25 to 30 squares in a round bale. First year we got a round baler I made 388 bales on dads home quarter. The years before we squared it and dad did most of the hauling. Between 7400 and 10000 bales a year depending on rain. Then we fed sheep with a wheel barrel so we didnt have to pack bales. Everyday. Fricken nuts the time a guy spent compared to now.
Nice video Tyson! That baler looks to be in great condition, almost new, and is making nice bales. With the price of hay, getting this crop baled is worth a fair bit of money to you folks! Have a nice day! 😀
Seems I buy a couple hundred a year. Use a few for calving, sick calves by themselves, a few caught up for shipping, etc. They are handy, but I hate loading and unloading them. Lol 😆.
Now you need a couple of 4 wheel wagons with 8'X16' flat decks to pull behind the baler. Shaun can ride the wagon and stack the hay bales. You will need one more chute to direct the bales up to the wagon deck. Price per bale you mentioned sounds about right BUT that is in US dollars. As far as mechanical handling of square bales, there are accumulators that pull behind the baler for 8 to 12 bales then use a "grabber/claw" unit on a skid steer or tractor loader to pick up and stack the bales on a wagon or trailer.
Identical to mu dads, does about 800 to 1000 bales a year hand stacking on a wagon. I think he bought his in 88 so do the math. I know the knotters have had some parts replaced but otherwise a solid baler. Pulled it behind a 1020 JD or farmall H.
We baled about 9000 “idiot bricks” this year. Our goal is to never touch the bale. We use a Norden accumulator and tie grabber. It bundles them into 15 on edge then the tie grabber ties the bundle together and picks them up. We stack on wagons and deliver to customers and unload with a regular grabber. We get $5-$6 each around here.
We had a 271 when I was a kid LOTS of work. We had hay racks and loaded about 100 bales we pulled racks with the baler in good hay you needed 2 people on the rack.
Those are great balers we have a 275 the deluxe version of the 273 we baled 10000 plus bales for quite a few years now just makes a few bales for calving pens bought 20years ago $600 2nd owner from a 50 acre farm
The good old days. I remember when it was a brand new edition to NH (late 60’s maybe?), see you’ve even got the super sweep pickup. Actually looks new. You’ll have to get the side delivery rake (268?) to go with it 👍
Good day Tyson Dad bought 273 in 76 for 3600. Yes pkup is narrow or driveline is not right. I think 60 stokes/min. At neighbour pulling wagon, 2 on wagon we baled 100/20 minutes. Wow 7/bale 1000 bales Yes hay does look nice Thanks
Thank you .brought back the summers gone by standing behind the baller stacking 10 bales into a pyramid. Late days, dust dirty.straw was dirtiest, stack the bales throw salt between layers ,salt was for wet hay or combustion, can't rebar the reason I was really young ,10 yrs old ,already starting to live in an adult world
20-25 bucks a bale here on the coast. They sell bales of straw at the grocery store for decoration at halloween etc for 75 bucks each. Big squares 300-350
@@Northern_Farmer They are selling to rich horsey girls that pay 1000+ a month to stable a horse, and that price is for people enrolled in a training program....... Cant blame them for the hay pricing. My uncle used to make pretty good money buying hay in the BC interior regions and selling it down here.
Look to make sure pin for plunger stop under baler back of main gearbox grease zert in pin pin likes to freeze up an breaks kotter key an pin falls out when that happens you have no plunger stop when you get out of time bad things happen common problem on 273 any questions just ask sir
Got the same baler and make maybe a 100 a year with it now. Also I made exactly what you are talking about for my skid steer . pick 3 at a time and drop on the trailer to stack works good
I've watched you for several years now and I can't remember ever seeing you bale small bales. Why here instead of the large round bales? The farmer I worked for in my early teens made all small bales. We walked the field and bucked them up onto P/U trucks or once in a great while a wagon. 52 per P/U. Tossing them over your head to get them to the top tier of the truck and to the stacker was tough work for a 13-16 year old kid, especially in the summer sun.
I agree it is in nice shape 😎 I figure if I get back into making squares the inline is the way to go. The one I'm looking at has done baleing for me on and off over the years, my friend is thinking it may be time to retire. So I already know the machine and that it can take windrows like yours no problem👍
I never expected to see a small square baler on your farm! The first baler I ever bought was 273 with a thrower. Not a bad baler, but we outgrew it pretty fast. Skidsteer grapple/accumulator would be worth the investment.
Often wondered if it'd be worth fitting a spider wheel to the outer side of the pickup, perhaps with a hydraulic ram to raise it, or a 12 volt actuator. It's a lot more fun baling them than gathering them!
@@Northern_Farmer Almost 40 years ago we had a little precision chop harvester, a JF FC80. It had a very narrow pickup, and a pair of those wheels. I think the cousin has one lying at the back of a hedge, must ask him.
I remember back in the 70's in the Harvestore magazine there was a add saying nothing drove more kids away from the farm like a square baler.
That is the truth!
I remember hearing this, too.
Thee best time of year to do square bales no bugs no snakes and no heat lol
when I was a kid my dad had 4 bale accumulators me and my 3 brothers
Haha

It does

That's our plan to...I have used probably 100
273 NH chewing hay, they were a great Baler. I upgraded to a 570 high output years ago, but still wish I would have kept the 273 👍🏻
It's a nice baler
Nice looking square bales Tyson
Look into a tow behind accumulator then you could use your loader with an attachment to pick them up and put on a flat bed truck , wagon or trailer
I'd like to just get a wagon to pull behind...
Or those self propelled new holland stackers lol
@@Northern_Farmer $$$$

I have that chute...took it off...previous owner must have pulled a wagon
@@Northern_Farmer You have the chute and a young buck to stack, yes, you just need a wagon or two or three.
Imagine having to pick up each of those bales by hand! I get tired just thinking about it. Ha ha. Nice video Tyson thanks.
I didn't imagine
Nice Tyson, the baler makes nice square bales
Great video Tyson
I still have my dad's Allied stooker for small squares. I try not to use it much...lol. Round bales are the way to go!
They sure are...but a few squares come in handy
Gonna need to buy (and drag) a bale stooker behind the old 273. Shawn could use the exercise. He’d look like Arnold after a single haying season. 💪🏼😁
Haha

Seems to be solid
I still have dad's 1000 NH stack liner. Its ok but it only picks 54 at a time. So lots of trips.

Hay shortage from the north to florida. Bale all you can.
You need a massy or a Heston centre feed 400 plus bales per hour
50 a hour is enough lol

What will you do with the small square Bale's calf sheds?
I have already used about 100 feeding calves in the small corral pens
