Please don't apologize. You are not a disappointment. Mental health is hard to go through. Depression is so debilitating. You got this and please know you are loved AND you have touched the lives of many people (adults and students alike). Sending hugs your way xoxo

Hi. I'm sorry to hear the story. I'm in my 28th year teaching, and I was able to avoid the stress of student-teaching altogether. Here's my advice which may work for some: avoid student-teaching if possible. My degree is not in education; I entered education through the back door. I entered cold-turkey as a substitute teacher. Suddenly, I received lots of requests (from regular teachers) to fill in for them. I was always busy, and I believe it was the best way to learn how the "system" works; it worked out to be a sort of on-the-job training. While doing this, I took the courses to get certified . . . and here I am. Viewing your story, young lady, made me glad teaching wasn't my original ambition. I know I wouldn't have handled student-teaching, especially with the demands of being a college student.

I've been a substitute teacher for the past 4 years. At this point, I'm deciding whether or not to get my credential. I would tell anyone thinking about teaching: substitute first. Sub at different school districts, at different grade levels. Try and long-term sub. Talk with teachers. Don't just student teach at one school or at one grade level and then become a full-time teacher. If you do that, I think you might end up being one of those teachers who quits after his or her first year. And, yes, the student teachers I've met from time-to-time seemed very stressed out, drained, resentful of having to work for free.

Hi ! If a student has a job already as a sub or teacher's aide then they have to student teach, does that count since they are getting paid?

Student teaching is a wonderful experience for thousands of people including me. Most universities do not allow students to take courses while student teaching. In fact, I have never EVER heard of this....EVER and I have been a certified teacher since 1994 and a teacher educator since 2004. Your substitute teaching allowed to learnon the job and that is what student teaching is supposed to do. It can be a stressful time because you are in the field and sometimes the support is not there but that can also happen as a full-fledged educator. I believe that student teaching should be for an entire school year so students can be in the environment for an entire academic year, but I definitely would not advocate for skipping student teaching. I am glad that worked well for you though and so appreciative of you as a fellow educator.

Hi @concepcionledezma5027. I was able to avoid the traditional student teaching path by completing an online teacher education program as well. I already had a master's degree in communication when I started subbing full time. I decided I loved subbing and wanted to teach. The teacher ed program I completed required a certain number of hours of field experience and I was able to count some of my subbing experience. I was not able to student teach in my local schools so I worked with a mentor and a 4th grade class virtually. I created the lesson plans and had one week to teach the lessons and administer pre and post math tests and collect the data. It was a little stressful, but because I had been subbing for almost an entire school year I felt confident in what I had been practicing as a sub. I have been subbing this past school year, 2022-2023 as well and feel confident in my skills to be able to teach in an elementary school. I have been interviewing recently, (4 interviews in a month) with no luck in getting a teaching job. Do you have any advice for me that I can use as I continue my job search and the interview process? I am inspired by your post a year ago and I look forward to reading your reply soon. Thank you! Leslie

As a teacher educator and just a human being, I am so sorry you had this horrific experience. In our state, students must complete all of their courses before student teaching. I am surprised that you were allowed to take four courses and student teach. Even eons ago, when I student taught, my university did not allow students to take courses while student teaching. I can't imagine you preparing to teach each week and taking courses. I am so glad that you did graduate. I wish you well in all of your endeavors. Find the lesson in this experience and please do not be hard on yourself. Thank you for sharing.❤

@@teacher_in_houston Wow. That really makes no sense. The courses are the foundation for student teaching like a residency for doctors. Why would they have you learning coursework at the same time. That is what practicums are for. Those are one credit hour courses that are paired with three-credit hour courses. The practicum gives you the opportunity to practice what you learned in those courses. But, actual student teaching is the finale. I'm surprised that program is accredited if that is how it is structured.

Thanks for sharing:) I appreciate the fact that you shared your experience with me and my fellow internet citizens because -- although this comment section is supportive as far as i can tell -- comment sections are often not supportive, and you shared your experience without knowing if you would be supported or hated, or even just ignored by the algorithm, or just ignored by people. And honestly, your journey reminds me so much of my own. I have failed multiple times. I have shut down multiple times. This has to be more common than it feels. I find that when people discuss depression and similar things, we often leave out the parts where depression really can just ruin things and blow everything up in ways that cannot just be undone with a smile or a therapy session. I really get it, man. Your video has really hit me at a good time!

You're so cute. Your generation is too hard on yourselves. You're not going to have all of your stuff together Day 1, Week 1, Year 1. The fun is in the mistakes. Were any students hurt? No. Those teachers were allowing you to flounder instead of flourish. In this day, when teachers are in short supply, those "professional teachers" should've provided you better guidance. They made mistakes (and probably continue making mistakes), too. You are great!

This is a tough time to get in to teaching, harder than ever, here. There is a lot of stress, sensations, responsibilities, and overwhelming demands in the school system.
Maybe you could teach small groups as a Teacher Aid, work with small groups on reading instruction.
You are always on, as a teacher. It’s a lot.
All the lesson planning, and all the responsibilities.
I think it is really essential to shadow a teacher work with them for a long enough time and absorb all their routines templates and tricks.
Also, if you like, maybe be a substitute teacher, or teacher aid.
Being a teacher is a huge job these days, even for veteran teachers.
Failing is learning, it is a part of learning.
It is amazing you can tell this story authoritatively.
I’m think you just froze, fawn mode, “fight or flight” , just self preservation, natural response.
Thanks for sharing your true story. I was 30 years in, was always similar in my own mind, as to what you had felt.
Just give self grace and kindness

Mental illness happens! I have depression. There was so much work doing lesson plans etc. I had to just substitute which I have done for years. Lots less stress in subbing. I can't deal with full time. I love subbing as it is different classes.

Thank you so much for having the courage to share your story. I can tell it was not easy but I just wanted to let you know your video made me feel a lot better. I'm going through a similar situation and just yesterday, I finally had the courage to speak up about it. I felt SO terrible for saying it in the moment because it made me feel that I was weak for not being able to handle the work load but now after watching your video, I'm glad I stood up for myself. Because you're right, no title or degree is worth our sanity and health. I hope you'll continue to recover from this experience.

You are so strong for telling this, and like my mom says, talking about it is really therapeutic and I only see how strong you are. Remember that each failure is honestly an opportunity to be better the next time.
You are not a disappointment, you put your health first and that is much more important than what anyone thinks about you.
Do not let anyone put you down.
There will always be more opportunities, and I know this is not the end. It is only you against you. Don't compare yourself to anyone else.

I had a traumatic experience student teaching as well....Long story short, I went through a strong depression for 2 years after with no attempt to teach (although I did tutor) . While I was a teacher for a short amount of time eventually, I'm currently transitioning into another field that will (hopefully) be better for my mental health. Thank you for sharing your story. Hi, and thank you for sharing your story. I know I'm about a year late in adding this, but I just wanted to say to you that none of this is your fault. College stress is REAL. I was going to a university in Virginia, then moved to California during my junior year, and I was also forced to change my major because I wasn't able to do student teaching in California (being that my college couldn't arrange for it from Virginia). At first I was distraught about not being able to get my certification back then, but looking back I am SO happy that I didn't go through the student teaching route. With the pressure of moving to an familiar place, being a newly wed, being away from family, and also trying to deal with other college courses was already a lot on my plate. Fast forward a few years, I am currently going through ECAP to get my certification and now I feel MUCH better about teaching than before and I feel better prepared to give students the attention and focus they deserve. I would say for people who are in college, don't think that it's the end all if you can't get everything accomplished. Sometimes its better to wait and take the time to take care of yourself first.

Sorry to add late, but that guide is called a mentor. Thank you for sharing your experience. I already know student teaching is the most challenging part and I have feared that part of it for years now (avoiding it), but I have to do it within the next year or so or I lose all of my hard work that I did for my program ): Guilt, shame, and anxiety are strong feelings, but we find the strength to move forward. I remember failing a class at university (my writer's block was so bad), but my professor was very sweet, but still kept his standards of being fair to all (which I respect & admire), but although I failed, & it felt like the end of the world. It's not.

I was overwhelmed during student teaching. I had 2 small children and a husband. There were weekends when I stayed at a hotel to lesson plan because the pressure of having a family demanding me all the time became too much to handle. My husband supported me during that time with what he could. He was working nights to support us and cleaned when he could (kids make mess often).

Ed. Studies major here! I finished one semester of student teaching but I was pursuing a dual cert so I had a second semester of student teaching I finished every class except for that very last student teaching sem. It hurts to think about and I am disappointed in myself because I was so close and I am a mom now so it would be a great schedule. I could probably still get the cert in early childhood special ed but honestly I would never want to feel as overwhelmed as I felt when I was teaching. I’m an introvert teaching was exhausting for my personality type I just felt like the light was always on like I was a performer for a play almost remembering what I was going to say for this and that and planning everything out is just not me I’m not type A by any means! Some people can do it and mad respect to them! I experienced so much anxiety teaching and all my student teaching buddies were on anti anxiety meds and if my job is so bad I have to take meds to get through the day I don’t want that job 😂 I think it is a shame they even do student teaching my school required you to take full time college courses, stay teacher contract hours unpaid so I still had to work.. recipe for depression, how could anyone get things planned with all of that going on! Working on my masters in nursing now!

Student teaching is verryyy different in different programs and states. In my program sac state,no 10 in the country, we student teach right away, in the same class the whole time. Experiences are vastly different. Some cts watch and some walk out.. Mine is super nice and loves being a CT. Both semesters are student teacher. Something thag I notice that's hugely different is you can't get into a credential program without a degree already.

Hello, I’m about to start my PD’s at UHD Northwest Campus. If I go through with everything I would be getting my Bachelors in EC-6 with bilingual supplement. Can you please share the alternate route you had to take in order to graduate on time? And what you had to do afterwards to become a teacher. I love teaching and want to get my degree but I don’t see myself surviving student teaching (mostly because it’s not paid) as well as taking 3 classes in the same timeframe.

After I graduated with a different degree in Applied Learning. Two years later, I did an alternative teacher certification program at Houston Community College. Their program is two years where the first year, you take courses about education and teaching and the second year, you teach and people come to observe you and you take your tests and you complete your certification.
