Coby was too cute as a puppy with those huge ears I think Coby got his gremlin side from his mum 😂 Gia is adorable too! Is great that they can travel with you, and that there are so many dog parks in Japan!
Yeah those ears are unreal right? I’m so happy we can travel with dogs, dog hotels are super expensive and sitters aren’t so much a thing here so having a dog travel culture here has made things so much easier
the treadmill made me laugh out loud haha! Thank you for such an informative video! Its nice to have a personal account for people moving there! Thank you for your hard work in producing this video! I will definitely check out Doggy Island!
Really can't wait to finally get to Japan, I've been prepared for 3 years now! Will finally arrive in January and can't wait to begin exploring all the pet friendly places 🥰
I wanted to move to Japan but those costs of keeping dog scared me off. I had giant breeds throug all my life (for the full picture i have Cane Corso now) and at the time i had Rottweiler. On top of that he was on a raw diet so i would propably bancupt on food costs :P
@@NomadicGaijin Thanks for the proposition but this whole thing had much more cons to add for me. First of all - I am welder. And not some fancy engineer that works in the office - just higly qualified blue collar. I did my research what i could afford for money i would make and it's not nearly enough to have apartament suitable for giant dog breed. And despite that there is a reality of working in this trade in Japan. I wouldn't had a time to take care of my dog that needs daily socialization, tons of mental stimulation and my sole presence, leadership and guidance above anything else. That said i made tripd to Japan a form of reward for myself after making through hard contract. And it's allways good to be there (and sucks to leave).
You forgot to mention the price. I was at a home center the other day, and found a shiba selling for 700,000 yen. In doggie dollars, that's 7,000 USD!!!
I wish there were dog runs separated into small and big dogs here in Europe where I live (lived in 3 EU countries, no dog runs) and I also wish that people would put their dogs on the leash (also not common in all three countries). We had soooo many incidents with big dogs that don’t listen to their owners, it’s infuriating and dangerous.. We’re thinking for a while moving to Japan and I was kind of worried for our Chihuahua but it seems like Japan is waaaaaaay, waaaay more dog friendly than Europe
Didn’t know that at all! To be honest I feel western culture is more geared toward bigger dogs, with smaller dogs being more “house dogs” but here it’s pretty equal for dog size, chihuahua is a very popular breed and I see them on walks and dog runs all the time 👍
I see that Stone Brewery jacket. Excellent taste. Do people in Japan own Corgis? I feel like they’re a popular breed almost everywhere. I found you streaming on Reddit and I’m really enjoying your videos. I guess I’ll stick around. :P
Thanks! As a San Diegan, I have to rep my home town brewery. Also super comfy 😁 I don’t see Corgis so often honestly but sometimes they are around. Thanks for joining the channel and I hope you enjoy the content 😁
I know why little dogs are popular,In US,Most popular dogs are Labradors,German Sherpard and Golden retriever but Japan, most famous are Toy poodle,Chihuahua and Mini daschaud,Shiba Inu.Althogh most popular large breed in Japan are Golden retriever(14th) and Labrador is 15th but not common as in western countries.Tell me reason why Japanese prefer little dogs over big dogs?
Many cars and houses are quite small here compared to other countries. Kei Cars, a popular choice in Japan, has 4 seats and minimal trunk room. Small dogs are much easier to handle and can run around a tiny house like mine and be happy 😁
@@NomadicGaijin Excuse me I have a doubt,How do I get a dog when I would live in Japan.I know that it's rare to get one from reputable breeder in there unlike USA.Where did you get papillons from?and how?
@@ahalyamedini9809 There are some reputable breeders, thats how we got Gia. We got Coby at a pet shop, and while I hate to support that industry, after I saw him I couldn't let him stay in that horrible shop.....exactly how they get you I know.
@@NomadicGaijin I don't want to buy dog from breeder I want to adopt from Shelthers or recuses in Japan and are they are Papillons or Papillon mixes in Japanese rescues shelthers?
@@ahalyamedini9809 the problem is it’s kind of a mixed bag and not likely you will find papillons at a shelter from what I’ve seen. If you are okay with any breed I think you can go that route
Great stuff - especially that concept of dog theme parks! 🙏 Working on maybe getting stationed out there for work and I've got a little Bichon 🐶 He's currently working on getting comfortable traveling in a doggy backpack - do you know if those are ok for the trains?
Thanks for watching! Yeah we are also trying to get our dogs used to the backpacks for the train, it is possible to take them but I think there's some rules regarding what types are okay. I will check into it and let you know. Hope you can come out here with your pup!
We are planning to move to Japan along with our pet dog (Beagle). I am little worried about what are the expectations from a pet parent in Japan. What are the rules to be followed. My dog is very friendly but he get excited when he see a new dog. He just want to smell and make friends. But I am worried if Japanese find it strange or mannerless. I don't know. Can you please help
I am also worried if my dog just jumps on someone by mistake even though I will try my best to be careful. Can a Japanese claim( Kokoro no byuki)? And ask for compensation? That's why I am asking is third party insurance is required?
I have a standard poodle, it’s difficult! Everything is sized based in Japan so lots of places will be dog friendly but only for small medium dogs and all the prices are also size based. I don’t recommend it
@@azuredragon9928 by size based I mean that restaurants/hotels even if they say it’s dogs allowed, larger dogs are not allowed in many cases. Vets sometimes will have limits on dog sizes( they don’t have the cages/tables big enough for operations, and surgery prices are based on the dog size not the actual procedure). I also encountered issues with groomers that would only groom small or medium dogs. Pricing of course, if you leave the dog at a pet hotel a large dog can cost around 100$ a day just to be kept in a crate all day (even if I provide the food)and 30-50$ extra for a 30 min daily walk. If you take the dog on vacation with you there’s no standard dog fee at the hotel, big dogs pay more.
It’s not actually Coby’s mom, we almost got our pup from there but ended up with Coby instead. But those eyes 😵 I don’t know why papillons aren’t popular, likely it’s because chihuahuas and toy poodles are trending on social media and people prefer those these days, but papillons are far more intelligent and have amazing personalities
My Japanese neighbor's dog sometimes is barking nonstop some hours. It's disturbing and annoying. As a gaijin I hesitate to say something. Is animal's disturbance accepted in Japan, rather than a disturbing human? Do Japanese love to listen the stupid barking dogs, because "sooo cute"?
I’ve heard you can report loud dogs, I actually put in double windows so my dogs barking doesn’t bother neighbors so luckily we haven’t had an issue but it seems like it’s possible
