    Thanks for the review. As someone who always wanted to play Dune Imperium, but somehow never did, this one is going into my collection and will be my introduction to the game. As a Dune fan for around 40 years, I'm very much looking forward to it!

    Let’s see how long the original stays in print . If this is a stand alone game the original should still get printed . If it doesn’t then this was a replacement.

    Another interesting question is if Uprising will receive its own expansion content, and if that material is back-compatible with the original Imperium (unlikely). Dire Wolf has essentially created two games in the same IP that are distinctive in terms of mechanisms and thematic focus: Imperium presents a broad introduction to the Dune universe (including the Houses of Ix and Tleilaxu) where intrigue, commerce and "research" drive the gamestate whereas Uprising is centered on conflict/combat as the factions fight for final control of Arrakis. It's an interesting choice that the worms which are so central to Dune lore are only employed as a distinct unit in the stand alone expansion.
    I have the impression that Paul Dennen had/has a tremendous amount of ideas and realized that future-proofing all the proposed content between the two films (possibly three) was nigh impossible, hence the need to parcel the design into two related-but-distinct products. Great review, thx! 🖖

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m interested to know when you think that future expansion backwards compatibility is unlikely. I’d be surprised if future expansions weren’t playable with the first game.

    • @thomasromanelli2561
      @thomasromanelli2561 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheDiscriminatingGamer While DW has stated that Uprising is compatible with all previous Imperium products, there are several caveats to that statement in terms of preparing the board (which contains different spaces that have to be partially covered by the CHOAM overlay), recognizing that some portions of the board will not have printed observation posts, the need to curate the conflict cards from other expansions to avoid diluting the battle icon mechanic and that only one character will be eligible to use the Foldspace cards which have otherwise been removed from Uprising. That's a lot of details to remember correctly.
      For the diehard Dune fan I'm sure it's great having the ability to create a pseudo-modular gaming experience to a degree, but at the cost of an increasing organizational (and storage) burden. I can only imagine that if Uprising receives additional content, especially in the form of new mechanics as opposed to an expanded card pool, the integration of that material with previous versions becomes increasingly problematic in terms of player convenience and balance. For this practical reason, I think it is a strong possibility that future content is likely to be exclusive to Uprising, allowing for a deeper exploration of the distinct mechanics and themes relevant to that product.
      And if Denis Villeneuve gets to make a third film, we could see the IP mature further into a Dune: Imperium - Bloodline game (extrapolated from the Children of Dune source material) or perhaps a Dune: Imperium - Legacy entry, which will add new elements to combine the previous games into a super-campaign.

    Oh what a great game. I love the original and only have just the base game, just have not gotten around to getting the expansions yet. However for me there are 2 things that set this one apart from the original, Spies and Conflict Cards.
    The original game I was always getting blocked out of key places that I needed to go to and here with the spies I have a way in. the way in may not always be there but there is a chance.
    Conflict Cards in the original, especially the 3rd conflict have a bunch of victory points and that is a good way to victory. This one there are not as many from what I have seen, so winning conflicts is not as important but the worms and pairing conflict cards can greatly help. This makes it so getting victory points from other paths more valid.
    For me I think that having both games is totally worth it. You can use the base original game as a teaching game as it appears to be a little lighter. But this would only be needed for maybe new players that have not played a lot of games. Then bust out Uprising.
    If I did not own the original and I was looking to get this game and was on the fence I would get Uprising. I think that it is a little better of a game. Feels a little more complete.
    But in the end I will have both and I know that I will still play both. My lighter game group I will probable still play the original. My heavier gaming group, well bring on the spies and worms.
    Great review Cody.

      I thought I saw one of the designers say that this is really more "Dune Imperium 2.0". Same game with some significant tweaks to address some minor issues with the original (sounds like the Spies fall into that category) as well as new features. Sounds like a reasonable description.

    I have the original with expansions, so I’ll skip this new version. However, this seems like it could’ve been a great opportunity to have made this new version part of a Dune Legacy (similar to Clank Legacy). But maybe/hopefully that’s in the works and we don’t need to wait years for other movies to come out.

      @@TheDiscriminatingGamer A non-endgame intrigue that gives you 2vps for something you will most likely have a reasonable access to - that can be top-decked last turn for a massive lead on top of potentially multi-scoring conflicts?
      Losing because someone jumped 5vp up on a last turn because of a topdeck is just bonkers. Will it happen often? No, but when iot does on a close-tied game, it's just sad for everyone, winner included.
      Base game end-game intrigues for 2VPs had A VERY specific requirements. This doesn't. Not to mention you couldn't just play them for two separate chances of getting a vp.
