Siku restoration Mercedes 406 Binz Ambulance No.V292. Diecast model toy.

The Mercedes 406 Binz ambulance was produced by the German company Siku in the years 1969-1974. Previously, the Siku company produced plastic car models. The Mercedes was very carefully made. To display subtitles in your language at the bottom of the video, please press C on your computer or the three dots on your mobile in the video. All the doors in it opened, and there was a plastic stretcher inside. My copy is from the first year of production. He was battered but complete. I repaired his right-hand rear door because it was crumpled inward. I also made a cardboard box with a weight of 250 and made appropriate decals. Ah, Siku. Awesome work, looks great. You rescued the rescue car, that kind of fits, i guess.
Siku was always a bit more expensive, but it was worth it. You could feel the quality even as a child.

I loved watching you bring this one back to life, since it's a model that holds a lot of childhood memories for me.
Siku was not a big brand in my home country Denmark back then, but occasionally I'd go with my family on shopping trips to Flensburg, just south of the German border. On the pedestrian street of Flensburg there were 2 big shopping malls, Hertie and Karstadt, both with big toy departments full of cars, including lots and lots of Sikus.
On one of these trips I saw, and bought, this Binz ambulance and it became a real favorite of mine, partially because I never saw it in Denmark, so it was quite unique for me to have one. My version was the later one, with a few changes compared to the one seen here:
1) The baseplate was zinced/chromed not black painted
2) The wheels were wide "speedwheel" type, hard plastic with white printed centres
3) The box was window-type, purple and orange
I had this model for many years, but finally lost it... or rather, I think I discarded it after it had completely fallen apart, but I never forgot it, and when I started rebuilding my childhood collection back in 2010, this was high on my list of must-haves.
Finding one in good condition (as a non-restorer) was easier said than done, but I finally managed to do so, and my replacement copy is the older version like the one you restore here... and it looks almost as perfect as your restored one. So happy to have it back.

Brings back memories again. Got this one on vacation in Germany back in the late '60s or beginning '70s. Still got it in played condition but in a very good shape. Axes and wheels were of a much better and stronger quality then later models SIKU. Great job again, Paul.👍

I don't know if you read English, but, how do you determine which paint remover to use. The 3V3 gel or the Hot water with Caustic Soda. I am interested in your thought process on this. Thank you. Great work.

it is hard to say because not all paints are self-dissolving by chemical agents and then you have to use caustic soda, caustic soda also has the advantage that it removes paint very thoroughly and you do not need to clean the body additionally, but it certainly cannot handle powder applied paints
