Finally got my hands on this!! Decided my kids college funds weren't important after all, also the box it's come in is amazing seeing as i live in it now.
~The Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera is a supercharged performer, ready to capture images and video with stunning resolution and superior color get up to 50% discount right now shrsl.com/?~azn2
I'm sure this has been covered before in a comment somewhere but the level can be seen in the viewfinder. In custom functions you can set the m-fn button to show the level in the viewfinder.
Why do you always compare Canon 5D Mark iii to Nikon D800? This is a full review of this camera, right? Can you do a separate video if you really like to compare canon and nikon? Hmmmm.
the reason why i got the camera is because how many frames i can get. I usually take pictures of moving objects such as an eagle flying in the blue bright sky. the nikon d800 in my opinion are for objects that aren't moving as much or not at all such as modeling. But really i love both it's just what situations you use them in.
The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is a professional-grade full-frame DSLR that builds on the strengths of previous models to deliver an impressive performance..
I shot a wedding video recently with a 5D Mark III, 70-200 2.8 IS II,24-70 2.8L, and 50 1.2L and to me? it's very amazing but it really depends what you shoot, and the new ISO helped a lot in low light situation when I was filming in a dimmed place and your advice helped me! 5D Mark III> 5D Mark II
I have the 5D mark3 and i love it. I like the build quality and other features on it. I'm using a 24-70 f2.8 lens and the photo are fantastic. I'm very pleased i upgraded to the mark 3 from the mark 2.
Great review! I have no idea what he is talking about half the time but like watching these videos nonetheless. I like to see more sample shots and videos like in this one. Keep up the good work!
Am currently researching the very question of this camera in light of being a lifelong Nikon camera user. Much as I find your reviews consistently helpful, I therefore particularly appreciated the repeated references to the D800 in comparisons.
I really wish the Canon 5D Mark III had a swivel screen and Auto Focus in Video Mode. I have no idea how they think that it's reasonable not to have decent video functionality, or at least as good functionality as the 70 D
Natural Gallant Bodybuilding Like yours was, haha. The camera is for taking good photographs, not to have a swivel screen. This is for real photographers, not your average consumer who is just a casual user and only cares about stupid features and not the quality of their photos. Also, you say it has bad video, where is your proof Devinsupertramp uses this camera and takes phenomenal video with it.
5.56 Only you really should read my comment again. I didn't say that it has bad video. I SAID that is has bad functionality when it comes to self filming. This is why the swivel screen would be a great addition. It has great video, which is why I think it would also be great to make this aspect as functional as the cameras of 1/4 the cost! Why not have good video function and photo function. Seems like a win win to me, when Canon has already proven that they can do this, because they have done so on the 70D
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but the levelling mentioned are 1:40ish can be viewed within the viewfinder. It is done by a system of the AF point indicators lighting up to show which way the camera is off level.
If you have to wait another 30 seconds after a long exposure that probably means that you have noise reduction on, which takes another exposure of the same length, that is why you have to wait. Practically no camera will take that long to store the image :)
The horizontal and vertical meter CAN be viewed in the optical viewfinder! You just need to set the M-Fn button for that job. So you just hit M-Fn button and the level meter will be displayed in the VF.
Really impressive review, well presented and well thought out. Most impressed. It helped me decide that canon is still worth considering as an option over nikon.
i'm looking for a camera with a fast auto focus and great in low light situations i heard very nice things about this camera i mean 22.3 megapixels is great but i want a full frame camera that can do everything and i learn the camera
Personally I think Nikon sensors are marginally better . I also think that Canon glass is marginally better . Canon a bit easier to use . Nikon a bit stronger in still photography , Canon much stronger in videography . My opinion based on what I have checked out in blogs , reviews , etc etc etc , and photographic results that I have actually seen . Both are great camera companies . Both manufacturer solid DSLR's .
The live view switch was not at the bottom were the lock button is on the mk3... the on/off switch was there, and the live switch was in the top left corner on the mk2:)
You're showing the mirror, not the censor. But good review. However, as far as dynamic range, you can install a custom picture style like CineStyle. On the canon at least.
HEY MAN THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE SEEN ONE OF YOUR VIDS AND THEY ARE AMAZING YOU TOLD ME EVERYTHING I WANTED TOO KNOW ABOUT THIS CAMERA IN LOTS OF DETAIL . BY FAR THE BEST REVIEW I HAVE SEEN ON TH-cam ON THIS CAMERA =)
Straight to the point, snappy review. Excellent content covering all the basics you need to know to make an informed, unbiased opinion of the 5DIII. Thank you.
Canon Full Frame cameras can only use EF Lenses. While Crop Sensors can use both EF and EF-S lenses. :P However, you can mount EF-S lenses on a Full Frame Camera by using an extension tube. Its about 80 bucks but if the EF-S lens goes to a 10mm or 30mm focal length, you will get alot of vignetting. Any EF-S will work (like a EF-S 60mm Macro) as long as the focal length is above 30mm on the EF-S lens. You could also add more extension tubes to remove vignetting on 10mm EF-S lens.
You think the video on Canon is better than the Nikon even though it doesn't auto focus? I record sewing videos, so there is movement in my videos & I cannot manually adjust the focus.
Just picked up a Mark III, from B&H.WOW!! replaced my Old 30D. It came with a extreme SD card, should I purchase a Compact Flash card as well?? Or put the cash towards another lense. Thanks, Dave
I wish Canon really pimped out there Powershot range with some of these features because i love the better image quality and features that DSLR's have like HDR and RAW but i want something that i can easily drag around with me
no pop up flash....anyone buying this camera wont miss it, I just upgraded from mk2 to this camera...its awesome, focusing system is so much better and the high iso
Great Review, appreciated !! Like WOW dude how many takes did it take you to record your video and who was holding your cue cards,, thank for taking the time to review for all us techies.
I really love the detailed reviews that Mike does, but I really didnt like the fact that he just compared it to the Nikon equivalent. It was a Canon review, not a Canon vs Nikon. BUT still detailed. Great review.
well it would be used in the long run of course, yes its expensive i know but i really do take an interest in this kind of stuff. The bad thing about saving for this camera is that by time I end up buying it, there will be something better. But I will get this camera. Eventually
excellent review and I have heard many. I know at the time of your review on the 5DM3 there was just the D800 but what is your feeling about the D610 and D750?
I dream of having one of this but here in Brazil is more expensive than what I earn not of , but one day you know I can not have a this or a simpler at least to start taking pictures out there .... worth by this video I was drooling , good video.
why do you need them to do your reviews, you are very good at what you do, so do it on your own, only thing I wonder about this review is, what camera you would want yourself, I went back and forth for months trying to decide between the mark lll and D800, and owning glass wasn't part of my thought process, but I was a Nikon shooter, but I ended up buying the 5D mark lll, but now I have this new learning curve getting used to Canon, and I need more lenses, but the new 70/200 IS ll is amazing
Surely you can see what he means though... It's why mirrorless SLR's are appearing as such an attractive proposition. I know a great many people who don't wan't to carry a chunky D800 or 5D around.
What's the difference between a high-end point and shoot and a single-lens reflex cameras? Is it always more worth it for image quality to get an SLR even if they're around the same price?
My goodness: Sounds life you have to have a degree to operate one. The Pentax K1 full frame is such an easier camera to operate and a fraction of the price as well:
That'sthe problem! There'a always 'something better', but the 5D Mark III will always be a great camera. You don't always have to have the best. But I hope you do get it. I've only had mine for a few days but I love it. I am selling my 7D to pay for it. The 7D is a great camera, I would recommend it as long as you put a good lens on the front of it. Good luck with whatever you buy.
I was wondering when you will do the review for G15 and I realize I didn't get to see your review for a while. I was really disappointed. Your review on G12 is simply amazing. I guess I will see you somewhere with amazing review.
one question, i have the 6d with lenses EF 24mmf/1.4L II USM, EF 16-35mmf/2.8 II L USM, EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF 24-70mmf/2.8L USM II , found a great deal for 5dmark3 is it worth it to change it?
This isn't your typical point and shoot. Full frame camera's like the 5D will perform well in low light. Professionals wouldn't use a built in flash even if it was offered, like the Canon 7D or 60D. Built in flashes do not diffuse light evenly like a proper external flash or strobe.
I had a buddy to preferred the panasonic GH3 over the mk III for video, if that means anything to you. Seemed like similar iso performance, and significantly cheaper.
Excuse me? You can't use the leveling in the viewfinder with the 5d mkiii? You must have not been through the menu on the camera to enable it. Maybe double check before making a review?
If you can use it to the best of it's ability or feel really dedicated to photography, then sure! But it's a very pricy camera. If you want to upgrade to something, but don't want to get rid of EF-S lenses (if that's what you have), just go for the 7D! But it's what you're comfortable with as well. I'm 16 and own a 5D mark III (and yes I mean I own it). It's an absolutely amazing camera and just completely surprised me upgrading from the 60D
Are you sure you're not talking about micro 4/3 and other mirror-less cameras? I've never heard of a point and shoot surpassing $300. As for mirror-less cameras, if you're shooting all manual focus, then it's worth it, but if you need autofocus I suggest getting a DSLR. Reason being is that there still aren't that many lenses for micro 4/3, so you'd want to buy an adapter, which would take away all electronic functions in the lens. Also, if it's the same price, think about whether you need size.
so? It's still very informative and mainly a review... I like that he uses similar cameras on the market to remind the viewer of how that feature stacks up!
Alright nice video! my question is i need a camera really nice for videos and also for photos? I have a Canon eos t3 and Im not really happy with the result in video mode.
One thing where the M2 is better than the M3 is the battery door. The pin assembly is all metal in the M2, while the M3 is all plastic. On my old M2 I never needed to replace the battery door, but the I have already replaced two times the battery door on my M3.
I'm not sure if I'll get a response here, but I'm looking to start photographing. Nature, close-ups and the likes of that. I however am incredibly inexperienced regarding everything. I wonder if somebody could recommend me something to read, and a particular camera to start with?
jodawgsup Hi , for a strt , it's better you get an entry level DSLR as it won't confuse you much. You have plenty of choice , few models I may recommend : Nikon D3300 (my personal favorite) , Nikon D5300 /5500 or Canon T4i (aka 650D) or T3i, . However the most important part is not the camera you buy , but how you use, it's all about skills! Overtime as your skills grow you will know better what other accessories to get . There are plenty of book from which you can learn from or videos , you can buy MichaelTheMentor crash courses and learn from them , they are very well presented ! All the best !
if you're planning on shooting things up close , a 50 mm prime lens would be good as it has a high aperture perfect for close ups.its only 120 $.u ll probably get a 18 - 55 mm kit lens as well and if you wish to shoot long distance you just need to buy a 55-250 mm lens .
Landry Sibomana Thanks a lot, I'll continue to look around for a bit because I'm not quite in the financial position to buy such camera's right now. But thank you for the long answer, I really appreciate it. pkkthetiger As to you for your explanation regarding lenses. Thanks
jodawgsup I'am a beginner photographer, I got this camera last week that i bought from plus.google.com/108640713028796812078/posts/8EKmvWxw8Ao ($300 Off + free shipping) it works good anyway it worth buying
As you'll know, it's a VERY expensive camera, so unless you have rich parents, it's gonna be a lot of saving. But I just got one and it feels great in the hands and is so responsive. Do you really need a camera this advanced at 14 years of age?
I'm not a pro and I don't know how to use all those buttons but I do need to take really nice pictures of some designs that I'm working on... What would you recommend
i have your same age and yes i do LOVE photography and yes its worth it because now that i have started like my own business its really worth it i have a 600D or T3i and yes now i need and upgrade like you but yes its worth saving for it
Great review. You managed to cover quite a lot. One small extremely minor detail though, the built in microphone only records monaural sound. Sorry to hear the reviewer was let go. I think you got good skills for reviewing though.
Actually, I do think a pop up flash would be nice if you wanted to trigger some other flashes. Granted I agree with you though the pop-up flash is horrible and too harsh. The only time I use mine is when I am triggering other flashes on my D800E.
Finally got my hands on this!! Decided my kids college funds weren't important after all, also the box it's come in is amazing seeing as i live in it now.

Perhaps the reason you didn't have to wait after the long-exposure shot is because you had long exposure noise reduction set to off?
i just want to cry now... lol i really want to buy 5d mark iii
great review
You can get the 5d mark3 on sale now on www.dslrcam.net/new/canoneos5d with the lens kit.

Why the hell would they fire you? That was the most detailed review I've ever seen and I loved it.

5.56 Only such an intelligent comment.

Little cosmetic features like a flip out screen are for casual photographers, and not for serious phtographers

I don't have the money for either cameras but I still liked the review :) Just enough information without being boring.

Oh, I guess I need to do some more research. I was referring to cameras like the Panasonic Lumix vs something like Canon T3i.
You're showing the mirror, not the censor. But good review. However, as far as dynamic range, you can install a custom picture style like CineStyle. On the canon at least.
Great review! To the point, objective and informative. Touches on all the points you want to know, quickly.
Should I get the 5d mk3 now or wait for the 6d mk2? I plan on shooting portraits, low light stuff, real estate and maybe some street photography.
Straight to the point, snappy review. Excellent content covering all the basics you need to know to make an informed, unbiased opinion of the 5DIII. Thank you.
own a 5D Mark III and I use the leveler in the view finder all the time....
Canon Full Frame cameras can only use EF Lenses. While Crop Sensors can use both EF and EF-S lenses. :P

For the price could you get a 4k camera instead? Maybe with a high fps option?
+Camroc37 well if that's what you are looking for, you could also just get a Iphone 6s..
Ronald K true, not 3,000 fps though.
You think the video on Canon is better than the Nikon even though it doesn't auto focus? I record sewing videos, so there is movement in my videos & I cannot manually adjust the focus.
Best Review. Some people don't know that you need to refer to something else to clearly get the spec about a gagdet.
Just picked up a Mark III, from B&H.WOW!! replaced my Old 30D.
It came with a extreme SD card, should I purchase a Compact Flash card as well??
Or put the cash towards another lense.
Thanks,
Dave
thank you for your review, I like to sit back with my camera in my hand and enjoy you in the comforts of my own home
Coming up soon!
I wish Canon really pimped out there Powershot range with some of these features because i love the better image quality and features that DSLR's have like HDR and RAW but i want something that i can easily drag around with me
wondering where mike went, kept looking for infosync. heard that voice and was like 'yessss, now this will be a good review'
if your going to talk so much about the Nikon ,just bloody do nikon reviews,no comparisions
no pop up flash....anyone buying this camera wont miss it, I just upgraded from mk2 to this camera...its awesome, focusing system is so much better and the high iso
Great Review, appreciated !! Like WOW dude how many takes did it take you to record your video and who was holding your cue cards,, thank for taking the time to review for all us techies.
medium format is not about the mp count,it's about the sensor size......
Depends on budget for the most part. Although j would say wait till August-ish. Rumors have been pointing to a 7D mk2
7d mk2 is better than this one in your opinion?
Depends on your use for the camera. The 7d does beat the 5d in autofocus performance. Also again, budget
I really love the detailed reviews that Mike does, but I really didnt like the fact that he just compared it to the Nikon equivalent. It was a Canon review, not a Canon vs Nikon. BUT still detailed. Great review.
Mike Perlman dose best camera reviews if you think they should bring him back thumb this up or should he do them on his own channel?
well it would be used in the long run of course, yes its expensive i know but i really do take an interest in this kind of stuff. The bad thing about saving for this camera is that by time I end up buying it, there will be something better. But I will get this camera. Eventually

As usual, a through review by this gentleman; possibly the best camera reviewer on TH-cam.
What's the difference between a high-end point and shoot and a single-lens reflex cameras? Is it always more worth it for image quality to get an SLR even if they're around the same price?

5D MRK III + Snap with vintage film lenses with adapter.
Hello CANON EOS 5D Mark III which cheaper product you offer with the same features ?
It lacks a pop up flash because it is for pros just starting out that have other external flashes.
Best review i've seen so far, with useful comparisons! Thanks
btw u can get lvl in your view finder to see if ur horizontal or not.
if you're just now trying to decide to get into canon or nikon I'm not sure you want your first dslr to be a mkIII or D800
Nice review. But the results of the integrated HDR mode do not seem to be as nice as you tell.
so glad ive stuck with canon and upgraded to the mark iii! great review thanks so much
I was wondering when you will do the review for G15 and I realize I didn't get to see your review for a while. I was really disappointed. Your review on G12 is simply amazing. I guess I will see you somewhere with amazing review.
evergreen review... found this camera in a drawer, helpful... also 1million views....epic!
one question, i have the 6d with lenses EF 24mmf/1.4L II USM, EF 16-35mmf/2.8 II L USM, EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF 24-70mmf/2.8L USM II , found a great deal for 5dmark3 is it worth it to change it?
This isn't your typical point and shoot.
Full frame camera's like the 5D will perform well in low light.
Professionals wouldn't use a built in flash even if it was offered, like the Canon 7D or 60D.
Built in flashes do not diffuse light evenly like a proper external flash or strobe.
There is an electronic level indicator in the viewfinder
So, more than a year on, which cameras are successors to the 5DMk3 and D800?
I had a buddy to preferred the panasonic GH3 over the mk III for video, if that means anything to you. Seemed like similar iso performance, and significantly cheaper.
1dx .. 1d c ... 1d mark 4 ... c100 ... c300 ... c500...
Excuse me? You can't use the leveling in the viewfinder with the 5d mkiii? You must have not been through the menu on the camera to enable it. Maybe double check before making a review?
If you can use it to the best of it's ability or feel really dedicated to photography, then sure! But it's a very pricy camera.
A professional told us to skip buying a mirrorless and get a 5D. Best bang for Buck out there
I only compared it a few times, and any big review like this needs comparison when there's a direct competitor of this magnitude.
Thanks for you're review I'm going with the Nikon d800
Alright nice video! my question is i need a camera really nice for videos and also for photos? I have a Canon eos t3 and Im not really happy with the result in video mode.
I'm from Tanzania uncle Rico, how much will it cost,& what is best video camera between 5dmarc 3 & cannon c100
GREAT VIDEO. I like the objective take on Canon/Nikon.
For me and making documentaries. A 5D mk 3 and a Juice 333.
One thing where the M2 is better than the M3 is the battery door. The pin assembly is all metal in the M2, while the M3 is all plastic. On my old M2 I never needed to replace the battery door, but the I have already replaced two times the battery door on my M3.
thats actually a very good video!! thx you..just purchased mark 3 today ..
you did a great job, speed and summary was perfect
i love those cam reviews!!!!
Thanks Uncle Rico.
what camera would you recommend for like 800€ ?
Video mode should be good
As you'll know, it's a VERY expensive camera, so unless you have rich parents, it's gonna be a lot of saving.
3:11 oh yeah! Altec Lansing IMT810 BoomBox
Actually, I do think a pop up flash would be nice if you wanted to trigger some other flashes. Granted I agree with you though the pop-up flash is horrible and too harsh. The only time I use mine is when I am triggering other flashes on my D800E.
There FujiFilm x100 is about 1 grand and the Leica x2 is over 2 grand. Those are both point and shoot cameras.
Verry amazing!!! I like it early but how much canone 5d mark 3??& canone 7d mark 3/4
