  • This is the most Un-Subaru Subaru (Part 1). The SVX stands on the vanguard of unsung 90's cars. It's a flat-6, all wheel drive, low, sleek sports car...that was a commercial flop because in the 1990's Subarus were known, in America, as cars for people who ambushed you at Circuit City with petitions calling for "People Should Be Nice To Me." PART 2 : • Regular Car Reviews: 1...

The reason it sat in the yard and not the driveway is because this card leaks like a sieve. I owned one and had to park it on the street. Got totaled by a motorcyclist.

Matthias Schmitt *Luxury car* not a sports car. If you define sports cars as simply high horsepower cars pls read a book. ALL luxury cars have automatic transmission because they are marketed towards older people who don't want to have to shift.

Luxury! Their manual transmissions at the time were not up to snuff to support the huge engine. Later MTs from the WRX or STi or larger 2.5 Legacy will work.

***** some guy down the road from me owns a SVX, and i own a first-gen talon (dsm). I always thought the same thing and it really surprised me when i looked closer and saw it was a subaru. If you wanna get technical about it it looks like a 92-94 talon, since the 89*-91 had pop up headlights. I found this out the hard way too, the 1990 and the 1990 alone has a different throttle body, they changed it from the 91-94, so i was kind of shit out of luck trying to find a 90 throttle body rebuild kit and ended up finding an o-ring that would fit in there in place of the actual factory one.

I have been a long time fan. I love watching your reviews when I am looking for a "regular" car. I have always wanted one of these. I found a 1 owner, 94 SVX for 2k. It sat for a year and a half before I found it. I threw a new battery in it and it fired right up. I spent today checking everything out and updating fluids. It is totally stock and was well kept. Other than the faded paint and the A/C belt missing (I found the replacement in the trunk) It is running like a dream. TIme will tell. I showed my Girlfriend this 2 part review and she said "I will never let you get rid of that car." Im gonna call it a win. Keep up the great work!

lets do some comparing and see a different view on why this car flopped in North America:
1992 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo (3000GT's brother) $30000 new
    1993 Mazda RX7 $32,000 new
1992 Toyota Supra Turbo $28,000 new
You could for the same money, buy a lot more car in the SVX's era.

    • @requisim

A 1993 Toyota supra turbo fully loaded went for 46,000 and no I'm not kidding. 1993 rx-7 fully loaded went for 37,000 and yeah stealth r/t twin turbo went around 30,000+ range. If you want to know how I got the 46,000 figure, if you own the very first need for speed game it shows the price tag for each of the 8 cars in the game. Dealers wanted to burn holes in customers wallets so that was the 90's JDM market craze

I had a pearl white one of these. I think the closest car comparison wise would be a more radical/weirder XJS or Soarer, definitely a grand tourer more than a track car.
    They were all auto only.
    Nerd shit:
US models had a standard Subaru 4 speed auto like in the Liberty/Legacies with an electronic fwd biased centre-diff (90/10 f/r when cruising 50/50 under acceleration or slipping). In Australia and other markets we got the VTD (Variable Torque Distribution) transmission with a mechanical rwd biased planetary gear centre diff 35/65 f/r split and a viscous lsd on the rear.
Something he didn't bring up was how much of a tank they are - 1600 kg/3500 lb kerb weight for a 2 door coupe, you don't really notice it when driving though, until it comes to stopping.
They aren't a perfect car but have tons of character ( and the flat 6 sounds awesome), it was fun to see people stop in their tracks wondering what the hell.
I'm definitely getting another one soon.
Also, there's a guy here in Aus who takes his lifted one on vast cross outback treks..

This was supposed to be a perfectly reliable, cheap 150mph highway warrior. Thats why people bought them. Remember, there was no Lexus back then and V6 Toyotas couldn't do 150mph and Nissan z wasn't that reliable. So people imagined doing 150mph, and no repairs for years. But this thing would chew up and spit out transmissions every other year.

I'll never forget the jingle from the local Subaru commercials that played in the very late 80s and early 90s in Nashville Tennessee-"Soob-a-roo... We're goin' places in the south...Soob-a-roo... We're goin' places in the south." If you heard that when you were a kid it's stuck in your head for sure. That has to be maybe one of the most simple messages any car jingle has ever communicated. It's basically saying "Our cars can move where you live."

This car is built so much better than almost any following car subaru built. I have a 92 (silver black roof leather interior, only 100 built) and Its so much more rugged chassis wise than my forester 10 years newer, 120+ mph with all the windows open and you won't get wet in a hurricane!
Mine sat under a tarp for 3 years. It only needed SPARK PLUGS! And the old bastard broke every speed limit on the first test drive like it had never been shut off. Really under appreciated engineering.
Oh, and a 05 wrx 5 speed is going in the place of the horrid autotragic as soon as possible.
Oh, and we got the shity version, Japanese versions had 4 wheel steering and air suspension, and a twin turbo was in development for this motor but deadlines prevented the release in time, and poor sales cemented the fact that this car COULD have been a super car.

I got so exited when one of these SVXs ended up in my town. I see it all the time (its a small town) I have never actually got to talk to the owner but he drives it everywhere. And we also have a guy that drives his BRAT all the time.

My buddy Jay had one of these for a little over a year and I drove it many times. It was a fun car to drive. The only thing I didn't like was the window things that come down but other than that it was a cool car and still is.

Funny, I just picked up one of these, same year, same color, as a side project, and the hood struts are also blown. However, mine uses a piece of wood with a quarter of it cut out and a diagram drawn on the side.
And no matter how many times I walk outside and look at its profile under the cover I had to get for it, I still smile, knowing I finally got my practical dream car.

I remember seeing one of these behind the dealer lot I use to work at. Was curious about it and the VW Corrinado that were back there broken. Be so fun to get either of them running and drive them, but it would require to sink in more money than either is worth.

YEARS ago when I was going to my pediatrician Dr and I saw one of these in the lot. The windows give it away. I have been trying to figure out what car that was ever since. Thank you for your informative video, great job! thanks for helping me find the car that got me into cars.I just can't believe I found it, my father is going to BUG OUT when I tell him.lol Here is my question for all the Scubaru fans. Why does everyone make fun of their Gearboxes?

What a clever hell we can make...I had a 1982 Loyale GL in high school and (yes, I'm older than Michael Stipe's compost pile) early college and never let anyone tell you that 73bhp is enough power for anything larger than an entry-level segue.

I have one of these. My second one actually I crashed Jennifer unfortunaely. And I RACE the SVX. In TSD ralles. I love these cars. The smoothness of the engine. The great ride feel. The luxury for a 92 car. And the looks. I first saw the SVX in Gran Turismo (not kidding) and I immediaely thought... I want one of those. So I got one when my ole Legacy go worn out. WHAT a car.
