From the moment you ask "What is colour?" to precisely 4 minutes 33 seconds and 4 frames, I am going to use as an educational tool in my classroom. Honestly, sometimes I think TH-cam is a better teacher than I am because of excellent media content like this - thanks Quinn.
As a professional colorist I found this video very entertaining! Most people don’t understand color gamut and it is the biggest difference between nice and cheap televisions and monitors! Solid very informative video for people who know nothing about calibration and color space!
@@ThinkCMYK hmmmm bad take, the technological stuff for geeks is all apart of helping replicate the director and cinematographers vision. This “geek stuff” is used to elevate story amongst many other parts of production. 😂
As a photographer, I am calibrating my monitors with calorimeters for years. You do not need opensource for that. Entry level ones are very cheap nowadays. Last gen also has ambient light sensors in it and switches to different modes. Calibrating once is not enough. If the amount of environmental light changes(day/night or sunset etc), a new calibration is needed. (Unless you are working in a no-natural light source ( windowless) room) Ones with an external sensor built in tries to compensate that for a degree by switching modes due to the detected light. (Note: a calibrated display is less appealing to a home user. Home users often are after vibrant colors, higher contrast, higher brightness and exaggerated whites)
This was such a technical and detailed video, that I had to literally pause and rewatch multiple times to understand. Can’t imagine the kind of research and effort that went into producing this. Superb work.
This raises the bar for tech TH-cam. Thank you! This was not only entertaining, but actually one of the best summaries of color profiles, color spaces and standards. Amazing!
As someone who recently decided it would be 'fun' to learn a bit more about display calibration (still got A LOT to learn), I got to say you did an amazing job simplifying an incredibly complex topic and making it understandable. It definitely helped me make some connections regarding colour that I didn't make previously. Once again, excellent video!
Great video, the pre handmade factory calibration was a bit off because the color and light of the room is important too, calibrating makes it perfect for your room.
After so many years, you are still one of the top tech reviewers brining useful and detailed information and good opinion and analyses on TH-cam. Way to go!!!
As a colour blind person I very rarely tell the difference between calibration settings. I just kind of want someone to tell me "its good, you're not missing out on anything" and trust them.
I only tend to notice these things when it’s REALLY egregious, like being unable to see anything in the GoT season 8 episode. Apart from that, it all blends together.
Can you use Apple TV as only smart tv device without LG webOS? will settings for the LG overlap Apple TV OS or do you need to switch to webOS for tv settings?

Quinn, all of your videos are actually amazing. You cover really unique topics that many others don't, with such a high level of information and amazing videography. Great explanation. Suddenly remember the analog black-and-white TV that i had when i was 8 years old. Most important was to direct the antenna in a certain direction. And wooow we had video transmitted through the air.
I just used the new Apple TV Color Balance feature, and when comparing the results, the beach sand had a slight pink tint in the original settings. I hope it's not just the placebo effect, but the image now looks better. Thanks, Snazzy!

You should test it with Cinema Mode on the TV to really see what the features do. Your standard more test will just fight an inaccurate setting on the display device.
This is soo important to display usage. I bought a cheap 144hz gaming monitor that had a washed out and terrible default setting. Some color expert posted his calibration settings online and I copied them including brightness, sharpness etc etc and now it looks almost as good as my IPS monitor.
I am trying to use it on my parent’s tv but it keeps failing. Is it safe to assume it’s because it is a 3D tv? The pixel structure would be the different from a normal OLED, LED, or LCD.
