Trekked over the rockies years ago (pack it in, pack it out - leave no trace), we made our own boil in the bags by decanting tinned meals/produce into ziploc bags. Fold them squeeze out all the air, seal them & then double bag them (for protection). When warming, wrap the bag in a bit of foil to protect it from direct heat from side of pan and hey presto, meal and drinking water.

One easy way to save money is to take a step back and check if maybe you have G.A.S.: Gear Aquisition Syndrome. The more videos you watch about gear, the more inclined you are to want that gear and the more you lose sight of the fact that the gear you have is usually already better than what you really need to have fun camping.
I suffered from that cr8p in photography where watching people using the latest models of camera and lenses constantly made me feel that my stuff was not as good as it could be. But in reality, it was already ten times better than what I actually needed for my purposes. Once I realised that I stopped buying new stuff and really only upgraded when something broke.

Totally agree with Paul on these advice tips. One thing he needed to emphasize is to not BUY gear for conditions you MAY go camp in, but for the conditions you KNOW you're going to camp in. For the "May go" either borrow if you can, or find a place that might rent what you need.

My gear contains some really clever stuff from a budget place like Decathlon ( running gear, down jacket ) 3FUL ( Lanshan 2Pro ) and so on, or high-end buy-once-cry-once gear. But you are not getting better memories, more fun or a more thrilling adventure in much more expensive gear. Just go out. A sleeping bag and an insulating air bed is all you need in a nights like these at the moment. Mom‘s leftovers for dinner and a decent garage beer makes you feel like a king in a million star hotel.

Wild camping or camping in general (on sites) is still the most inexpensive holiday in the UK & if you get good weather in a nice spot, you'll never go back to other forms of holiday.
It can be done cheap (in summer). Sub £400 for gear that will last 10 years.
    Get out there.

Just bought my first tent in 25 years, my last one being a one man Terra Nova. The tent I just bought, a Vango Banshee 300 cost me less than the Terra Nova! A first look at it tells me it’s built to last and will do a UK 3 season wild camp any day of the week. In my opinion the cost of living crisis, like many recent so called “emergencies” is entirely manufactured and leading down a very unpleasant future. A future where the freedom’s we enjoy especially wild places will be severely restricted………but that’s a different story.

Saving money is just as it has always been. The "secret" in all aspects of life is SIMPLIFY. If you don't require lots of fancy gear...then the absurd prices won't be a bother. It is just the same with all other aspects of life.
As for myself, on most trips I use a 2 metre x 3 metre tarp, pitched in a half-pyramid configuration, for shelter. I use an off-brand Chinese knockoff inflatable sleeping pad (about 1/4 the price of the "big" brands). For a sleeping bag, in the warmer months, I use 1 or 2 synthetic sleeping bag liners...sometimes teamed with a bivy cover. In colder temps, I use a (synthetic insulation) bag, 25 degree (F)...that I have had for 25 years. Still works a treat. Other gear in my pack is commonly improvised, rather than purchased from the outdoor robbery stores. I no longer cook on trail, so I need no stove.
Etc., etc., etc. Simplify and improvise - that will do the best for you.

I am so glad I have kept my little cheap 4 person tent. It worked in all weathers without leaking. Until a bad storm that hit the UK a few years back, that flooded every camper in a tent out, where I was. Needs water proof spraying. Kept it but was originally going to give it away. Now car camp and tent camp since that day. Love the out doors. On a camping festival at the mo. I sleep so well in the outdoors compared to home. Good tips to save money and get started. Another tip, use what you have, start with small ventures, then build towards buying lighter kit, down the road.

I'm glad you raised the comment about quilts being easier to make than bags yet costing more, I've been puzzled by this for a while now. I get there is tech involved that makes them ultra warm and ultra light, but it's just a piece of fabric at the end of the day, that doesn't need cutting to a mummy shape and doesn't need a zip. I'll be giving the method of sleeping with the bag open now that I have a really good mat (the SeaToSummit Comfort plus). I still want to build my own little cookset too as I loved your video that you made about that one.

Hi there, I've belatedly seen your comment, so here is a wee comparison video from Paul - I think this may be the Alpkit tent you refer to. It's not a review,, but he has some positive things to say about if! Good luck, Nigel, Scotland

Rab have just launched a range of reasonably priced sleeping mats too. I bought one myself for £100. 5.5 r rating and packs down pretty small.

Good point - and on the other side of things, I’ve donated some decent, well cared for camping stuff to charity shops hoping someone will get themselves some nice little holidays out of the stuff.

I bought a red M and S lightweight insulated jacket from a charity shop for £5. I realised when I got home it was made of down. I wouldn't trust it for wearing outside with a rucksack on, but it is absolutely perfect as a camp /summit jacket.

Ex forces can use the defence discount service card to get anything from 10-15% off, even if some stores have stuff on sales. Saved a small fortune over the years. Not all stores have signed up to it, best to ask if they accept it first.

Buy a cheap tent, cheap stove, cheap pot, and cheap back pack. A good comfy pad with warm quilt/bag and pillow are worth every penny. I can sleep in any tent aslong as I've got my sleep system. I'd rather spend £900 on a sleep system and £100 on a tent than the other way around.
Most quilts are supplied by US companys and with the pound tanking asgainst the doller the costs have gone up. Take a look at MSR, and Jetboil prices. My micromo has nearly doubled in price in the last 12 months, I dont care how good a jetboil is, its not £170 good.
