Dr. John Bergsma, along with Drs. Brant Pitre and Michael Barber, are the great professors of catholic theology today in the US, also let's not forget the teacher of them all Dr. Scott Hahn, a true apostle of christian faith in our century.

@@patricpeters7911 Don't care about this guy. He had post his "protest" against the real presence here in the commentaries, but he deleted it as soon as posted a brief verse, which apparently he didn't know. He's just a coward boy who never took a Bible in his hands.
@@CatholicDefender-bp7my you are being weird and I don't know what you are getting at. You said they have faith and I said it's not in a saving way. There is nothing controversial amongst Catholics about this.
I'm not Protestant, but I don't think Dr. Bergsma did justice to the Protestant understanding of "the works of the Law." They certainly believed The Law includes the Ten Commandments, the Moral Law. They taught that a perfect keeping of The Comnandments cannot cleanse us from sin, and reconcile us to God. Only the blood of the morally spotless Lamb of God can cleanse and save us. Perfect obedience to The Moral Law can never "merit" God's forgiveness of our past sins; which forgiveness comes only by the Atonement of Christ, for our sins, and its personal appropriation by faith; i.e. believing that Jesus died for us, and atoned for our sins, so that we could be forgiven & reconciled to God. Therefore, ìf a perfect keeping of The Moral Law can't earn for us forgiveness of ALL our past sins, then neither can a perfect keeping of ALL the Sacraments and Canon Laws of the Church. Our faith must not be placed in any type of works by us, but only in the power of The Blood of Christ, to remove the barrier(s) that separate us from God. That is the fairest presentation of the Protestant theology, as far as I know.

I don't think John the Baptist was "kicked out" of the Essenes. I think it you are right that he had a higher calling to prepare the way for his cousin, Jesus. I'm sure their mothers were aware and confided to them their unusual, Divine conception and purpose.
I find it interesting that Protestants say that it is by faith alone and not by anything that we could do… however, to them baptism does nothing and should be delayed until the person decides to do it. Seems that the decision to be baptized is placing all the Grace on the person instead of what Jesus can do. It is Jesus who cleanses so it seems that we would get baptized ASAP. Baptism is like the OT circumcision and the of the presentation.
Let me get this straight: the "believer's baptism" teaches that one must be old enough to know that baptism does nothing before consenting to it? Beam me up, Scotty!
When Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple to the Priests, that was to me a prompt for parents to bring their babies and present them to the Priests for baptism. It is quite simple, yet people complicate it.
@@catholicprodigal Baptismal regeneration! done by God's grace working THROUGH water and an open heart. The "believer's baptism" is a work and we are not saved by works.
Hey blessings, I came on your channel from Pints With Aquinas. Your channel is great and awesome material. LITTLE SUGGESTION could you put your camera little far and have live discussions not online.
According to Blessed Ann Emmerich, both Mary and Joseph belonged to the Essenes as did their families. They all were praying for the soon coming of the Messiah. Mary had promised herself to God, before the angel brought to her God's request. Joseph likewise had vowed himself to God. Neither had wanted to marry, but God wanted them to have the special task of raising Jesus. They were indeed a "Holy Family."
On the Eucharist. Bearing in mind the Melchizedek scroll at Qumran, what bearing might the bread and wine that Melchizedek brought out to Abraham have on the Essene Eucharist?
Dr Bergsma reading the Dead Sea Scrolls, is there a study guise of some sorts? My wife is just starting to read it and wants to do a study on it and can really use some help
If people who read the scriptures and say that it is all truth and powerful and says that Jesus Christ is the son of God the Father but deny that of what Jesus said about eating his body and drinking his blood and claim profess and proclaim that it’s just symbolic then these people are calling Jesus Christ a liar and a teacher of idolatry let those who have the understanding understand with the spirit of the eyes and ears and the spirit of the mind of what I’ve just said?
😂😂😂 haha. You fell for that too? You didn't get Jesus's sense of humor. He had a great sense of humor. Probably you should read the rest of the chapter 😂🎉
@@survivorisland: I read the rest of the chapter; the rest of the Book, as a matter of fact. Go ahead and laugh if you like, but Jesus was serious. I'm so glad to be Catholic!
One thing that always fascinated me about all this pre-christian thought was the approach of Mormons. It seems that protestants, in their choosing to forego history, creates the impression that the church is just some spontaneous thing that suddenly comes on the scene in 30 AD. Mormons, with the book of Mormon meant to be a kind of preservation of 1st temple thought, seem to go way too hard in trying to prove how far back certain doctrines go. For example, the use of synagogues seems to be essentially anachronistic according to how early the BoM places them in history. Though I don't see Mormonism as from God, the confidence of their scriptures to place so many things seemingly before their reasonable entrance into Jewish thought stirs up a kind of exuberance in me. How early can the catholic church go in her claims using extra-biblical sources? What about the Samaritan's ? The rabbis and sages preceding the new testament? What about the Jewish communities that didn't move back after the building of the 2nd temple? I wonder, if we could draw things from Zoroastrianism. It would be so cool to find a book or something that talks about monasticism or something in like 500 b.c. !
Your comment reminds me of a tab I have open with a video title: Purifying our Internal Senses: _Imagination_ and Memory. Obvioiusly, it is not about things supposedly hidden (hint) in the past or otherwise (cf gnostic heresy). We are prideful beyond salvation in ourselves, may Christ deliver us unto humility and save us. May we surrender to His will and cast away all that makes us stumble, even if so dear to us as our own eyes! Jesus orders us to renounce even our family for the sake of the Kingdom, and to renounce our very selves in order to follow Him? Now, for some reason, the Catechism does mention pagan worship practices and draws parallel between them and true worship. But in no way does it affirm paganism in doing so. The true faith that may or may not be emulated by pagans is available to you in its completeness in the Catholic church. There exists nothing of value that does not come from God, above all the spiritual. If I may humbly suggest, seek peace instead of excitement. I value it over excitement not in eternity only (and eternity should be our focus), but also in this world. See this short video please: /watch?v=ZkyKKpwntwI (this one is a great rule for discernment by padre Pio, that is related to the last things I said)
I love to find and pick out pre-Christian anticipations of Jesus and Christianity. The early Christians found them everywhere: they said that Virgil's Fourth Eclogue was about Jesus instead of Augustus Caesar, one of the Greek oracles made a famous prophecy that turned out to be an acrostic containing the Name & roles of Jesus, and Tertullian pointed out that idols were usually supported by metal rebar in the shape of a cross. And as we expand out into the world and try to evangelize other societies with their religions and customs, we can look for more of these.
I wouldn’t say that John the Baptist had a tremendous influence over Jesus, I would say that the whole scenario was pre-orchestrated by God because He wanted it to work out that way.
Now I’m very puzzled about baptism or any other sacraments that are administered by the Catholic Church, and what I mean by that is can any person have the impowerment to administer sacraments just because they read the scriptures and are a member of the Catholic Church and are there for impowered to do that because they are just a member and not an ordained Bishop or Priest in the Catholic Church?
No. All sacraments are “normally” administered by ordained clergy only. Baptism may be administered by any confirmed Catholic but that is not normal and not advised. There are some sacraments only administered by bishops, some by bishops and priests, some by bishops, priests and deacons.
@@srich7503 thank you for your reply I really appreciate it,but I must say this that I’m still puzzled about baptism, and why I’m puzzled about it is because to me it seems clearer than daylight that Jesus only had his Apostles baptize whom Jesus gave full authority and Impowerment to them as well as John the Baptist. It’s just the way I understand it as a catholic if I’m wrong please do enlighten me thank you +++
@@johnchung6777 yes that is correct. Jesus only baptized His apostles. Do you think only apostles were meant to be baptized? After the resurrection, the books of Acts records (16:15 16:33; 18:8) whole households or families being baptized. Now if the idea for you about baptism is a cognitive decisive on the baptized ONLY then that is a different issue, which in Catholicism is dealt with in the sacrament of Confirmation. Many Protestants conflate the 2 from their perspectives and not from our perspective. It helps to understand our purposes of each sacraments and not conflate your understanding of your baptism on our infants. Our Baptism on our infants is not the same as what you expect.
@@srich7503 thanks for your reply, but I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m saying about who has the authority to baptize only for I as a sheep or ordinary member in the Catholic Church am not empowered by or received the sacrament of holy orders as a priest or bishop in the Catholic Church receives and it’s obvious that they are empowered to administer all seven sacraments, again if I’m wrong please explain that to me thanks

The Israelites were the first phase of Catholicism and their religion has zero in common with )udaism which started after the Romans sacked and razed Jerusalem.
Took 70 years for the Romans to realize the people calling themselves "Jews" were imposters with fake birth certificates in Herods Temple. Because they were actually Arabic. Israelites had already spread around the west east north and south after captivity in Babylon.
It's amazing to me that American Evangelicals, who profess to be Christian, can believe that modern practitioners of Judaism are still the "chosen people" and hold Christian zionist beliefs. We know now due to DNA that most Jews aren't, especially Ashkenazi, aren't descended from the original Israelites. The Romans didn't exile the entire population of Israel after 70 AD, nor did the Muslims, many converted to Christianity or Islam and many continued to practice Judaism, while some migrated. Christian zionism falls apart after one understands the history of the population of Palestine. It already doesn't make sense from a purely Christian perspective.
Satan was at his diabolical best when he first convinced Protestants the Holy Eucharist was not the real body and blood of Christ and install nothing more than a suggestion they occasionally observe the Lord's Supper as a remembrance.
What do you make of all the graves of women that have now been found, including in the main cemetery? Maybe a celibate sisterhood there? And honestly how different was it from a modern Yeshivah where it is all males studying Torah. But now there are also women' s yeshivas.
Of course there are Jewish routes to Catholicism. The Old Testament emerged directly from Judaism as were the teachings and faith of Jesus Christ which led to the Gospels and the New Testament..

Jesus said that among those born of woman there was none greater than John the Baptiste. This doesn't seem consistent with the Essenes kicking him out.
Could the Essene suggestion that water from a purified pitcher should not be poured into a contaminated cup be a foreshadowing of the words of Jesus that you shouldn't put pearls before swine?
catholic baptism doesn't save anyone. salvation is not through the catholic church's man-made false doctrines, rituals, traditions, sacraments, dogmas, ect. the bible is very clear that salvation is by faith, through grace, in Jesus Christ alone. faith comes from God the Father alone. neither salvation or faith comes from the false roman catholic church, which tries to use things like the eucharist/mass as a means of attaining both salvation and faith. the eucharist/mass is a wicked re-sacrifice of Christ, defying that Christ's death on the cross, was the final and complete sacrifice.
@@manuelpompa-u5e You claimed: catholic baptism doesn't save anyone. God claims: Mark 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” John 3:5 “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’” (cf. 3:3: “unless a man is born again …”) Acts 2:38-41 “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him.’ And he testified with many other words and exhorted them, saying, ‘Save yourselves from this crooked generation.’ So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” (cf. 9:17-18; 1 Corinthians 12:13: both associate the Holy Spirit with baptism) Acts 22:16 “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.” (cf. 9:17-18) Romans 6:3-4 “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” 1 Corinthians 6:11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit…” 1 Peter 3:21 “Baptism … now saves you …”

Spiritual wisdom does not contradict human wisdom. If it does, it is false, that is, demonic. Paul tells us to test everything. How did you test the voice that told you to touch nothing Catholic? How do you know that a demon wasn't trying to divert you from the truth of Catholicism? You just blocked your own intelligence, which was a gift from the Creation.
So sad, he turned to believe a lie. You can't get to heaven without a priest, there is no such thing as purgatory. The Blood of Christ is trampled on, because it is not sufficient to cleanse all sin; however, to teach that you must pay for some of your sin is heresy forsure and if you didn't see that going in you have been seduced!
You have a heretical knowledge of Christianity. You are not alone. Throughout the ages there have been many such individuals who came to disagree with Church teaching and founded their own SECTS. So, there have been many such sects but only one Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Dr. John Bergsma, along with Drs. Brant Pitre and Michael Barber, are the great professors of catholic theology today in the US, also let's not forget the teacher of them all Dr. Scott Hahn, a true apostle of christian faith in our century.

His point about what works of the law means is devastating to most Protestants belief about salvation by faith alone.
@@CatholicDefender-bp7my They don't have saving faith. They believe but not in a saving way.
I think you're right my friend, and IMHO this lack of a true and divine foundation is a sentence of capital punishment to protestantism.

The roots of the Catholic Church are deep into the Jewish Faith after all Christ was Jewish and the apostles were Jewish.

15:34 how do the dead sea scrolls help with understanding the meaning of Jesus putting the clay on the blind mans eyes?

I’m pretty sure Dr. Bergsma has a book on it.

They do not have the Wisdom of Solomon. Chapter 2, 12-20 is the clearest, most precise prophecy of Christ in all of scripture.
I wouldn’t say that John the Baptist had a tremendous influence over Jesus, I would say that the whole scenario was pre-orchestrated by God because He wanted it to work out that way.
Intellectual Catholicism not "Conservatism", as stated at the start of the video.

2.Eucharist - Priest or Bishop only
3.Confirmation - Bishop only (he can defer to a priest but only in certain circumstances)
4.Penance and Reconciliation - Priest or Bishop only
5.Anointing of the Sick - Priest or Bishop only
6.Holy Orders (ordination) - Bishop only
7.Matrimony - Deacon, Priest or Bishop only (as witnesses to the proper form) the couple exchanging vows are the ones, along with God, preform this sacrament.

How can you have linen without thread
I got so many text messages during this vid.
Please address the claims of Ammon Hillman. Debunk him explicitly. Please.
Never heard of him
Jesus said that among those born of woman there was none greater than John the Baptiste. This doesn't seem consistent with the Essenes kicking him out.
The Essence was a heretic set
He was speaking of the Old Testament prophets. As to the Essenes, I am dying to know.
All bishops are priests.
If John the Baptiste was kicked out, maybe it was a given participation in the rejection that Jesus would experience, his death the same.
Rejected by his own?
Could the Essene suggestion that water from a purified pitcher should not be poured into a contaminated cup be a foreshadowing of the words of Jesus that you shouldn't put pearls before swine?
Are you roman catholic
Does it matter? Are you afraid to agree with what you heard?

well that's good for you. how does that relate to catholic baptism?@@CatholicDefender-bp7my
catholic baptism doesn't save anyone. salvation is not through the catholic church's man-made false doctrines, rituals, traditions, sacraments, dogmas, ect. the bible is very clear that salvation is by faith, through grace, in Jesus Christ alone. faith comes from God the Father alone. neither salvation or faith comes from the false roman catholic church, which tries to use things like the eucharist/mass as a means of attaining both salvation and faith. the eucharist/mass is a wicked re-sacrifice of Christ, defying that Christ's death on the cross, was the final and complete sacrifice.
@@manuelpompa-u5e
You claimed: catholic baptism doesn't save anyone.
God claims:
Mark 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
John 3:5 “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’” (cf. 3:3: “unless a man is born again …”)
Acts 2:38-41 “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 9:17-18; 1 Corinthians 12:13: both associate the Holy Spirit with baptism)
Acts 22:16 “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.” (cf. 9:17-18)
Romans 6:3-4 “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
1 Corinthians 6:11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”
Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit…”
1 Peter 3:21 “Baptism … now saves you …”
We agree, through water baptism.

He's got a big problem, he's a catholic but not a christian in other words he's lost. I was a cradle catholic for 27 years, catholic education pre seminarian. He may have a phd which is fine but he has no understanding of the scriptures. He thinks he knows because of his phd however he's lost.

Arrogance impelled by ignorance of Christianity.
All lies. Your heretical beliefs are nothing new. Unfortunately they've led many to hell over the centuries.
