  • We just purchased this 1971 International cab over 4970a model truck. It’s 20 miles from home and in in running and driving condition. It has newer tires, the air system holds air, and the brakes are great. The detroit diesel 6-71 inline 6 is running but needs some attention. This will make a great project here on the channel. The vintage semi truck interior is in great shape for a nearly 55 year old truck.

It somehow reminds me from when I was a kid watching "CHiPs" on TV, they always had these kinds of Tractor Trailers!! This inspired me to build model kits, and I absolutely loved Tractor Trailer model kits, in fact, I think I actually had the model kit for this same truck!! Congratulations, I love ❤it!!

That's hilarious! Yes, for whatever reason (possibly the black wheels) I instantly thought of CHiPs. It seemed like whenever they had a Tractor Trailer seen, they would use International Trucks, I think, because they were just so awesome looking!! :)

This sure brought a flood of memories back. I worked at the International Harvester factory branch sales, parts and shop in Nashville, TN from April 1972 through October 1978. Worked on quite a few of these both in the mechanic shop and in the body shop.

I had a similar experience as yours. I was a truck mechanic starting back in 1973. In the early '80s I was working for a truck shop near the San Francisco airport. They had a tractor similar to the when you described. She was a sweet running truck! Of all the tractors I've worked with over 43 years she's my most favorite! I used her to shuttle trailers with. A breeze to drive I got real good at backing them into a shop bay door on a busy street. She always made me look good! Had 43 years went great heavy duty truck mechanic. Like you, I'm retired and a paraplegic who is bed bound as a result of damage to my cervical spine area due to a birth defect. First affected me when I was 20 years old. After some surgery and in year recuperation I got an apprenticeship at a Ford dealer and they're truck department. It was pretty light duty. But I love trucks. Also, I wanted to work nights so I could stay in shape by going to the
gym, bicycling and doing what I loved to do. I credit my job as a heavy duty mechanic help to keep me
in good shape. Fortunately I had a great wife who wanted to have her nights to herself so everything worked out. I learned to be careful and respect my body but I did really well becoming supervisorial
after about 15 years on the wrenches. The rest of the time I was able to be a foreman, ran couple of night crews. Then at 55 years old I hit the jackpot as a shop foreman for a large garbage company. Great people, great support for the shop. If the equipment wasn't right it didn't run until it was right. Teamster Union benefits and great pay! Retired at 66 when my neck injury started becoming a problem.
I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Drove one of those in diesel school in the early 80's. Ours had 903 Cummins V8 w/10 sp. Fuller. Ran well. Also had a Freightliner with 8V71 in it and 13 speed. Screamer but total disaster suspension-wise>>WORN OUT! These were tractors we took apart and put back together for class. Had a Ford LN8000 with turbo Cat 3208 in it. The air ride seat was bad so you sat low. The passenger sat on a folding chair>>kidney buster. Get your's fixed. The truck didn't come with a turbo originally. The turbo was on top in the back so the dog house wouldn't fit. Nothing like a hot turbo right next to your right foot. This tractor was donated by Caterpillar and was a test mule. Have fun with your new purchase. Be sure to not go over center with the cab up as it will fall forward. Get a heavier prop for it.

That valve was called a front limiting valve. It didn’t completely stop air flow to the front brakes, it regulated the air pressure to a degree. They were eliminated in the 1976 model years for all trucks when the first generation of ABS was mandated. FYI, I’m a 69 year old former truck driver.

I have a similar 89 International cabover with Cummins 855 engine. You will for sure need to add a bobtail valve to the rear air brakes - this is different from a front proportioning valve which is not allowed. It puts a bias on the rears so the front brakes do more to keep it from locking up the rears. Even pulling my 36foot fifth wheel there is not enough weight on the rears to keep it from swapping ends on wet roads without the valve. On my voyage from North Alabama when I bought it I slid through an intersection in Savannah Tn.-could not stop and keep it going straight at the same time. Luckily the horn worked and the person in front of me got out of the way-still have nightmares about this. Mine has a 9 speed direct transmission. Good luck with your new toy.

Can't speak for the example on this truck, but my experience with those valves, was, they were brake-limiting valves. You pushed them in for dry roads, and it allowed normal (100% braking) to the steer axle. Pulled the valve out for wet roads, and it limited the braking to 50% on the steers. No, they obviously can't fit that on vehicles today, but if it was built with it in the day, it can be there. Don't necessarily advise using or abusing it, but it's legal to be fitted as OEM on the truck. You could disable it if you like, but it's legal.
