- First off, I have to give another huge Thank You to Kiwi Dude for sending this great ration to me. I can't imagine that I'd ever have the opportunity to review such a rare ration without his generosity. Make sure to check out his channel if you haven't done so yet:
/ kiwidudemre
So here's the final look at the New Zealand Operational Ration Pack, or ORP. After having breakfast and lunch we're finishing up with dinner. I know this is a rather long one, but it does include a look at the matches included with the ration at the end of the video.
this is a stoner's dream meal.
ramen, cookies, 2 whole chocolate bars, coffee.
they could make some serious money if they packed this kind of stuff as regular things you can buy in a store.
Bro i would like to eat these one mounth i don't know why some people are complaining these looks so cool i want these in the store we gotta make someothing to put these in stores.
Danciu Cata If they don't stop you up like MREs do I think this sort of thing would be a huge hit with backpackers. They should stock them at REI.
Luigirepublic actually yes/no
the MREs in surplus stores or on the internet/commercial MREs are expensive as hell!
they are practical for backpackers - I completely agree - but backpackers usually don't have the finance to spend ~5-7$ per meal.
how would they cook it though, its complicated for a stoner
That's a big question..
for you.
the MRE spoon isn't good for boiling water, and I will continue to use it in the boiling water
I like watching your videos because it's just so comfy and calming, good stuff
Great video G, I was really looking forward to this one :-) Lot of laughs too between the spoon and the matches too. I was cheering at the matches "Come on, light you bastards!". Good on you for sticking in there.
Did you notice any differences between the top and bottom striker pads?
Kiwi Dude Thanks Kiwi Dude. You know, I meant to try out both strikers. I found it interesting that they gave you two different types of strikers on one match case, but I forgot to specifically compare the two. Do you know why they are different (does one work better for one type of match and the other work better with the other ones or something)?
gschultz9 I was wondering the same thing, but I'm not sure if one end is supposed to work better with a certain type of match. I'll try to find out and let you know :-)
Love your videos! I don't know why I can't stop watching these.
These videos are great fun. I always enjoy them when they come out. If you run out of rations to test, you could start a side channel on simple cooking, and taste testing. Love the narrative style.
Shout out to the Kiwis!
Thanks for the video. One thing about the cheese spread. You can warm that can up before you open it, through many different means. Hand warmer for 30 minutes in a pocket or empty sock. Stick it somewhere in your engine compartment for about 30 minutes. Set it next to the coals of a fire or alcohol stove or butane stove. The last way, you could always set it in direct sunlight on top of a stone that has been in the sun for a few hours, let it set there for 45 minutes or so and in the sun light. All these ways will soften that cheese, no problemo.
The trick with vegemite mate is use it sparingly, the amount you spread could have covered 20 crackers.
also we generally use a 1 by 4 ratio of vegemite and butter or margarine
Great video, as usual! Very thorough and professional. Way to stick to it with those matches. I knew you weren't a quitter!
theres a flint at the bottom of the match stick container that you can use, its usually covered by a spare striking pad
If "Moroccan Ratatouille" was an off-the-cuff comment, I salute your agile mind, good sir. It's instantly evocative to both taste and smell memories. My one small criticism would be that you could've and should've read the instruction sheet first. If I caught it correctly in the brief glimpses, it suggests the noodles with breakfast; that would've evened out the portioning a lot better. But as this was a review and not actual field use, that's moot.
No utensils, no self-heater. Should be called an New Zealand Semi-Operational Pack.
+PointyTailofSatan Ha!
*Muffled in the distance* Messs kiiiiiiiiit........
No because in the New Zealand army you are issued a mess kit and a hexi cube heater in your main kit not in your operation pack to avoid contamination from the chemicals.
Gshultz9 , I like your and kiwi dude's MRE reviews better than anyones .. thank you both for entertaining me
I think you're supposed to put the broth with the instant noodles.
Great reveiw on this...i liked how the pouch was able. To stand up on its own...that would be very handy in the field...the combination of the main and the ramen was a nice touch to im sure it made the plain ramen great!!!....nice job.
I wonder what, if anything, has been done to the noodles to maintain their shelf shelf life (tilts head). Those things can become rancid, y'know?
the long red matches is probably storm matches. they often looks like that. small ones might be for better weather. correct me if im wrong
Outstanding! Outstanding review, gschultz! No doubt about it, the Kiwis make an excellent ration. By the way, I've never met a Kiwi I didn't like. Then again, I've never met KiwiDude... ~ Dan
...
a couple years too late but underneath the match container is a little flint you can use to light fires
Now that's a dinner, Great Video.
People are making ramen noodles sound complicated haha I've alway boiled the ramen added alittle bit of water to my bowl and the noodles and then put the seasoning in it..... is there a right way of doing it????????
It wasn't the boiling water, probably the bottom of the steel pot you were using that was in direct contact with an extremely hot stove coil, that was melting the spoon.
Great video. As always. And wow, your stove is so clean!! ;)
the can cheese actually looks good. what kind of cheese does it taste like?
Finally!! haha i can never wait for these videos. Love em'
For the noodles , ur supposed to have water in it for the seasoning to disolve in, its supposed to be like a soup, not just plain seasoned noodles, 😊
Or you can eat them non-cooked with just the seasoning... if you have no water.. pretty good that way!
+Umbreen Fatmah I eat them like he does. Boil the water, cooked them, add the seasoning, let it soak into the noodle, strain the water out. :D3
***** I actually tried them like that and they were really good, so I guess u can go either way 😊 thanks for the feedback😊😊
+Umbreen Fatmah I would have added some of the cheese spread to it. :P
+Umbreen Fatmah Some noodle 'soups' are dry and seasoned afterwards.
the big matches are just wind resistant normal matches, as long as you keep the matches in the box they came in they will not get wet.
I noticed the Vegemite didn't make a return visit from lunch. I guess you finished that all up at lunch?
Not feeling too crazy about the noodles. Has anyone tried that with a regular ESBIT stove, which usually one gets issued if you don't serve for a force that provides FRHs
did you try the chili stuff in another video?
You must've read this for the thousandth time, but you are cooking the instant noodles wrongly. A set amount of water must be included with the noodles, not too much, not too little. The sachet must be in the water as the noodles go in, and they must be cooked and boiled WITH the noodles, that way, the taste would permeate through the noodles. The water boiled during the process becomes the soup for the noodles.
Emergency Replacement Spoon for President!
I lived in Morocco for several years and wrote a Moroccan cookbook so I had to avert my eyes! Lmao :-)
I'm surprised you didn't pull a small gundog and combine the beef soup with the noodles!
The canned cheese looks like those mini babybel things
That's basically what it's like. It's not meant to be a 'spread' as such, but G's perseverance paid off and it actually looked great with a little heat applied :-)
Kiwi Dude Yeah, after making the videos I realized that, after eating so many MREs over the years, I kind of assume that every cheese in a ration is a "cheese spread". Obviously this one wasn't meant specifically for that (was only called "cheese canned" in the info sheet), I still went ahead and tried to eat it on a cracker as I'm so used to doing.
Holy cow.
Check out the power on those matches, like mini flares!
good shit if you smoke
Great video as always keep up the good work man
I watched all ur videos I can't stop idk y
Reminds me of the british ones and if you get a good few options.
How do you get a handle of some of these MRE boxes and how much do they go for? Cause they look perfect for Camping
Just eat ramen for camping.
+Smeet Jaokar how would I make ramen in the middle of the woods?
+Jason Realen oh I thought you meant cabin camping.
+Jason Realen make a fire, have some kind of pot, set it over the fire with some water from a lake or your own water and if it's lake water you wanna let it boil then take some ramen and boom.
I think I cringed at the sight of soupless ramen noodles
Be nice if someone had some Uglies to test. aka 1970's to late 1980's NZ ration pack. They were an eye opener. Personal experience.
Sounds interesting. Hadn't heard of those before. Maybe Steve1989 will get ahold of one in the future!
6:29 "She says to mix with 300ml or boiling water" She?
ahhh your videos make me soo hungry !! >_____
No one really ever ate the tinned cheese too waxy. You'd be luck to get any cabin bread that wasnt pulverized. The larger matches were only really windproof. They didnt use to come in those containers - small plastic zip lock micro-bag that always allowed water in. Some of us had a few film containers - I think thats where that innovation came from. Those hexi tablets were a bitch get lit especially when everything was wet.
when you poured in the onion flakes it looks like you put in nail clippings
Wish I could get all those extra coffees :P
If yeast is not to your taste I suppose you could mix it with jam or maple syrup might make it more palatable, if you had had more room you put the noodles in you could have had the tagine as the sauce for the noodles.
awww no, you do not want to mix vegemite with maple syrup or jam, it'd be like mixing soy sauce with maple syrup or jam. I mean...maybe that'd be Ok if you wanted to marinate some meat, but hardly good to eat as is.
RNZAF doesnt like Hexi tablets on their aircraft. (in peacetime) They are bulk boxed an get issued separately. It looks like they have updated the packs since I was in. Rarotongan Beef.. Not many cows on cook islands...Woof woof..
In the 80's in the territorials we used expired brown tin ration packs made by "pools" ex Vietnam era smelt like dogfood and looked like dogfood.. but when you are hungry enough it tastes ok. Had a few P51 can openers a real collection. Usually we stretched the 24hr Rat pack to last more than 24hrs. But I have seen a new guy consume it all for one meal!
Please let me know where you get these! Anxious to try one myself! Please reply asap thanks! Enjoy your vids :) I am going on a hunting expedition with my father soon and if you can get back to me please let me know your favorite MRE menu or "flavor" thank you! :-)
You can make cheese ramen noodles too! With onion flakes.
Where could we buy these?
Ebay
i love really good food, but at the same time i grew up on super cheap food, i feel like i could heat up these mre's and be so freakin happy, i absolutely need to get me some of these
I think that cheese wasn't meant to be spreadable, even on that paper it said canned cheese. nice ideea on heating it up though
Moroccan food is not generally spicy. They do not have the love affair with a hot pepper as Algeria and Tunisia do. Harisa was an import and I was hard pressed to find some anywhere. I found one jar with a extremely dusty lid and it was no longer red.
good review,thanks.
were could I get one of these if I want to ?
The New Zealand rations are really hard to get a hold of. My suggestion would be ebay, but they are quite rare to find.
yeah I would think they are like the german EPAs
They pop up from time-to-time on a New Zealand auction site called TradeMe, but nobody ships further than Australia (the site doesn't let you list or purchase from outside of NZ or Aussie). I've never seen them advertised on eBay, but it's worth checking in regularly. New Zealand's military across Army, Navy & Air Force consists of about 14,000 personnel, so these aren't issued in huge numbers.
Why do you put so little water in the soup?
Some people just prefer less broth. Same as me in most cases.
I usually use more water but was trying to get it close to what I thought a half canteen cup would be because that is what the directions called for. Would have been easier with more water, but figured I'd give it a shot.
Try pushing the match thru the striker.
Beef broth, onions...Add a touch of your canned cheese and you'd have a french onion soup going. ;)
For the yeast extract i would have just added hot water to the pack and had it as a hot drink! As for the condensed milk, well TBH everybody knows that should just be opened and squeezed straight into your mouth and used as dessert! Mmmm!!!!!
That ramen noodle definitely needs more water that's the whole point of the seasoning pack
I find your channel really really interesting I started watching 2 days ago and now I'm gonna subscribe
Could you possibly do a review of a british army ration pack😍🙌🏻
+Charlie Cross Glad you're liking it, and thank you for subscribing! I would LOVE to review a British ration pack, but haven't managed to get my hands on one yet. If I do one of these days, it'll definitely get reviewed!
+gschultz9 you're honestly welcome👌I'll definitely keep watching ones I haven't already watched also I'll have a ask about as I have family members in or was in the services here also in Ireland I'll let you know👊🏻thanks for your uploads and please keep doing them or other little things to do with army it is very educational for recruits joining I was gonna join but can't because of my fits but I watched these videos to like see what I was gonna face ah😊I'll definitely try to volunteer tho so thanks for a little hope of like finally eating something like what you review one day🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
+Charlie Cross No potatoes in Irish ration packs.
You should have mixed the noodles, the onions, and both flavorings all in one soup.
Um I think the special something in the cookies is the beef fat in the ingredients list.........................o.o
Kinda clicked when you put the onions in the instant beef soup... French onion soup.
Do u always finish them after?
I used to (and this video was back in those days). Now I usually only finish all of the international ones or the rare and/or interesting ones. For health considerations I'm trying not to finish everything in the MREs--unless they're REALLY good of course!
Yeah did you serve in the milatry
+gschultz9 Which one was your favorite. I think the one from Canada looked the best.
+King Kunta here in Canada we know our shit eh?
Yes.
The long match heads are storm matches for high winds. Great review otherwise.
18:38 Is it just me or does the ball of cheese on the right look like an angry face?
Ramen noodles can be made any way you want to make them FlyingPenguinBanana , there is not such thing as a right way or a wrong way...just your way. #pickyeater
college kid ORP
joshua revell Ha!
Good job!
Wonder if that cheese would be better warmed up?
Watch till the end ;)
+Theortheo nice!
R.I.P chocolate chip biscuits 🙁
Does New Zealand have a army? :-D
And why?
Yes we do. As well as air force and navy.
I guess its to do with protection since I believe were independent now.
and somtimes those kiwis can get quite nasty, huh? ;-)
Smells about right...
This one actually made my mouth water where can I get stuff like this ???
stop making these vids. IT MAKES ME SO HUNGRY!! LOOKS SO TASTY
nuuuu! your not suppose to break the noodles :(
Most people don't understand the subtle joy of loudly slurping long noodles.
I make my ramen noodles a bit crunchy (please don't judge)
No judging here!
who else was getting stressed out when the matches weren't lighting? lol
not much of a noodle soup if you remove the water, becomes flavoured noodles then.
Peorhum
guess everyone is mentioning the noodles...hahaha...sorry for echoing them
U should put beef soup in ramen
i would never boil instant ramen noodles.. they will turn to mush
jeez who would have thought new zealand even had an army !
nz military so scrub, even fiji could conquer it with their coconuts
+MonkeyAndGiraffe I don't know which military you have seen but nz vs Fiji y'all would lose hands down
lol yes we have an army our army base is actually in waiuku (our dessert)
To keep all those dolphins and seagulls at bay.
+Quintana Haze We have 4 military bases and the base you are talking about is the Waioru Military Base. The SAS is actually very highly trained and highly equipped and are rated at a higher skill level than the US Navy Seals but what the SAS lack is the man force as New Zealand have about 10,000 regular soldiers and around 20,000 part time soldiers and of the some what 30,000 soldiers NZ has only about 200-250 are actually in the SAS
Cool
im eating some deliciously seasoned steak while i watch this, but i enjoy it non the less
It's actually really sad to me that they eat this :(
Why? Like why is that sad they can't bring whole kitchen out to the battle field its better than nothing
Why? Like why is that sad they can't bring whole kitchen out to the battle field its better than nothing
Why DO I WATCH these MRE vids i hate the dam things. I say to my wife she looks at me and says right thats why when you buy a case to save for an emergency the box is empty two months later.
OK, I have to "well actually" you here - you thought there might be potatoes in the tagine to which I have to wonder "why?" See, there are no potatoes in the part of the world the tagine originates from. That's why there's aubergine (eggplant) and chickpeas. To drive the point home, notice there is no eggplant nor chickpeas in Irish stews - 'cos those ingredients aren't indigenous to that area of the world, but potatoes are.
All apologies for me being a pedantic ass-hat.
It ALSO said after a FEW months the condensed milk would STILL be good. MMMMMMMMMM
hi
FURST LAWLZ
It's such a shame you just had to ruin the moment for yourself.
U r teasing me lol im hungry now i can eat my sister
WTF
Lol at the end u broke the match
Don't light matches over the food. Chemicals can fall out.
What a goof.
Lucky bastards I wanna eat like the kiwis... Lucky bastards
5th
That could about......... 5 african families...
He eats the entire meals and I doubt he did the whole ORP in one sitting. So there's really no difference between this and the meals you feed yourself every day.
-_- you guys misunderstood what i was trying to say i know he ate the meals in different setting i'm just saying that much food in portion size could feed 5 african familes
PaulysAdvancedGaming
Either way, your point is irrelevant and pedantic. Also why are you singling out Africans, there are plenty of other areas that struggle with hunger that would not be classified as African.
PaulysAdvancedGaming these have fairly large serving sizes because they feed soldiers who burn much more calories than you or I. For him it may be much, but are you suggesting that we feed our combat troops who risk their lives for their country too much? Not that feeding starving people is a bad cause.
