I will have a think about how best to present this! It can be tricky as everything from the way you play to the effects pedals/amps and style of music all affect tone.... leave it with me👌

    sam, i just want to make a comment that many of us believe, but didn’t take the time to say so. You’re contribution to all guitar musicians from beginner on up, has been generous. It takes a kind hearted and humble person to take the time to share the knowledge, that at one time in your life, took many years and finances to learn yourself, and now, you share to the public that knowledge. Yes, there are many tubers that also share their knowledge, but none so authentic and simple to learn as you have displayed. I myself, and I’m sure I speak for many others, Thank You with all my heart. Why am I taking this time to comment? I have been playing for 40 yrs on and off, not as a professional but as a hobby and for enjoyment. I lost interest many times because I couldn’t put it all together. As many, I couldn’t afford lessons and work full time to support a family, still at 62 yrs old. After watching your video lessons and theory sessions, I haven’t put my guitar down every night after work. You single handedly peaked my enthusiasm. You wouldn’t believe the gear I purchased on behalf of your contribution. Tell the suppliers what I said and maybe they will supply your needs. If you would like some proof, I can share receipts and suppliers. One being a major supplier, Sweetwater. I hope this comment reaches you and once again sincerely, Thank You!!!😊

    The only way to memorise the notes on the guitar is to sit and literally memorise the notes on the guitar. It will takes a long time. But once you’ve got it down, and once you pair it with a knowledge of what notes are contained in scales and chords it will open the door into whole new musical landscape.

    • @helohnukwa
      @helohnukwa 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, of course at some point you need to learn it all to know the notes immediately. But starting with a skeleton as anchors is a great way to make this easier. You can also use shapes of intervalls, scales, chords or finger positions and so on to understand your fretboard better. A further step could also be to know the real notes behind the fretboard so that you can read sheet music. But you are absolutely right that it is all a lot of practice and focused learning.

    In decades of playing guitar, no-one ever mentioned the fret markers and their function (beyond that they exist)... but this is a sneaky way to help get around the fretboard...
    With a knowledge of scales and the 'Circle of 5ths" (4ths), it's easy to define the dots in terms of the open string being the 1st of an interval -- the 1st dot is a flattened 3rd. The 2nd dot is a 4th, the 3rd dot is a 5th. The 4th dot is a flattened 7th... and the 'double-dot' is an octave.
    I'm off to dump all this onto some flash cards and drill it all... Fanx! for the inspiration :)

  • @SketchEtcher

    I just memorized FGAB on the low E and then CDE on the A string, and continued to do the same for the remaining strings with FGAB and CDE. It’s an easy to remember pattern because there are no half steps. Whenever you get to a half step, jump to the next string.

    • @SketchEtcher
      @SketchEtcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Guitar-and music itself-is a very pattern based system. I think of each pattern is a different “angle” to view the notes. Different people will learn from different angles. There is no one way to learn anything in music!
      The most important tip of all is that if you hit a block and feel frustrated because you feel like you can’t grasp something, then stop, take a break, and try looking at it from a different perspective instead of giving up. In this example, if FGAB/CDE doesn’t work for you, and you can’t memorize what is on the dots, then maybe try memorizing the notes horizontally, or carve it up in whatever way it seems to “speak” to you. Make your own system, and in the process you’ll learn a lot more than you would from wrote memorization anyways.

    Been playing for approx 40 years and never looked at it this way. That made a lot of sense especially most of us guitarist memorise the low E, A and D strings anyway because we all venture into playing a bit of bass which therefore leaves us only th G and B string to memories. Loved your approach.

    I didn’t think how important it really is when I first started. But after playing for almost 10 years, I really didn’t get that good. So in 1983 I started reading music and started learning all of those little notes on the fingerboard of a guitar slowly, but surely, my guitar playing took a turn for the better. And I think it is excellent that you teach this method. Some people may not get it in five minutes. I know I didn’t but just the same. I learned it. Glad I did sometimes it’s good to take a refresher course. I think no matter how long we apply or how many years we still like to learn new things I know I do. Thanks for the video and thanks for encouraging others to do what you’re teaching. Have a great day. Love your video.👍🏼😁😎❤️🎸☮️

    I played piano for 10 years prior to guitar, so when I picked up the guitar I saw no relation between the dots being musical like the white and black keys. At first I didn’t care much about theory, because it never helped me write music on the piano. I felt like a trained monkey, plop classical sheet music in front of me and I could play it, but it was like reading someone else’s book, never writing your own. Guitar opened up the world of songwriting to me. In more recent years I’ve tried to memorize the fret board, but it always takes me a beat find the notes. It’s just never been completely wrote memory for me. This is by far the most brilliant lesson I’ve seen on this in 30 years! Thank you.

    I'm primarily a keyboardist, but I work at the guitar every day. I'll get to my point: I'm utterly amazed at how many reasonably serious guitar players never knew that the dots were anything but random decoration or whatever! You'd think that their placement on the thin side of the neck that you look down on when standing or looking down on the guitar would be a clue that they're markers or reference points. Wow! I don't mean it disrespectfully, but it's just odd to me that YEARS could pass & one could never even hear it mentioned during one''s learning process. It must be quite the surprise!

      As long as it clicks eventually I guess! this is the way I have always viewed/taught it and it works 100% regardless of age or ability and there are a few other reasons why the fret markers are placed in those specific areas of the neck but that's for another video!

    Brilliantly simple and quick way to learn and find notes on the guitar. I’ve always stuttered when trying to find or quickly identify individual notes on specific strings. This makes it so much easier to find any specific note on any specific string. A well done video. Many thanks

    Been playing guitar for a loooong time, not really bothering about knowing exactly the name of each note (and I have perfect pitch and theory knowledge) until I heard several good players / teachers underline how important that was. And today, looking for the fastest way to memorize them, I just realized thanks to your video, I mean realized RIGHT NOW that the 4 dots above the 12th were the same as below. It's so obvious and yet I never really just thought about it. You just made my guitar life (the only real life) simpler, so THANKS MATE!!

    another point of course that helps too, is that, the note on every 5th fret is the next string up! Low E 5th fret is A, A 5th fret is D, D 5th fret is G (the one exception is G string is 4th fret to make B, then last is B 5th fret is high E.

      I actually find it's frequently a culture thing together with the instrument in use. As an Aussie, we mostly talk about tone/semitone (at least, when I've been playing keyboards, sometimes with guitar/bass); USA-folks (at least) often talk about step/half-step in most every instrument (I think)... :)

    This is helpful. So is learning octave intervals. That way, say you are on a thin string, like B, you can trace backwards down the neck towards the nut to find the nearest octave- do it more then once until you land on a string/note you recognize.
    Another good technique that is more usable is to memorize all the notes in your chords starting with C Major so learn where every CE&G is. The I, 3, 5. Now you really have something- more then just note memorization, you will be able to access those notes when that chord comes around. Next, learn C# Major, then D Major chord and so on. When yoiu are done, repeat but learn minor- simply flat the 3rd. Strive to learn one chord a week- 3 notes, every fretted location. In theory, it should take you 24 weeks but it will go much faster then that.
    So, at a glance, this technique is nice but has limited application IMHO.
