- In June I'll be hiking 77 miles along the Cumbria Way in the Lake District. I need to to take my lightweight camping gear for the trip and in this video I test out a few bits in preparation. Gear like the Durston Xmid tent and the thermarest Vesper quilt.

I spent 6 days in the Lakes last week with a mixture of wild camping, campsite camping and ended with a B&B to spoil myself. Loved it. Definitely enjoyed the wild camping the most.
Looking forward to your video on Cumbrian way 3 top you tubers together will be great. Hopefully give me some ideas for dales way enjoy your freedom
Did the Cumbria Way last year , very little need for carrying much food and you'll get away with minimal water carry, loads of places to get both on trail , also gas !
Also some cracking pubs ! Wainwright's in Keswick a must visit ! Good luck lads !

12:50 Enjoy. Just did the West Highland Way with the Durston Mid X Solid 2P and like you say it's great for a quick pitch with 4 pegs as a cooking shelter. I cut the 'gates' off the four clips to facilitate attaching and detaching the inner.

Greetings to all my hiking brothers and sisters in the UK from Northern California. I wouldn’t mind hiking in the UK sometime, it looks interesting and beautiful. Good luck on your upcoming trip Paul and bring at least one steak, I love seeing you cook them on the trail. Might not be possible if you are going ultralight though.

Great video. I laughed at the bit about the zipper bag and washing and re-using, The last time I was out, I poured a tin of chilli in to a zipper bag and made an attempt to wash the bag at home for re-using. The Mrs mocked me for a week after.

Having done quite a few trails including the Cumbria Way my advice would be;
Get as much walking done as you can before the trail. With the amount of gear you own take the lightest option you have. Only take what you really need, absolute minimum. Also your footwear, it’s not the time to try something new out, use what is least likely to cause you you any problems.

Awesome to see this. I have a Durston XMid Pro 1P and the Tarptent Notch Li. My Durston has a bit more space and weighs less. The Notch Li is a true double wall yet slightly more finicky to set up. The Notch also takes slightly more space in my pack. Love them both but the DCF Durston Pro has a slight lead on my affections.

I agree on the Durstan Xmid. I’ve had mine in rough conditions and it has held up well. I did move on from the Altra Lone Peaks and now rock Hoka Speedgoats. I am considering a quilted air mat, either your Sea To Summit or the REI.
I’ve recently bought the xmid 2, only pitched it in the garden, it’s a palace for one person. 🤣 nice to see you do a camp on here, seeing it in the wind has given me some confidence to get out with it in some crapper weather. Thanks for uploading mate. 🏕️

I reckon the tarp setup looked the most stable.
Love Altras and 'barefoot' shoes in general. Dumped walking boots years ago and haven't looked back. Happy feet makes a happy camper! What I would say, if you're not used to zero drop shoes i.e. don't use them as your day-to-day shoe, I would be careful of jumping straight into them for a long distance walk. You don't want to knacker your achilles.

Multi-day stuff gets to be addictive. You'll love it. It might be type 2 love, but there'll be moments of type 1.
And yeah, I'd suggest site camping more than not. To be honest, a lot of small farm sites arent that far off wild camping anyway. And lots of em have a pub fairly close, too.
Amazing, can't wait for my first backpacking trip. Rucksack arrived today and tomorrow a Naturehike VIK 1 is coming and we are all set!

Hi Paul, love your videos. Would be great to see a bit more of how you manage your water collection/filtering systems while on your trips.
Tip for taking bulky dehydrated meals on multi-day trips: before you go open them up and move the food into smaller ziplock bags (or silicon ones if you like). Take just one of the yellow pouches with you, and transfer the food in for rehydrating each night. Will save a ton of space in the pack, and weighs a little less.
it doesnt matter when you are pensioner going out for one night every month, like paul does. you can take literally anything for 3 miles from your car.

Planning my food and gear. I make my own dehydrated food for my dinners so much nicer and you know what you are eating❤. I have the Durston 1P Solid it performs really well in windy and wet weather

I walked the Cumbria way last year, loved it. Made a detour upto angle tarn which was definitely worth while. Heading down to to the Tour du Mont Blanc in three weeks. Have fun on your walk!

I love Altra's and VivoBarefoot. Takes a while to get used to, but now anything with a heel makes my back ache. The way to go
You were lucky there, at 13:32 there appears to be a mad axeman running behind you in the gloom! I'm planning on doing half the Cumbria Way this year and getting fit enough to do the full thing next year.

I've just bought an x-mid 2 solid for my Pennine way trip with my daughter next year, I'm impressed with it, the fly flaps a bit but the poles and overall structure are extremely stable, it's huge for a 2 person tent with 2 big vestibules and wide/long enough to fit 2x 25" long pads in.....and it weighs the same (approx 1.2kg with pegs/full guylines setup) as my force ten helium 100 "coffin" lol. And it doesn't scrimp on storage pockets either (4 in total)
I used my altra lone peak's for the first time on the Cumbria Way as well, super comfy but deffo take a little getting used to you'll enjoy having a heal again while you rest after, but I don't think I'll go back to anything that's not 0 drop for long distance again over 500 miles on these now and it's been a breeze how comfy and light they are

I noticed when striking the tent you unzipped the doors to remove your poles. I found there is no need especially if windy, just remove guys and the odd corner peg and the tent just ‘falls over’ recovering the poles after dealing with the tent. “ Simples”. Have a great time on the Cumbria way ATB
Hi Roger. I have a slight mod on my tent. I have little shoes that connect to the handles of my poles so I don’t have to pitch tip upwards. I tend to experience wind on my camps so don’t want to risk a pole tip going through my fly sheet. It takes an extra 30 seconds but gives me piece of mind.

Hi Paul. I have just completed most of the cumbria way on Monday this week. Just thought I would let you know the path between Dalston and Carlisle is still closed for gas works. There is an alternative route on the other side of the river but it's very overgrown with thorn bushes which can take its toll on you and your gear, we were advised not to walk the road either due to traffic. So we called it a day at Dalston to return when the path is open to finish the last 4 miles or so. Have a good trip and enjoy it.
I wouldn't bother with that last bit. Nothing to see after the delights of the Lake District.

Paul, I can only advise to wear the Altras pretty much every day between now and you multi-day hike. Yes, the wide toe box is fantastic. There are pros and cons for zero drop. I don't want to get into that here as it may kick off a 'war'. However, you do need to get your feet and legs (calves) used to the zero drop. It's very different and will put stress on parts of your body that you have not experienced before. - Enjoy your hike.
Thanks mate. I’ve been wearing them a couple of weeks. I tend to wear flat shoes anyway for the most part however not wide toe box. So far I’ve not notice too much discomfort and my knees feel loads better.
Having used the x mid up in Scotland recently in 40mph gusts, I would say put your trust in it, I’d take 10 stakes though just in case.

I love my altras I use speed lock laces just press the button and pull tight and their done

I would recommend you do a 15-20 mile walk local with all your kit. Hope you have a wonderful hike. Long distance trails are awesome.
The durston is a great tent, the space you get is amazing. Did the cape wrath trail in mine just a couple of weeks ago and was very happy with it.
I’ve also got a Durston and doing the CWT in September. Doing lots of prep but interested to know how many days food you originally took thanks 😊
@@MrDavidh37 I took 8 firepot meals, a summit to eat dessert that I had, 3 Tentmeals meals and a pack of ramen also loads of snacks. To be honest I don't eat that much when on trail so I ended up with one firepot, 3 tent meals and the ramen left over. I ate in pubs and stuff like that when I could. The food amount for me is always a problem as I just bring too much so for next time I'll just buy stuff along the way if I need. But if you want to be cheaper and not eat out then you might need more than what I brought.
Four days to start and then top up 2 days at each resupply

I did it Sept 21, just after Hadrian’s wall, I much prefer multi day hikes to one nighter's, more fulfilling.
The Cumbria Way is a nice one, nothing too challenging, I made a slight tweak to go over Skiddaw, where I had the same blustery, you’ve just had, but worth it for the stunning views. I was wild camping, its the best way to do it.
Packing light and only what is needed is key - I’ve still to master that or even get close. 18Kg tw😟

I suspect you will be aware, but there is a dedicated harvey map too if you don't mind the scale (1:40000), beats several OS maps, there waterproof too (is that important in the lakes ?).
Hi Paul, I walked the CW last month also using the Durston. I couldn't believe how well the tent performed. Had zero condensation even on nights with no wind. Hope you enjoy the walk

Paul I camp every second weekend but I always have a pub lunch if I can mate.😉
As I said before, you will get hooked on the long distance backpacking. Try Scotland next and then maybe some of the French GRs.
When you are camping each night you get a different routine from one nighters. Need to pack a bit more carefully in the morning and you take less.

Another great video im at the stage of moving to a 1-2 man size tent now having used a lanshan 1 style tent and now i know ive got the bug im wanting a bit more space for when we head into autumn so watching this video has confirmed i must seek out the mythical durston x-mid 2 as my night cat ultralight albeit great value is just tight on space so seeing how this tent stood up is brilliant , may i ask which brand freezer bags you used with your porridge ( and where to purchase) as all the ones ive tried so far have failed my tests, i have looked on amazon but the price of some of the freezer bags are fairly expensive so dont want to purchase lots for them to fail ( again) - thanks for your great work which has lit my passion for wildcamping and im sure many many more too - keep up the great work your a you tube legend mate 👍😇- John

650 mil pot and BRS3000T to save some weight. I’d also bring some trail runners. Boots are gonna feel mighty heavy.
5 days. Gas vs Alcohol. If you're going to do pub dinners most nights and just cook breakfast then alcohol may win over on weight, but for sure, gas wins for 5 days of cooking all your meals. I average 30Ml alcohol or 13g of gas per day cooking breakfast+dinner. So 5 days = 150ml or 65g. 150ml is about 200g vs 65g is 205g so it's a wash but if any of those meals are not cooked it swings it towards alcohol. Given its June you'd likely not make too many brews, probably go with a little alcohol?
I just did a 5 day trip and I began with cooking my dinner BUT by day 3 I was eating my lunch at 11am and starving by 3pm so you probably will be seeking pub dinners for the bulk and so probably only cook 3 days and so probably alcohol wins on weight. It's one thing to do an overnighther and a dehydrated meal but the longer trips you find hunger eventually gets you to a big proper meal and your carried food ends up not used.
Rookie question, wouldn't it have been better to come down off the top of the hill a little to get out of the worst of the wind?
Nice one mate, I’ve been wearing lone peaks for a few years now, love them personally. Zero drop may take a bit of a transition period as you may suffer some calf pain initially as they build up strength. Worth persevering though imo.

@@ASBO_LUTELY most shoes have a drop in mm from heel to toe. In Altra your heel and toes are at the same level in a more natural position.

Just curious. Have you tried to use the jetboil pot with the alcohol stove? One would imagine that the fluxring helps with the alcohol stoves efficiency and boiling times

Hi Paul, I get knee pain when hiking and was wondering if the zero drop shoes have made that much of a difference that it’s worth me swapping my shoe out for them?
I always wondered while watching your video's. Why are you so separated? You are there with two mates, but you cook and eat separately, drink your beer separately, seems like you also enjoy the view separately. Any reason for it? When I'm out with my mates we always share. Besides it being more fun (in my opinion anyway), you can also share the load. EG you don't need three cooking setups for three people. Anyway, not judging, just wondering. Cheers buddy

For gas usage..Is it best to boil your water on full blast until boil or slightly longer time on a smaller flame until boil.
Don't use it at full blast, then you're just wasting gas as more of the flame/heat is going out of the sides
When you camp in wales/Snowdonia, do you have to ask permission, and if not where can you camp
