  • It's June and myself and @AndrewBeavers are backpacking 80 miles along the Cumbria Way in the Lake District. Our plan is to complete the trip in 5 days, hiking and camping along the way, so all of our gear will have to fit in our backpacks. Part 2 of this series covers days 3 & 4 from Langdale to Caldbeck. The weather and scenery were beautiful, making for an amazing adventure.

I'm glad you talked about using campsites along the trail over wild camps. It's definitely the better choice and most sensible. It also helps others realise its not all about finding the best spot for the night as your experience is far better along the route taken then relaxing and refreshing 😊

Gret videos Paul! Really appreciate the effort of filming all along to show this beautiful views.
Just an advice from a professional point of view (I'm a nutritionist): Be careful with high fat and cholesterol foods especially when doing high intensity exercise like backpacking, it leads to inflammation and it's the last thing you want on a trip like this where the inflammation is already high from the exercise. I hope you don't take it bad, I just want to see your videos for very long time :) Cheers!

Black Moss Pot! Awesome memories of swimming there while Youth Hostelling with a Northumberland school in the late 70's, of course, we didn't have the luxury of wet suits! But what a welcome sight it was after a day on the hills!

What beautiful scenery, Over here in NZ, the general rule of thumb is that we rest 10 minuets in every hour, but this will depend on the weather, number in the party and of course the fitness level. Nothing like a good slog up hill on a hot day, clears the cobwebs. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

We were on our last legs that day, it was the only place we didn't have a plan for camping, we called in at the Keswick Camping and Caravan club site and must have looked desperate.... camp spot they gave us was amazing. They take day hikers, a spot next to the lake on crown green truf! wash/shower/ dry facilities were best I've seen at a site. Will definitely use again, especially as it was pretty much on route.

Thank you for doing this video Paul. You inspired me to do The Cumbria Way - the weather wasnt as nice unfortunately, but I absolutely loved every second of it either way. Straight after doing the Cumbria Way, I organised to do The Cotswolds Way, which is coming up in October, and then I've got time off work to do Lands End to John O'Groats next year. Its all spiraled from doing Cumbria Way, and if it wasnt for watching this video, I probably wouldn't have got the ideas to do the next things. Thank you so much again, and looking forward to your next trips

okay so firstly hats off to you and andy for getting the job done so far and im so glad you never gave up youtube and stuck with it your content is quality paul ❤ but please help me out here as someone who is from the scottish highlands i grew up going grouse beeting in the moors for extra money as a kid walking miles a day through knee deep heather very close to the cairngorms and know being ex army ive never understood (trekking poles) i get that maybe 25/30% of the time your glad you have them but the rest of the time they seem like there just getting dragged along for the journey 🤷🏻‍♂️ its it some sort of ultralight fashion where you need to have a trekking pole tent to save some weight ? personally i would rather carry the extra weight on my back and have my hands free but when you factor in the awkward poles you have to drag along all day are you actually saving more than 300/400g i just don't understand the whole trekking pole thing for 80% of the terrain most hikers endure we used to carry 15k packs and cover all kinds of terrain without them now it seems like if you dont have them your not a real pack packer 🤷🏻‍♂️ i guess its just personal preference at the end of the day would love to hear your opinion after doing the cumbria way would you do it differently next time ? anyway love your content and commitment to to doing what you love take care all the best 👍🏻

I can remember a few years ago doing an ultramarathon, I was running with a bloke who had run marathons all over the world and had never not finished one, I’d never ran a marathon. We were coming in through the valley you dropped down into and started to notice the zig zag path ahead and then down Stake pass, there was a main feed station in the pub, we both got withdrawn from the race, missing the cut off by 8 mins, I was pleased the other bloke wasn’t and didn’t speak all the way back to Ambleside in the transport. It’s a tough climb and descent either way.

Hi Paul. Loved this video. I’ve never seen such beautiful scenery before. It is stunning and I wish we lived nearer (Essex) and could enjoy it more. Take care and have fun regards Luke

Good video Paul. I like the style that you use, chatty with a bit of humour and a touch of reality biting thrown in. Quite jealous, wish i was there with you! ( If you fancy doing it again give me a shout!😅😅

This is bringing back so many fond memories. Great vid so far Paul. Thanks. I walked it years ago and watching this is making me happy! Beer is good for you! Pineapple with your gammon though? Surely it must be egg? 😀

Yes NT Langdale is an excellent campsite, yes I've also enjoyed their bacon sandwiches (and I saw you selected their beer fridge selection night before), the showers excellent and handy to have power in shower blocks. The amount of climb to get to Borrowdale isn't quite as bad as the Bowfell route.

Well done Paul! I've done it a couple of times, from North to South (I live near Ulverston). Stake Pass was awful (both times), although after being reminded of the scenery, part of me wants to try the S-N (the proper way). Looking forward to watching part 3.

Fair play for that distance. Even after the 1st part I’m thinking, my feet wouldn’t cope. Doesn’t take much to upset them.
I’m still trying to find the magic solution. Currently working on outer/inner heal blisters on longer walks. And balls of my feet hurt on anything 10-20miles. Maybe that’s normal.
Trying liner socks and rock tape with my Meindl Antelao comfort fit boots.
Comfiest boots I’ve ever worn, but still get issues!
I also have that Compede stick 👍🏼
    Brilliant journey so far 👏🏼
