      Whole steps (skip 1 fret) between everything except B & E.

  • @egbun
    @egbun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +131

    Simpler method:
    You already know the open string notes EADGBE
    You already know the notes of frets 1-3 from beginning guitar lessons (C, E, F etc)
    You already know the notes of the fifth fret, from tuning the guitar
    You already know the notes of the twelfth fret (same as the open string notes)
    Now learn the notes of the tenth fret - it’s just one note less than the twelfth fret
    That leaves only the frets between five and ten to learn. Here comes the magic trick:
    Start on sixth string, 5th fret, and just follow alphabetical order: A BC (5, 7,8 fret) (you know there’s only a half-step between B and C)
    Continue the alphabet on fifth string, 5th fret: D EF (also 5, 7,8 fret) (you know there’s only a half step between E and F)
    Continue the alphabet on the fourth string, 5th fret G, A, B (5, 7, 9 fret - whole steps)
    Continue the alphabet on the third string, 5th fret C, D, E (5, 7, 9 fret - whole steps)
    Now the oddball - second string is tuned lower, so to compensate, continue the alphabet on the 6th (not 5th) fret F, G (6, 8 fret - whole step)
    Now on the first string, return to the normal pattern: Continue alphabet on 5th fret A, B,C (identical to sixth string)
    Summary - why this method is easy: You’re just counting the alphabet as you move down the fifth position (except for second string)

    It makes more sense if you learn the note circle first and then apply it to what he’s teaching. Quick tip-> drawing the notes circle many times will help you memorize the notes and gaps in between B&C and E&F. Then try to play it on the guitar and it’ll all fall into place

  • @Texy88
    @Texy88 11 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    The only real inaccuracy with this is that it is more accurate to say that there are no sharp notes or flat notes between E and F or between B and C. To say that E♯ and B♯ "don't exist" is inaccurate because they DO exist (as do C♭ and F♭).
    Just as there are times that it is more appropriate to use, for example, G♭ than F♯, so there are going to be times when it is more appropriate to use an E♯ instead of an F, or a B♯ instead of a C.
    Otherwise, this is a good tutorial.

    • @paulg444
      @paulg444 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      and anyone learning music for the first time will immediately say, why didnt you just use the first 12 letters of the alphabet instead ?.. since you have equal temperament tuning there is no need to add this unnecessary complexity in the notation. This is part of the reason why so many people without a great or gifted ear for music give up on understanding it. The notation is horribly cumbersome.

    • @Texy88
      @Texy88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not every instrument does use equal temperament, so that wouldn't work.

      It can be any of them. The string just gives you the starting note, then you hold the fret to go up or down from that starting note. As he shows the closer to you that you go on the fretboard, the higher the note is. So if you are playing 6th string while holding fret 12, or 5th string while holding fret 7, they are the same note. And the reason the 5th string only needs fret 7 not 12 is because the 5th string starts higher up in the octave.

    Basic music theory:
    Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do
    C D E F G A B C
    E# & B# technically do not exist because E -> F & B -> C are where the naturally occuring half notes are found. That’s why you don’t skip a fret between E & F and B & C. The top string should sound like an E that’s why it’s the E string.

    I enjoyed your lesson. I have background in orchestra and piano, so want only to learn to relate notes on sheet music with guitar fretboard.ie which C do I play? Taking Leonard method and they taught me C is on B string first fret/ other references show low e as way below treble clef lines. Therefore we need printouts of notes with fretboard, a pdf we could download for reference. could you please provide this. I hate to wade through a lesson with 30 or more sessions and they are still teaching rhythm, rules, notations etc. I need to know the notes. and which fret below or above the octave Middle C on piano or in trumpet etc.Thanks i hope i made this clear. No one is providing this to us peons. So far I am learning to play notes from scales etc but am not below egbdf so use guitarists using tab and chords use low e and a all the time. We need to know notation if going to play Major Scales with nothing but sheet music. It has helped me find other places on fretboard besides e and a string where i can find c notes, f notes etc. I want to keep learning to read music notation.
    i am a beginner at barre chords now. My chord changes are not up to snuff so got to let finger and wrist rest so took up note reading. Well done. But please ad downloadable pdfs of your diagrams. Thanks.

      You can use either string, that's the point of guitar. Just learn normal notes

    So I have a question: you play the notes exactly on the metal part of the fret. I am self thought and a lot of people play in between the metal parts. What is correct way and/or gives more sound and quality?

    • @Violetacampuz
      @Violetacampuz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You play them as close as you can to the metal while staying on the fret of a designated note. Try not to press on top of the metal bc that will kill the sound. it makes it less painful on your fingers and you’ll get them to sound good in no time

    The higher notes are in the way of other notes. So how do you know which one to play?

    I can read a tab sheet just fine. Once I look at sheet music I understand the concept of whole notes to eighth notes. However I can’t seem to grasp which notes specifically to play even with these videos... with college I don’t have the money to afford a teacher atm. Any tips??

    How higher octaves notes are represented in staff or in sheet music ?
    In guitar ! is there any representation for higher notes and octaves apart from ledger lines?

    This video sounds like it has a lot of good info, but you have to break down the transitions easier. Realize people who are learning don't know these notes and need to look at both hands placements and process what note it is before you move your hands or start talking about something else. Maybe do one video for each note at a time.

    Hi! I have a question and I would appreciated if anyone could help me. When you already know the notes on your guitar and you're playing a song on sol-fa notation, how can you choose the right note for it? For example, on guitar strings you have different Mi (strings one, six,and more) , but in a specific song which one will you have to play? Is there any trick for that?
    Thank you and good tutorial!

      This is why I can't play sheet music, I struggle with it too. Basically I heard in some places its written, but most of the time you either figure out the key or randomly choose one that goes with the fingering and sounds right.

    WHAT CONFUSED ME IN GUITAR when writing music with piano in the staff for example you have the piano C chord C E G but in the guitar the c chord you have CEGCE when playing the chord , and when we are speaking about voice leading rules it's prohibited to overlap the melody and chords in the same register and of course also avoid the consecutive fifth and octaves and my question is how can i voice the guitar chord to not overlap with the melody if someone can help me

    I found out something really critical that you really had to fucking strum your guitar or else it doesn’t play the note I was so mad that I wasn’t playing it right now I realized that you really have to strum it apparently damn
