Kinda blew my mind but you’re totally right about it being a crutch. I was just reading my multivariable calculus textbook this week and noticed it was taking longer so I went to TH-cam and 2 times speeded a lecture instead, but I noticed I was learning less because of the lack of depth. One thing I really like about your content is you’re no BS. You’re transparent (or I hope you’re) about your own BS, and I can tell you’re doing it out of speaking to your younger self who thought he knew everything. Basically every young stem major who believes they’re golden for making it to a science degree without realizing it’s not that big of an achievement. Graduating and having a successful career/business in the field IS. I love your content but I have the attention span of a fly so I go on them while I am cooking or watch them by parts. Thanks!
Dude your vids these past couple weeks have been invaluable. I brought my college algebra grade up 30 points, not from anything you said about the coursework itself but from adopting the mentality you describe for succeeding in STEM. I quit drinking, reduced my social media presence to nigh absence, set all my hobbies aside and treat school life like my love life as you mentioned. Something you said once really stood out to me that you've got 16 weeks to master an instrument and the instrument is math and physics. I've been playing guitar for 20 years so that rung out to me. Its cool you mentioned martial arts weapons too. I had the exact same hobby. Started off with nunchucks and before long I had every type of martial arts weapon you could think of and had fun learning them out in the yard as if it was another instrument. Long post I know but to wrap it up thanks again.

I wonder if you watched my old channel JJtheTutor. I picked up where PatrickJMT hadn't started yet some 12-years ago on physics, vector calc and linear algebra. The videos were done by hand in a similar fashion except I am right handed. People often thought we were the same person.

I agree with watching lectures alone not being an effective way to learn. Though sometimes textbooks can be pretty wordy and supplement them with like professor Leonard videos where he explains it much simpler for me to understand. You can't just watch though, you have to engage, look up practice problems and apply the things you learn over and over again.

@@hotman718 yeah, I agree with with you’re getting at. Sometimes you just need to simplify and use videos since it helps having a visual aid. But like you said, you gotta practice. Math and physics will be a pain in Electrical Engineering but it’s alright.
To learn how to learn is something that makes sense in theory, yet in practice, some people, preffer to have experience. Watching videos about problems is one of them. Not everyone likes university, or even have the opportunity to go there. Not everyone is part of a community. And not everyone knows how to approach science in a way that best suit themselves. Some people might lack in critical spirit and some might lack in passion or interest. For example, the Math Sorcerer is a source of passion to me, he does have also controversial takes on learning math or to even tackle this beatiful field, but he is indeed passionate and people might get something from it. In this field, and mostly at this day and age, curiosity is more important than learning. You might not have learnt anything about science but if you are curious then your still on board. What STEM needs is the curiosity necessary to makes bridges and explore lands, not necesarily new never-found-before lands.

You missed the whole point of his video. He never was against using effective resources to pass your courses, he is saying: hey dude, yes you can use these alternatives to speed through your understanding but you aren’t really learning. You are just regurgitating. If you actually want to learn, spend the time problem solving. I mean dude someone who puts 6 hours on a problem and doesn’t arrive to the solution would have way more ways to understand how things can go wrong quickly than someone who knows “the trick” to solve them. The truth is, to APPLY things in the real world it requires both but the former is way more important for actual world problems than the latter because in the real world NOBODY has the answers or tricks to solve problems. You definitely didn’t watch the whole thing, and frankly I also haven’t finished it, I am just 15 minutes in

Your fiction and transcendental talk reminded me a lot of Pelevin. Especially his later works: transhumanism, kgbt+ (which are not as good as his earlier stuff). His translations suck, but I think you might benefit from exposing yourself to his work. A lot of his later stuff can be improved on, in my opinion. Might be worthwhile for you as a novelist.

Michael Sullivan, algebra, trigonometry and pre-calculus is pretty easy to swallow. Calculus and higher is just applied algebra so if you don’t know, algebra like an expert from a pre-calculus book you’re gonna be in trouble. One thing I really like about your content is you’re no BS. You’re transparent (or I hope you’re) about your own BS, and I can tell you’re doing it out of speaking to your younger self who thought he knew everything. Basically every young stem major who believes they’re golden for making it to a science degree without realizing it’s not that big of an achievement. Graduating and having a successful career/business in the field IS. I love your content but I have the attention span of a fly so I go on them while I am cooking or watch them by parts. Thanks!

Dude your vids these past couple weeks have been invaluable. I brought my college algebra grade up 30 points, not from anything you said about the coursework itself but from adopting the mentality you describe for succeeding in STEM. I quit drinking, reduced my social media presence to nigh absence, set all my hobbies aside and treat school life like my love life as you mentioned. Something you said once really stood out to me that you've got 16 weeks to master an instrument and the instrument is math and physics. I've been playing guitar for 20 years so that rung out to me. Its cool you mentioned martial arts weapons too. I had the exact same hobby. Started off with nunchucks and before long I had every type of martial arts weapon you could think of and had fun learning them out in the yard as if it was another instrument. Long post I know but to wrap it up thanks again.

I do like listening to these podcasts. I love hearing your insights and study/life advice. Also love the comments about the other og maths education youtubers haha. Patrickjmt and khanacademy saved me during my undergrad days.
I wonder if you watched my old channel JJtheTutor. I picked up where PatrickJMT hadn't started yet some 12-years ago on physics, vector calc and linear algebra. The videos were done by hand in a similar fashion except I am right handed. People often thought we were the same person.

he's a little better i'd say, because he operates from a place of positivity, which is better for people who are struggling.
I agree with watching lectures alone not being an effective way to learn. Though sometimes textbooks can be pretty wordy and supplement them with like professor Leonard videos where he explains it much simpler for me to understand. You can't just watch though, you have to engage, look up practice problems and apply the things you learn over and over again.
I can’t wait until we have three dimensional lectures with those goggles. It’ll make all of this TH-cam obsolete.

@@hotman718 yeah, I agree with with you’re getting at. Sometimes you just need to simplify and use videos since it helps having a visual aid. But like you said, you gotta practice. Math and physics will be a pain in Electrical Engineering but it’s alright.
To learn how to learn is something that makes sense in theory, yet in practice, some people, preffer to have experience. Watching videos about problems is one of them. Not everyone likes university, or even have the opportunity to go there. Not everyone is part of a community. And not everyone knows how to approach science in a way that best suit themselves. Some people might lack in critical spirit and some might lack in passion or interest. For example, the Math Sorcerer is a source of passion to me, he does have also controversial takes on learning math or to even tackle this beatiful field, but he is indeed passionate and people might get something from it. In this field, and mostly at this day and age, curiosity is more important than learning. You might not have learnt anything about science but if you are curious then your still on board. What STEM needs is the curiosity necessary to makes bridges and explore lands, not necesarily new never-found-before lands.

You missed the whole point of his video. He never was against using effective resources to pass your courses, he is saying: hey dude, yes you can use these alternatives to speed through your understanding but you aren’t really learning. You are just regurgitating. If you actually want to learn, spend the time problem solving. I mean dude someone who puts 6 hours on a problem and doesn’t arrive to the solution would have way more ways to understand how things can go wrong quickly than someone who knows “the trick” to solve them. The truth is, to APPLY things in the real world it requires both but the former is way more important for actual world problems than the latter because in the real world NOBODY has the answers or tricks to solve problems. You definitely didn’t watch the whole thing, and frankly I also haven’t finished it, I am just 15 minutes in
At some point in my undergrad when I started taking upper division and grad level stuff, practice problems became less useful relative to reading and understanding the materials

Your fiction and transcendental talk reminded me a lot of Pelevin. Especially his later works: transhumanism, kgbt+ (which are not as good as his earlier stuff). His translations suck, but I think you might benefit from exposing yourself to his work. A lot of his later stuff can be improved on, in my opinion. Might be worthwhile for you as a novelist.

30 y.o. going to college for the first time. Currently in the first semester. What books would you recommend for studying from college algebra to calculus 2 and beyond to get a solid grasp on the concepts? I’m afraid I’m going to hit a wall and I want to be prepared.
Michael Sullivan, algebra, trigonometry and pre-calculus is pretty easy to swallow. Calculus and higher is just applied algebra so if you don’t know, algebra like an expert from a pre-calculus book you’re gonna be in trouble. I made some cheat sheets and things can really help clarify some stuff at the bottom of this email. You’ll see me showing these texts at some point in the next few days.

i agree with the math videos arent helping as much as if you teach us how to teach ourselves because as for me personally i love ur channel and style but i cant follow the vector calculus im only in hs still im still scared of college algebra😂

Alot of these people are kids man. i dont think they care, they are on surviual mode looking to just pass and get a job.
And that’s exactly why 50% of all stem majors fail and 50% of the people that pass and get a degree don’t work in their field. I’m trying to communicate to that 20 to 30%. That actually are going to work in their field.

I’m playing around with membership options because every time I publish a new video, it stomps out the virality of the previous one. Probably gonna make one every every day but only release one every week.
21:55 I think the same because sometimes you get the correct answer, but it’s not the most optimal way to find it. In your job, you need to find the most optimal solution
