- Click here to check out Kiwi Dude's channel. He has a multi-part review of another ORP as well as many other reviews of MREs and international rations:
/ kiwidudemre
This is a 24-hour military ration from New Zealand. It's called an Operational Ration Pack, or ORP. This one is Menu D. The main entree meals are Vegetable Tagine and Thai Chicken. This rare ration was sent to me to review by Kiwi Dude. This will be a multi-part review. Since I've never had one of these before (and will probably never see another one) I wanted to make as thorough a review as possible. This first part will just be a look at the ORP and its contents. There will be a total of four parts. Parts two, three and four will looks at three meals made from this ration: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Awesome! As soon as I saw the TH-cam notification come up, I couldn't wait to get home from work and watch. I haven't had the Thai Chicken or Vege Tagine either, so am on the edge of my seat. I never noticed the different matches in my pack, but I just had a look, and sure enough - there they were. Looking forward to Part 2 :-)
P.S Love the 'Men at Work' reference.
Your mre sure spunds yummy :)
***** Thank you.
Kiwi Dude
Hey man, how do you get those MREs?
Zorin Stahlheim They pop up in places from time-to-time over here. Either through acquaintances in the service, or occasionally through online auctions.
Kiwi Dude The man, the myth, the legend.
Why the hell do I find this so interesting? I found out about MRE like two hours ago and I've watch like 20 videos already. I was watching just for laughs videos, god damn youtube.
Yeah, some sort of sick addiction! LOL!
gundog4314 They make me really really hungry and sometimes I get food and eat it in front of the computer and it's like masturbating while watching porn
ik the second i found out bout these i stockpiled on em bout a year ago and eat them pretty frequently and still have a bunch
new zeland is my country
Lol. As soon as I saw New Zealand on the title I immediately knew it was from KiwiDude.
Just a couple of helpful hints from an Aussie :D
Use the yeast extract (vegemite/marmite) sparingly. Large globs of this stuff will kick like a mule. Also the sweetened condensed milk is used as a creamer/sweetener in this case but if you're a big kid like me it's awesome right out of the tube!
Some of us are a bit touched in the head and occasionally eat Marmite with a spoon! And sweetened condensed milk... I have been known to drink it from the tin. :D
Sounds like good advice! I actually already filmed the other three videos (so have already tried the vegemite) and now just need to find the time to edit them so they can be posted. Let's just say I wish I had seen this advice before trying the stuff...
gschultz9 Heh I can't wait to see that. Vegemite can be a bit... shocking to the uninitiated.
That's a pretty bad assed match case for it to just come in an MRE style meal.
I was quite impressed with it!
gschultz9 The matches are pretty safe from water inside the container. Unfortunately, they didn't give the same treatment to the striker paper. Which WILL get wet. Ever tried to strike a match on wet strikers? Yeah, not gonna happen. They should have put one of the strikers INSIDE the lid of the container. It would stay dry and usable there....
Benjamin Dover I agree it would be better if they had a striker inside the case. That said, those match cases look like they would be really useful for not just storing matches but other small items like pills, water purification tablets, etc. Wish they had something like that in the American MRE's.

Woops, duplicate post.
Curious to see how you break it up into individual meals. Looking forward to breakfast.
I think you'll find that the unlabeled can is plum jam (I think I saw it in the contents list). Also allow me to warn you about Marmite/Vegemite: I got a jar of Marmite the other day out of curiosity. The flavor is a bit hard to describe, but the salt level? Whoooo-EEE! A little dab would make a good hot drink, about like a bullion cube. On buttered bread (the usual way to eat it) it is quite intense. Looking forward to followup videos
the mre pouches always reminded e of that uncle bens ready rice that first big is a ready rice bag
"If they're extremely hungry, they could eat the whole thing at once."
Me - 0_o
+John Connor LMAO that made me laugh so hard.
Jennifer Strong It's like, nigga I know I can eat a lot but DAMN. Though I do know a guy who probably can.
I'd probably try and split it all up myself. I tend to stick to small meals so I'd have a little here, a little there, etc.
Jennifer Strong Yeah. I really want one of these lol
@gschultz9: I hope you have a treadmill in your home for each time you consume any form of a 24hr MRE. The sodium content for the majority of the meals are really high!
That unlabelled can @4:16 must be a can of whupass, just ask Gundog about it.
Where can I find MRE's for good price I've always wanted to try one
I came up with 5 good meals out of all that food. Wow!
So, when are you getting to the eating part?
From what I've learned about British and commonwealth countries after WWII. There was rationing after the war on up through the mid 50's in Britain (55 I think). Luxury items like tobacco, tea, milk and a number of other things were some of the last things to be rationed. As a result, condensed milk and coffee from the U.S. became an acceptable alternative. It is why I think Britain and other commonwealth nations consume both tea and coffee, also why condensed milk is still used instead of nondairy creamer. The trade networks of Britain and her empire were destroyed by Nazi U-boats destroying the vital shipping merchant fleet. So Britain had to rely on American imports as a result. Shifting trade networks that existed previously before the war.
Yeast extract was a byproduct of brewing beer. It was found to be high in B vitamins and so has been a good supplement for these vitamins. I've had it and its decent. I find more tolerable to have it on toast but with butter first then marmite. It isn't meant to be eaten by itself.
gschultz9 you know, after watching some of your videos, I've realized something. Either all these packages you're handling are really small or you have a pair of pretty big hands. No offense of course.
Cool vid dude youre funny! lol Im from nz and marmite is an nz spread that is way nicer than aussie vegemite which is Yucky!!. I have bad memories of vegemite from childhood. lol
finally :P but when do we eat it?
you put the condescend milk and water in the muesli and its that greatest breakfast ever. and if you have jam put that in to!
Im guessing the sweetened condensed milk is for the muesli...? Over all this set seems like it has a lot of sweet foods. At any rate Im excited for the tasting :)
Sounds better than most of the shit I eat all day. Now I'm hungry and you haven't even opened anything yet.
A pretty complete 24 hours ration. Some Zapplesauce would make a good addition.
The condensed milk is usually for condiment and creamer, but when I did cadets in school we just ate it out of the tube as a snack. The veg mite used to come in a tube and was unmarked so you had to make sure you found the right one...
That milk is great, needs to be put in US MRE's. Could use some hot sauce?
Vegemite! In a ration! That sounds great. I'm a big fan of Vegemite and Marmite, but it's not easy to find in Canada.
I've known about vegemite since Men at Work released "Down Under" in 1983 (I believe), but have NEVER had the chance to actually try the stuff until now!
gschultz9 It's definitely an acquired taste, but one piece of advice: spread it veeery thin, as thin as you can, and then try that. Don't even bother trying it directly, it's gotta be on something or you're gonna have a bad time.
Superstore always seems to have both, at least in Metro Vancouver. Look in the spices and such section. London Drugs has Vegemite for some reason.
bagelboi66 We don't have any of that here, unfortunately. I've found Marmite at Supermarché PA, and while I had an Australian friend bring me my first jar of Vegemite, I've since found it at a small shop in Pointe-Claire Village, although I can't remember which one at the moment (may have been Le Panier).
Adam Zey I forgot to mention that if there is a shop that caters to the vegan community there is a good chance that you will find Marmite or Vegemite there. Both are a good source of B vitamins, particularly B12, a lot of vegans use yeast extract for that reason.
Where do you find these they are cool
now kiwi's videos. i watch both yours.
Wonder how much all that packaging weighs?
Where can you get news in minnesota

Would love to see an Australia MRE/ORP. Me being in Australia i can't seem to find genuine aussie rations
larelles1 Stompdowner the Australian civilian mre/orp is almost the same as this.
I don't think you will. After trying to get one myself for awhile. A person died from consuming one so the govt snatched them all up and destroyed them. Figure the only way to get one now is to have a mate in the forces. Cheers

Ah well i wanted to order an American MRE from the states or a cold weather MRE but it was like $40 shipping.
gundog4314 I know two websites where you can order them i don't kow if they ship internationally and there was a third that that I can't remember.
