- UPDATE 2021-02-26: after a month and a half of delay with no known release date, we have a new release date, in just ten days! Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time will be released in theaters in Japan March 8, 2021! Omedetou!

If you saw an ad, it wasn't due to me. I did not and would not monetize this video.
This was not on TH-cam, so I had to upload it. I don't own the rights to the STILL FRAME IMAGE from Evangelion, or also, obviously, the greatest performance of the greatest song in all of history.
This track is taken from The Evangelion Addition CD and was also released on Evangelion Classical vol 1. This is the same performance featured in episode 24 of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and in Evangelion: Death. Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Conducted by Alexander Rahbari and performed by the BRTN Philharmonic Orchestra Brussels.
You will notice the audio has been compressed. I did this because the environment in which music listening takes place has changed. I simply can't play it loudly enough to hear the quiet stuff without the loud stuff potentially bothering my neighbors.
I'm not completely satisfied with the compression here, either. But then, I'm rarely satisfied with my work. If you understand audio compression better than me, some pointers would be quite welcome. What settings would you recommend? I didn't want to go overboard or anything. Just to bring up the quiet stuff.

Gendo triggered
"The only freedom I possess... Is to choose when to die.
...And I... Do not.... Choose lonely eternity."
Who said this quote Shinji?
Carter Revell Kaworu Nagisa, right before his death at the hands of Yui and Shinji Ikari.
That line foreshadowed Shinji‘s fate
Who wants some TL;DR? In defense of the infamous "minute of nothing," finding out what the lyrics mean at 13:28 is what convinced me Anno is a genius. An 18th-century German hymn stripped of its original context, makes perfect sense synced with the (alleged lack of) animation.
Original German:
1: "Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
2: Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
3: Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
4: Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen!"
(each two lines are sung by the male soloist, then repeated by the female chorus)
English:
1: "Be embraced, millions!" This summarizes the decision Kaworu is coming to and explaining to Shinji while both versions of the line are sung.
2: "This kiss is for the entire world!" The "kiss" is either Kaworu's self-sacrifice per se (really putting the "Christ" in "Christian motif"), or Shinji's reluctant participation. Killing his one remaining friend to prevent extinction is the precedent for Shinji rejecting his "everybody should die including myself" mentality and ending Instrumentality.
3: "Brothers, above the star-field
4: "Must a loving Father dwell!" In Evangelion-context, this is cruel irony at the root of what's wrong with Shinji... or is it? In EOE, Gendo says he kept literal & emotional distance from Shinji to protect him. It could also mean "someone caused all of this," referring to SEELE/Keel, Gendo, and their competing plans driving the entire story. The "Seeds of Life" (Lilith & Adam) in turn have a creator (never directly referenced in NGE/EoE).
The actual moment of Kaworu's death (and the famous splash) cuts off the first line of the next stanza, "Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?/Do you bow to him, millions?" Instrumentality is a choice, despite how hard SEELE worked to force it on everyone and how much Gendo didn't care.
This comment has vindicated untold dozens of bad takes posted here and comments that are just a time stamp and not a single word. Thank you.
@@TheSchmuck2 I *just* looked and realized the video is 8 years old.
In my opinions your toughts are even more accurate if you think about Kaworu himself.

yes!! Me too
Not to mention the irony in Yui's soul inhabiting Eva Unit01, given how Gendo's main excuse for being the literal devil was wanting to reunite with Yui, and she's the one that gives us viewers the sweet satisfaction of seeing him perish. (Maybe)
@@iamnottheguy8914 there's a lot of layers there. Definitely the punishment angle, and also I think how the Human Instrumentality Project consumed him in a poetic, workaholic sense.

@@iamnottheguy8914 please share with me the flaws as you see them. You have piqued my curiosity.
12:42 In the context of the series, the situation is critical and disturbing; a young boy who's a very nice person, happens to actually be an angel that manages to go further than any other angel has achived to reach within NERV's HQ; everyone is confused and suddenly anxious because of the unexpected and extremely dangerous betrayal, and for Shinji it's even worse; his only friend is now an enemy that has to be killed by all means, and even Kaworu himself asks him to get killed by him. Being given all this information, you would expect a fiting melody for such an event, right? Well, while all this transtorned tragedy is taking place, a classic melody known as "Ode to Joy" starts playing, and because of how anticlimatic it is for the situation, it _does_ slap harder than any dark music they could have chosen for this scene; Imagine that you are *very* depressed, and then, a hopeful song starts playing while your entire life is being teared apart:

I'm glad someone else thinks that way, give Anton Bruckner's 7th symphony, 3rd movement a try, it fits that description perfectly.
It really is though, it makes it more surreal
th-cam.com/video/Q9V8xmrJ6ps/w-d-xo.html
The "pre-9th Symphony" (declarated by Beethoven in person). A sort of "Ode to Joy 00 Test Type", as well in my top of his compositions 💕 (and let's talk about my absolute favorite composer and musician of ever, of course) ❤️
Maybe it's because it features in Die Hard, Neon Genesis and A Clockwork Orange but I associate it with the phrase "a terrible beauty is born", namely an apocalyptic event like you describe but glorious. It definitely creates a cognitive dissonance in that it's "chirpy" joyful music but there's a force in it that's overwhelming which suggests something cataclysmic. Uneasiness + exhilaration for me listening to this.

Litle Ángel right?
Cherub is not at all angel, thank you for this comment. Cherubs are the closest angels to God.
@@d.a.g.c961 That's a common misconception. The small child-like angels depicted in Renaissance art were later confused with Cherubim. But in biblical tradition, Cherubim are generally considered the second highest class of angels after the Seraphim (and the second closest to God). They are said to be four-winged animalistic creatures that move like lightning. and represent "fullness of knowledge". Quite a bit more formidable than the usual modern depiction.

Anno and his team really know how to use the medium. This scene worked because it was animated--it's the rigidity and illegibility of the Eva's posture and expression that allows us to feel Shinji's turmoil. It's the Kuleshov Effect in excelsis! If we saw any breathing, any twitching, any shifting, we'd focus on that instead, but stillness--absolute stillness--traps us in the entry plug with Shinji. It's genuinely one of the most breathtaking shots I've seen in any medium, up there with Jupiter backlit by the sun in 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Writer, the Scientist, and the Stalker sitting in the rain in Tarkovsky's Stalker.

The first time I heard Variation 9 (12:39) after watching Evangelion, I started crying uncontrollably. Sometimes a piece of media completely colors the impact of a piece of music for you. This was one such case.
I adore how Evangelion introduced me to this amazing composition, to this day, it's till my favourite song.

This part of the show interested me in that Shiji went from flat out refusing to kill someone even to save his own life to feeling so betrayed he wanted to kill someone( Kaworu ). The characters in this show have a breaking point when they can’t take it anymore, this was Shinji’s
He didn't wanted to kill him, but he felt forced to
Even if he still felt betrayed
PAN LOL that’s a good point, being that Shinji hesitated for as long as he did
I don't know if anyone has talked about this, but I always thought the structure where Kaworu is first seen sitting on looks like the statue of the goddess of victory Nike, wich has the appearance of an armless beheaded angel.
It's intresting considering the way Kaworu died: The beheaded angel is a symbol of victory.
The beauty and tragedy that is kawoshin. Such a fitting song for one of anime's most tragic plot twists
Agreed
I was in a choir and we were going to sing this, literally a month before the concert I decided to watch evangelion, I cried in stage while singing, the tears just run down my face, it was magic
1- The emotion and force of this symphony it's just amazing
2- bruh, *splash*
17:05 still my fave part to sing and to listen
damn, must be a masterpiece moments.
wow I want to see the concert lol sounds amazing
It's a shame this part is usually performed so slowly...i think Rahbari is the only version i've heard so far that chooses a proper tempo for this epic release of tension.
Damn Kaworu and his taste in music
I really love Evangelion, such an amazing anime! It gave me headaches for days while I was trying to understand everything. This symphony really matches with evangelion's hidden meaning and the psychological state of the characters in this episode.
Abel Figueiredo omg same! I just got into it and had to watch multiple explanation vids to take everything in. Once you understand that this show was opening our minds to the characters metal emotions it feels more like a therapy than a anime

I really love the new Rebuild series. Fantastic animation. And they've brought the intensity of the struggle against the Angels to a whole new level. It's really visceral and I find it quite moving. And the music. Damn.
Well, I really love all of Evangelion, so... yeah.

@@IamOutOfNames *_*anime moan*_* thank you all
Then you realize Armisael, one of the angels of the series, looked like a "worm" and he's technically a "Cherub"
This isnt entirely correct, the part "Cherub steht vor Gott!" means before, In terms of standing in front of someone. So it should be:
"Pleasure was given to the worm and the cherub stands before god"
I don't blame Beethoven. I'm going deaf with how loud I've been blasting this for the last 15 minutes

6:49 Kaworu descends. Something about the image of the Angel slowly falling down the shaft, with Unit 02 hunched over it protectively always gets chills out of me. It also signifies the beginning of the conflict between Shinji and Kaworu as that conflict has become inevitable. That conflict is resolved at 13:28, but not without regret.
har har.
This frame of animation is displayed for 9 seconds and then briefly later for another minute and four seconds. In a 22-minute episode it takes up 1:13

Our World: Oh classical music.. how nice.
Eva World: Oh Shit! Classical music.. EVERYONE GET DOWN!!!
Whenever classical is used in such perfect juxtaposition, but also in perfect context, it results in my first viewing experience, with my jaw on the floor, and my tears joining it.
Mozart has been real silent since this dropped.
Probably just an Eva hater. They're out there.
I can't imagine another reason anyone could thumb this down. Unless they have absolutely horrible taste.
Forget about that. Beethoven was fucking deaf. A deaf person made this piece of musical art. That people just have bad taste in general

Never ceases becoming older
But the older it becomes, the stronger it hits. Kaworu was right, music really is the Lilim's greatest achievement.
Episode 24 turned Ode to Joy into fight music.
Imagine if Stanley Kubrick had made a TV series.
That's basically what Evangelion felt like when I watched it. It was quite an experience (especially the ending).
Yes, there's no question Kubrick had a big influence on Evangelion. In the climax of The End of Evangelion, there is even a musical homage to the iconic percussion of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and there are many visual similarities.
This is because Stanley Kubrick and Hideaki Anno both know, at least subconsciously, some of the most powerful ways to convey a message to an audience is through the symbolic processing of the right hemisphere of the brain. They're next level. 🌟
That's cool to hear. I was also reminded a bit of 2001 when I watched the End Of Evangelion.@@TheSchmuck2

I'm so sad Beethoven wasn't able to live to see Evangelion all the way through.
This scene is so weirdly calm. Kaworu looking up to Shinji and Shinji looking down to Kaworu. Both waiting.
“Choosing to die is the one absolute freedom. It is the one and only choice that no one can take from you”
