I've never been a fan of Domingo, but this is amazing. Yes, a true artist without the fake emotions. And playing the piano and singing, triple time vs. duple is almost impossible. I can only fake the piano part while singing it, but he played it impeccable. Bravo Placido.
This is just wonderful: the very talented cellist(cellos are always welcome) and Placido singing and accompanying himself on the piano, with his thrilling voice. It does not get any better. Bravissimi.
This walking miracle has embodied music and Music has loved him so well and for so long, they have made each other both more immortal and more poignant on planes and in dimensions not yet revealed to the rest of us, the merely flabby humanoids. We are only just beginning to truly grasp the immense greatness of Placido Domingo, lagging well behind Music, who long ago made him her Beloved and Cherished Son and Champion.
Amazing he could play and sing it at the same time, and do both so beautifully. Those triplets fuck me up even if I just try to play it lol - Although I guess the left hand melody was taken over by the cello so maybe that helps.
I propose that the United Nations declare F.P.Tosti’s IDEALE as The Anthem of the World, or, The World’s Anthem! Oh that men might seek after The Ideal: Justice, freedom, mercy and peace!
@phantomegmail That's very true, preference is, for the most part, purely subjective. Technical differences can be fairly small in terms of the physical nature of the technique, yet the difference it makes in the sound can be phenomenal. Opera singing may be the highest and purest art form, though it is also an exact science.
Can anyone not call him the best of the best? Pav couldn't even read music. What a voice Domingo had and still has -- not really a baritone now, and not a traditional tenor, but what intelligence and feeling and ability. Still the best. What a musician!
@theonlygriffo But you don't have to put him on Pavarotti's level. There's no shame in being "bested" by one of the greatest tenors of all time. He's still a great singer.
Domingo sang this song very well indeed. And having the cello obbligato adds something to the tenor's excellent self-accompaniment at the piano. But it's a shame that, in the present video of this superb performance, the visual image and the soundtrack are seriously out of sync.
@David, it is an enduring heartache to know that so many of his performances have been memorialized on VHS home video in such condition. It's all we had at the time, and now, thanks to the entertainment overlords, it's worse: digital tv signal cannot be recorded on videotape. Now, one must get really creative. Fortunately, humans are very clever. One would hope that a professionally made master is in the Met's archives. I haven't tried their play on demand feature at their website so I don't know if this would be available to call up. At least, this clip exists and the sound is good, and the decay has been arrested by uploading a digitized copy. Maybe one day the YT overlords and their minion will do the right thing and apply their technology to such clips here, free of charge, and just sync the signals as a gesture of humanity. Not holding my breath, no. Paz y salud.
I guess I didn't like Pav's (to me) tinny sounding voice compared to the sexy richness of Domingo at his peak -- and it's still rich and sexy !!! It still bothers me that Pav couldn't read music. It's not that hard, it just takes a little work and concentration. I taught myself, for one example. My other favorite was Franco Corelli, another voice beloved by some and criticized by others. I only heard him sing live two times, however.
@orobyn Music is not about theory, it's about performance. Pavarotti is technically and artistically miles above Domingo. I like Domingo, a lot, he's a great guy and an amazing all-rounder, but I struggle greatly to put him anywhere near the same level as Pavarotti.
Very full and powerful voice. Beautiful singing. I still prefer Pavarotti's voice for this kind of song though . Wish Placido would do the pianissimi a little better. I have seen him sing the pianissimi with more elegance and softer in other songs.
A real musician in every sense of the word. Singer, Pianist, Conductor and wonderful artist. Thanks for posting this.
What an incredible talent is Placido Domingo! What a beautiful song is Ideale!

A wonderful, heartfelt version of this wonderful song. Bravo!
Bravo placido......belle interprétation comme toujours.

Absolutely magnificent!

Yes, It's a unique style by his owned, and no one can be instead of him; a really great artist! Bravo!!
Another song that rips my heartstrings to pieces.
Wonderful presentation of a most remarkable talent. Thank you.
Why do people always have to compare who's better?? Everyone is unique in their own style and whole.
BRAVISSIMO ! ! ! ! !
He is a great artist, really!
Bravo placido continue 💐💐🌹🌹🌹
A true artist. Relaxed. Always the expressive singing. No gasping. No sobbing. No handkerchief.
I love Placido!!!
Πάντα υπέροχος!
Tiek emocijų,per kraštus liejasi!
Bravo !!!!!!!!
Boia belloooo! ♥️😍😍😍
Thank you 😊
Love him!!!!!!
So hard, to play and sing at the same time.
Most excellent...to put it mildly.
No doubt, is one of a kind!!!!
Can any other opera singer top that?
Amazing he could play and sing it at the same time, and do both so beautifully. Those triplets fuck me up even if I just try to play it lol - Although I guess the left hand melody was taken over by the cello so maybe that helps.
belissimo
I couldn't agree more!
Bravo Mucho
Juk groti ir dainuoti ir dar ansambliuoti labai sunku!

I don't think that's what the song is about lol, like at all

Truly great as is the Pavarotti version...If only Mario had recorded this beautiful piece
👏👏👏👏
Bravo
Great tenor forever!
Look for Felipe Peletta also singing this song and many others.
ke grande

MissLil Nova s
he just wiped his arse with my singing attempts: singing this beautifully and playing the piano... well.
@Rigelcentauri58 He he - plenty?

Reinhold Kräußel 🙏bin absolut Ihrer Meinung! Domingo ist einfach grandios u einmalig "Jahrhundertstimme"👏❤️

Viskas labai gerai, bet norėčiau daugiau ansambliškumo, violančelės beveik negirdėti!

Franco/Dario un titano tellurico travolgente ❤

Horrible version!
The song needs more rubato than he provides. Unidiomatic.
