    So after some discussions on the Discord channel for The One Ring (find the link here: discord.com/channels/348254014598545408/582959822014775306/1089451754543906896), my initial interpretation of calculate fatigue during a journey was the intent of the developers, and therefore Rules As Written. So I'll unpin my below comment and pin this one. That being said, I do agree with captainnolan5062 that there is something to calculating fatigue during that could add some more drama to the journey.

      Okay so looks like the link doesn't actually bring you to the response in question. So once you're there, go to the search bar to the top right and search: Journey Fatigue and you'll find the discussion!

    About the fatigue: I've been recently reading the trilogy and I noticed that the fellowship after every day's journey they were taking some rest with someone on guard even in the darkest places like Moria. I think this is a good way to regenerate fatigue in game too. Other ways that made them feel refreshed in the books were the elven cordial Gandalf had and shared a sip with the fellowship when they needed to push some more while journeying. Also boiled athelas leaf helped them after they came out of Moria. Improvising and using something like that, I think helps run the game during these phases.

      I haven’t used songs yet (still learning the game) but I do believe one of the benefits is reduced fatigue (or someone other journey bonus). For the Athelas plant the Ruins of the Lost Realm supplement highlights its uses. Just don’t remember exactly at the moment, but I think it reduces the time to heal from a wound by half, and reduces shadow by one point if the Player-Hero has some shadow accumulated. There’s also in the Rivendell supplement it talks about the elven cordial, again can’t remember off hand what benefits it embues (not near my books at the moment!) thanks for the discussion and for watching!

    So from my understanding - and correct me if I am wrong
    The act of drawing the map from the player side is merely a colorful way to guessistimate their destination.
    What truly matters is the number of hexes and the marching tests.
    I got very overwhelmed by it, but by your explanation it seems to be much simpler than it first apperead.
    Calculate how many hexes -> Roll the die -> solve it, keep doing this until they reach the place.

    • @RyanoftheNorth
      @RyanoftheNorth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. The player's look at the map, draw out their route on the player map (or in the case in the video Roll 20), and then you as the Loremaster figure out the distance in hexes. They make the marching tests to see how far (in hexes) they go before each event happens. Really took me a few attempts in Strider Mode to get the hang of it and feel comfortable with it.
      The group I'm running a game for did that and in Roll20 I'm able to overlap the player map easily with the LM map and makes it super easy to do. As compared to other RPG's, this mechanic I really like as it draws in that travel element that is lacking I think in other games. Thanks for watching! More videos are on the way!

    Okay, looking at the rules, (1) on p 114 under the Consequences you gain the fatigue points (and presumably mark them immediately on the character sheet). (2) on page 69, travelling causes you to accumulate fatigue "representing a form of exhaustion" ... "WHEN GAINED, fatigue points temporarily raise a Player Hero's total Load, effectively making it easier to become weary." See p. 49 & 22. (3) On p 111, "Fatigue points are recorded on the journey log, and can not be shaken off while the journey lasts." Thus, they would affect the player-Hero while on the journey, reducing his carrying capacity and possibly causing weariness (See page 22). However, you can only REMOVE them when the journey as at an end (by the procedure listed). This is how I read the rules.
    Now, adding in common sense: The above reading of the rules also makes the most sense from a realistic travelling perspective (as you increase your fatigue, your endurance decreases and your weariness increases (and that also make the most sense narratively as well). It seems silly to me that you could take a 20 hex journey in winter, accumulate 60 fatigue [extreme example of rolling an 'eye of Sauron' in every hex of the journey) and continue to stroll along as if nothing has happened, until you end the journey, at which time you just rest until your fatigue is gone and you never really experience any ill effects of fatigue.
    I would urge you to try it the way the rules are written (which I have set out above) and your journeys will become much more rich and consequential and will feel more like a Tolkien Journey.

      Great discussion! I’ll take a look again as it’s been a while, and see how I landed where I did. But agree, the extreme example is a nice one to highlight… maybe why the game designers suggested the Yule phase is during that time and stress that no one travels in the dead of winter much, if at all!

    This is absolutely wonderful and extremely helpful to new and experienced players. I am chaffing at the bit for more, and thank you for taking the time to produce something so attractive and easy to understand for our TOR2e community.

    Thank you to @captainnolan5062 for pointing out an error when calculating Fatigue and when to record and add the effects of fatigue to your character and ultimately impacting whether your Player-Hero is Weary or not during a Journey. As noted on Page 69 in the text box on the bottom left, “When gained, Fatigue points temporarily raise a travelling Player-hero’s total Load, effectively making it easier to become Weary.” This not is not found in the Journey Rules section but under the Endurance and Hope Section in the Core Rulebook and may be missed (as I had missed!). This will further make journey's, as Captain Nolan states below, more Tolkienesque!

    Thanks for posting this Riddle! I was have a disconnect with some of how the Journey process worked but video really cleared this up. I was even able to apply several of the Journey elements to another solo RPG I'm playing that worked wonderfully. Please keep these videos coming. 👍👍

      Definitely, especially if you haven't played. I'm learning as I play, so wanted to start to help out new players and loremasters hence the new playlist!
      But, the journey sequence is how "Folco" got from Bag End to Bamfurlong in the solo-play videos... everything that was experienced, were from the random tables and rules.

    Do the hexes that are 1/2 darklands (usually in a road hex) count as darklands or not?

    • @RyanoftheNorth
      @RyanoftheNorth  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't counted it as dark lands for anything "on the road"... I've went so far as looking at the PDF map and zoomed in, to look at the colour and it looks to be not. And from what I've read over on the Discord, etc, seems to be the consensus. But that being said, would definite shake things up if it wasn't, especially for "less travelled" roads or sections further away from a safe haven (thinking past the junction to Sarn Ford/Bree south to Tharbad along the Greenway).

  • @captainnolan5062
    @captainnolan5062 ปีที่แล้ว

    Using common sense, it would seem that as you get fatigued by a journey, it would affect you immediately and start to slow you down (think of Gimli trying to keep up with Aragorn and Legolas when "hunting orc". I will take a closer read of the rules and see if I agree with you (i.e. how the rules are written, without letting common sense influence me).

    • @RyanoftheNorth
      @RyanoftheNorth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I agree, RAW seems to go against common sense, like in the example of Gimli keeping up with Aragorn and Legolas lol. There has been some discussion over on the TOR discord server about the Travel Fatigue and how and when best to calculate, etc. during the travel or at the end as written in the CRB. In my play and as LM a handful of times so far, I've kept it as RAW.
