  • It's the Halloween season so I thought I'd talk about some of the spooky stuff in The Sopranos. I had a few scenes on my mind so I decided to have this video be three sequences dedicated to each individual nightmare. Christopher's nightmare was a scene that really made me realize just how special this show was when I first saw it. I also love how brief Paulie's nightmare is but nothing is as scary to me as Tony's nightmare. Hope you enjoy this video and have a great day!

Smells like Halloween! It was great to revisit these scenes and they are some of the most well-crafted sequences in television. I plan on doing a video on The Shining next week so stay tuned for that. Hope you enjoyed the video and have a great day!

I loved the juxtaposition between Chris’s nightmares and Tony’s. Chris’s were very surface value like the one with Emil, like the kind of nightmares a child would have where it’s blatantly told to you why it’s scary. “You killed me.” “What do you want me to do about it now?” Tony’s were way more deep and subtle, showing how much more of a deep thinker he is compared to Chris being more simple minded. Tony’s introspective nature would be seen as weakness by the mob, hence his need to tamp it down around them or downplay his mental grief. His own brain taunts him at night about how he’s lying to himself about the awareness of his predicaments. Chris has a taste of the self loathing and loss of direction/deep introspection too with his arc dilemma, childhood trauma, etc., but it’s not on the same scale as Tony. It’s probably compounded by the fact that Tony’s also a boss and not just a foot soldier like Chris in the early seasons so he has even more of a reputation of pseudo masculine strength and emotional steadfastness to uphold.

This is a great observation. Tony’s nightmare is the result of years of choices he made while Christopher’s dream was a product of his first murder and his brain trying to make sense of it.

@@LavenderRex7705Good point. Tony’s had more time to reflect on his past whereas Chris is freshly dealing with what he’s done in order to climb the ranks. Like a child he’s scared and confused, even if consciously what he’s doing makes sense, subconsciously it holds a heavier burden.

Ya know I’m not gonna lie, the car dream sequence reminds me of the “Transport” episode of the Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared TV series where they’re traveling in the car and the world slowly turns into a nightmarish landscape while the road they travel is empty (much like Tony’s dream)

The analysis of the 3rd dream was fantastic imo and perfectly added onto the central theme of Season 4; Tony and Carmella's marriage. It gave a whole layer of context that boosted not only my appreciation of the dream that I initially didn't get, but my favorite season of the series.

It’s such a dreadful scene that was brought about by Tony’s choices.

@LavenderRex7705 Seeing Livia's blacked out face is ominous. But with the context you added about her being the from of Tony's pictured woman; devoid of any traits or agency but just a vessel of sympathy and love (ie; what his mother never gave him) makes it ring deeper.

Can’t remember if the timing lines up, but I interpreted it as Ralph being able to evolve as a person (getting his shit together after his son’s accident), and Tony being unable to grow himself (and perhaps resenting Ralph for it).
