    I REALLY like how this episode turned out, so I hope you enjoy. Thanks for watching. Oh, and the reason I didn't have any footage was that I filmed this the day TLJ came out. Tight turn around! -- KH

      Around 7 minutes in, Kyle says that if they truly went into hyperspace, the resistance ship would pass right throught the Supremacy, but I don't think that is true considering that
      Han Solo in "A New Hope", says that they need time to make calculations so that they don't hit anything while in hyperspace. I find that to be also the reason there are hyperspace lanes, these are routes already tested that have nothing between destinations.

      @Nerdist Lightsabers would not cause the steam explosion and set the ambient air on fire as you referred to. They contain the heat from the plasma in a kind of shielding. So that means only things that enter the sheilding will get burnt and the heat does not extend outside of the sheild.

      Isn't it not about hitting stuff while in hyperspace, but about having their trajectory changed by the gravity and potentially exiting hyperspace inside a star or something of the sort instead of the intended destination?

      There is a... well. Crap. Legends are non-canon.
      But still. As I recall, SW "FTL" movement work like this - first ship reach a certain speed and then hyperdrive phases it into hyperspace where actual "FTL" travel takes place. In other words, no one nears speed of light in real world before going "hyper".
      There are obstacles in hyperspace - a) it isn't homogeneous which explains "Galactic Pathways" existence and b) gravity can affect things in hyperspace, reaching across the "border" (there are even "gravity well generator" traps in the animated series, IIRC).

    Speaking of RKKV's, the Sci-Fi author Ian Douglas does something similar. He has humanity up against an alien race so advanced they might as well be using Magic, so their response upon finding a world of theirs is to load up cargo containers with sand, accelerate it to near C, then release the sand. Chews through half a planet, very cool to read.

      Katze
      Except, neither "football" or "soccer" is actually the correct name of the sport. And, of the two names, Soccer is the more specific.
      See, "football" is actually just slang ("soccer" is, too). There is no such sport as "football" much like there is no such song as "Rock and Roll."
      "Football" is a TYPE of sport, not a specific sport. Namely it's a sport where players compete to carry an objective (namely a ball), on foot, to a goal area.
      The ACTUAL name of the sport in question is called "Association Football." And the reason why simply calling it "football" isn't accurate is because there are other types of football to consider, such as gaelic football.
      This is where "soccer" comes in. "Soccer" is actually just an abbreviated form of "As-SOC-iation." And, while it is still slang, like "football," it is more specific in identifying this specific sport of all of the football sports.
      That's why, if you aren't going to call it Association Football, then the next proper name would be soccer.

    • @Xainfinen
      @Xainfinen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      The ship didn't have enough fuel to power a complete jump so it ended up being a RKKV. The same thing happen to any ship that jump with shitty/damaged hyperdrive in almost every Sci-Fi media, you just end up being a beam of particle. What Holdo did was aiming that beam at something after turning off the safety protocol that prevent a ship to jump with low fuel and half assed calculations. The ship do jump! But most of the energy go into hyperspace but don't reach destination while some of the energy stay in normal space and damage whatever is in front of it.

    • @gunnerdan5908
      @gunnerdan5908 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah true, but in this video he's talking about what would probably happen in real life, so I guess the rules are different in the star wars universe (shock horror, it's sci-fi). Seeing as in the film the entire ship wasn't obliterated, I doubt it would do much to SKB or anything that big.

    • @saberune
      @saberune 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I think once you've entered hyperspace, which happens virtually instantly, you're essentially in another dimension and cannot interact with objects in normal space. Dropping out of hyperspace happens instantly, too, so it wouldn't qualify the MF as one of those RKKVs because even if the crash occurred a split second after dropping out of hyperspace, they'd still be going at a speed too slow to achieve the near-light speed carnage.
      The reason it worked the way it did in the movie was because the ship didn't have enough fuel to make a proper jump into hyperspace. It was able to accelerate to just below the speed of light, which is what created all the kinetic potential, but it couldn't cross the threshold. So, upon impact, it was still in normal space.

      The death star is to big

    • @thecrokodial2224
      @thecrokodial2224 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well, the supremacy is 60 km wide which, while enormous, is nothing compared to the death star's 140-160 km radius. The second death star is much bigger than the first at 200 km radius. The Raddus (Holdo's ship) is a mere 3.8 km long.
      Looking at the scene we can see that the Raddus is comparatively at point blank range to the first order fleet. This makes it possible that the raddus hit the fleet BEFORE going into hyper space.
      But what about the damage? Why cant we just kamikaze droid piloted ships into massive death weapons? Well, after looking at the footage, it is shown that the raddus only did a thin cut through the supremacy. Sure it is rendered useless, but Finn is still able to have a 2 minute fight with captain phasma without suffocating. In fact, the other side of the ship looks almost untouched.
      The raddus is actually one of the largest ships owned by the rebellion. So why not bigger? If the Raddus can only do a thin streak if damage to a 60 km ship, why not just make a fleet of gigantic, droid powered ships and just ram them into a death star? Well, it would be extremely expensive to do so. Not only that, but it would not do very much damage. In all 3 reincarnations of the 'giant space station with lazers' thing, the place that destroys it is right in the centre. All the ships would be destroyed even before they reach it.
      There. That's my Penny's worth on the topic. I dont think I've 'debunked' your argument. But this is just what I think, so it is not canon.

      To add to your point,
      Also, the Death Stars have their own gravity wells, so ships that are in hyperspace would be pulled out of it. You can't escape from the Death Star by using hyperspace and you can't do Holdo's Hyperspace Ramming attack because it'll be pulled out of it's hyperspace when it reaches the Death Star's gravity well's orbit.

      I don't think it's sci-fi armor OR plot armor. I don't think it's armor at all. I think it has to do with the fact that in the Star Wars universe, hyperspace doesn't behave like normal space. Objects in normal space produce "mass-shadows" in hyperspace, but I get the feeling that physical interaction is significantly lessened between an object in normal space and an object in hyperspace. So even though the Raddis is moving at hyperluminal velocity, its "apparent mass" is less than normal.

    That "Lightspeed Kamikaze" is in a fraction of a second BEFORE the ship entered Hyperspace. If the ship was slightly farther away, it would just phase into Hyperspace and gave no damage at all. This move is normally impossible because The Empire would shoot the ship before entering that "accelerating into lightspeed" range. But Hux told his men to focus on the escaping vessels and ignore Holdo's ship, making it possible for her to move closer and enter that lethal range of "Lightspeed Kamikaze".

    • @TehComs

    • @FoAmY99
      @FoAmY99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that is the case. In universe, FTL drives create a mass effect field, that reduces the mass of the ships, to the point where they can exceed the speed of light. But that doesn't exactly mean that the objects then have no mass. If you have something that has the same mass as a beer can, if it hits something at FTL speeds, that's going to be a catastrophic explosion anyway. Kyle please correct me if i'm wrong

    • @Traumglanz
      @Traumglanz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      FTL speeds are regardless not possible, because even a something with the (rest) mass of a beer can would have an infinite mass when reaching lightspeed. Now if you reduce the relativistic effects to make lightspeed and even above a possibility with less than infinite energy you automatically reduce the kinetic energy as well.
      In the end a ships kinetic energy for collisions will always be limited by it's engine and thus you can always build just as strong conventional weapons using the same energy source. Unless naturally the propulsion system is some form of perpetual motion machine, but in that case the question remains why this is not useable as source of energy generation to build lasers or black holes with it. ;-)

    • @sbvera13
      @sbvera13 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If we try to make ME physics work with RL physics, what would happen is literally nothing. The FTL ship would simply pass through the city, and it's planet. To reach lightspeed while having mass (ANY mass), you need infinite energy. We can safely assume they don't have infinite energy because the ME universe has not evaporated into a universe-size sphere of radiation. Thus only way to reach lightspeed by reduction of mass is to reduce mass to zero. At zero mass, there are no forces present to interact with other matter, and the ME RKKV passes through the target harmlessly.
      If we assume that the ME field is disrupted by the planet or something, bringing the RKKV out of FTL upon impact, it would simply appear at the impact point at zero velocity and settle gently onto the ground. Energy must be conserved, you see. (0 Mass * C) has the same kinetic energy as (X Mass * 0 velocity) - aka, none at all. So once again, nothing would happen.
      Neither of these scenarios are possible under in-game canon though. Canon states that bullets are accelerated using ME technology, and they hurt upon impact, so in-game physics clearly don't work this way. In RL this violates the law of conservation of energy and is impossible. So if we stay in-game, we have to acknowledge that ME physics and RL physics don't mix, and what would happen is basically determined by the plot.

    The problem is (and correct me if I'm not remembering correctly) that 'light speed' in star wars was an inter-dimensional form of travel (nicknamed hyper-space). So it wasn't increasing speed per say, but rather jumping into an inter-dimensional Super highway. Kind of like an HOV lane.

If a ship has not yet reached hyperspace, it is being pushed by only it's sublight engines. Those same engines (stated as being out of fuel and incapable of outrunning the First Order ships) are all that you have to generate kinetic energy for your kamikaze attack.

      I think the biggest issue, is what rules ships entering, and existing hyperspace follow in Star Wars, as far as acceleration, and whether the acceleration is purely done by Newtonian engines, or whether the ship begins to shift more and more of its mass into hyperspace as it begins its jump. Some of these scenarios might result in less mass directly interacting with the Supremacy. Even if the Raddus did complete its jump, one idea, is that the Raddus night have still been very shallow in subspace, so it might have hit the Supremacy's mass shadow, with some of the Raddus mass getting forced back into realspace, in a narrow cone centered along its original trajectory, some of which would tear through the supremacy, while other fragments would emerge from hyperspace some distance behind the ship, creating a large relativistic navigation hazard.

      This really gets into the nitty-gritty detail of how hyperspace works, which the movies were never clear or consistent on. I think the canon explanation is that hitting Starkiller Base's mass shadow while in hyperspace would have blown up in the Millenium Falcon in hyperspace, not realspace.

    • @brettpalmer1770
      @brettpalmer1770 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @secondsein7749
      @secondsein7749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In star wars Canon, ships travelling through hyperspace would pass objects in real space but only if it has little gravity. Objects with huge gravity wells would yank out a hyperspace ship. Unfortunately, the ship would often be yanked too close to the object, giving little time for the the pilot to react to avoid collision. So the force awakens with the Falcon almost hitting starkiller base is accurate to canon.
      This is also why we didn't see raddus maneuver explosions in other scenes that we thought depict a raddus maneuver when in reality, it is not the maneuver. Those scenes are simply ships exiting hyperspace too close to another ship and collided with them in real space without the ftl energy.

      I would say, based on the scene, that the ships that impacted and exploded against the Star Destroyer hadn't begun their hyperspaces jumps at the time. If you look, those ships appear to still be moving at sub-light speed, presumably as the coordinates were being entered and they were building momentum. This is further highlighted by the fact that the ships that had already begun their jumps passed harmlessly by the Star Destroyer as it exited hyperspace. The different classes of ships all have different lightspeed capabilities (there's actually a break down of it in the Star Wars RPG) so some are able to accelerate much more quickly than others, which is what we're seeing in that scene.

    Very cool, I know that a lot of comments explaining the scene based on SW Legends and cannon info exists already but I wanna share my version. For context, this is based on three fact:
    1. Hyperspace is supposedly another space dimension (Legends).
    2. The Supremacy has a tractor beam so powerful that eject ships from hyperspace, so the ship should have so presence in both places at the same time.
    3. The Raddus is a heavily protectet cruiser with one of the most powerful shields in the entire SW universe.
    When Holdo makes the jump the "shadow" of the Supremacy in the hyperspace collides with the Raddus and its shields, creating debris that exit hyperspace with relativistic speed. This debris are the RKKV that destroy the fleet behind the Supremacy.

    • @user-vr5zk9ox8d
      @user-vr5zk9ox8d 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      BioCyberNaught Ugh but hyperdrive is not light speed... Hyperdrives allow starships to travel faster than the speed of light, crossing space through the alternate dimension of hyperspace. So they aren’t travelling through space, you’re travelling through Space-time. This suggests that the technology can manipulate relative theory.
      So no, it’s not two objects plowing through each other, it’s more like one object passing through the other like a ghost.
      It’s completely nonsensical and is horrible writing and just plainly awful cannon. This is why the Death Star had to be blown up from the inside 🤦‍♂️
      Although, you could argue that if they have the technology to jump through another dimension of space-time, in theory they could develop science fiction KKKV weaponry like suggested in this video but that is completely different, and I would still call it lazy story writing. Mostly because For a particle which is created travelling slower than the speed of light, the speed of light is the fastest possible speed. The reason is that, in order to accelerate an object, you need to use energy. ... At this point, it is impossible to gain enough energy to accelerate the object any further. However if a human was travelling that fast (or any organic matter, for that matter lol), physical consequence of traveling at the speed of light is that your mass becomes infinite and you slow down. According to relativity, the faster you move, the more mass you have. No, we cannot travel at the speed of light. You see, if an object travels at the speed of light, its mass will increase exponentially! Consider this… the speed of light is 300,000 kilometers per second (186,000 miles per second) and when an object moves at this speed, its mass will become infinite.
      So if you account to how fast they “jump” to those speeds it would definitely kill anyone piloting a vessel because of the laws of inertia, and before you say there’s no gravitational pull in empty space, even in space objects have mass. And if they have mass, they have inertia. That is, an object in space resists changes in its state of motion.
      So you say “so what, weaponize light-speed with non manned pilots.” Well to that I say if they can make weapons with light speed they most definitely can develop EMP type weapons which would render it unless.
      However the whole point of this is that there is A LOT of “Ifs” so, yes it’s horrible and stupid writing by Disney and Rian Johnson. Case closed.

    • @user-vr5zk9ox8d
      @user-vr5zk9ox8d 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      BioCyberNaught And it makes perfect sense too because it explains why they don’t blow up when travelling in hyperspace. Just imagine all the space debris they would hit if they were travelling at light speed - or faster, which is impossible for measuring speed - which would include: planets, ships, asteroids, etc. Of course it’s all science fiction but this movie destroys Star Wars lore and physics lmao. Good job Disney 👏👏

    • @Drawngalaxy
      @Drawngalaxy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      3 there is the fact the we see in every Star Wars movie that the ships get pulled, it’s heavily distorted, meaning it’s being pulled fast enough in order to enter hyperspace. With that in mind, it means that when entering hyperspace, the ship get accelerated at the beginning, during, and at the end of going thru hyperspace. If it’s getting propelled and mid impact, it would carry the momentum from the transition. We know it’s not going at the speed of light, but we do know that it’s moving increasingly fast upon impact, causing the ship to become shrapnel. The reason why it wouldn’t work to weaponize it nor would sending a bunch into the Death Star would be because what we saw in TLJ was a large flagship crash into one of the thinner areas of a wing section, which is why it was able to do so much damage, but if an x wing were to try it, or even a cruiser like home one, they would leave varying craters in the Death Star. It might destroy it, but there are many variables to calculate for. Another example comes from the battlefront 2 (EA) game, in which a cutscene shows a star destroyer coming out of hyperspace and destroying a rebel blockade runner by ramping it while coming out of hyperspace, meaning that hyperspace ramming is a tactic, just not a effective nor safe one. This shows that what holdo did is a plausible thing that only works under certain circumstances.

    • @user-vr5zk9ox8d
      @user-vr5zk9ox8d 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Troy Sheinsin
      Coming out of hyperspace could work as a tactic because it allows for the element of surprise and tactical positioning. The speed is more of a second variable. However, if you are going from rest and accelerating into hyperspace, again an object would have to be travelling at a very high speed for it to cause the damage that it did, even if it is to a weaker part of the Dreadnaught’s wing because it had fully functional shields. Even if we do calculate the mass and size of the flagship Holdo used, it would still have to be travelling at very significant speeds, which as proven in this video would cause massive effects. It’s just not very intuitive, nor consistent in my mind in the way it was demonstrated. It’s much more convenient to me, and in theory it would probably have to be going near the speed of light for the maneuver to be pulled off successfully. This is also seen by the amount of distance in space it passed within milliseconds of the scene.
      The biggest fallacy to this logic, once again are the fully functional deflector shields. Several varieties of deflector shields existed, including ray shields, which deflected or scattered energy (although sometimes they were not powerful enough to fully negate enemy fire), and particle shields, which diffused impacts from high-velocity projectiles and proton weapons.
      We know for a fact that these shields can endure a lot of energy and are very durable to withstanding or deflecting various forms of kinetic and thermal damages. This is why shield generators are so heavily protected and robust.
      So if it’s not going the speed of light, or if it is going very close to it, the damage should have been much worse, or none at all. Can’t have it both ways in my mind. Either way it was very anticlimactic and a daft conclusion.

    • @Drawngalaxy
      @Drawngalaxy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      3 interesting idea, but it also brings up the question of what happens when to ships collide and they both have their shields up? In reflecting on what you said about the distance it travels in between frames, as we get closer to light speed, science as we know it gets wonky, so how would shields interact with each other upon collision? Also the shields are meant to withstand a lot of damage, but in the case of the movie, all the force( no pun intended) is concentrated into one relative position as supposed to it being spread out like with laser fire, and would likely run into the same problem as with a kinetic energy barrier( barriers that absorbed kinetic energy and send it back, with their one flaw being something that either is applying a constant unrelenting force, or something applying a immense amount of force over a relatively small area). Plus, shields in Star Wars have a refraction period, so when she went into hyperspace, she could have just lucked out and phased thru the ships shields during the refraction period, in which the shields were down for a nanosecond, and bypassed them completely. Although, again, physics do get wonky the closer we approach light speeds and the shields might not have matter to something that was fast enough that the normal sense of physics wouldn’t apply to. We can at least determine that the ship was reaching near light speeds and crashed, becoming shrapnel, after the ship crashed, so it most likely means that the ship was able to put enough force on the shields to disable them and tear thru, becoming shrapnel in the process.

    Weird thought, what would happen if it was only going .5c to get into hyperspace? Similar thing I assume, no time to dodge, but more manageable energies. Last question, could you potentially calculate at what speed the impact needs to take place, in order to produce the effect seen in the movie?

      I just did. It's .5c. Because science.

    In the hard-ish scifi book I wrote, Alcubierre drive gets invented in the late 55th century (took us long enough) and the Sol System government doesn't share them with civilians or exoplanet colonists for this exact reason. Every ftl drive is a weapon of mass destruction. In fact with Alcubierre drive, forget ftl speeds or space warping, the Death Ray effect (accounted for in the book) can pretty much vaporize the crust of a planet too (or more) and you don't even need to lose your ship.

    What's the point of creating a Death Star and Star Destroyer then? Just make a bunch of tiny autopilot ships and send them into planets at hyperspeed xD

      Uniique TwiisT exactly what I thought watching that shitty movie. There were certain rules in this universe, they changed them. Not good.

      Shields and the need to accelerate. The timing and distance would have to be perfect. Too close, you may not get the velocity you need and be squished against the ship's shields. Too far, you'd pass into hyperspace before the collision.
      Also, Kyle said "If it's going the speed we're assuming it's going". In the case of the movie, the speed Holdo accelerated to was enough to cut the Supremacy's wing (and enough for the shrapnel to tear many Resurgents apart), but not enough for the results Kyle got. In other words, you have to be super-precise for the maximum result.

      As we see in SW7, they are capable of aiming a point with only dozen of meters of error at some lightyear of distance. So they are completly capable to aim a death star. One of the biggest plotholes of this new trilogy.

      Catalyst375 why would they need shields if they're basically suicide planes

      Correction: Han did that, and he's known for the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. He's no ordinary pilot.

    You mentioned the Raddus would pass through the Supremacy if it was really going in hyperspace. I want to know how that works. [Because Science]

      Tyr Correct me if i'm wrong, but Hyperspace is another dimension where the laws of physics are different allowing you to go faster than lightspeed, and the distances are shorter. To enter it the ships approach lightspeed.

      In Star Wars Universe Hyperspace is only usable through discovered "Lanes", so there is like some kinda of Einstein-Rosen Bridge highway system that Hyperdrives allow ships onto. Han Solo is a good smuggler bc he calculates routes that 'jump between' lanes so he can cut time off trips (hence he flys 'faster' in space)

      Carrie Snider you are correct. While in hyperspace ships don't pass through anything. Thus the calculations you are referring to are for the ships computers to calculate a clear straight path from where you are to your destination. This has been referenced in several books (technically non-cannon anymore but until Disney says otherwise I see no reason to let it stand).

      Not remotely the same thing. The Galaxy Gun fired a warhead into hyperspace... and DROPPED the warhead from hyperspace before impact, which would disqualify it from being an RKKV. It was good at sneak attacks, but all they had to do was skip the warhead, launch their garbage at the enemy (saving money), and keep it in hyperspace until impact.
