As a 22 year old who just transferred to university with 41 credits and essentially a rap sheet of failed and withdrawn classes, I needed this video. Nothing fun until Christmas lets go...
Seeing the 100+ people in your major trickle down to about 30-40 by senior year was something. But I didn’t let that affect me. It really is a lifestyle change and accepting that it’s on you, not the professor. The sooner you do that, the sooner you’ll see the results. I gave up so many hobbies and friends just to live and breathe mechanical engineering for about 16 hours a day. There are things I regret, but in the end it was worth it because I graduated summa cum laude with the most important applicable habits.
I have been watching haha. Joking. It is just in the air and I am a psychic but not really because when you know math well enough, you can see the future-that is, how the solution unfolds.
Sir, I have never heard of you, searched for you, I didn’t even look up this video or any type related. But you just ate me tf up. And i appreciate it. Thank you for your service.
When I was in engineering at least half the students dropped out or switched majors. Don't worry about it. Just do your best. Bring your A game. Flunking out will happen by itself. Engineering is an APPLIED science. It always pertains to something (domain knowledge). So, learn the basics of physics, math, chemistry, statistics, psychology and accounting well. As you change career fields 3 times, this will be more and more important. How many EV car software engineers were there 20 years ago? Holographic programmers will be common 20 years from now. Software engineers can live in a world of software, but the minute they try to program a drone, which has flight mechanics, they are stumped if they don't know physics and calculus. Accounting will be very useful when you make your own startup or talk to management. Business and economics are so generic that they give you a false sense of confidence, more than anything. KPIs that apply to any and everything.
Absolutely, mastering the core principles of applied sciences is essential for staying versatile and relevant in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
@@camgere Totally agree, I’ve been feeling lost lately because I feel no specific degree will actually be enough for me. I love business as much as computers as much as I love engineering. I wanna do more than SWE. And I wish I was going to school in a university that required two majors as such is the case in some universities where the norm is to study multiple concentrations.
@@MarkMusu92 I like your ambition. I've worked in Fortune 500 companies and small companies. The small companies were extremely educational. Each department was 1 to 4 people, so you could easily see how all the pieces played together. Very valuable when you start your own company or become an equity participant. Write down every stupid thing they are doing and make sure you don't do it. Learn the business of business on someone else's dime. There is no being an employee doing the least possible for my job description when you want to be handsomely rewarded by creating the greatest customer value (using leverage like borrowed money and employees) in the company you own. Take on the world!

I needed to hear this. I've been a cs major for a year and I think it's finally time to admit that it's not for me. Thankfully, my college has other majors that interest me in the same way but aren't STEM.
CS requires you to self study the material EVERY day. CS is more of a skillset degree its almost like becoming a master at an instrument in 4 years lol.

@@J-Santi you need to set yourself apart, think about the problems you’re solving, understand that the way you interact with people can change everything for you, you can set yourself apart from a bunch of brainiacs with a simple handshake and confident posture, keep pushing man!
Everyone feels it, and you can only compete with yourself. The people who feel a need to appear better than others usually have major flaws underneath the facade.
I've met people who are very arrogant and egotistical about their studies, it's usually because they're just avoiding themselves and their own problems
I kinda disagree with two of your main points: 1) The whole "some people aren't build for this" bit seems like bit of BS to me. Sure, it will be difficult / impossible for someone with a below than average intellgeince to complete a STEM major, but those aren't the people who are interested in that kind of inherent puzzle solving, attracting people to stem majors, anyway. If you have at least an IQ > 115 (this is the average IQ of a 4.0GPA highschool grad btw) and you have no severe mental illness or other health challanges, there is no field you can't get a Bachelors degree in because you're "too stupid", given you put in the time and effort. 2) "Difficulty shouldn't be a correlate to the reason why you chose the major". This might be my inner goggins-/self improvement brainwashing speaking, but I think pursuing something for it's difficulty alone, as long as comes from an internal want, although kinda dismal, is a legitimate and sustainable reason/purpose for doing so. I'm studying a pure math major right now and although abstract math like sub-manifolds, group theory, etc. interests me, I'd say that at least 50% of my felt purpose comes from the fact that I can see myself internally growing in pursuit of the degree and in overcoming the challanges along the way. Likewise, even economically speaking, getting out of college with a degree in something you're "gifted" for is worth less, than getting out of college with a degree in something you're only average at, but also with a hard and honest work ethic, self control-and-motivation and the self knowledge necessary to pursue what you really want.
pre-med here. My grades are very high on my priority list. If you want to do well, you will. Doesn’t matter what your reason is. It’s effort. Not a math person, but I am a chem enjoyer.
Pre-med isn't hard at all. The worst prereqs are calc 1 and organic chemistry to get into med school(I took it and it wasn't even hard, no math at all). There is a ceiling for some when you go into higher level classes in math, engineering, and the physical sciences. You have no clue what you're talking about.
@@danielr4005 subjective + maintaining a 4.0 in any stem major is difficult. I’m a biochem major so I have to do higher level chem classes than required for my pre-med reqs. Also requirements vary. It’s not a contest lmao
@@toni8514 I don't believe anyone can get 4.0 in engineering through "effort". If you do, you gotta be a freak of nature. You aren't human, don't compare us to your weird standards. Professors live off giving students 40s. If the class average is in the 70s, the professor takes it as a failure on their part, and that the next part will be harder.
i’m an environmental science major with a minor in wildlife biology. I used to be a journalism major. chem and math are difficult but I LOVE biology. I’m going to have to take up to physics 2 and i’m barely holding onto a C in chem and C- in calculus. every time I think I get it, I fall behind 😭 but I won’t give up!
It’s just a few years, and getting a C and overcoming it and follow bees and Ace and so forth is much more impressive than someone that just jumps ship
I am also majoring in biology and plan to transfer into an Ecology, Behavior & Evolution major at a university. I initially chose to major in English to be a wildlife journalist because I was not confident with my math and science skills, but I love animals and nature. I ended up switching to Biology and was super intimidated by the courses required to transfer but I decided it was something I really wanted. I am so motivated by this and have changed my perspective so much on math and science. It has become so exciting to learn things that I never tried to grasp in the first place and I have just been filled with so much curiosity. Anyway, just wanted to share because seems like our experiences are similar! I know you will succeed in your courses with the passion you have for Biology and I hope you let that drive you to where you want to be.

Best advice in the video. TEACH YOURSELF. I took every math class after calc 1 twice(besides 245). Calc 2 was just hard. Calc 3 and calc 4, i got the same forgien teacher who's accent i couldn't understand my first time through the class. It's my fault I was in the first place, always registered late and he'd be the only instructor left open. I wonder why. Number 1 lesson from that experience is that your grade will be your grade no matter what that guy teaches. Even if he doesn't teach you anything, you gotta pass that test.
you’re spot on with that teaching yourself is so important especially in math classes sometimes the way a teacher explains things just doesn’t click and it’s up to you to find that understanding on your own it’s tough but it’s definitely a skill that pays off later on keep pushing through those challenges and remember your grade is just a number it’s about what you learn in the end @authorjond btw if you want to boost your understanding in math and physics check out my ultimate crash course for stem majors it’s made to help students like you tackle tough subjects with confidence here’s the link author-jonathan-david-shop.fourthwall.com/? thanks for being a fan! your efforts help more than you know!

I gotta say you said things which not allot of people address. I came to this video to listen about how to deal with my situation in college. Yes you’re correct i am responsible for my choices and this indeed my fault. However that doesn’t make me regret coming to Uni because just in the first month I have learned allot as a person. The only thing I may slightly personally disagree with is the respect part. The people who shows compassion, camaraderie, and love who actively is trying to help you deserves the upmost respect. However those who threaten me or treats me badly and leads to harm me or my friends will never have my respect, regardless if they are a person skilled at a field I admire or not. Some may say this statement itself it’s narcissistic and they would be right. However if I cross that line and began to tolerate harm around me then I’m a hypocrite. So in that I ask myself “what is the meaning of life” and to that I agree with you, helping others and making them feel comfortable is one of the most noble things to do. However I cannot predict the future, I may die with dignity or I may become a monster. You will probably not read this but thought I would just leave this in here.

I haven’t started college yet but if I go into college as a cs major to become a software engineer and I don’t end up getting a job once I get out imma lose my mind
You’ll be fine! I’d recommend you minor in math or make sure you’re good at stats and linear algebra just learn as many software applications outside of programming as well and do some research position or something. That’ll make it a lot. Easier to get a job when you graduate.
When reading a textbook. Is it better to read through it first and highlight the parts you want to write down and then after finishing the reading, go through and write down those points? I feel like I take longer trying to write notes as I read and it frustrates me.
It always takes longer at the beginning of a course. That’s why you gotta spend the first 2 to 4 weeks before the course starts, getting ahead then if you’re 2 to 4 weeks ahead of the course when it starts, you only have to study like five hours a week. The fact is if you don’t know how to read a textbook, you gotta learn how to read a textbook. If you’re not getting anything from lectures, you’re not prepared for the lectures and so forth. Just two weeks ahead of the course and learn how to learn! Your brain is your brain, you gotta figure it out! i chose my degree path because i seemed to be pretty good at it. The required classes in my chosen major were a ton of hard work, but i ended up doing really well in those classes. I didn't choose to follow my actual passion because no matter how much i loved it, i was just okay at it. Plus i knew that my passion wouldn't pay as well as my chosen career. Not saying that's what everyone should do, but that's the path i chose. Nowadays, i pursue my passion as a hobby only.

Hi Mr. David.. I was wondering about this recurring comment you have regarding math being the understanding behind why there’s 26 alphabets. I tried finding more about this from ur other content.. couldn’t find much. I am curious how u come to this conclusion.. I see what you mean, my guess is that it has something to do with axiomatic reasoning. To be able to decide on a set of axioms and build from them. And that language is that too ? It would be great if u could expand on that a bit ?
Lmao. The point is that there is nothing to expand on. People try to turn a language into some sort of philosophical spiritual experience. Math was invented by people and everything was defined to be the way It is because it was chosen to be that way. “The Author” Jonathan David Support your learning journey and help keep this educational channel thriving by leaving a tip - every contribution empowers me to create more valuable content to help you succeed! I dont think this situation really applies to me, because im doing pretty well in my classes and I just stumbled on this video because it seemed interesting, but my professor genuinely is frustrating to deal with, i had a 3 hour back and fourth with her via email just for her to listen to me regarding a technical issue when trying to access my course exams. All of my classes are online and i blame myself for failure regarding work. But i took a class with her earlier this year as well and we had a group project, she removed points for us not following a guideline that she never posted and was not in any of the course materials, when we emailed her she told us to just figure things out on our own. It wasnt just us going through and checking once, we referenced the materials and thoroughly went through everything as well.
Everything I talk about is just based on an average of what I went through and what I observe. It’s not gonna be 100% accurate to everybody. But still good information.👍
@@authorjond Even if I can't relate too much to the talking points here, besides the whole you're on your own thing, I do find these discussions to be interesting.
You may find my "Pursuit of Knowledge" hour interesting. It is not about college but about my conclusions of reality in relation to space, time and using physics to destroy philosophical nonsense.
I’m a useless STEM major. Doing maths for the 2nd time😂. I realized early on that it was on me. The university gives plenty of extra support and the lecturers are average (maybe a bit bad). But I didn’t feel like doing anything more than 3 hours a week on all my courses and I attended less than half of my lectures. Some how I passed Chem, physics and philosophy but maths… This year it’s been mostly the same but I’m trying a bit more. How do I know whether STEM is for me if I haven’t tried hard enough? I can’t remember anything quickly like the other students seem to be able to. I can go through all the other issues and reasons etc etc but that’s enough 😂 so I’ll stop whining about being aware that I’m a whiner and ‘lazy’

@@authorjond That's a good point. I also guess that fictional stories are really not close to the reality (even back then). I cant party 3x a week and expect success in academics probably... or is that just me?
Right on about politicians and their love for power. I can't figure out why anyone would worship a politician. Especially someone who is running for president. Anyone who thinks that they should be president is automatically showing that they are not qualified to hold that power.

Brother,I have some questions please answer. 1)I am doing major in statistics, with minor in math and economics. Will you consider that as stem degree. 2) I struggle in maths in very much like Calculus, algebra etc. Some of its basic are also not so much clearer to me.But when I study deeply i get it,but my marks gets compromise in these situations. Do you think I should continue, i mean i can do it but eventually I will get less mark percentage cgpa etc.
One of the issues people don’t fully realize about math is that they are writing complete English sentences when they’re writing them. If your grammar with math is off, it’ll lose a lot of points. Are you asking if you should stop the minor?
@@authorjond Also if you consider yourself as a author and have problem figuring or reading what I wrote, then I think that's a little problem. If I'm not wrong you are from USA.
@@authorjond Actually I am from a asian country which doesn't have English as major language. Also,in my country we write maths for ex (let's consider that variable as "x" ,in our native language).Other than sin cos type of words I have no idea about English. I asked two questions 1)First one is that,Will a statistics Major considered to be stem? 2)As I am very weak in maths,I struggle in basics of topic such as trigonometry, calculus, algebra to some extent. But, even after that I can learn about certain topics with some struggle like for example finding of reduction formula. My question is it okay to be like that.
I was not referring to your grammar in the message I was referring to your exams. The biggest point most people have with math is incorrect mathematical grammar. It has nothing to do with typing English. It was a reference in the structure of how you put equations together
My math is atrocious but I love bio and astronomy. I’m struggling immensely with basic chem. I want to be a medical lab tech it’s only a 2 year degree, I’m a mother to a 4 year old with a husband who’s an engineer and thinks I can get the degree. Do you think it’s feasible for me. For further context I come from an art background and am an emotional person, worked with children for 10 years on and off. I know the sciences can be cut throat but is there any room for sensitive people like me to bring something different to the field.
Nobody is good at math. It’s like saying you’re good at having muscles. If you want to do something, and you are passionate about it, by all means, you are more capable than the rest! I watch people that are great at arithmetic fail, miserably in science degrees because of arrogance and people that are terrible flourish because of passion.
@@authorjond Thank you 🙏 I can put my ego aside and turn to the basics as long as there’s a will there’s a way. Thank you for your inspiration and honesty.
Well, most people I may change their major around junior year, so doesn’t really matter lol I started off in psychology, then went to business, then worked, then started an engineering and physics, and landed with a degree in math moving to a masters and math going to theoretical physics and PhD, but guess what? I’m publishing a video here in a minute talking about this if you want more detailed response. But to sum it up: the professors are not trying to discourage you, they’re trying to encourage you because if you’re not 100% accurate, you’re 100% wrong. If you can’t become precise, people will die, literally in your field. Do you think NASA is going to want somebody to work on a spaceship that is only 70% accurate? So yes it’s very common to see that because they’re trying to explain to you that if you’re not 100% right, you’re 100% wrong.
@@authorjond I mean that's fair. But if over 2/3 of a class of 400 are failing (all these people got an A for maths in high school) are they not doing something wrong? I'm not saying that people shouldn't be held to a high standard but isn't such a poor pas rate indicative of problems? Tbh idk what they are because uni has offered a lot of help imo its the students like me
@@authorjond Well if you think that meeting your own goals over others people needs is the core recipe for isolation and domination - I must tell that you are wrong.
I know many people with that mentality and now they are all alone, and the only people that will be around them are people that they dominate and force to stay around them.
@@authorjond BRuh, everyone wants to accomplish a goal or atleast find a goal, if not they are probly depressed. Just because one is moving fowards a goals doesnt mean they are like that all the time. Anyone, it probly much diffrent from where I live compare to where you are.

GANG GANG CHANGED MAJOR
samee lmao. Barely made it to UCSC
Awesome I’m sticking through with it! I watched the same thing and it took me about 10 years to finish lol
I love that your videos are oddly specific to whatever I’m going through transitioning to a four year school 😂
Well, I am author Jonathan David, but you can call me author Jonathan David.
Welcome to my channel!
Failing physics rn , i am in high school (senior) I AM NOT GOIN TO GIVE UP HELL NO PHYSICS WILL BE MY LIFEE IT WILL BECOME ME
The road to hell is paved in hell!
I needed to hear this. I've been a cs major for a year and I think it's finally time to admit that it's not for me. Thankfully, my college has other majors that interest me in the same way but aren't STEM.

@@irenicrose yessir!
Nothing changes you just realize everyone is struggling along
I kinda disagree with two of your main points:
1)
The whole "some people aren't build for this" bit seems like bit of BS to me.
The first rule in learning is admitting you don’t know anything.
pre-med here. My grades are very high on my priority list. If you want to do well, you will. Doesn’t matter what your reason is. It’s effort. Not a math person, but I am a chem enjoyer.
Thanks for the insight! Stick around and you might learn something
Thanks for the insight! Stick around and you might learn something!

Even if he doesn't teach you anything, you gotta pass that test.
you’re spot on with that teaching yourself is so important especially in math classes sometimes the way a teacher explains things just doesn’t click and it’s up to you to find that understanding on your own it’s tough but it’s definitely a skill that pays off later on keep pushing through those challenges and remember your grade is just a number it’s about what you learn in the end

Make the right move and the right things will happen. Often difficult things are difficult because we aren't meant to swim against stream. Go with the flow and you will be guided to where you need to be. Best of luck!
It’s great that you’ve grown as a person through your university experience-staying true to your principles while helping others is a strong path forward.

Math was invented by people and everything was defined to be the way It is because it was chosen to be that way.

what if i already messed up
Everybody messes up. You can only fail at something if you stop trying. And don’t do things that make you miserable.
Should i go into ai ?? I am behind on math like behind behind and no coding experience??
sure. do that of which you are supposed to do and you will be doing what you meant to do
I dont think this situation really applies to me, because im doing pretty well in my classes and I just stumbled on this video because it seemed interesting, but my professor genuinely is frustrating to deal with, i had a 3 hour back and fourth with her via email just for her to listen to me regarding a technical issue when trying to access my course exams.
It is not about college but about my conclusions of reality in relation to space, time and using physics to destroy philosophical nonsense.
needed this, appreciate you uncle
You are welcome, my nephew or niece or whoever you are.
Some how I passed Chem, physics and philosophy but maths…
This year it’s been mostly the same but I’m trying a bit more.
Just remember, “no one can be taught they can only choose to learn”
Have a wonderful day! Unless you have other plans.

IM AN 18 YEAR OLD GIRL AND IN STEM MAJOR IN COLLEGE RIGHT NOW HELP !!!!!
I am here to help!!!
I really thought Uni would be like the movies. That was my issue. Trying to force it be like the movies on top of other difficulties and uncertainties destroyed me.
You’re wrong! You’re just writing the movies for people 50 years from now. Times change it’s still like the movies. These movies just haven’t been made yet.✌️
@@authorjond That's a good point. I also guess that fictional stories are really not close to the reality (even back then). I cant party 3x a week and expect success in academics probably... or is that just me?
Reference other message.
Right on about politicians and their love for power. I can't figure out why anyone would worship a politician. Especially someone who is running for president. Anyone who thinks that they should be president is automatically showing that they are not qualified to hold that power.
There are two things you don’t talk about, “politics and religion” because you never know who you might offend 😂 I should take my own advice
What if say a student was putting in the work, but not doing well on the exams? Would you say the professor was at fault?
Watch this video. Why getting 100s on your homework will set you up for failure.
th-cam.com/video/-hHa31SdveE/w-d-xo.html
Judging by what he said in the video, if you actually tried your best, then you’re just not wired for the subject.
That, or you’re just not playing the game by the proper rules.
so why are there 26 letters in the alphabet and its relation to math.
Because the 27th letter has not been introduced yet
Can you go over functions for college algebra/precalc
I replied to this message in a video response.

I asked two questions
1)First one is that,Will a statistics Major considered to be stem?
2)As I am very weak in maths,I struggle in basics of topic such as trigonometry, calculus, algebra to some extent. But, even after that I can learn about certain topics with some struggle like for example finding of reduction formula.
My question is it okay to be like that.
I was not referring to your grammar in the message I was referring to your exams. The biggest point most people have with math is incorrect mathematical grammar. It has nothing to do with typing English. It was a reference in the structure of how you put equations together
@@authorjond so will a major in statistics be consider as stem
Cheers! 🥂
I didn't even choose my major ,how cooked am I
Well, most people I may change their major around junior year, so doesn’t really matter lol I started off in psychology, then went to business, then worked, then started an engineering and physics, and landed with a degree in math moving to a masters and math going to theoretical physics and PhD, but guess what? I left Brad at school to write fiction novels!!! so don’t worry too much

Is it normal for maths major to have fail rates of 70%? 😂 my Uni be like that. I wish I was joking
Tbh idk what they are because uni has offered a lot of help imo its the students like me
Watch that video I made today.
And you can't sacrifice yourself for others all the time, you gott focus on yourself first.
Yes- the recipe for isolation and domination.
Messages through text are more often than not misunderstood.
Your discursive speech makes you sound like you're in a manic episode.
Thanks! 🙏
And thats just a hypothesis A game hypothesis 😅
What you mean?
@@authorjond I assume this is a reference to the "but that's just a theory! A game theory!
Did I say game theory?
The context here is that they're referencing a youtube channel called game theory, which focuses on theories or you would say hypotheses related to video games. Each video pretty much ends with "and that's just a theory a game theory"
Ah. So they are theorizing. Got it
