Windows XP is (mostly) safe on the Internet in 2024

  • This is what REALLY happens when you connect XP to the internet in 2024. No instantaneous infection. Why? Well, today, almost everyone uses a router to connect to the Internet. It'd be really stupid to not use one if you just want to connect for personal use...

My biggest issue with that video is the video creator is making weird statements "I don't think Windows XP's firewall is actually very secure"(???) or "I guess this is a stealer" or opening Process Monitor without understanding what it all means (like getting shocked at RegOpenKey or Image File Execution Options).
It's ok for people to not have in-depth knowledge about security, but it's annoying when these people pass off their incomplete knowledge to others.

The video itself had proper and clear warnings that the VM had a direct connection to the internet and that the VM firewall was disabled but most of the articles that talked about this video were misleading and wouldn't warn the readers about such modifications being done to the VM.
Eric also clearly explained that using such an old OS behind a router is safe as none of the ports that might be opened on such an old machine are accessible without port redirection.
I'd rather blame the medias who wrote these misleading articles which were mostly containing clickbait titles with the sole interest of making more money.

    • @laglife
      @laglife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

I don't recall him (directly) explaining that XP is safe to use with a router and firewall. Yes, he did explain the modifications at the beginning of the video but he still used a clickbait title, and I don't think that most of the 500K+ now people that have watched it understand there is a huge difference just by using a router.

    • @enzoduvernay4540

@@laglife Yeah you're right on the fact that most of the people who watched it might not have the knowledge that is required to fully understand his video, though I think the way this video was used in most of the publicly available articles and TikTok videos isn't the way Eric intended it to be used in so I'd understand for those who don't have enough knowledge to properly understand his video but I wanna blame those who made it even more misleading for views and money.

It's even simpler than firewall. It's about port forwarding. If something comes from outside world then router doesn't know where to forward it unless you have specifically defined routing rules. Which is nice that since default there are no rules defined where to forward to, then it's safe by default. That alone already stops a lot of bad stuff. Of course there is firewall also but that's extra security in addition to that and is not always guaranteed with all routers - best to check what you got from your ISP.

And I don't visit malicious sites but only what I know. For example I google for firefox after fresh install and then only click on officual firefox page, I don't click random download sites. With firefox I visit those sites that I know such as Age of Empires 1/2 forums that I have known for like 20 years. So far nothing bad have happened. I guarantee a 98 system would still be infected if exposed to the open internet. They'll infect one just because. Also I've literally never seen a situation where every single possibly dangerous port is open, pretty sure anyone still trying to use XP in 2024 has at least a basic understanding that this would be a bad idea.

@@laglife "pretty sure anyone still trying to use XP in 2024 has at least a basic understanding that this would be a bad idea.
" well, then you're wrong! because if they were competent enough, they wouldn't be using windows xp in the first place. that simple.

No one has made their own internet setup back in the day, so no ports would be open anyway if the infrastructure was done by someone competent. If it wasn't then it being XP, 10, Linux or MacOS doesn't matter, that PC is exposed.
Also it only matters that it's a vulnerable Windows PC to make part of a botnet for example. The fact that it runs Windows 95 or 10 doesn't matter, just that it gets infected.

"Yo you wanted to prove this car's tires will not deflate by themselves.
They didn't deflate but since you looked for 'how to tear a hole in a tire' it makes your proof invalid."
      Bro...
He claims the pc won't get infected, how is it a search about something that could get it infected proof that he faked it being safe? If anything, it should be the opposite.

I was initially going to try seeing if any ad filled site would dump malware into my system, decided to not after realizing that would be stupid since Chromium doesn't allow that anymore

Thank you for exposing this dude. That video scared me from using my old dell for playing CS. All i have is a laptop with hdmi and CS with 60hz is no fun. Now i can use the DVI and run the same monitor at 144hz. And yes, i am that cheap especially with the price of modern pcs.

The video really wasn't misleading whatsoever. I'm guessing you don't know much about how networking works, because he clearly explained the experiment.
