the space marine lineup at the time, and the opening door and paintable interior on the land raider were amazing.
The 80s were probably the most fun era for me with citadel miniatures, even though later during the 90s i would be producing injected moulds in a factory for GW, the 80s were just a bit more magical because i was a teen in that time, and the metal miniatures always felt like something special, the high impact polystyrene moulds for me, lacked the character and uniqueness that most metal minis had. I think my fav citadel mini in the 80s was Sir Loin Foul Breath the Minotaur, a massive axe in one hand, some talons for the other hand, hunched over and just so cool. Being bought up on early Sinbad films really got me into greek mythology at a young age, and when we discovered citadel, we all fell in love with the figures.
For me that mono-pose Space Marine is so iconic because not only was it the first model i ever owned but because of the giant stone statue of it outside Warhammer World in Nottingham UK. That is Warhammer for me
I'm really new to the hobby, so I don't really know how old or new something is, but easily my favorite GW release I've gotten to work with is the Putrid Blightkings box for Age of Sigmar Nurgle armies. Everything goes together well, and there are so many cool options included in the box.
This was fun. I do think the Defiler deserves an honourable mention, it’s not the greatest model they’ve Made, but all the articulation points and extra bits have made for some really cool conversions and display poses. That first box came with so much stuff, I’m just now, nearly twenty years after I bought my Deffy, using the last of the spikes and demon faces and other chaosy bits with the chaos starter box I picked up last week.
Oh man seeing Guy bring up Assault on Black Reach really hit me man. That was my introduction to the hobby. At the end of my 4th grade year my mom bought my brother and I that box set and a Tyranid Battle Force for my older brother and I before she went on deployment to Kuwait. My brother and I spent all summer painting models and playing 40k. I played Marines and he played Nids and I would lose almost every game we played but we had such a blast
I soooo agree with Miscast’s picks that I had to subscribe to his channel. You guys did a great job on this one, but in my mind, @miscast wins. I am probably older than you guys are, and i wished snotlings (hey... bought my first bloodbowl set ever just yesterday!) and ogres (not always dynamic though) would have been featured in this video, but still... the giant... gobbapalooza... I mean. The giant, I bought it way after it was released, but it was a dream coming true! And then as I speak, I am painting that magic potion making Goblin from the gobbapalooza set and it is so much fun!!! Seriously guys. This made my saturday morning!
Wow, Emil! I just hit the 7:35 mark where you mention you went from Warhammer to metal, and now you have come back into the "hobby." I'm feeling surprisingly relatable, as that could be used verbatim to describe myself with a very wide brush. Anyways, keep up the great work! Have you painted a noise marine? If not, perhaps paint one for a vid that matches with your "genre." Then again, could I suggest that Swedish gem Crimson by Edge of Sanity, in a Tzeentchian whisper? 😂
80's - Chaos Dreadnought, the one with the old crab claw. 90's - Avatar of Khaine, still holds up to this day, and who can forget the iconic black and white artwork with the dead space Marine? 00's - Dark Elf Corsair Champion with axe and severed head, looked just like Raziel from Soul Reaver, so an instant hit. 10's - kurnoth hunter with bow, absolutely gorgeous design. Great video.
Nice overview with some sweet memories. My personal taste finds it tough to find anything pleasing from the "middle ages" of GW models from late 90's through early 2000's. However it's great to look back and find the little nuggets of good work amongst the range :)
I think one of my recent favourites was the Imperial Knight kit. It picked a model so obscure I barely remember it, never mind owning it and brought it kicking and screaming into modern times. It looks both noble and brutal thanks to the massive chainsword and it's been the canvas for some incredible paintjobs and some mindblowing conversions. It's become popular enough to spawn an entire army with it's own chaos spin-off.
80s Kaleb Daark 90s The Green Knight. Honourable Mention Talisman Dark Elf Sorceress. Iconic as all hell. And made of plastic. 2000s Juan Diaz Daemonettes!!! Seriously none of you mentioned these??!! 2010s Plastic Witch Elves! I mean come on. They're Witch Elves in plastic and I still can't believe they're 7 years old - they look just as good as any other sculpt to this day. These models have a special place in my heart they got me back into the hobby in the 2010s. And their predecessors were the ones that got me into Warhammer in the first place in the early 2000s! 2020s so far... The Indomitus Assault Marines - Primaris with bolter and chainsword - 'nuff said
@@pianomanwithapianoplan504 sorry I wrote this at a point when I found goobertown to be the most boring warhammer youtuber on the planet and had some seriously irrational issues with the guy.
bittersweet to see the 40k scale thunderhawk to get an honourable mention... the epic scale version is, for me, the coolest mini that gw ever put out (i have a soft spot for the epic scale dreadnoughts, too... maybe because epic 40k space marines were the first army i ever collected, but still, there's something about those sculpts that sets them apart from their larger brethren)
I'm really new to warhammer. The new goblins are what first caught my interest a few weeks ago. Best goblins I've ever seen, so i was happy they were mentioned.
If I had to choose a kit, the original Fellowship of the Ring box that was sculpted by the Perry Brothers is just so hard to beat from a detail perspective, especially Aragorn and Frodo.
Some great choices there! I totally agree about Archaon, he is still one of my favourite models and exemplified the new look for Chaos. Beefy, menacing and barbaric. I overall like the lumineth, but they need the horns removed, and the giants need their heads replaced with something like scibor's Basing Kit #2.
I lived 40 miles from the original Citadel miniatures factory in Newark in the 80’s. You could turn up at the factory and they would let you pick any figures and models from there storage bins and then charge you by the weight of the metal. I found some fantastic figures that were never released to the public. I wish I had kept them.
The green knight makes my list no matter what. The standout mini from a range thats come to represent a time before gw went to the gutter. Having painted it the mini is gorgeous from every angle and allows for creativity that modern minis dont
Man... I own all the models listed (except Alariel) ! Yes, even the 5,5 kg Thunderhawk (serial N° 40,250). But I have excuses ! I'm aging (soon turning 50), I worked for GW and like Obelix, I fell in the cauldron in my early years ! My selection : 80's -Tinboyz from the mekboyz inventions serie. So much character and humour. The Marine version is an icon for me. 90's - the Eldar range. They are still around since 2nd edition ! 00's - the original Red Gobbo ! Small grinning beauty of a mini ! GW has always been a master for character minis that tell a story just by looking at them. 10's - the Nighthaunt range. Such a progression in the mastery of posing plastic minis. 20's - Indomitus Primaris Captain in terminator armour (That's a shield you got Mr !). Only new release I've bought in 2020 until now. And after making such a list, you realise that you missed so many great models / ranges that should be named ! Only downside I see in the late years, converting is becoming more tedious with the way models fit together now. But you can always acheive great unique and personnal models with dedication !
For the '80s: The Gob Lobber. It's technically more than one model, though. It's the first mini I'd ever seen, it tells a great little story, and you got a little goblin all netted up and ready to be flung at the enemy! In the '90s: The Avatar of Khaine. This model was a great update to the original and showed how truly immense he is compared to your average Eldar. The pose is dynamic and it was so fun to paint. For 2000-2009: I'd have to say the Lord of the Rings Balrog. 2010-2019: Roboute Guilliman. The Daemon Primarchs are great, but somehow seeing a Loyalist Primarch was reinvigorating to me as both a painter and a player. 2020: The Triumph of St. Katherine. Like the Gob Lobber it's not really one model, but come on. It's brilliant.
It's not an official mini, but for nostalgia reasons I wanna bring up the Ghoritch rat ogre conversion that was in the White Dwarf (Issue #311, I looked it up!). I'm pretty sure those couple of pictures are what opened my eyes to converting and kit bashing back in the day. I was and still am an ork player, and the damn thing looked so good with old Ghaz's power klaw!
Watching this video makes me think about my army of Valhallan Ice Warriors. Im realtivly new to the hobby, comeing up on my 2nd year in and I've already amassed a large collection because of how much I Enjoy it, but in my early days when I bought my first box of Tau my friends were telling me about the Imperial Guard and showing me what they looked like in the Killteam rulebook. I Was interested and started to look into the Imperial Guard when I found a video about the Valhallan Ice Warriors and I was hooked. I Dashed over to google to see if these madmen had any models and I was sad when I found out that they were no longer in print. I could find small groups of them on ebay, but nowhere near enough to make a whole army. So for a while I had been planning out how could I convert myself an army of Ice warriors through kit-bashing Bolt Action and guard kits. But then in Febuary they announced that for a limited time they would put the Valhallans back up on the market and It was like Christmas come early. I snatched up the platoon and I've worked hard to make these models the best in my collection, my first fully painted army, and by far the most striking. The Models in my opinion are just simply my favorite models in all of wargaming, there is just so much character in each of the sculpts that really just set the scene of the Relentless, unending Ice Warriors who will stop at nothing to achieve victory as well as they keep a soft spot in my heart as these old metal models from a faraway time, discontinued, but standing still and holding up rather well to even some newer models.
I'll just throw in my comment of the best WH40K model (because it started me on my journey): The pewter Space Wolves Iron Priest I got in '93 while in England, originally packaged in the old blue card board bubble. Still love it to this day.
Great video, cool to see you guys having a chat. I guess my picks would be: 80s - on screen beside Guy's choice, the Daemonhunter as he was listed there, I think it is Ordo Malleus Inquistor. Probably the style of mini that influenced my liking the Deathwing terminators/knights, in robes. 90s - Abaddon the Despoiler 00s - I really have no idea what came out in these years (though it is pretty certain I was still buying models) 10s - I think the late 10s had a great run of models making it a tough choice and I will cheat slightly and pick the Triumvirate of Ynnead, for 3 great models. Amalia Novena is a serious contender here too. 20s - Lumineth Realm-lords - The Light of Eltharion - so disappointed this is only in a big box set.
Oh damn, I have that Archeon on Horse mini and didn't know what it was, except that it was some kind of Chaos Knight. I have it sitting around to be painted as a "free commission" for a friend.
I have a special Modell, which might have been released somewhere around 1990, so I can't say, if it realy is a Sculpt from the 80ies or 90ies: The Space Marine Captain with E-Fist, desighnt by Jess Goodwin. (This is Special and highly Iconic for me, because it was the very first Model I ever painted.)
Black reach changed so many 90's kids lives. I remember hustling the crap out of my parents just for mcragge. Then a few months later they dropped black reach and maaaaaannnnn. The awe the beauty of those orks man. The sheer hype running through you and your mates suddenly unstoppable 30 marine 60 ork forces from splitting it. Ahhhhhhhh the times.
Here is my list: 80s - Saturnine Terminator 90s- The Green Knight 00s- Watch Captain Artemis (54mm) 10s- Sister Superior Amalia Novena 20s- The new Zoat
The new Be'Lakor model got me really hyped. Haven't played for 12 years or so, but I want that as a display piece in my shelf. Almost entirely because one of my favorite metal bands of all time is named after that demon. If you like metal, check them out. Wonderfully crafted lyrics. I need to get a new airbrush if I'm going to buy that model though.
My favorite models that I own from the last 5 decades are: 80's - plague marines and Nurgle Warriors from fantasy. They look like plague bearers popping out of armor 90's - the Eldar farseer pointing/ praetorian & Mordian guard. They scream 2nd edition to me! 00's - the Zacharius the Everliving. He got me into WHFB 10's - the solitaire harlequin/ Nagash 00's - Fabius Bile. He's the only new release I've bought in 2020. Though I would say the FW HH series characters and Primarchs but I don't own them :)
Right lads, this video was superb. You three need to start doing some more content together or a podcast or something because I think you're really onto something here.
my all time favorite GW miniatures are the Dark Elves Chris Fitzpatrick designed. My favorite of the Age of Sigmar time is Alarielle on the giant bug. Im using the bug as a second giant Spider for my night goblins, and Alarielle is slowly turned into a demon princess for my Slaanesh army.
I just cannot pass by the old model of the demon prince of nurgle. Even though it was released several decades ago, it still looks so detailed that I am amazed. But most importantly, it contains the spirit of that very old chaos. All those round brass arrows on the armor, floating parts look so ... classic. Forever in my heart.

Surprised not to see The Light of Eltharion - that took my breath away when I first saw it.
The 2000's I'd say the best things that came out that I remember are the plastic Dread kit for space marines, and the plastic Land Raider. Both were a step up in detail and posability compared to anything else in the space marine lineup at the time, and the opening door and paintable interior on the land raider were amazing.
This seriously is one of my favorite warhammer videos ever, I have so much in commen in experience! Insane
Hey thanks for picking my painted Ork dreadnought and crediting me !
Good choices lads !
Dude I LOVE the blog. Recently found it. The paint job is marvellous.
I'm still in love with the daemonettes from the 90s and 2000s
The way that Ork Warboss brought y'all back, it was the Harlequin Shadowseer that brought me in when I saw it at a friend's house.
My first fantasy army was wood elves, i painted one of the wardancers when I was really young. Didn't come out well but it was fun
80s Kaleb Daark
90s The Green Knight.
The Indomitus Assault Marines - Primaris with bolter and chainsword - 'nuff said
The WhatsApp group with these guys maniac and goober town must be epic!
That must just be so disgustingly wholesome...
@@kingjulian7045 why?
@@pianomanwithapianoplan504 sorry I wrote this at a point when I found goobertown to be the most boring warhammer youtuber on the planet and had some seriously irrational issues with the guy.
@@kingjulian7045 oh, no problem, I use to think he was a bit meh to, but I’ve watched a few of his videos and there good
Sweet, I have that inquisitor model. Been meaning to strip it and a suitable replacement for the missing arm.
Just watched you paint the thunder hawk that you never thought you'd have, keep it up man !
bittersweet to see the 40k scale thunderhawk to get an honourable mention... the epic scale version is, for me, the coolest mini that gw ever put out (i have a soft spot for the epic scale dreadnoughts, too... maybe because epic 40k space marines were the first army i ever collected, but still, there's something about those sculpts that sets them apart from their larger brethren)
12:07 OMG. Love that mug!!!
I'm really new to warhammer. The new goblins are what first caught my interest a few weeks ago. Best goblins I've ever seen, so i was happy they were mentioned.
Great video, thanks for amazing content.
My most vivid memory is a bunch of christmas themed snotlings, pumpkins converted to snowballs and so on. This was in 1989-90 or so.
Yes another, video!
Just wanna say i love your work and you inspired me to paint mini's.
2:27 Imperial inquisitor and terminator in warhammer, now THAT'S the crossover of the century😂😂😂😂
Pretty surprised The Emperors Champion didnt get mentioned. Its one of my favourite sculpts and its super iconic. Great vid regardles :D
that 1 second of metal Emil stole the whole video loool
MY favourite model is that chaos lord from that starterbox where they pitted Dark Angels against Chaos Marines
I lived 40 miles from the original Citadel miniatures factory in Newark in the 80’s. You could turn up at the factory and they would let you pick any figures and models from there storage bins and then charge you by the weight of the metal. I found some fantastic figures that were never released to the public. I wish I had kept them.
Best combination of youtubers! Please do more of this
Found it: th-cam.com/video/-wWWzI3FIWc/w-d-xo.html
My favourite models of all time are chaos familiars and agree with orc boss that's what me back into the hobby top video
My selection :
80's -Tinboyz from the mekboyz inventions serie.
Love seeing old models painted by you guys. Makes me thing there is hope for me yet.
No love for the Mortis Engine?! That sculpt is amazing.
lmao! paused it on your Playing metal little snippit… that's hilariously awesome! I had no idea
WIsh someone did a series on every models history and re-sculpts and old sculpts.
I'll just throw in my comment of the best WH40K model (because it started me on my journey): The pewter Space Wolves Iron Priest I got in '93 while in England, originally packaged in the old blue card board bubble. Still love it to this day.
Great video, cool to see you guys having a chat.
I guess my picks would be:
80s - on screen beside Guy's choice, the Daemonhunter as he was listed there, I think it is Ordo Malleus Inquistor. Probably the style of mini that influenced my liking the Deathwing terminators/knights, in robes.
90s - Abaddon the Despoiler
00s - I really have no idea what came out in these years (though it is pretty certain I was still buying models)
10s - I think the late 10s had a great run of models making it a tough choice and I will cheat slightly and pick the Triumvirate of Ynnead, for 3 great models.
Great vid as always, love to see Guy representing for the UK! My choice for the 80s, the Jes Goodwin C23 Ogre range :)
that the one with the 'tim the enchanter' ogre?
Man. I can listen to this three for hours. They should do a podcast about... Well... Whatever!
The Eldar phantom titan for space marine (the 6mm game) is one I still love, and consider beautiful.
What about some of those really old eldar wraithlords that look like they're wearing bell bottoms?
Here is my list:
80s - Saturnine Terminator
90s- The Green Knight
00s- Watch Captain Artemis (54mm)
10s- Sister Superior Amalia Novena
20s- The new Zoat
Amalia Novena was so epic when it came out!
Really solid! I love the choices through the ages! This has reignited my hype for gargants :-D
My favorite models that I own from the last 5 decades are:
80's - plague marines and Nurgle Warriors from fantasy. They look like plague bearers popping out of armor
90's - the Eldar farseer pointing/ praetorian & Mordian guard. They scream 2nd edition to me!
00's - the Zacharius the Everliving. He got me into WHFB
10's - the solitaire harlequin/ Nagash
00's - Fabius Bile.
