For just one or two dogs, a much smaller container would keep the water much fresher than a large tote like the one you have, but that could work great for a bunch of large dogs, at least when temps are above freezing.
Mix a few drops of cinnamon oil with water and spray around it. Or sprinkle cinnamon, mint, chili pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves or garlic in the area where you've seen the ants.
This is good,but if you have only one dog.I have....in my yard are living three dogs and....six-seven cats.And I have to leave them for a week or two in twenty days.If I make this they will eat all in two or three days and after will be hungry for the rest of the time.Any ideas what I can do?
Interesting idea, thanks for sharing. Other ideas: Why not use a pickle barrel instead of two buckets? Also, I would not want as much food sitting out as there is in the bottom bucket /'dish' in this video. Even with the preservatives in it, dry dog food will go stale sitting out. and it can attract ants, other insects, or animals like raccoons, possums, etc if the feeder is outside, or if there is a dog dog. Better yet would be a feeder that was not made of plastic. All plastic has pores that breed bacteria. All plastic is made of chemicals, so even 'food grade' plastics transfer chemicals to the food, and water, in them. These chemicals are known to cause cancer, hormone issues (pattern hair loss, overweight, or underweight, etc), and other health problems. after all, dogs did not evolve with exposure to plastics and man-made chemicals.
Don't forget to get your vaccinations and your flu shot and while you're at it take those pharmaceutical meds and eat GMOs and breathe the polluted air and swim in the polluted ocean and drink the polluted water but by all means please do tell us more about how these buckets are bad for your health
You're right @Jefferdaughter The bottom piece is way too deep. It's going to ruin so much dog food as the top is all that will be eaten away. Other than that this is a great idea. The bottom most piece needs to be a 4-ish inch pan instead of that deep bucket thing he has. Yes this is his way of doing it and that's fine. But, nothing wrong with people like us pointing out better options or being able to improve on this design.
All you have to do is place the bottom food catch bowl, inside of another larger container that has water in it. Ants don't like to swim for their food. Add a half of a teaspoon of dawn soap to the water to stop mosquito larvae from growing in it. I do agree the food bowl should be smaller But then again, he may have a few dogs that all run up and eat out of that bowl at the same time. We don't know how many dogs he has, or how they eat. Some dogs don't like eating next to other dogs, but I have seen dogs who do not care.
Your dog water bowl should be cleaned at least every 2 days at most to keep from bacteria growing in it. Think about it. Would you drink from the same glass for an entire month without washing it.
I would be more concerned with keeping it covered with an opaque lid to prevent algae growth and shaded to keep it cool...who likes hot water on a summer day? The water looks clean (at the time of recording) except for a few pieces of plant material floating around. The container looks like it had some stuff in the bottom, though. I agree dogs should have clean, non-stagnated, non-algae-grown water, but please recognize that most dogs lap up that pure H2O you put out then go over and dig a hole and eat the worms/bugs/wood/roots/decaying plant matter/etc....then they lick themselves, clean out their brother's ear, and fight over a community piece of old shoe that has been buried by each dog at least twice. Just keeping it real... {wearing nothing but a sign in Times Square that says "Say NO to paw sanitizer!"}
One of my dogs prefers a raw meat. The other one prefers it cooked, but they'll eat dog food when I'm not around for a couple of days. So this is a great DIY 👍🏻
This is what I call lazy. Bad dog food and leaving it exposed to other animals and bugs. Maybe if you fed your dogs a better diet and not leaving it exposed to bugs and parasites they’d be healthier. You need to improve your ways. Trust me it’ll help in the long run. If you don’t want to clean out dog bowls and give them a proper diet you shouldn’t get a dog. Simple as that.

That could be just mineral deposits on the bottom of the tote. The water looks clean, and the piece of grass is no problem.
