Hello Painters🎨 Have you wondered how to use charcoal in mixed media paintings? Whether you should seal the charcoal before painting on top and how to do it. In this video I would like to answer those questions and show you what I do when working with charcoal and mixed media. Why would we want to seal in the charcoal before painting on top with acrylics or oils? What happens if we don’t ? Have a lovely ad creative week 🌻🌻🌻 - Marie Louise
I work with charcoal quite often and find it's a great medium for expression. I love the moods I can evoke with just a few simple strokes. Yes. It smudges very easily. But that's part of the appeal for me cause I love to work with my fingers and spread the loose charcoal powder around. So much fun to work with! Excellent advice on sealing charcoal. Spot on!! Cheers from New England. 😊
This is EXACTLY what i was looking for! Thank you very much! My first charcoal/acrylic painting will begin in the morning! I will experiment with it. 🎨🖌️
Thank you Marie Louise for always sharing your techniques. You do such a great job of explaining things so clearly. I love your work and always look forward to your posts. 🎨🖌️☀️🌙⭐️🌎
Hi , Thank you so much for sharing your informative video! I do charcoal and wanted to know how to use acrylic with my charcoal sketch. I will check your 5 tips video thanks .❤
I found this site at just the right time in my life. So much great inspiration and help. I have been doing very tight graphite portraits for the last few years, abandoning any use of color. You have given me courage to get out my watercolors, neocolors and gouache. I am not in a situation to use acrylic so I will make do with the supplies on hand. Do you ever use gouache? Thank you so much for your generosity.
Yes definitely use what you already have and get creative with that. I haven’t really used gouache although I have some… saving them for later I guess (like so many other art supplies but I really should get them out) Thanks for sharing and watching 🌻🌻
Hello Marie and Thank you so much for this wonderful instructive tips. Can I use charcoal with Oil paint? I mean after the oil paint completely dries and use fixative?
As always, another wonderful video!! I LOVE charcoal! Its helped me recently to get a few things in my head onto paper. I also love water soluble graphite, which looks awesome if, before sealing it, I use a hard roller and roll some white over it to get some streaks of white but them then gorgeous interesting gray from the graphite. Same with charcoal, but charcoal is a lot darker so, gotta watch how much. I use the fixative spray, but really love the tip about the gloss medium. As I have had issues with it pushing through. Does the gloss affect how I paint over it? Just curious. Thanks SO much for all your help!!🥰
I've had good luck with non-aerosol fixative. I think it's SpectraFix? Not as noxious as the aerosol brands though since the mist is heavier than an aerosol, I put my painting flat for this stage. Kind of a problem with a really large painting.

absolutely gorgeous - what color and brand soft pastels are you using please - I have been having an issue finding a good 'burnt sienna' color.
