- In this video we take a look back at a role-playing game "Thieves' World" by Chaosium. For those who don't know the game is based on a "shared world" anthology series of books called "Thieves' World" edited by Robert Asprin. Take a look and see what gaming was like in the 80's!
I had the original Thieves’ World and absolutely loved it. Plus I read all the books. ❤
Chaosium did a great job capturing the feel of the books for the game. I think that between two of us we have two copies of all the books and three copies of Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn for some reason. There is a very "classic fantasy" feel to the books.
@@ThreeOldGuysHobbies Yes, there truly is. 👍
love thieves world, great source book
We are fans of the books, and the game did a remarkably good job of bringing the stories into the gaming world.
There were actually a dozen Thieves' World anthology books between 1979 and 1989. Chaosium released an update around the same time as the 6th anthology came out as well. FASA also released three scenarios for the game.
Also, your website seems broken.
We felt as the series went on it felt a bit less like Thieves World and even the feel of the covers changed. We did have a copy of the FASA book but unfortunately it disappeared over the years. What seems to be wrong with the site, this is the first we have heard of it. We just filled 3 orders on Friday. Any input is valued.
@@ThreeOldGuysHobbies I get a "site can't be reached" when I try to go there.
Also, AVG says it's not safe for some reason.
Sanctuary has been my favourite fantasy city since I read my first novel and got the box set back in the early 80s. Still love it.
Hector here. Sanctuary to me was a fantasy city done right. Not perfect and gleaming and not so worn as to wash away in the first hard rain. There was something about the games and stories from the early days that had a quirky elegance to them.
@@ThreeOldGuysHobbies My favourite RPG character I ever played was a Downwinder who ended up making good. By that I mean she got out of Sanctuary :)
@@briansmaller7443 That is dream in Sanctuary. If you make it out, you succeeded and if you have all your limbs, you are living the life :).
@@ThreeOldGuysHobbies This character returned home after many years away and rescued her family from poverty.
How in the world did you get a new box set? I lost my Lankhmar city of adventure back in high school and i was never able to get the thieves' world box set
Hi! First, glad you enjoyed the video! Second, I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but it's not actually a "new" boxed set. I picked this up back in 1982 (about a year after it was first published) and have had it floating around ever since! I do try to take care of my games, and I was luckier with this one than most (trying to preserve those SPI flat trays is a nightmare, for example). I also ran across my boxed set of the Free City of Haven (if you remember that thing) the other day too, and it's actually in even better condition! Maybe if there's any interest, we can do a video on that one too some day.
Oh yes, I would love to see a Free City of Haven video. Brings back awesome memories ❤
@@agilemonk6305 We are currently trying to get our filming schedule sorted out but when we do we will definitely do a Free City Haven video.
@@ThreeOldGuysHobbies Awesome 👏
I have managed to acquire several boxed sets - two in pretty much mint condition. And that is here in New Zealand where it was never even a niche of a niche hobby.
